I know I reblogged this before but I came back to maybe look thru the tags and replies for some suggestions and the unbridled rage I got upon seeing "you mean rwby? honkai impact? sailor moon? kill la kill? precure? she-ra? my little pony?" NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get that maybe some of these have Women or Girls Who Fight or are Strong and sometimes Diverse...

but fundamentally, None of them do this:

Today wasn't a great day.

Raihan scuffled down the street, his head tucked low in some average grey hoodie he had managed to pull from the depths of his closet. He glanced around the street, checking to make sure he hadn't attracted any attention. He didn't feel like dealing with fans today. He scoffed.

Like he had any left at this point.

He absently fumbled for his rotom phone, unlocking it without a thought as he pulled up his Pokenet feed. Some of his videos and photos were still on the main page, but most of his feed was dominated by his newest brand of torment.

Trainer Reviews.

He grimaced as he quickly flipped by the comments. Trainer Reviews was a new critic channel/blog on the net, dedicated to rating the strongest trainers of all regions based on a set win rate and power. Though skyrocketing in popularity seemingly overnight, the panel of "judges" from TR was known for their sarcastic comments, exposure of conspiracy, witty insults, and harsh critique.

Guess who happened to be their latest victim.

The Pokenet star's fingers stuttered as his gaze skimmed the comments, he could practically feel his mood getting worse with every word.

"Raihan's been Leon's rival for YEARS, and he STILL hasn't beat him. He doesn't seem to be able to beat anyone other than kids."

"lol riahaan trash."

"I challenged him once all he talked about was beating Leon. Like DUDE... I want to do my gym challenge PLZ."

"TR is right, this guy is kinda cringe. Like... get good man. You obvi arent good enough to beat your rival. Win rate trash. Youre bad"

"I used to really like Raihan... he seemed alright. Now, I'm not really so sure."

The dragon trainer forcefully turned off the phone, shoving his hands into his gym shorts. Haters he could take, he's had plenty of those, but it wasn't just that. His channel had plummeted. He was dropping followers by hundreds, tons of other creators were doing spinoff vids or posts practically digging up anything in his life they could to bash him.

Yeah.

Today wasn't a good day.

"Yo! Raihan!"

He let out a harsh sigh. Leon. running towards him with a cup of coffee and a bag of take-out.

He really didn't feel like it today.

He made himself smile, blatantly ignoring the looks around the street as he caught sight of his friend.

"Hey, Leon...what brings you to Hammerlocke?"

The chairman let out a soft laugh, falling into step beside him as he munched on a scone.

"Well, after my initial kidnapping last week, I thought it would be a good idea to stagger my workload a bit. Ya know, get out, see the region I'm working so hard on every day."

Raihan managed a huff of a laugh, rubbing a hand over his neck.

"You really could use it."

Leon gave him a contemplative look, studying him for a moment before turning his attention back to his surroundings.

"I was supposed to meet up with Piers at the Bulbasaur Bistro... But... ah.."

Raihan sighed.

"You got lost again didn't you."

The former champion flashed a sheepish smile, shrugging.

"I get turned around easy. Wanna come?"

"Will you even get there if I don't?"

"Yeah ok, fair."

Raihan slipped into the lead, keeping his head down as he weaved his way to the little cafe. His mind was a million miles away from wanting to interact socially right now, he couldn't even get his mind out of the loop of what if's and should I's.

The little industrial-age-style bistro was one of the lesser-known gems of Hammerlocke, it wasn't on the travel guides and the tourist lists, but all the natives knew this was one of the best spots in the region for chill food and conversation.

Both of which really didn't sound any good at all right now.

Leon stepped up and ordered them both a coffee (WHY did he need another?), paying the barista and making their way to the back of the Edison bulb-lit coffee shop. Piers was sitting at one of the metal tables in the back, casually sipping on a black earl grey and flipping through the latest trainer's magazine. He looked up with a muted smile, tossing his head at them.

"Oi! Ovah 'ere. 'Bout time ya showed up Leo. See ya broughta plus-one eh?"

