I think it's interesting that despite what we perceive of the Victorian period - women must marry, can only ever marry, and must be the Angel for the house and husband. That now it is more crazy to suggest to women to forgo marriage for the benefits (career advancement, healthcare, child care, mental health (see my post from Backlash about divorce improving mental health and therapy and marriage counseling enabling bad relationships). Talk about choosing even sexless relationships with women instead of het relationships and you're accused of misogyny. What's the chance it's because now such relationships would be assumed to always be sexual, and therefore "too close" to lesbianism? Has lesbian visibility triggered homophobia that prevents conceptualizing of these types of relationships as a viable option for straight women? And since the US is rolling back contraceptive access and abortion, would a feeling of increased reproductive risk bring these back? Would more discussion about how millenial and gen z men are actually more misogynistic as a group than gen y also bring this about? Or is it that women have lost separate spaces (women's colleges, secondary schools, community groups, consciousness raising spaces/groups?) and therefore have lost the physical and emotional infrastructure that could re-foster this? And finally, since post-modernism is basically a class-busting psy-op at this point for women, what would it require to undo the damage of queer theory/post-modernism so that these relationships could re-emerge for women?

Literally insane to me how small the general webtoon fandom is outside of the webtoon app itself (and maybe reddit??)

I've talked to multiple people irl who LOVE reading webtoon, but the online community is borderline threadbare ! Most people on Tumblr have no IDEA who our blorbos are! I've checked tags for some fairly popular webtoon and it was like visiting that Tatooine town in the Mandalorian where there are 5 citizens total, but only if you also count the Mayor, the sheriff, and the deputy.

Lore Olympus is the most popular webtoon and has under 2,000 fics on AO3. Lookism has roughly 1,000. Unordinary, THEE legacy webtoon, only has 600, and it's been running for almost 7 years now. It has nearly 6M subscribers and still gets 50K+ likes each week. It's not dead by any means.

I guess it doesn't help that each webtoon is its own micro ecosystem and once a webtoon ends, that ecosystem typically fades with it. But webtoons can go on runs longer than most shows on streaming services, and those fandoms burn hot and bright even if only for the first month of a new season drop.

By comparison, webtoon fans are largely casual about their enthusiasm, even if they're highly invested in the story or characters. From my experience, only the most passionate try to connect with other fans online. But when you're passionate about one webtoon, I suppose it's hard to show constant excitement about the 20+ other stories one might keep up with. Still, between the 85 million monthly readers, you'd think each major webtoon would at least have a dedicated fan base (meaning people who regularly post theories, thoughts, fics, and fanart) of mere thousands outside of the app.

One exception for this is that Batman webtoon? It actually trends on Tumblr every now and again. But it doesn't count, because Batman has a built in fandom who'll eat up and yell in the streets about any content where he's a decent dad.

People who read romance webtoon all tend to read the same comics, and actively understand the references to other popular romance comics (Trashta, Team Seojun, SLS), so you'd think there'd be a greater sense of unity. More people actively searching out others to discuss with and posting their thoughts online and not just in that webtoon's comment section.

I mean, C'MON girls!!! Millions of people log into that app like everyday!!! WHERE is the community?? WHERE is the fanart?? WHERE is the fanfic?? WHY does Odd Girl Out only have 7 fanfics?? WHY are there like 2 people on Twitter posting about Weak Hero?? Head in hands fr

Odd Girls part 4 - World War II for American women/lesbians

This was something I hadn't ever thought about before about WWII and the freedom women gained with all the young men abroad:

During WWII "there is probably some element of truth ... [that] the relative paucity of men encouraged same-sex intimacy not only among middle-class college and professional women, who had had the freedom to enjoy each other's company for some time now, but also among a broader spectrum of females who might have married... had it not been for the war."

