Everyone gets an arc, even side characters and antagonists have their moments. There's even an antagonist that's like my favorite character, despite being a jerk. The story is amazing generally, but I think watching the shows improves it, since a some characters are added from other iterations. But even then, it doesn't feel forced, and there are original characters to look forward too as well. There is more angst than the shows, but I also don't really like angsty stuff and it never got so heavy I felt taken out of it.