Leon laughed, settling down in one of the empty seats.

"We bumped into each other while I was wondering around looking for this place. I did snag some scones on the way though."

The rockstar shot the chairman an incredulous look, his electric blue eyes gleaming.

"We've met 'ere for years, mate. 'Ow is it possible ya still cannae find it?"

Leon simply shrugged, munching on one of his scones and peeking over at Piers' magazine. The dark gym leader scooted it over to him, choosing instead to focus in on Raihan.

Great.

He slumped into his seat, pushing his hood down just enough to see both of his friends, but still leaving it up. Piers leaned forward, his bi-colored spiky bangs falling over one eye as he took a long draw from his tea.

"Wha's goin' on in ya 'ead there, mate?"

The Pokenet star pointedly looked away.

"Nothing. I'm fine."

Leon looked up from his paper for a second, before looking back down.

"No phone. Wrong hoodie. He's upset."

Raihon shot him a glare.

Darn it Lee!

Piers simply shook his head.

"I can feel ya dissonant notes from across tha room, ya ain't singin' the same tune ya usually do. What's goin' on whit ya? Somthin' botherin' ya that we need ta talk about?"

Raihan took pride in being able to keep his face up.

He really did.

He kept a level head through Eternatus, he'd kept his spirits up his whole life as he lost time and time again to his best friend. He'd smiled during loss to a kid, he'd never cracked as he saw his entire home almost lost to someone he thought they all could trust. One thing after another, all carefully packed away, eating at the back of his mind until his heart almost burned with it.

And there was no more that could fit.

He growled, pushing himself up and glaring at the Rockstar. He couldn't help the snarl that etched itself across his face.

"I don't want to talk. I'm tired of every nosy trash scraping Slum sticking their noses into my business. I'm fed up trying to deal with all of this, so why don't you just BUTT OUT?!"

It was a low blow. He regretted it the minute he said it; he knew Piers was proud and sensitive about his home, but he couldn't bring himself to CARE. The change in his friend was instant. Piers stood up, his face never changing but his eyes burning with hurt and dark anger. He just stood there, his hands flexing and twitching forward, then stopping. He spun on his heel and left without a word; his silence worse than if he had screamed. In fact, Raihan almost wished he had.

Leon was standing (When did that happen?) His face a mix of confusion and shock.

"Rai... that was..."

"DON'T. Ok? Keep the coffee. I'm going home."

Raihan pulled up his hood again, pushing his way past his remaining friend to make a swift exit the opposite way Piers had left. The anger he had felt from before was quickly being replaced with shame and sadness, but he kept walking. It wasn't like he would make it any better if he went back.

He really was trash wasn't he?

The Pokenet star pulled his hood down as far as he could, feeling the eyes trail him as he made his way back to his castle.

He'd never felt so alone.

What hasn’t already been said: The Spanish Princess 2

Episode 3: GOOD Grief! (we finally have a good episode on our hands)

To all those of you keen enough to have come back for another segment of ‘what hasn’t already been said: TSP’, as opposed to have just been scrolling when you see this - welcome back! (Scrollers you too <3)

To anyone who’s seeing this for the first time: what this is a list of observations, jokes, reactions and criticism which occur to me upon a rewatch. I wait every week until Saturday to do this so that I have had my fill of scrolling through the tag and aggregating what has already been said. I tried doing a whole spoof (here where I gave up 10% in) but tbh a) I don’t know the history well enough b) it’s more time consuming than I thought and c) this series is just not as funny or as crazy as TWQ, so it’s untenable. Having said that: This is not a hatepost. I’m not hatewatching this series and nitpicking on purpose but expressing my honest views and trying to find the good in it as well as the bad.

Without further ado...

First Scenes: 

LMAO the way Wolsey suggests they break their alliance with Spain is freaking hilarious because the actor delivers the lines as if he were a high school girl making a personal attack by suggesting the prom change its theme to 70s disco to the chagrin of the peppy up-and-coming rival.

