What's Happening?
Oikawa x m!reader (he/him/his)
A blind date? Why the hell not. Y/n is a wing spiker that plays city volleyball, not for the school, and Iwaizumi decides to play matchmaker.
The ~~ means a change in view or time.
Word Count: 4465
~
Why the hell is Iwaizumi so insistent on this? Y/n thought, as the volleyball player had begun berating him about going out with one of his friends. Iwa had been doing his damn best to get y/n to agree to a blind date with someone on the volleyball team, but he'd seen the guys on that team and nobody had really piqued his interest. Yet, here he was, again, for what felt like the thirtieth time.
"Just say you will, just go out to dinner or a movie or something simple. I've just got a feeling you'll like him, plus you've got nothing to lose. Nobody approaches you anyway." Y/n scoffed, giving Iwa a good shove in the process. He only laughed, "Oh what, you're mad I won't lie to you?"
"I'm mad you said that so loudly, we're in the middle of the hallway." Y/n complained, Iwa only rolling his eyes.
"Well if you'd just accept my invitation I wouldn't have to gloat about your terminal loneliness." Y/n couldn't even think of a witty response to match the absolute destruction Iwa brought with every word he spoke. "So, you're in?" He asked, y/n finally giving up and accepting his proposition.
Iwa grinned triumphantly, and nearly turned to leave, but y/n grabbed his arm, and stuck a finger in his face, "But I swear to god, if this goes south I will break every single one of your fingers so you'll never get to play volleyball ever again." Iwa let out a long whistle at y/n's threat, obviously not very feeling very threatened by it.
"I wouldn't be trying so hard if I didn't think it'd be successful. Just give him a chance, his first impressions aren't the best." Fantastic. "I'll send you details when I confirm with him, ok? Does after practice tonight work for you?" Reluctantly, y/n nodded and let Iwa go. They parted ways and headed towards their classrooms then, y/n's anxiety skyrocketing at the thought of going on a date with someone he didn't even remotely know.
He tried to relax during classes, telling himself over and over that it would be ok because Iwa must be close friends with whoever it was, but the pit in his stomach just kept growing. What if he actually liked whoever it was, but it wasn't mutual? What if he couldn't make conversation and it was just super awkward the whole time? A swarm of 'what ifs' crowded his mind and he didn't get much work done. When the day finally ended, he about booked it out of the classroom, hoping that getting to his practice would help take his mind off things.
In his rush, he ran straight into the back of someone just barely taller than him who'd randomly stopped in the middle of the walkway.
"Shit, sorry. Are you ok?" Y/n asked the stranger, helping him pick up a handful of flyers he had dropped at the collision. He looked to be around the same age as y/n, messy brown hair and gentle features, he looked incredible. There wasn't a single mark on his fair skin, and even though his hair looked untamed, it seemed to fall exactly where the stranger willed it to. He also had a pretty lean build, y/n thought he'd probably be really good at volleyball if he didn't already play it.
The stranger flashed him a smile, "I'm alright, I shouldn't have stopped like that, sorry. Thanks for the help though, you can keep one of them if you'd like." Y/n looked down at the papers he was helping pick up and noticed they were flyers for the volleyball club's match this weekend against Shiratorizawa.
"Are you on the club team here?" Y/n asked, though he felt it was a stupid question given that he was promoting it by hanging up these flyers.
The stranger took no offense to his question though, and nodded. "I'm actually the captain, and the main setter."
"Uh, wow, I'm sorry I'm taking up your time, I'm sure you're busy." He shrugged, the two of them soon standing after having gathered all the loose flyers. "If you want," He offered, "I could take some of the flyers and hand them out to guys on my team, I'm sure they'd like to watch." The captain gave him a slightly confused look, but happily handed him a small stack of the papers.
They started walking towards the main entrance of the school and continued talking about volleyball, the captain immensely interested in y/n's team.
"So you play on a team composed of people from all around Miyagi, not one neighborhood or school in particular? And its aged 16-24?" Y/n nodded in response to each of his questions. "That sounds like it could be a lot of fun, but who do you play against? How do you guys practice if everybody's spread out?"
He explained it the best he could, their system was slightly more complex than the school's. "Those of us that live close to each other practice everyday, and once a week we choose somewhere in Miyagi to meet up and practice as a group. There are other groups in Miyagi that we play against, and some from other prefectures too. City league sports are actually pretty popular, but a lot of people don't know they exist because they're wrapped up in their school's club."
They kept going back and forth until they'd reached the separation point, the stranger headed over to the gyms, and y/n headed out onto the sidewalk to get to his own court.
"Before we go our separate ways, what's your name? I'd like to join one of your practices sometime if that's ok." Y/n was honestly elated to hear that from the captain. Sure Iwa had told him all about how great their team was, and even a little about this captain, but y/n really wanted to see it for himself.
"You can just call me y/n, I'm in class 3-B. What about you?" He replied, extending his hand.
"Oikawa, Tōru." He stated, firmly shaking y/n's hand. "I'm in 3-A, It's nice to meet you y/n, I look forward to playing with you sometime." Oikawa left, off to his gym, and y/n off to his court. He was contemplating texting Iwa to cancel his blind date, not wanting to go out with someone on Oikawa's team after having just met him. He'd rather just go out with the captain, but with the way he looked? There was no way he didn't have a girlfriend or something already.
Y/n tried to keep his mind off the date and the captain, he just wanted to play his game without any distractions.
He was unsuccessful. He was a wing spiker for his team, and he missed well over half of the sets he got. Luckily it was just a regular practice, not the full group one, that was in a few days still. He repeatedly apologized to his teammates, but they didn't hold it against him.
"You seem pretty lost today, what's going on?" His setter asked, while everyone was getting some water.
Y/n sighed, looking up at the sky and taking in the clouds. He loved that they practiced outside, it was so much nicer than being stuck in a gym. "A friend of mine who's on the volleyball team at school has been begging to set me up on a blind date with someone on his team, and I finally agreed to it. It'll be just after we're both done today."
"That sounds like fun! Why aren't you more excited?" Y/n shrugged,
"I met the captain of their team today, and he's everything I could want, but there's no way someone like him is single. I just think it'll be weird if I go out with someone on his team while we just met, I don't know." He mumbled, but his teammates understood his unease about the situation.
One of the older guys on their team, he'd just turned 21, clapped him on the back. "You never know, maybe he's the one you got set up with!" Y/n hadn't even thought about that, Iwa did talk about that captain pretty often...But there was still no way he was single, surely. "Just don't think about it to hard, it's always been your downfall. Live in the moment, y/n!" He weakly smiled at his teammates, thanking them for the confidence boosters.
They got back to their practice shortly after, and y/n's tact started returning.
About an hour and half later his practice had come to an end, and he finally got to start freaking about his blind date. When he got home, he destroyed his closet looking for something to wear, not loving any of his options. He stared at his clothes for several minutes before he realized they weren't going to change by him staring at them. He opted to take a shower and come back, hoping he'd maybe get an idea along the way.
When he'd finished, he threw on a pair of sweats and went back to his room, where he was surprised to find someone sifting through his clothing pile.