We've talked before about how WWII sent enough men away that women were more comfortable walking at night in the street. But now I'm thinking about how WWII may have helped women literally meet more women. Not only were more women working, but even women who had always worked had often been working in the domestic or domestic-ish sphere (nanny, housekeeper, laundress, running boardinghouses/bed and breakfasts, teaching). These jobs are fairly isolating from other women. You are often the only adult or the only adult employee in the position, or married or both. So you do not have work friends who are other women. But if you take work in a factory or large office or nurse corps during WWII, suddenly you have a building full of shift mates who are mostly women! At work you meet women from outside your neighborhood/church, no man at home means you don't have a man breathing down your neck to come immediately home and prepare his dinner. Suddenly you have not only more access to more women (and therefore more time to compare experiences and learn about new things, like kissing other women) but now you also have less men around. I feel like there was a big coverup after WWII. In school we learned women were fired and coerced back out of the higher paying workforce. Where are the books about how WWII was for women on the home front? I feel like there's a lot of interesting stories there that were lost and social history that's in danger of being forgotten.

Hello! In all honesty, I'm not doing too great right now, I should really be resting up, but I can't because of work! Oh well, it happens!

Valeria and Laswell’s S/O Bringing Home a Kitten

Valeria: She would not care for the little thing in the slightest, in all honesty. Valeria knows that she’s absent very often, so she can’t exactly blame you for wanting a small animal companion to keep you company. Besides, she’d rather have it be a small animal than some other person. Still, she’s not the biggest fan of animals. While she may not hate them, she simply doesn’t care about them, regardless of what they are or how cute they may be to anyone else. You can keep your little kitten, she doesn’t care too much about it as long as she gets you to herself when she is at home. However, if the cat gets more of your attention than she does, that’s when she’s starting to get a little bit jealous. If you’re not looking, she’ll shoo the little critter away, hoping it’ll get the message and leave you and her alone. That’s when she’ll come to dislike your kitten a little bit. However, if you bug her enough about it, she might begrudgingly apologize to it, but only when you’re around. She won’t be outright mean to it, but she will put it away from your lap and place it somewhere else if she thinks you’re paying too much attention to it. The little critter can meow all it wants, it’s not getting any extra treats from her. Valeria will only feed it when you don’t have the time to do so, and even then it’s on thin ice. Although she usually prides herself on being a competent and confident woman, it’s so evident that Valeria’s as jealous as it gets, and of a cat as well. You can tease her about it too, she won’t really do anything about it because she can’t. She loves you and doesn’t wanna hurt you, which includes not hurting your stinky furball. It’s obvious it makes you happy, and that’s what she wants to see in this otherwise rotten world.

Laswell: Although she isn’t the biggest animal lover, she can appreciate a cute animal when she sees one, but wasn’t sure she heard you correctly when you claimed to have rescued that kitten from an alley. Laswell knows that cats are independent enough when they’re older, at the very least, but you can’t really leave a kitten all alone for now. Besides, what if it’s got some sort of disease? As long as you take good care of it, Laswell won’t mind having a kitten be brought home, but she won’t have too much time to take care of it either, so you’re gonna have to be committed to taking care of it. She may not be a fan of having a cat around at home at first, but she grows fond of it anyway. Think of all the “My dad and the cat he didn’t want at first” memes, that’s literally her. Either way, she does think you have a heart of gold for wanting to rescue a small and defenseless animal that had nowhere to go. However, don’t make it a habit to continuously rescue animals, she doesn’t have the time or space for all of them, so please just keep it to one, maybe two, at most. Laswell, when she can, will feed the kitten and play with it. Sometimes you might even catch her sleeping with it. Especially when the kitten is more mature and has calmed down from all the playing frenzy, that’s when Laswell might hug it more often and sometimes even take naps with it. Will help you out whenever you need anything from her. Your cat needs to go to the vet? It needs some more food? The last few toys you got for it are broken and or torn? Don’t worry, Laswell’s got you covered. She’s got enough money to make your cat’s life very luxurious, as luxurious as it gets, even. The food will be of the highest quality, it will get all the meds it could possibly need, if it needs them, and the toys will always be provided for. The little kitten probably couldn’t have asked for better owners, in all honesty.