Also @ Henry VIII looking like the peppy up-and-comer’s bff and shy stan with that pencil bite and small smirk when Catherine loses her cool against Wolsey.

I’m sorry... who is Henry married to again?

Also what is Margaret Pole doing at the council meeting?? I’m not saying I don’t like it.

Attempted Naked Twister:

Oh Catherine, what is with you and all the other STARZ protagonists and that weird politcky bedroom talk? Who actually finds this sexy?

‘Catherine you are unnatural’ ooof that line delivery was somehow haunting.

Was the whole ‘I can’t be rushed you are off-putting with your overpowering’ a callback to Arthur and Catherine? Apparently there’s another writer for this episode so I won’t put all subtly past them. 

Scotland:

Look I’m tired of all this ‘my children won’t be safe’ line getting repeated. Look mate, murder of royal infants and children was not exactly a common occurence, even in cases of deposition. The Princes in the Tower are an exception to this but a very infamous case for that reason. Child murder was extremely taboo. In situations like this with an infant kid, no one is going to bother murdering the babies and taking their thrones, the lords will just vie for power and make themselves de facto rulers and oust the queen. It’s not a question of safety but a question of holding power. Stop giving all women characters perma mummy brains.

Maggie being all caring:

‘Barnaby’ *scoffs* ‘Such an English name’ - OH MAN 0_0 is Catherine mocking them for trying to adapt ? Like I know it’s meant to show her envy for Lina, but it’s coming out all messed up.

Our girl Maggie’s smile screams I’m beating your ass in chess.

Anyhow this is the least histrionic we’ve seen Catherine so far.

Chaplain vs Catherine:

I’m interested how Catherine will feel at Stafford’s execution given that I have noticed this show build up to a friendship between them.

Why is everyone laughing at the whole ‘will you delight us with new schemes’ line was not that funny?

LMAO at Thomas Boleyn’s attempted brown-nosing. 

You know what? Ruairi is a decent actor. When he says ‘so you admit it? you lost the child because you tried to be a man?” the actor conveys Henry’s troubled mind, lowkey scare towards Catherine and bewilderment all in one. The way his eyes do not move but just widen emotionlessly also gives this sense that he is being manipulated (which I guess they are going for with Wolsey). Then the whole choir music in the background.. I don’t know.. I’m liking this, it’s creating a vibe of a king of haunted and increasingly paranoid Henry. I’m sure they are going for that, so good.

Ursula Pole and Mama:

Maggie Pole say ‘riches don’t keep you safe’ with tears in her eyes :’(. Please tell me how this is not her thinking on her parents and granddad Warwick and what befell them ;’(.

I find Ursula refreshing actually, don’t get those types of heroines often. But they are making her similar to a gold-digger, an exhalted marriage was first and foremost considered a thing of honour. Noblepeople wouldn’t speak in such mercenary terms regarding their marriages. 

Post Mary Defiance:

I love the ‘horse’ nickname from Brandon n’awwww

Also just realised what made TWQ so atmospheric - that wierd ‘oooo’ sound effect in the background when a character was being paranoid or worrying. They are using it during Henry’s ‘How is it that I have no sons?’ and it is just... so effective.

Catherine calling them ordinary children... she just keeps striking me as more and more classist. Like ok, I know every royal was... but still, I thought she was meant to see Lina as a friend and equal despite her race and status. To add the race element, this kind of rubs me the wrong way.

Also it is so clear by the end when Catherine states how the king is upset with her, she expects Maggie to ask her about it.. but she doesn’t lmao.

Back to Scotland until Sexy boy fencing:

I love me this soft boi. Angus <3 <3

I like how they address that some men don’t really like killing and that violence isn’t inherent in a man’s nature.

Oh man, are we supposed to look at Lina’s house and deplore the impoverished conditions? It would go for at least 3,000,000 pounds in today’s property market?

Is Catherine being particularly classist again with ‘Why u not becoming a butcher Wolsey, ey?’. 