"Iwa?" He questioned, guessing that it was his friend by the back of his head. The spiky hair wasn't hard to miss, and soon the intruder had turned around and waved to him.
"Your sister let me in, I figured you'd need help finding an outfit." Y/n rolled his eyes, but didn't get in the way, secretly grateful for the help. "You should wear this, you're going to dinner so it's better to be like business casual. I know that's what he's going for..." Iwa mumbled, now kicking through Y/n's shoes until he found something he liked. Y/n took the outfit from his hands so he could more thoroughly dig through all of his belongings.
"I'll go put this on I guess...?" Iwa was too captivated by his current task to say anything, so y/n just disappeared back into the bathroom to change. He'd picked out a black button down that y/n had forgotten he owned, and a pair of pleated off-white slacks. When he'd assembled it, he actually quite liked it, albeit a bit surprised by Iwa's ability to style an outfit.
He went back to the room, Iwa complimenting him on how it looked. "Now, just add some accessories and keep a few buttons undone and you'll be ready. I set shoes by the door for you, so let's go." Y/n nodded, quickly putting on a few of his favorite rings and a small silver chain, leaving a few of the buttons on his shirt undone like Iwa had told him.
Iwa lead him out the door and they walked for a few blocks, y/n soon knowing where they were going. He'd seen the restaurant a few times, not actually having gotten a chance to try it yet. Iwa sent him off on his own once they were across the street from the restaurant.
"Good luck! Don't take it too seriously, have some fun ok?" He vigorously shook y/n's shoulders before pushing him towards the crosswalk. Y/n gave him a final wave, and made his way to the restaurant.
~
Oikawa checked his watch, he was pretty early. He didn't mind though, he'd be able to get a good table and get some time to figure out how he wanted to play tonight. He'd agreed to the blind date because it was Iwa suggesting it, he knew that despite the dick he was, Iwa wouldn't set him up with someone he wouldn't at least somewhat like. After earlier though, he didn't really want to do this. Bumping into y/n was the highlight of his day, he'd immediately found the guy more than attractive. He acted distant though, as if he didn't want to get close to Tōru for some reason, but he couldn't be sure, they'd just met.
You're not here for him though, focus. As much as he wanted the evening to already be over, he would entertain his date and ensure they both had a nice enough time. He'd hate for it to be a total waste of time and money so he told himself he'd stick it through no matter what.
Several minutes passed, and it was nearly the agreed upon time now, Oikawa becoming slightly nervous he'd be stood up even though they didn't know each other.
"Eh? Oikawa? What're you doing here?" He'd been looking at the menu, but the familiar voice jarred him. He looked over, and noticed the waitress was gesturing for him to sit, and saying she'd be back to take our orders in a few minutes.
"Y/n! I'm, uh-my friend set me up on a blind date, what a coincidence seeing you here. You must be meeting your boyfr- I mean your partner or something. You look great!" Oikawa felt his face heating up, he shouldn't have just assumed that y/n was queer, and now he'd made things weird, awesome.
Y/n didn't seem phased by his words though, in fact he started laughing. "That damn Hajime." The realization soon settled on Oikawa, y/n was his blind date. Here he'd been, hoping that it would happen, and he had gotten exactly what he'd wanted.
"Well, it's good to see you again, so soon!" Y/n smiled, "What're the odds?" Oikawa chucked, relieved y/n hadn't reacted strangely to his mumblings before. Y/n opened his menu, sifting through the options, but couldn't seem to pick one out.
"Can I recommend something?" Oikawa asked.
Y/n looked up at him and immediately closed his menu, setting his gaze on Oikawa, lightly laughing as he accepted his invitation. "God please, there's so much to chose from I can barely think." Oikawa giggled and pointed out a few options that had caught his eye, but he noticed that y/n wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying. He just kept his eyes on Oikawa while he spoke, it felt like he was more focused on his movements than what he was actually saying.
Oikawa quieted when the waitress came back and asked for their orders, y/n gesturing for him to go first. "I'll have a bowl of Nabeyaki Udon, please." She smiled at him, and moved her focus to y/n.
"I'll have the same, thank you." She nodded, and left the two once again.
"Not very creative, y/n." He commented, y/n quickly rolling his eyes.
"I couldn't decide! If it's good enough for you to eat, I'm sure it'll be more than fine for me too." Y/n nervously laughed, Oikawa noticing him shifting in his seat and playing with his hands. He was nervous. Oikawa couldn't decide whether he wanted to say to say something or not, he didn't want to make things worse by any means but he didn't want y/n to be that nervous to be on a date with him.
He pursed his lips for a moment, then did his best to offer the nervous a kind smile. "Why're you so shaken up? Didn't want it to be me?" He joked, hoping y/n would pick up on the tone in his voice.
Thankfully, it seemed like he had. "No, no, I'm glad it's you! I mean, it's not a bad thing that it's you. It's actually kind of nice since we already met." He rambled, but the nervous energy that surrounded him seemed to fade. "I just, I dunno, I couldn't imagine that you could possibly be...single, I guess." He said, Oikawa's eyebrows raising in surprise. "No offense! It's just that you're so, charismatic and uh, yeah you're- fuck." He buried his head in his hands, Oikawa chuckling at his state.
"It's ok, maybe I was just waiting for you to come along..." He smirked, y/n's head moving from his hands onto the table, the tips of his ears having turned pink. "Aw, blushing for me? I'm honored!" Y/n couldn't even attempt to look at Oikawa.
"Will you shut up for a few minutes so I can fucking relax?!" Oikawa laughed, and reached his arms out to rest his hands on y/n's.
"No." When y/n felt Oikawa's hands on his own, he immediately looked up at him. He didn't try to move his hands out from under Tōru's, which he was grateful for, but he couldn't seem to string any words together.
The waitress saved him, having reappeared at their table with the food they'd ordered. Oikawa retracted his hands from y/n's as his and the other's bowls were placed in front of them. They both thanked her and started digging into their food. Things were quiet for several minutes, neither really wanting to attempt conversation while they ate, but Tōru could tell the tension between them had largely dissipated.
After they'd eaten, they made small talk, about hobbies, favorite colors, all the usual. Eventually, the check came to them and Oikawa managed to pay for everything, much to y/n's dismay. They'd argued as much as they could've until the waitress had shown up again and Oikawa forced the bill out of y/n's hands.
"I'll pay next time, it's only fair." Y/n said as they were leaving the restaurant.
"Next time? Another date, you mean?" He questioned, hoping to see y/n change colors again. This time though, y/n put a sliver of confidence in himself and his response.
"Obviously, you couldn't keep your eyes or your hands to yourself. Of course there'd be another date." The way he raised an eyebrow at Oikawa reminded him a bit of himself, but he loved that y/n could dish it back to him. "Anyway," he ventured, "Can I walk you home? Unless you wanted to do something else."
Truthfully, Tōru didn't want the night to end. He longed to come up with activity after activity so he could stay with y/n, he had a calming presence which helped ease Tōru's ever-crowded mind. He was always thinking about volleyball and school, always about how he could be improving or what he'd been doing wrong. But tonight - tonight he hadn't thought about anything except for y/n, making him laugh or blush, or just listening to what he had to say.
