warning! unresolved angst, implied insomnia, self projecting
chan is sad. he doesn't let himself admit it often, but the exhaustion in his bones is persistent. he feels like crying, but the tears won't come, and it's frustrating. his heart aches and his mind is an overwhelming tangle of thoughts he wishes he could stop thinking of.
he just wants to sleep, goddamnit! he's tried everything he could think of, from counting sheep to listening to white noiseโ€” nothing works.
he sighs for the umpteenth time, running a tired hand over his face, and goes back to staring at the ceiling like he has been for the past hour. what crimes had he committed in his past life for him to not even get a good night's sleep in this one?
sometimes he wonders if his job is worth it, because at least he didn't practically have to beg to the gods he doesn't believe in to let him sleep before. after another half an hour or so of tossing and turning and sighing bitterly, tears finally spring to his eyes.
they're not enough for them to run down his cheeks. instead, they irritably stay in his eyes and make his vision blurry. they're not there because he's sad and needs a good cry, no, they're there because he's frustrated he can't sleep.
he hates nights like these, nights when he doesn't feel like himself, when he'd rather he didn't exist at all, when something as simple as dreamless sleep feels as unattainable as water in a desert.
chan is sad. and he wishes he wasn't.

Every year Ammaโ€™s Birthday becomes a venue for the Ashram to launch the new humanitarian projects and expand some of the existing ones.
Among the humanitarian endeavours were:
Rs. One lakh financial aid to families who lost a member during the torrential rains and landslides of the 2019 Kerala monsoon,
free surgeries for 400 poor at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi,
10 free homes for the poor in Kannur, and
the provision of 10 OceanNet systems to fishermen, allowing them to maintain Internet connections when past the normal range of connectivity,
4,00,000 free saris to women enrolled in its upliftment programmes such as the Amrita SREE SHGs, and
free weddings complete with customary gold ornaments for couples in need.

On the cultural front, the annual Amritakeerti award for 2018 & 2019 was given to K.B. Sreedevi & Vattaparambil Gopinathan Pillai
On the educational front, a new Technology Enabling Centre and a School for Sustainable Development were inaugurated for Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Amrita University also announced that it had created an Rs. 25-crores PhD fellowship programme called โ€œAmrita E4LIFEโ€ that would sponsor PhDs in the field of Sustainable Development for 100 students from India and around the world.
Speaking about the fellowships, Amrita Universityโ€™s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. P. Venkat Rangan, said, โ€œTo date, the Mata Amritanandamayi Math has adopted more than 100 villages all over India. Under Chancellor Ammaโ€™s direction, faculty and students at Amrita have been striving to help these villages by creating tailor-made solutions that foster sustainable development and social-economic progress. It is Ammaโ€™s belief that such programmes help not only the villagers, but also the students โ€” awakening compassion in their hearts. It is to facilitate this vision of Ammaโ€™s and to support youth interested in pursuing higher education to uplift the poor and needy that we have created this new PhD fellowship programme.โ€
On the evening of the 26th, new ashram publications were released, an environmental protection program called Amritavanam was started, and Amrita Australia inaugurated a new programme to uplift Australian Indigenous women.

EU Funds Research on Ocean-Based Technologies for Absorbing Carbon
[Byย Maren Agdestein]
This month, scientists from 14 institutions in six countries will beginย examining the opportunities and risks of ocean-based technologies for negative emissions.ย The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) ย is one of 14 institutions involved in the OceanNETs project, newly funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 programme. The EU grant totaled $8.2 million.
Humanity can still limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celcius, as shown in the 2018 special report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). However, the scenarios published in the report also demonstrate that humanity must actively remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, in addition to reducing emissions to nearly zero, in order to achieve the goal.
โ€œIn addition to the urgently needed emission reductions, technologies including nature-based solutions that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere are also necessary,โ€ says Helene Muri, senior researcher at NTNUโ€™s Industrial Ecology Programme (IndEcol) at NTNU. โ€œAnd the oceans could play a key role in this.โ€
She willย lead NTNUโ€™s participation in the research project.
Ocean-based negative emissions technologies (NETs)
Negative emissions technologies (NETs) have already been investigated for several years with regard to potential, risks and side effects.
โ€œUp to now the focus has mostly been on land-based methods, says Anders Hammer Strรธmman, an IndEcol professor who is also participating in the project. โ€œWe need more knowledge about ocean-based NETs. The ocean has a much higher capacity for carbon absorption and storage, with its enormous surface area and volume.โ€
โ€œNTNU will lead the work package on model simulations, which will develop state-of-the-art representations of NETs using Earth system models, and assess impacts on not only the oceans, but also land,โ€ Muri said. She said that NTNU will do these ย simulations using the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM).
โ€œThe potential of ocean-based NETs to contribute towards the Paris Agreement in a sustainable way is the key research objective for NTNUโ€™s work,โ€ she said.
In Paris in 2015, the international community agreed to limit global warming to two degrees C or less by 2100. In 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a special report which shows clear advantages in limiting global warming to only 1.5 degrees C: less loss of biodiversity, fewer extreme weather events, less sea level rise, to name just a few examples. Model calculations used by the IPCC also show that this 1.5 degree goal is still achievable. To reach this target, however, all scenarios require negative emissions.
Project details
The research project is titled Ocean-based Negative Emission Technologies โ€“ analyzing the feasibility, risks, and co-benefits of ocean-based negative emission technologies for stabilizing the climate. The project period spans four years. OceanNETs has received funding from the European Unionโ€™s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 869357. The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is the overall coordinator for the project.