Though I will admit the ‘but giving meat to the poor is also good’ was one of her only smart comebacks.

Just realised, Catherine’s pink dress pretty as it is, looks straight out of the 1570s... why?

Montage and After:

You guys are right, there is this weird longing between Henry and Wolsey lmao. It is actually insane.

So basically Catherine is officially depressed

OOOFF we have Stafford as regent instead of Catherine. (edit: I suppose it’s cause they go to France which they didn’t historically? Also if Stafford is at home then what is his son later doing in France, why would he be there without his father. This show didn’t think this through)

Meg Singing:

An impassionate speech is not too anachronistic. But despite the title of this post (what hasn’t been said) I will reiterate that 16th century and Medieval people’s problem wasn’t that they were ashamed of their grief and didn’t cry. In fact, crying was somewhat more socially acceptable then than it even is now! Even manly men like Arthur were written as crying in literature such as Malory’s Morte d’Arthur. Obviously you couldn’t go overboard, but in truth crying was indeed often too performative rather than hidden too much behind doors.

Pole and More UWUWU in France and after:

I LIKE THIS INTELLECTUAL FLIRTING

It’s nice to see a depiction of romantic feelings between mature and level-headed subjects.

God Mary Tudor is so beautiful in this scene jesus. and the music when she was being presented was also very beautiful.

Maggie Pole getting given ‘a modest income’ yeah... she was one of the wealthiest peers of her day.

Also Maggie’s lady cousin not lady aunt Frost!

William Compton cracks the hell out of me. I love this guy. He is just so creepy and twisted yet super keen and friendly. ahaha He looks like a riot, I hope we see him more. lmao tiles.

Also this palace feels very anachronistic almost 18th century-ish.

I like the Louis and Mary sequence, it’s nice seeing him trying to make her feel less scared, but OMFG when he lay on that chair.. for one second I thought they were trying to kill him off already.

Scotland: ‘Love is an open doooooorrrrr’ + Last Scene:

I ship Meg and Douglas ahhhh this soft boi x strong woman match is everything Henry and Catherine could have been.

I wonder... why is Lina speaking in Spanish more than Catherine. hmmm Are they trying to foreshadow Lina’s eventual return home and how Catherine become a true englishwoman?

Conclusion:

7.5/10

I cannot in all fairness believe it. This was actually decent. I’ve given up on historical accuracy long ago so by this point I’m focusing more on how it stands as as drama. I mean, TWQ was also a flop when it came to grasping the complex issues of that era but why do I feel compelled to rewatch it every year? Because it had atmosphere when it came to acting, music, certain aesthetics (though the costumes let me down often). It felt adequately gothic and dark, yet bright and jewel-lish when it had to be, sometimes both at the same time. Some one-liners were also memorable etc...

So far TSP 2 did not have any of this. Everything felt way too off and anachronistic. But not even consistently anachronistic. The music was also often very meh (though I just noted the absence of the spanish stringy theme that kept playing in season 1 - I guess I understand why), the dialogue very clichéd (‘alright lads let’s throw in the words: king, crown, power, fight, battle + other buzzwords and we have ourselves Shakespeare’) and so on... but I saw a change in this episode and I couldn’t initially point out what it was.

Upon rewatch, I identified some of the improvements (noted above) but above all: The producer was different! Boy does it show. Unfortunately, I think she is only for this one episode which really sucks. Come back! There is more chemistry between the couples, less predictable interactions, pervy Compton, cinnamonroll Douglas, better music, more scenic shots (e.g Douglas and Margaret in church) e.t.c. I hope it will match the rest of the STARZ productions in getting better towards the end.

Look it’s no masterpiece. But I’ll give credit where it’s due because at least this time it didn’t leave me feeling wanting and unsatisfied (if that makes sense).

Just a thought..... **There are spoilers in case anyone’s still watchin’ out......

I have seen probably hundreds of theories floating around tumblr about MLB and season 3 and I just thought that I would throw in my own :) So, ok....