"Hey, are you there? Did I scare you or something?" He looked up, now realizing he'd totally spaced out and didn't even know for how long.
He blinked a few times, and looked around. Apparently they'd ended up walking to some park he didn't immediately recognize. "Sorry, I just got distracted, my bad. Also, where are we?" Y/n lightly laughed and looked around, apparently also not having realized they'd kept walking directionless.
"This, oh this is the park where I practice! I guess I came here out of habit, the court we use is over there." He pointed over to where a net was set up and there was a rectangle of concrete with painted lines. "So, uh, did you want me to walk you home? Or...?" Ah right his question from earlier. Let's try not to forget to answer it this time.
"Well, I don't have plans for the rest of the evening, and it's not super late yet... But if you do, then we can totally-"
"I don't." Y/n interrupted, his clam gaze making Oikawa a bit anxious. Ever since they left the restaurant, the vibes had completely switched, Oikawa was forgetting who he was and what was going on while y/n flirted and stayed collected. "I've still got my keys, I could grab a ball if you want to hit a few." Finally, something Tōru understood. If there was one thing he couldn't look bad doing, it was volleyball.
"If you insist." He replied. "Try not to get too intimidated though, I'm one of the best y'know." Again, y/n didn't falter at his attempt to fluster him.
"But you haven't made it to nationals like Miya has, so why should I be scared?" MIYA? Y/n knew someone who played at the national level? Now he wasn't so sure about what he'd said. Of course he knew he was a fantastic setter, one of the best in his own opinion, but he'd not played against or with someone who was a regular at nationals.
At an attempt to collect himself, he waved off y/n's comment. "So what? Just because I haven't made it to nationals yet doesn't mean I'm not the best setter out there."
"I guess we'll just have to see." Y/n shot back, before jogging over to the storage shed near the court. He dug out a volleyball and tossed it to Oikawa, who gently received it without a second thought.
"You said you're wing spiker, right?" He asked, y/n nodded. "What kind of set do you like?" This time, y/n only shrugged.
"You'll just have to figure it out, 'best setter out there'." He sneered, walking onto the concrete platform and towards the right side. Oikawa scoffed and went off towards the left. I'll find out, on the first one. He told himself, though it wasn't the most realistic, but he always like a challenge.
Oikawa set, and y/n spiked over and over again, Oikawa priding himself on figuring out what y/n liked within his first (but likely his second or third) set. They only stopped when it had gotten too dark out to see very clearly over the net, both of them having a slight sweat. As y/n put the ball back, Oikawa asked him more about how he knew the person from nationals, it bothered him that y/n might have had a setter that he thought was better.
"Oh, Miya? God I don't even remember how we met, I think he plays for a city team in his spare time." Y/n said, "Yeah, we met at a tournament. His team beat us, but only barely, we did five sets and it was down to the last, the score I think was 20-22 in the end." Oikawa whistled, he knew how exhausting a game like that could be. "Anyway, after we played against each other, he approached me and almost begged me to let him set for me." He laughed to himself, but Oikawa's mind was everywhere. "We played a little after that game and became good friends, he always updates me on his tournaments and games."
Oikawa's fatal flaw was that he had a massive god-complex, and right now it was definitely being complex. His mind was about to take a total downward turn when y/n punched his shoulder.
"Don't look like that, you idiot." Y/n sneered.
"What? Look like what?" He demanded.
"Don't get jealous. Don't get upset just because I know some great setter, I can't even begin to compare you two and you've never even met him. Don't get your tits in a twist so quickly, now come on it's dark, we're both tired, and it's obviously past your bedtime." Tōru's mind went blank, even if he could think up a response, there'd be now way he'd bring himself to say it. He hadn't been put in his place like that before, sure Iwa gave him reality checks every now and then, but nobody could read him like that.
Y/n started walking, but turned to face Tōru and held out his hand, waiting for him to take it. He didn't say anything, just waved his hand around and stared at Tōru until he finally took it. Y/n's hand was warm, and strong, just like a spiker's should be.
"Where's your house?" Y/n asked him, his face void of any snark or ego that it had only moments earlier.
"It's up by the school, two streets north." Y/n nodded and confidently lead him in the general direction. "How are you so calm all of a sudden?" He found himself asking, the events of their date confusing him.
Y/n chuckled as he looked to the sky. "After you ripped the bill out of my hands at that restaurant, I knew you weren't as serious or intimidating as I had thought you were when I first met you. Our conversations and getting to hit your sets after we ate was so much more relaxed, I just felt like I could be myself. I don't like formal situations like sit down dinners at fancy restaurants, I didn't even know what to wear, Iwa picked this out."
Hearing that Hajime had picked out what y/n was wearing made Tōru feel better, he thought he was a total disaster today but he hadn't been alone. "I thought this was going to be easy, but you just keep making me forget how to think." He lightly squeezed Tōru's hand at the comment,
"That's probably a good thing, isn't it? You probably think way to much." He sighed,
"You're definitely right. Guess I'm extremely lucky for having you physically run into me today."
Y/n smiled, "You're so welcome."
They approached Oikawa's neighborhood, and he directed y/n to his house, y/n only letting go of Oikawa's hand when they got to his front steps. "Thanks, for tonight. It was fun, I'm looking forward to next time." Y/n said, a slight blush dusting his cheeks and the bridge of his nose.
"Me too, even though I'll probably see you again tomorrow, right?" Y/n's face dropped, he'd totally forgotten they went to school together.
Thoroughly embarrassed, he rubbed the back of his neck and tried to laugh it off. "Eh, true- our classes are neighbors." He took a deep breath and faced Tōru, "Well, I'll see you later. Have a good night, Oikawa." He barely got a chance to reply before y/n had turned around to leave, so he grabbed the shoulder closest to him, and turned the boy to face him again.
"What, no goodbye kiss? We're basically dating now right?" Y/n turned nearly purple at the comment, definitely not having expected it. He tried stuttering out some kind of response, so Oikawa put him out of his misery and tugged the gent towards him.
He could feel y/n's anxiety melt away as they kissed, his arms wrapping around Tōru's waist, his in return folding around y/n's neck. Y/n couldn't believe what was happening, but he was beyond happy that it was.

Haikiyu!Oikawa Tooru||An Introduction To Dating Him||Haikiyu!Series.
Tumblr media
The Onsen season and the Cherry Blossom season in Japan, is a once in a lifetime visit, that should be there in a bucket list!
Tumblr media
He's a very happy to go lucky volleyball player, he's always smiling, and saying hello to half the town's population. The amount of people he knows around the school, and town is alarming.
With no introduction, to the captain of the Aoba Johsai team, he's a formidable and talented player, you met him through Iwaizumi,
The latter once got a in just statement against him, which could interfere in his course when studying sport's science.
You knew the in and out of the staff, and you shared that class with him, it was you who had talked the faculty members out, and here you were.
"I don't know much about Volleyball, only that it hurts like hell when I tried serving." You once explained,
"Was it underarm? or overarm?"
"Underarm, do you guys just ignore the stinging sensation? or something?"
