Trade Off

Prompt 12, “Don’t you trust me?” (part of my 100 prompt challenge)

Marvin still didn’t like this plan to get Henrik back. Him cloaking himself as Jackie, and Jackie as him. Trading Jackie, as Marvin, to Anti to get the doctor back. Acting like each other and hoping Anti didn’t figure out the switch. Everything had to go smoothly.

“Where’s my brother?” Marvin barked at the glitch.

“Patience hero. All in good time. And, is my magician ready to be handed over?”

Jackie stepped out from behind Marvin, head hung low so that Anti couldn’t see his face. Marvin grabbed a hold of Jackie’s arm so that he couldn’t be pulled away by surprise. “He’s ready. Now where’s Henrik.”

“I’m surprised at you hero, trading one brother for another. Playing favorites with who you’re saving and condemning. Not very heroic if you ask me.”

“I wanted to do it,” Jackie piped up, lifting his head to face Anti. “I want to save my brother.”

Anti tilted his head up in acknowledgement, keeping his eyes trained on fake Marvin. Maybe studying him. Maybe figuring out that it wasn’t really Marvin he was looking at.

“Stop playing these games and get Henrik out here!” Marvin was losing his cool.

“What’s the matter, Jackie boy man. Don’t you trust me?” Anti taunted, his tongue dancing on the name.

“Not for a second,” Marvin spat back. “So unless you want this to end in bloodshed-”

“Oh, I would so enjoy that, but now is not the time for that.” Anti waved his hand to his right and a figure started glitching into view. A few seconds later and it was a full black silhouette. Another couple seconds and there were features, colors, a full human. Henrik. Beaten and tattered. Eyes covered with a cloth and hands zip-tied together.

Marvin felt Jackie spring forward, but tried to hold him back. He may have looked like Jackie, but he didn’t have his powers, his strength. Hopefully Jackie would still stick to the plan and not lunge forward, out of his hands and into Anti’s. “Send Henrik over.”

“And let you betray me once you have both of them? I don’t think so. Same time.”

“And let you steal Henrik back at the last second? I don’t think so. I’m the hero, remember? As much as I hate this, you know I’m good for my word. Henrik first.”

“Suit yourself.” Anti tossed Henrik forward so that he fell to his hands and knees in front of the two brothers. Marvin let go of Jackie as they both helped their brother stand up. Marvin tore the sheet off so he could look into Henrik’s eyes. They were searching, jittery, trying to take everything in. Something looked different about them though. He couldn’t make out what had changed in him.

“Are you hurt Henrik?” Jackie asked. The doctor didn’t answer back, but he started fidgeting his hands. Jackie made a move to take them off, but Marvin beat him to it. Jackie couldn’t reveal that he wasn’t Marvin. So, Marvin used some magic in his fingertips to saw off the ties. Henrik started signing wildly. Why was he signing and not talking? Did Anti take his voice?

“What did you do to him Anti?!”

“Nothing.” Anti grinned, locking eyes with Marvin and not letting him go. “Now, my magician.”

Marvin turned to Jackie. Jackie’s focus was locked on Henrik. They hadn’t thought about how they would both feel when they got their brother back. “Marvin.” Nothing. “Marv!” Jackie finally turned towards Marvin. “Make sure you give him hell.” Jackie nodded, then slowly started moving towards the glitch. Henrik reached out for him, but it was too late.

Instead, Henrik grabbed Marvin’s shoulders and started shaking him. “Henrik, what’s wrong?” His hands were moving wildly, too fast to read, but Marvin could make out the word Jamie. “Jamie, what’s wrong with Jamie?” More fast hands. “You’re going too fast Henrik. Just talk; tell me what’s going on.”

So, he slowed down. “I’m not Henrik. I’m Jamie.” Marvin started blinking wildly, seeing if his eyes were actually working. Then into the doctor’s eyes. They had seen trauma alright, but they weren’t fully burdened by it. They still had some naivety in them. They were Jamie’s.

Looking back at Jackie, Anti already had Jackie’s head encompassed with static and his hands trapped in glitches. “Anti you son of a bitch! What did you do to Jamie!? Where is Henrik?!”

“Like you said earlier, hero. You shouldn’t trust me. And now you’ve given me a superhero, Marvin. Good luck protecting your shambles of a family without him.” The laugh echoed through the room as they disappeared. And Marvin was left with Jamie, who now looked like Jamie, wondering what to do next and what else Anti had done while Marvin wasn’t paying attention.

So a little note, this is actually a shortened version of what I wanted to do with it. So, I may end up making this a longer scene, or a whole story. Who knows? Hope you enjoyed it! (Also, I was gonna do zalgo text, but it gets so hard to read with it)