- Chloe......not gonna lie, I'm not surprised. I agree with those that say that she did good things for praise, attention and bragging rights. I do think that it was an attempt to continue being Queen Bee even though she was well aware that literally EVERYONE in Paris knew her identity, she obviously didn't care. She just wanted the fame. Could she still be redeemed? Sure, but...she's still got a long way to go and plenty of work to do, with that being said, the question is......is she willing to do the work even with the bee miraculous and the idolization of ladybug taken out of the equation? That idk, we'll see I guess.

- Fu......alright so......he's gone...... :'( Marinette is the guardian now, not that she's ready for it Lord knows lol but it is what it is at this point unfortunately. The thing with Fu is.....he would always preach about how LB and CN's identities need to be a secret when.....his girlfriend or whoever she is (I can't remember her name) knew he was the guardian, even offered for them both to use a miraculous in some flashback in an episode (that I also can't remember the name of, I think it was origins but idk) to escape danger and protect the miracle box. SO IF SHE CAN KNOW OF ALL PEOPLE, seemingly not being a miraculous holder herself, WHY THE HELL can't LB and CN know!? Kinda hypocritical tbh. Anyways, now that LB is the guardian, there is literally no one stopping her from saying I'm the guardian so I make the rules now but her being as honorable as she is, she still refuses. It would just be too easy I guess if LB came to the same conclusion as the fandom and said, "We knew Fu's identity for the sake of protecting him, and he knew ours in case of emergency (as displayed in Feast).....so then it would only make sense if we knew each others identity." And I'm not sure if they knew that Fu's girlfriend knew but....that just adds to my point, which is there really isn't a reason for them not to know, but like I said I guess it would be too easy that way. Maybe now that the temple is back along with the monks.....maybe they will be the ones standing in the way of the reveal, assuming all the other monks didn’t like what Fu did regarding people knowing their identity (his girlfriend) and are far more strict with the rules. Again, we'll see I guess.