Iwaizumi worked with the setter who you later learned was Oikawa Tooru,
Maybe it was the amount he smiled so much, or was always so talkative, no stereotypes or judgements, but boys don't usually overshare that much right?
You were the first one who saw through his facade, during that time when you had just come to tell him that you had to close up the gym, he accidentally threw a volleyball at your face.
"I'm sorry, Y/n." He said touching your head to see if any bump had been formed, he took you out to ice-cream the other day.
Despite, his secrecy he's human so he's caring when he's not usually stressed, or rigorously practicing.
He likes that, you are not always so over the top, and yet, still can respect him.
You sometimes carry protein bars which you made at home because he forgets to eat sometimes. The small actions, like sending him a late-night text when you know he's out practicing reminding him to take a break, and drink water, or how sometimes you would bring him milk bread sends butterflies, which once even made him miss a receive,
In return, he's equally supportive. He teases you a lot if you are short, he calls you 'Chibi-chan' or 'Sweetheart.' if you are having a really bad day,
Just another statement, he's got the gift of looks, so he has girls all around him, although he maintains a fair amount of distance from them,
His love language is affection, and acts of service.
You share one or two classes together, and he makes sure he uses them every inch of the time,
When he told you he was planning to go overseas, and now was deciding to postpone it because, he wanted to be with you, you gave him a quick slap across his face, before kissing that spot. "No, you're going to follow your dreams, and then we'll see. Just please don't let me be a distraction, I want to be your support."
Oikawa almost cried that day, he hugged you tightly saying, "He'd make you proud." "You already do that."
He's a perfectionist, which sometimes never allows him to feel satisfied. Sometimes, it can also become an unhealthy competition between you both, to prove your worth.
During that time, it was Iwaizumi you threw a ball at your face, shocking Oikawa and saying, "I already know your dating Shittykawa, but you're supposed to be better than that."
Iwaizumi is your unofficial couple therapist, Oikawa once saw you like a post about flowers and now unexpectedly he brings you every month in the most unexpected times.
Oikawa finds comfort in how gentle you can be, and how you're so supportive.

Longing
Oikawa x m!reader (he/him/his)
I just love a good reunion. The little ~~ means change in view or time, it’ll make sense I promise.
Word count: 3548
~
He wished they hadn’t moved to Tokyo. He loved his school in Miyagi, Seijoh had everything he’d wanted for high school. He had friends there, he had a life there; but his family had other plans. Y/n had grown up in the Miyagi prefecture, he went to Kitagawa Daiichi for junior high, and had gotten accepted into Aoba Johsai, a private high school in the region. When he was in junior high, he’d joined the volleyball team out of pure boredom, none of the other sports had interested him like volleyball did, and his parents insisted he join a club of some kind.
During his time with the volleyball team he’d gotten pretty good, and he’d made friends with this wonder-kid named Tōru. There was another one just like him in the year below them, but he always seemed so tense, y/n didn’t really have it in him to attempt a friendship there. There was also Iwaizumi who he had been quick to befriend, always enjoying how he interacted so playfully yet serious with Tōru. Together, the three of them went on to Aoba Johsai and immediately joined the volleyball club, eager to play the game with a bigger audience.
However, y/n had only gotten the chance to play with his friends for about a year and a half, before his parents uprooted his life in Miyagi for a much more stressful one in Tokyo. He went to Fukurodani now, and while he loved his teammates and the school in general, he desperately missed his friends from Miyagi. During his first year of high school at Seijoh, volleyball had brought him and Tōru a lot closer, mostly because they had the same work ethic. Their positions couldn’t have been more different, y/n was the team’s libero and Tōru their setter, they often only barely connected the ball to one another.
But, y/n was more determined than most to do well and it was because Tōru’s mindset was so intoxicating. The two would often spend all of their free time practicing together, Iwaizumi joining in when he felt like it. They’d become best friends, but to y/n it had always been more than that.
Tōru Oikawa was possibly the most attractive person y/n had ever known, or will ever know. He had always admired his friend, but when they’d gotten into high school his feelings became much more obvious to himself. Then, when he’d moved away and had to watch his friend from afar, his feelings had become somewhat tangible. Tangible in the way that he was always so jealous and angry that he couldn’t be there, angry that Tōru had this crowd of girls that followed him everywhere and got all of his attention. He took his anger out during practices, working as hard as his body would let him, always staying late or getting up early to keep going.
It was really bad one day when he kept seeing and hearing all about how Seijoh had beat Karasuno, and the feud between the legendary setter Oikawa and new legend Kageyama. Tobio gets to play against him and I don’t.
Since Fukurodani was in an entirely different prefecture than Seijoh, the teams rarely, if ever, got a chance to play against each other. Sure, sometimes little teams from Miyagi got to play with Tokyo teams, but it was all about the connections coaches had with each other. And, since Seijoh had yet to beat Shiratorizawa in the Interhigh, they’d not gotten to nationals where they could’ve taken on Fukurodani.
The power pair from Fukurodani, Bokuto and Akaashi, were quick to notice y/n’s foul mood. They had become friends near immediately when y/n joined their team as a libero, Bokuto absolutely loved having y/n try to receive his spikes. Usually, y/n was more than happy to practice with them and would do whatever they wanted to, but today y/n didn’t even greet them upon entering the gym.
He had gotten changed quickly, and started doing his own warm ups, separating himself from the team. After about fifteen minutes, he’d started going through the routine he always did when he was upset. It was the most intense of the routine’s he had created, and always distracted him from whatever was going on. He liked working hard, but he wasn’t great at regulating it, sometimes he’d just go on and on without taking breaks and find himself lightheaded and near passing out from dehydration.
Akaashi approached him, interrupting the set of sprints y/n had planned. “You’re upset today.” He stated blankly, not usually one to sugarcoat.
Y/n glared at him. “I don’t see how it’s any of your business, go back to Bokuto or something.” He mumbled, but Akaashi didn’t move.
“You’ll either tell me what's going on or I'm telling coach you’re putting yourself in danger and he won’t let you practice.” Y/n scoffed, but he knew Akaashi was dead serious. “Well?”
“Fine. But you can’t tell Bokuto, he can’t keep a secret.” Akaashi nodded, and the two of them went outside to talk, Bokuto attempting to join in, but after receiving a very harsh look from Akaashi, he backed off.
“You remember how I transferred here from Aoba Johsai?” He started, Akaashi nodding. “Well, Oikawa, Iwaizumi, and I have been close friends for a while. We went to the same junior high and we all loved playing volleyball together.” Pausing, he tried to figure out how to word the main part of his problem. He wasn’t sure he’d ever admitted out loud his feelings for his friend, but he didn’t have much of a choice here. “After we got into high school, I kind of came to the abrupt realization that I...liked him. As more than just my best friend.”
“Ah.” Akaashi simply replied, seeming to have put two and two together before y/n had even finished. “You’re upset that you can’t play with him, and probably jealous of that fan club that’s always surrounding him. Right?” Y/n nodded, Akaashi had pretty much hit the nail on the head.
“There was also this kid that we knew in junior high, Kageyama Tobio, and he was just super standoffish, but now even he gets to play with Tōru and I have to stay here.” Even in talking to Akaashi, y/n could hear the animosity that laced his words.