- Alllllright.....*sigh*......Lovesquare/ Drama BS. OK so, look. This whole theory on Marinette moving on from Adrien and Chat Noir moving on from Ladybug.....in MY opinion.....it's BS. THREE SEASONS of you're the girl of my dreams and Mari's intense crush on Adrien, which even though she has gotten better when it comes to communicating and being around him, her crush is pretty extreme. HOWEVER, people seem to forget that when you're 14 or 15, a crush can easily get out of control because....well, hormones....like let's be real, yes it's intense AF but is it far fetched for a typical girl her age? NO, like come on ya'll, really? I feel like that's not really taken into consideration she's still young therefore still immature, and understandably so. Same thing goes for Adrien when it comes to Ladybug. He is obsessed too, maybe not to the same degree as Mari but still, pretty damn obsessed. And between Adrien and Marinette, things started out hella awkward in season 1, but compared to season 3, she HAS grown. THEY have grown. Closer and closer over the course of 3 seasons. Them and Ladynoir too so, obviously they're on the right track. Do they need to grow as individuals? HELL YES ok, that I agree with. Mari and Adrien need ME TIME though. I personally do not believe that they need someone else to come into their lives just to be used as means to get over someone else THAT WE ALL KNOW TOO WELL they aren’t gonna do. Like it has been said that in season 4, it will be decided who wins the Lukanette v. Adrinette war......and in order to continue with the whole made for each other/ soulmate plot, and in order to carry over to the movie (that supposed to be about Ladynoir and their love, it seems) I think between season 4 and 5, Lukanette will lose, (Sorry to all the shippers, no salt intended in this post). I also noticed that it was not mentioned that there will be a decided winner for ship war Adrigami v. Adrinette, at least not that I've heard nor seen, like the other rival ships. That leads me to believe that IF Adrigami happens at all dating wise, they're not gonna last very long at all, or at least not compared to Lukanette IF that happens either. Again no salt intended. In the movie previews that have been released, especially the song, it shows that Chat Noir/ Adrien is still pretty heavily in love with Ladybug. And Ladybug seems just as in love with Chat. Note how Chat/ Adrien says his heart is in a duel, meaning his heart is torn between Marinette and Ladybug, but Ladybug on the other hand, only really talks of patience rather than being torn like Chat which makes me think.....in the movie, DOES SHE KNOW?  Talking about eternal love.....without taking into consideration season 4 since obviously it won't start until next fall, I can only assume as of right now that those feelings of eternal love or whatever are pretty extreme to be feelings for Chat Noir alone. It would make sense to feel so intensely if she were to know that CN and Adrien (whom she would both equally love at that point) were the same person. That would make sense to me. Now, when it comes to the ice cream situation in miracle queen, I like to think, like a few others I have seen post on here, that it's referring to themselves as individuals....because like Pink and Blue for Mari makes sense......Green and Yellow for Adrien also makes sense.....(side note: how the hell does orange tie to Kagami, like why not strawberry or cherry?? Idk but ok......? Whatever). Anyways, that's how I see it. I may not be a big fan of Kagami (I personally don't get the appeal, but that's JUST ME) but she deserves better than being a plot device. Same thing goes for Luka, which he's ok in my opinion. Like, Kagami and Adrien have a bond that is irreplaceable as in they were both raised in similar circumstances, and when it comes to Adrien overcoming the consequences/ obstacles that come with that? That friendship is necessary. But I think that the both of them, ESPECIALLY Adrien, don't really know the differences between friendly love and romantic love, same for Luka and Mari....ok, well maybe not Luka but Mari? Yeah. Luka and Kagami deserve to have someone who loves them and only them, just like everybody else. It isn't fair to them that they be in relationships with people we all know that they want to be with, and for however long they may last, only be for the other person to come to a conclusion that they love someone else......so really in all honesty, it all seems so needless, unnecessary, and completely f'd up. I have heard people say that Marinette and Adrien need other people to move on, saying it's healthy but I for one have a hard time agreeing with that. How are you supposed to love someone else when you can't even BEGIN to learn to love yourself and put yourself first? I think that if they both came to the healthy and mature conclusion that they need to time to themselves, and put their mental and emotional needs first for a change, that it will open so many new doors for the both of them. Mari will embrace Luka's friendship and he will inspire and encourage the creative side of her and his calm/ chill demeanor will help her with her anxiety and she will gracefully come into her own and FINALLY OWN HER BEAUTIFUL SH**!!! As for Adrien, he will be more decisive and sure of himself. He will have a better understanding of what he wants thanks to Kagami who, I think, will guide him in that department. She'll help him be not so wishy-washy and encourage him to advocate for himself when Gabriel "Trash" Agreste does SOMETHING ELSE unjust or unfair to Adrien as means to micro-manage his life. And with that he will hopefully have less stress due to his hovering father and maybe loosen up and relax, showing his dorky/ funny/ CN side while Mari becomes more confident/ brave like LB. And let me say that maybe Adrien can help Kagami grow in return, I think we can all agree that she could benefit from better, friendlier social skills and also help her learn that you don't always win/ you aren't always #1, that's not how life works. Ok, now as for the lucky charm bracelets, the theories that have been spread around on tumblr speak for themselves, for instance the ice cream matching each others charms and the thing with the red string in which, I agree with all of those. 