“That’s definitely frustrating, I'll grant you that. But are you seriously going to let that affect how you play the game?” Akaashi asked, nothing friendly in his words. “I don’t think Oikawa would want to know that this is how you’ve been handling it.” The shock y/n felt must’ve been all over his face because Akaashi seemed to take a step back. “It's just--you never know. Maybe you’ll have a chance to play against him soon, you don’t want him to have grown more than you right? Think about making him proud.” Akaashi left him to think about what he’d said, though y/n was still recovering from Akaashi’s scolding.
He’d not seen Akaashi so mad at anyone before, much less himself, usually the two of them got along like brothers. He guessed that maybe having to deal with Bokuto’s emo mode all the time, along with y/n’s anger was starting to get tiring. Akaashi was right though, everything he said was right.
Y/n knew that letting his anger keep a hold on him wasn’t making him any better at playing a team sport, and that Tōru would be mad at him if he learned that this was how he dealt with it. He sighed, trying to expel every ounce of oxygen held in his lungs so that he could refill with fresher air, and hopefully a better composure. He went back to the gym after that and joined his team, apologizing to everyone and the coach for his repeated idiocy and promising it wouldn’t happen anymore.
The weeks following that day were much more fun, both for y/n and the rest of his team. There came a day where upon his entering the gym, he noticed that his teammates had gotten changed, and instead of warming up were crowded around the coach. When Akaashi and Bokuto saw him, they waved him over to them, quick to explain what was going on.
“Coach said he had a surprise for us, nobody knows what’s going on.” Bokuto nearly yelled, he was practically jumping with excitement. “I hope Nekoma is coming over for a practice match, I haven’t gotten to catch up with Kuroo in forever!” Y/n knew that actually wasn’t true, they’d seen Nekoma maybe three weeks prior, but to Bokuto he supposed that was pretty close to forever.
“If it’s a team, which it might not be, it would probably be one from further away, otherwise they’d be here already.” Akaashi suggested, looking towards the entrance of the gym waiting for someone to appear. Y/n selfishly hoped it was Seijoh, but he didn’t get his hopes up. Seijoh liked to keep their friendlies local, usually they went for college students or neighborhood clubs, there was little to no chance that they came all the way down here.
While the Fukurodani students all anxiously chatted, their energy nearly becoming too much for the poor coach. As if on cue, the main doors opened, revealing the red jackets that Bokuto loved so much. The Fukurodani team excitedly ran to great the guests, Bokuto leading the charge and nearly tackling Kuroo in the process. Akaashi went to speak to Kenma, and suddenly y/n was by himself, watching as red and white collided. He was about to head into the mass of students to greet Yaku, another libero and someone he got along with swimmingly when the doors opened again.
This time, turquoise and white flooded through the doors, and y/n nearly fell on his ass. Seijoh? His thoughts raced, his eyes frantically searching the faces of the students filling the gym, some of them waving to him, he could barely bring himself to return the gesture.
Then, he walked in.
“Tōru!” He yelled, his voice nearly getting lost amongst the number of conversations, but the intended audience heard him.
~
Oikawa had been stunned when their bus had pulled into the Fukurodani parking lot, his coach hadn’t told them anything other than they were going to a friendly match. His heart had started racing the moment he realized where they were, y/n’s school. He and y/n had been friends forever, and it had devastated him when he moved away. In the time he’d lost him, they stayed in contact mostly through social media, sometimes texting each other but usually just though seeing the other’s posts or watching games.
Of course, Oikawa missed playing on the court with y/n, with him there was always this energy and vigor that filled him to play his best. Iwaizumi did what he could to encourage the same kind of attitude, but it wasn’t the same as y/n. But, more than just playing together, he missed being around him. Talking, laughing, playing video games, eating, cursing each other out when the other did something stupid. He missed it all, and more than he’d like to admit, his heart ached whenever he turned around and saw Watari instead of y/n.
Iwaizumi always made fun of Oikawa’s state of dismay whenever it seemed he was missing y/n, always calling him Oikawa’s ‘boyfriend’ or something similar because of how much his mood changed when y/n was the topic of interest. Before Iwaizumi had brought it up, Oikawa had never thought about if he liked y/n as something other than just his best friend. Although, after he moved away Oikawa came to the brutal realization that y/n had a much stronger impact on his life than he had thought. Now, being without him was like torture.
“Tōru!” He heard his name, though only barely, but he knew that voice better than any other. He looked around the gym, searching for the face he knew matched that voice, but finding himself agitated when he couldn’t see him.
“That way, shithead.” Iwa pointed, Oikawa bolting.
Y/n ran to meet him and soon Oikawa had wrapped his arms around y/n and was just slightly lifting him off the ground, swinging him around as much as he could. After he set him down, he just took the moment to hold y/n, feeling his hair with one hand, the other keeping him pressed against him. Oikawa had always been a bit taller than y/n, and so he found himself laying his head on the shorter, taking in the smell of his hair.
Y/n pulled himself away from Oikawa, shaking his head with a smile. “I missed you so much, Tōru!” Seeing his face, in person, so close--Oikawa realized he was really restraining himself from just kissing the boy in front of him.
Trying to keep some of his composure he returned the phrase. “I missed you too, y/n. Though it is your fault for leaving me, so I think you owe me.” Y/n’s brow furrowed,
“My fault!? You think I would’ve left you on purpose?!” Oikawa shrugged,
“Who’s to know?” He joked, closing his eyes and shrugging. “Maybe you just secretly hated me so much you had to move schools to get away from me!” He opened his eyes wide and covered his mouth as if in shock, y/n just rolling his eyes and lightly punching Oikawa’s shoulder.
“Yeah, sure. I’m not Iwa, you know. I can actually enjoy your shitty little comments and games.” Oikawa chuckled, that much was true. “Besides, I think it was harder for me to leave than it was for you to lose me anyway.” What? Is that actually what he thinks? He thought, now thoroughly confused.  Did he not express his love for y/n enough when they were younger? Surely y/n understood how much he meant to him right? Oikawa searched y/n’s features, hoping to find some kind of answer to his questions but found nothing he liked. Y/n looked serious.
“That’s not true, it killed me when you told me you were leaving.” Y/n just rolled his eyes again, this time shaking his head and dropping his gaze to the floor.
“You don’t have to pretend, Tōru. Come on, we should join everybody else.” Oikawa was speechless. Y/n really thought Oikawa didn’t care about him, when in reality it was so far the opposite.
Y/n had taken off towards the massive group of athletes and was gesturing for Oikawa to join him, so he put the issue behind him, promising himself he’d make things right later tonight.
When Oikawa had caught up with Y/n, he introduced him to his friends Bokuto and Akaashi from Fukurodani, and Kuroo, Kenma, and Yaku from Nekoma. He could tell how tight knit the six of them were, and couldn’t help but feel like his small trio of him, Iwa, and y/n had been replaced. Akaashi was eyeing him carefully, though he wasn’t sure why, but soon after they’d been introduced the coaches had gathered to get the practice matches started.