- To sum up, Adrien and Marinette have some serious sh** to figure out. Especially with themselves. I would love to see them interact more on a real level which will lead to Adrien no longer being able to deny that he see's her as more than a friend. I wan't them to be so close because with shi** getting crazier around them, they need each other, with AND without the mask so that makes me think that the reveal will happen sooner rather than later. I want them to rely on each other more and more, as Adrinette and Ladynoir, and they have INDEED SHOWN that they can be a bada** power couple while knowing each others identities and COMPLETELY loving and trusting each other with NO wall and NO secrets holding them back. And yes, in all fairness, Lukanette, Adrigami & Ladynoir were all suggested in the (not my) finale, however all those ships cannot canonically stand. **deep, creepy narrator voice** Only one will survive (lol sry). I personally feel that season 4 can play out either way, either with them seeing other people or not, but in my opinion, them seeing other people would be sacrificing realism (because no one gets over not only their crush, but likely their first love, in the span of like a day or so...like c’mon) for dramatic purposes which in all fairness, would not be surprising to me at all but still. Either way, it will eventually lead to a reveal which I think is likely to happen in the movie rather than season 4, I think season 4 will be about Adrinette/ Ladynoir like usual but  strengthening emotionally and mentally with aid from Luka and Kagami (and if it happens my way, it would put them both in a more favorable position than just mere plot devices but hey, what do I know). This will likely lead to Marichat being primary ship in season 4 due to Adrien having a chance to fall in love with Marinette and not just LB, and Marinette falling in love with Chat and not just Adrien. Keep in mind that during this, Marinette's love for Adrien won't be gone while she falls for Chat, and likewise with Adrien, coming to love both LB and Marinette.  Leaving both of them conflicted, blushing messes in every corner in the love square LMAO IMAGINE THE MESS THEY’LL BE!!!!  NOW THAT'S THE DRAMA I LIVE FOR LOL and Lord knows Astruc is all about that drama ya'll LOL Maybe that’s the plot of the movie? The lovesquare imploding? LOL Sounds a perfect way to end the 3 season long drama if you ask me......

Todoroki vs Bakugou and Midoriya

Not a shipping post.

Let's talk about Todoroki and the way he relates to people. Specifically, to Midoriya and Bakugou. I think it's safe to say that the three of them are, at this point in the story, the Main Three. They're arguably the strongest boy in class 1-A. They're also, as I mentioned briefly before foils for each other. So how do they relate?

Where Midoriya strikes up an easy friendship with Iida and Ururaka from the start, and Bakugou seems to become bro's with Kirishima fairly early on, Todoroki is… slow to warm up to people. The kid has spent his childhood isolated, so that's easy to understand. If you want to go symbolic, you could also say that his fire side, and how he uses it, quite literally makes him warm up to people. Getting to grips with that side of himself is a major part of his character development, and as he becomes more attuned to his own personality, it makes sense that he'd become more comfortable with other people as well.

 Sports Festival

Let's start at de sports festival, because we get some very nice development for all three of them.

 Todoroki vs Midoriya

Todoroki singles Midoriya out fairly early on, when he does that whole 'declaration of war' thing. At this point, I don't think he does this purely based on merit? The kid he's 'going to beat' barely made it into UA, he's nowhere near the top of the class but Todoroki can recognize a quality seedling when he sees one. He watched Midoriya's fight with Bakugou in the Heroes & Villains exercise, he watched Midoriya jump in during the villain invasion. And what he recognized there was that out of all of his classmates, Midoriya is the one most like All Might. He even says this, at some point.

And while it's played off as a joke, with him assuming he's All Might's illegitimate son, he's not… that far off, really? Either way, it's this link that draws him to Midoriya. Todoroki, you see, is an All Might fanboy. (they literally all are) He may have been 'created' as an Endeavour 2.0, to BEAT All Might, but in those moments with his mom, what he truly wanted was to be LIKE All Might. He wants to be that kind of hero. All Might himself mentions that the both of them had the same sort of vibe. Among his peers, Midoriya is the closest to All Might 2.0, in type of power, in general disposition and in the sense that they're literally pretty close. It makes sense that Todoroki would see him as 'the one to beat'.

Incidentally, this insight also makes Todoroki more likely to actually listen to Midoriya. At this point, the kid is very dismissive of others. It could be Kirishima telling him not to start fights, Bakugou coming to yell at him or even villains trying to murder All Might.

Todoroki kind of just swipes them aside as a 'nuisance'. However, when Midoriya talks, he listens.