Each team was split into two, and matched up with a team from a different school; each pairing would play one full set and the loser would have to take a lap of sorts. Each team would get to play four sets, allowing for them to play with each other team not of their own school. The matches carried on, only small water breaks between sets, Oikawa and y/n still not having played against each other.
This was the last round of sets for the athletes, and it would be the very last set played that day that was Aoba Johsai v Fukurodani, or as they saw it, Oikawa and Iwaizumi v y/n.
When the match started, there was an energy on the court unlike the other matches, Oikawa and Iwaizumi doing whatever they could to make the ball hit the ground on the other side, y/n preventing it. The teams went back and forth, staying in deuce for several points past the typical 25, but eventually Fukurodani won, 31-29.
Exhausted, Bokuto and Akaashi as well as the rest of the team clapped y/n on the back for the incredible receives and digs he’d made throughout the game. Y/n was heavily panting, but as he wiped the sweat from his brow he grinned at Oikawa and Iwaizumi, obviously pleased with the result. Oikawa was immediately ready for another round after that, but what he wanted more was to play with y/n, rather than against him, though that was fun too.
The coaches excused everyone to get changed and showered, saying that there was still about an hour before either team was going to be leaving, so they could socialize all they wanted. The two got changed and cleaned quickly, wanting to spend as much time as possible together before Oikawa had to go back to Seijoh.
They decided to go outside since it was warm, and sat on the grass outside the gym. “Why didn’t Iwaizumi join?” Y/n asked, looking back towards the gym for their third. “Is he still getting changed?”
“No, actually I asked him if I could talk to you alone.” Y/n looked at him surprised, but stayed quiet, not wanting to interrupt him. “Earlier, you said that you thought your leaving was harder for you than it was for me, you said that I was pretending when I said it killed me when you left.” Y/n slowly nodded, not sure where this conversation was headed. “I’m telling you, it really did hurt me when you left.”
He was worried about being so...sappy, with y/n. He just knew that if y/n really didn’t think he cared about him, there was no way he felt the way Oikawa did for him.
“I don’t see how that’s possible, Tōru, you’ve got hoards of fans and friends to keep you company, what was I other than another one of them?” Oikawa could feel his heart beating faster, he was more than upset that y/n felt that way about him, how could he possibly think that he was just another fan?
“We’ve spent years together! Practiced hours and hours together, how can you think that you’re just another blank face in my life, when yours has always had the most detail?” He spoke hastily, worried that if he didn't, the words may never come. His eyes begged for y/n to understand what he was to him, yearned for him to feel the same way.
“What?” Y/n’s brow knit, as if he was trying to translate a language he didn’t know.
I guess I'll always have to dumb things down for you, y/n. “If I kiss you, will you understand what I'm trying to say?” Oikawa moved closer to y/n, sitting directly in front of him, their knees barely colliding. Y/n didn’t look like he was anywhere near a response, but he muttered something that sounded like a ‘maybe’ while every centimeter of skin on his face morphed to sunset shades of pink and red. “May I?” Oikawa asked, still scared he had it wrong.
“You have to ask?” Was how y/n replied, Oikawa not even getting the chance to be first. Y/n put a hand on the back of Oikawa’s neck and guided him into a gentle, but fervent kiss. Oikawa didn’t skip a beat, putting both of his hands on y/n’s head, and pulling him towards the other, until Oikawa fell onto his back, y/n being pulled on top of him in return.
~
They laughed, but y/n made no attempt to move off of the setter he currently had pinned to the ground, which Oikawa didn’t seem to mind.
“I guess I look pretty stupid now huh? Saying all that stuff about you not caring that I left...” Y/n said, his voice trailing and his eyes shifting from Oikawa’s to the grass beside his head.
“Yeah, you do. I mean come on!” Y/n laughed, he was glad he had been wrong. It had just seemed like such an impossibility for him, considering how many people pined after Tōru on a daily basis. Not to mention Tōru had seemed to stop talking to him after he’d left, sure the occasional ‘how are you?’ text was nice, but it wasn’t anything to write home about.
“Well maybe, if it wasn’t for someone’s horrible texting habits, I would’ve understood sooner!” Tōru’s mouth hung open in shock, but y/n raised an eyebrow at him, and his mouth closed.
“Sure, maybe. But you knew about how little I texted people before you left!” He complained, y/n just shook his head,
“Shut up or I'll just have to make you, somehow.” Tōru grinned, setting his hands so his head was resting on them.
“Sounds like I should talk a whole lot more then.”

Can You Hear Me?  1 - Birthday
When someone turns 17, they are able to find their soulmate. Soulmates can communicate telepathically and although they are not “required” to fall in love, 90% of them do. When your soulmate is younger than you, you simply won’t get a response. Same as if they’re dead, which if you think about it, kind of sucks. If your soulmate is in fact younger than you, then you’ll hear from them when they come of age. Might be months, years, decades if you're into that. Kidding.
It’s been a week since you turned 17 and you still hadn’t tried to contact your soulmate yet. There were many reasons for this. Numero 1, you didn’t think you were ready for a relationship. Again, not all soulmates turn out to be lovers, and ironically, you wished yours would. If you weren’t ready, you didn’t want to blow it. Number 2, you really don’t like talking to people. Specifically strangers. Until you mastered the art of ordering a chicken sandwich on the phone, there was no way you would be contacting your soulmate. There’s a couple other reasons but those are the main two.
Mei’s been bothering you about it but you claimed it was because you were waiting for her to turn 17 so you could reach out together. “The least I could do as your best friend.” She knows that you’re worried about doing it alone, so she drops it.
“The rest of the class period is for you to get a head start on the homework due in two days. Please use your time wisely,” Mr. Taguchi announced to the rest of the students. “I will leave the previous math problems on the board as examples. If you need help, come to my desk.”
You leaned your head against the window and gazed out the glass. It was the end of the day, the last thing you wanted to do was homework. While the class buzzed around you, you watched a couple of the 3rd years move around the courtyard collecting... soil samples? When you took a closer look, you recognized a familiar head of messy brown hair and couldn’t help but stare as he walked around. You snapped out of it when a girl with black hair bent down next to him, a little too close.
"Are you okay?" Mei asked, tapping you on your head that was now buried in your hands.
"Yea, I just hate it when a more attractive person has a crush on the same person I do," you groaned, looking up at her with a rather bored expression on your face.
"She's right," Inko added. "It's like performing in a talent show and finding out that Beyonce is going before you."
Somehow, the way she worded it made you feel even worse. ”Why would you say that?”
Yes, you had a crush on Oikawa Tooru. You’re not sure when it happened or why but you had grown a liking to him. He was definitely attractive and that might've had something to do with why you liked him. But the way he acted is what really caught your attention. Sure, he could be a jerk sometimes, all high and mighty, but then he would turn around and act like a complete cinnamon roll. His childish side was really cute.
You spared a glance out the window again and saw Oikawa holding up one of the vials of soil and looking at it, a pout spread across his lips. Adorable.
As Inko and Mei talked back and forth about which anime was better and why, you doodled in your notebook, covering  old notes with ladybugs and cats.
“What do you mean you haven’t watched Inuyashiki?” Inko gasped. “I recommended it to you months ago!”
“Yeah, along with 20 other things, it’s in my watchlist. I’ll get there eventually,” Mei grumbled and blew her bangs out of her face. “Bet you haven’t watched A World Only God Knows yet.”
“Actually I was planning on starting it today. You just reminded me.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“What about Avatar The Last Airbender? I told you to watch that one too.”
“That’s not an anime.”
“No, but you should still watch it.”
You colored in one of your cat’s faces, leaving the eyes and the inside of the ears white. A sudden chill ran down your spine and you turned around to see one of the kids behind you had opened a window. Even the slightest gust of wind gave you goosebumps and you returned to your drawings, shivering a little.
Sounds from outside carried in and every now and then your eyes would flick to the window to catch a glimpse of Oikawa. You had never talked to him before, at least, not exchanged dialogue. You didn’t want to just go and strike up a conversation either. He was a handsome, popular 3rd year and you were a quiet 2nd year. You didn't talk to anybody, let alone the captain of the boys volleyball team. You kept to admiring him from afar, even if it could be annoying at times.
The 3rd years had all gathered around the teacher, probably about to head back inside. Oikawa was poking Iwaizumi in his side and clearly not paying attention to what the teacher was saying. Iwa would slightly push him but Oikawa came right back.
Another gust of wind hit you and you put your pencil down.
“I’mma get my jacket from my locker, I’ll be back,” you informed the bickering girls in front of you and went up to Mr. Taguchi to ask for a hall pass. He gave it to you and you headed straight for your locker.
It was warmer in the halls, considering none of the windows had been opened, which was nice. Since the math classroom wasn’t far from your locker, you were able to get your jacket and head back quickly.
While rewinding your steps, you looked out the window and noticed that the 3rd years weren’t there anymore. That could only mean…
You first noticed the teacher's head, rising from the staircase. Followed by the rest of his body and the students. They were on the opposite end of the hallway which meant that you needed to walk by all of them in order to get back to class. The thought of turning around and staying in the bathroom until they were gone, or just pretending like you forgot something in your locker passed through your head. But it was too late. You had made eye contact with the teacher.
She smiled and you gave a small smile back, bowing slightly and keeping your head down to avoid looking at the students. You almost made it through when the sound of a girl laughing echoed through your ears and you looked up curious. It was a group of girls giggling about something on a phone. You were about to look down again when you caught a boy staring at you. He had really short, light brown hair and small eyes. You recognized him as the new 3rd year transfer that you had helped earlier that year. You had found him looking lost in the hallways and searching for the robotics room. You talked for a little while showing him the way and learned that his name was Hanamaki (I know he didn’t transfer originally but for the sake of the plot, let it be).
The boy smiled and waved, you gave a small smile and waved back to not be rude. He then turned to one of the boys next to him and started chatting with him, the boy throwing a glance in your direction. Almost instantly, you moved your eyes elsewhere and noticed Oikawa a couple feet in front of you. He stood behind Iwaizumi with his head resting on his back, arms just swinging underneath him. His mouth was moving but you couldn’t hear a word he was saying. But it couldn’t have been that important since Iwa kept a straight face the entire time.
As you were looking away, you noticed Iwa’s eyes flick to yours but you didn’t meet his gaze and instead hurriedly put your sweatshirt on. You zipped it up to your chin and put your hands in your pockets, glad to have finally made it past the herd of students and suddenly feeling the overwhelming desire to go home.
***
The music club is a relatively quiet place. There are only 7 other people in the club besides you and Mei, but that makes practice much easier because there aren’t as many people hogging instruments. It is mostly independent too, which you appreciated. You entered the room and dropped your bags by the door. Mei was already there, along with another girl and boy. You hadn’t really had a full conversation with either of them, and you weren’t planning to.
“Inko left these forms for the school camping trip before she went to the art room,” Mei approached you with a couple papers in hand. “Did you wanna go?”
“I don’t know. Sleeping in a tent with my classmates doesn’t exactly appeal to me.” You commented but took the permission slips anyway, briefly scanning them. The activities planned looked fun but not if you had to do them with strangers. “Are you going?”
“I might. If you or Inko will, I’ll go.”
Seems like she had the same idea in mind. “Inko probably will. Didn’t she go last year?”
“Yeah, she did. And she came back with a boyfriend.”
You giggled, remembering Inko and the boy she had dated for less than a week before dumping. “They didn’t last very long.”
Truthfully, he wasn’t a bad guy, you thought he was cute and he absolutely adored Inko, but she wasn’t having it.
“What happened to him anyway?” you asked Mei and strode over to the empty piano bench. “I don’t think I’ve seen him at all this year.”
“I wanna say he moved cities…? But I dunno,” Mei followed you and leaned against the wall.
You pressed a couple of the keys, playing a quick melody. “When do I have to turn the permission slip in?” Not that asking would help, you'd forget it in an hour.
“A month. Just don’t forget. They don’t accept them late.”
You nodded and stole a glance at the guitar next to Mei. It was a newer addition to the club and you took it upon yourself to learn it, but it was a lot harder than the piano. Then again, the first instrument you learn always seems the easiest.
“Did you want me to pass you that guitar?” Mei noticed you staring at the acoustic and gave it to you. “You’re really set on learning every instrument in this room, aren’t you?”
”Mmhm. But it's making my fingers sore..”
“You’ll get used to it once you build calluses. Maybe if you’re confident enough by the end of the year you can play in the competition.”
“You’re funny,” you said sarcastically. “That’s the other guy’s spotlight. I would never.”
Both of you threw a glance towards one of the other club members riffing away in the corner. For the past 2 years he has played as the electric guitarist in the music competition. Even if you did practice all year to perform, he would still be better.
“Maybe he’ll get sick or mysteriously injured,” Mei offered.
You only shook your head and laughed. “Now Mei, let's not doom the poor child."
"But you said you would participate this year!"
"Yeah, I did. But I was planning on just submitting a song or something. I don't actually have to perform."
"But that's not the same…"
"Hey, if a spot opens up I'll volunteer… maybe," you set the field trip forms on the piano and laid the guitar across your lap. “Do you want to play a song with me?”
“As long as you don’t outshine my vocals again,” Mei sat across from you on a cajon and smacked it. "If you don't end up performing you better have written one bomb ass song."
***
Music club ended about the same time as volleyball practice. Because of that, you often see Oikawa everyday afterschool. The music room was farther away from the school entrance than the gym, so when you were walking to the subway station, you basically followed him for a block. To make it even better, you guys took the same train. Your station was 1 stop early, but you were still in the same car for at least 9.
The doors closed behind you and you took the closest open seat, which happened to be across from Oikawa’s. You sat down without looking at him and pulled your backpack onto your lap, taking your earbuds out and putting one in your ear. The ride was at least 15 minutes and you wanted to be distracted from the crowds around you.
A couple walked into the train, hand in hand, and for a split second, you were tempted to say something to your soulmate. There’s no way you could mess up a simple “hey” right? But as quickly as that thought came, you pushed it away. Absolutely not. You told Mei you were gonna wait for her and even though she doesn’t really care, you were gonna stay true to your word.
Your stop came and you got up, glancing at Oikawa. He was slouching with his feet outstretched, sports bag beneath the seat, hood over his head and covering his chin. His phone was in his hands and he looked like he was in a very intense game. Your lips twitched at the sight and looked away before he noticed you staring.
The doors opened and you got off. You looked back but with the other people crowding to get on, you couldn’t make him out. It’s okay, you’ll see him tomorrow anyway.
***
A month flew by quickly.
The deadline for the camping trip permission slip was today. Mei continued to hag you but said her parents wouldn’t let her go because she had too many missing assignments. The only way they would let her leave was by raising her grades, but knowing Mei, she didn't love camping nearly enough to commit to more school work. And if she wouldn't go, neither would you.
Today also happened to be Mei’s birthday and the first thing she asked was if you were ready to talk to your soulmate. You lied.
“Yeah, you?”
“Absolutely. On the count of three. Ready?”
Your eyes widened. You didn’t even get a minute of preparation. “W-wait! Gimme a couple seconds..”
She gave you the side eye. “You’ve had more than enough time. Were those past couple weeks not enough for you?”
“Yeah, yeah, just hold on,” you took a deep breath in and gripped the straps to your backpack. It’s only a big deal if you make it a big deal. And if you’re lucky, they’ll be younger than you and not respond.
“...You good?”
You nodded. “One…”
“Two… three!”
Your mind went blank. What should you say? Suddenly, a simple “hi” wasn’t gonna cut it for you. You looked at Mei, she had her eyes closed. The first thing you say should be romantic, memorable. These would be the first words you would say to your soulmate ever. This was important, so why can't you think of anything?I can do this… You sucked in one more breath of air and closed your eyes.
“OMG I heard him!!” Mei bounced up and down excitedly. “Did yours say anything?”
You opened your eyes and looked at her. How did she do that so fast? “No, not yet..” That wasn’t completely a lie.
“Aww that’s okay, maybe he’s not old enough. That gives you more time, right?”
She’s right. But you didn’t need more time. Your adrenaline was already pumping and you just wanted to get it over with. And if you didn’t do it now, you would feel like a chicken. And that couldn’t happen.
Mei grabbed your hand and started pulling you with her past the school gate. “You’ll never guess who my soulmate is. Oddly enough, I don’t think I’ve even met him properly yet.”
Screw this. Can you hear me?
Yes, I can hear you!

PARALLELS — OIKAWA TOORU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: oikawa tooru x reader content: gn! reader, long distance relationship, light angst, fluff
Tumblr media
when the cherry blossoms bloom, you think of oikawa. of days spent hunting for beetles at the base of the trunk when you, he, and iwaizumi were kids. afternoons in middle school when oikawa would roll his eyes at you and repeat again: “parallel lines will never intersect” and ignore your “what if”s. the evening when oikawa pulled you aside during your three-way graduation party and kissed you under the canopy of brown branches and pink flowers.
“oi,” iwaizumi’s gruff voice breaks you from your memories and he asks, “thinking about him again?”
“missing him, more like it,” you say. you glance back at the cherry blossoms, petals translucent in the light of the setting sun. you breathe in the fresh scent. you loop your arm through iwaizumi’s and drag him close to you for a selfie. he offers a small smile to the camera, a dim contrast to your beaming grin.
“we’ve gotta hustle,” he says, checking his watch. “gonna be late for the team dinner.”
“right.”
iwaizumi has the two of you power-walking down the street, thought it’s more like a light jog for you given your friend’s long, steady strides. you pass a convenience store down the street and you do a double take, stopping to stare at the magazine display in the window.
your boyfriend’s face is plastered on the glossy cover, his argentina uniform fitting him in all the right places. he smiles up at you for the paper, the blurb next to him promising a tell-all interview with juicy details. your eyes lock in on the words “love life” and “latest fling” and you can’t help but frown, stomach flipping slightly.
you know all of it is tabloid fodder, nothing but eye-catching headlines, and you trust and love oikawa with everything in you. still, you can’t deny the jealousy you feel when you see him cozied up with a beautiful, leggy model for a photo shoot. jealous that she gets to be physically present with him and you’re halfway around the world.
you hear iwaizumi urge you to come and you quickly catch up with him, your boyfriend’s blindingly white smile flashing through your mind.
Tumblr media
the beach makes oikawa think of you. when your parents would take you guys there and you’d all run off to the tidepools and gawk at the starfish and crabs inside. when you two buried iwaizumi up to his neck in sand. when he would scoop you up and dunk you in the salty water, despite the shrieking pleas you let out, begging him not to.
oikawa sighs heavily. he leans against the balcony that over looks the seaside, watching the crystalline water ebb and flow. his phone pings on the small, glass-topped table behind him and he picks it up.
a notification lights up his screen: @.officialhinatashoyo mentioned you in a comment: we’re coming for you @.oikawatooru!!
oikawa opens his phone and finds hinata’s comment underneath a photo of japan’s national volleyball team enjoying drinks and food together.
he swipes through the photos, a bunch of group shots with other players (bokuto and hoshiumi are notable making stupid faces in many of them). oikawa stares at the last picture. hinata’s got his arms thrown around your shoulders and he’s clearly said something that has you giggling right at it was taken.
hinata’s tagged you but he also mentions you in the caption, thanking you for taking these pictures and every other photo of them as the official photographer for the team.
oikawa tries to push down the hollowness spreading in his chest, zooming in on your face. you’re glowing — you always are — and he’s happy you’re happy, but there’s the undeniably envious part of him that wishes he was there. making you laugh and smile. maybe sneaking in a kiss or two in between.
he loves playing for argentina; he likes his teammates, the country, and is grateful for how he’s grown, but he’ll never stop missing you when you’re this far away.
Tumblr media
oikawa thinks his thumb moves on its own, dialing your number with practiced ease. he memorized it right after you got your phone, begged his mother to let him get a phone so he could input your contact immediately.
you pick up on the first ring and oikawa can’t hear your very well. he assumes that you’re still out with the team, ears straining. you say, “wait, hold on, tooru.”
he thinks he hears atsumu in the background, “ooh! you’ve got a boyfriend! you’ve got a boyfriend!” and he definitely hears you reply, “this is why you get no bitches, ‘tsumu.”
your voice gets clearer as the background noises fades. “hi, love, you say, and oikawa can’t help but grin at the words.
“hi, baby,” he says. “you picked up quick! you must really like me, huh?”
you chuckle, “something like that. everything okay?”
“yeah, i just wanted to hear your voice.”
“now who’s the one who likes who?” you tease.
his smile only grows. “you know it. i’m obsessed.”
“right back at you, love.” there’s a short lull in the conversation, but it’s not uncomfortable or awkward. it never is with you two.
oikawa’s alarm breaks the silence, the buzzing of the alert sending vibrations through his hand. he frowns. “i’m sorry, baby, i’ve got to get ready for practice.”
“alright. i miss you and love you, tooru. have a good practice. we need you in top form for internationals.”
he laughs. “yeah, you better tell the guys to watch out. especially ushiwaka and tobio.”
“i let them know.”
“i miss you and love you two.”
“we’ll talk later.”
“promise?”
“i promise.”