Maybe it's the All Might thing, maybe it's because the kid has a power that Todoroki is instinctively afraid of. Or maybe, it's because he knows that Midoriya is completely insane. This is a student who is willing to injure himself to negate attacks. He's willing to literally break his body to save people or win at things. He will literally do anything to come out on top. To Todoroki this must look even weirder than to us, viewers. Self-discipline, control, stoicism is his whole deal. He acts logically, and Midoriya is like the opposite of that, in a fight. When the kid that just broke all his fingers starts yelling at him, he will damn well pay attention. And when Midoriya, in his duel with Todoroki, says 'Where are you looking', he wants Todoroki to stop thinking of his dad and actually keep his head in the fight.

It works, too. For once, Todoroki goes full out, and he later admits to his father that the reason he did so, was because he completely forgot about him. He let his instinct take over. Like he did in the cavalry battle. He's so impressed with Midoriya's innate strength that he can't help but go all out.

 Todoroki vs Bakugou

If Midoriya is the classmate most resembling All Might, then in Todoroki's eyes Bakugou must be the one most resembling Endeavour. Certainly during the sports festival. He's brash. He's so very full of himself, even his destructive power is similar to Endeavour's flames. At this point Bakugou is also way more about being 'number one' and winning than about saving people. As such, Todoroki has a very different rivalry with Bakugou than he has with Midoriya. Bakugou isn't 'special' in the eyes of Todoroki.Not like Midoriya is.

Look at that kid. Todoroki just told Midoriya he wanted to beat him. He told Midoriya, not Bakugou, first place student in the entry exam, that he sees him as his main rival. And that Pisses Bakugou Off. Because in Bakugou's world, he's the best. Certainly at this point in the story. And Todoroki just.…refuses to acknowledge him. You see this again and again.

The kid, admittedly, has an awful lot to deal with at this point. He's very much trying to find himself, preferably in the ten minutes before the next fight. So he's back to dismissing anyone. Including Bakugou. Fun fact: it's really hard to dismiss of Bakugou.

When Bakugou says 'Where are you looking', he wants the kid to pay attention to him. But of course, that just reminds Todoroki of Deku, and that is incidentally the worst thing you could say to Bakugou.

I think it's safe to say that these two just really don't click. Bakugou is a blip on Todoroki's radar, and that really, really frustrates him, because all he wants is to beat Todoroki in a fair fight. The way Midoriya received a fair fight.

It's interesting to note that even in this fight, Todoroki only uses his flame side when Midoriya yells at him from the stands. Midoriya is literally the fan to his flame. But this time it doesn't work.

So what made him extinguish those flames near the end? It could be a lot of things. Todoroki is still in turmoil. He told his father he needed to think about things, and he hasn't exactly had a lot of time to process in between the two fights. It would be highly unrealistic if one shouting session miraculously healed all Todoroki's ingrained trauma. You see him get a little flashback to his mom and dad right before his flames go out, which very much indicates that he's just really struggling. There's also the very nature of Bakugou. When he fights him, all Todoroki sees is flames and smoke. All he hears is boasting.  It feels very different. The link to his father is much stronger. Though both Bakugou and Midoriya want the same thing, to fight him at full power, Todoroki can only feel the need to do so when fighting Midoriya.

It's not really Bakugou's fault, but it just servers to frustrate him more.

So how does it evolve from here on out? The training camp arc is one of those first times we see Todoroki in his newer, softer form, though change is still slow.

This is also about the time  Midoriya and Todoroki seem to have reached some kind of understanding. He even gives him some of the most symbolic advise I've read in this series.

Considering their background, this is really beautiful. Todoroki is telling him how to deal with Kouta, but it harkens back to their fight, and also to Todoroki's past. If anyone can understand how Kouta feels, it's Todoroki, after all. Endeavour may have told him what to do and how to behave all his life, that didn't make him want to do it. He simply didn't believe it, because Endeavour didn't really act like a hero (or even a decent human being) to his family. All Might is Todoroki's only real idol. He's the reason he wants to be a hero, because he's always saving people. In a way, he’s telling Midoriya that the only reason he understood him during their duel, was because Midoriya was willing to get brutally murdered (ok almost) in order to save him.

But I digress. Basically, over the course of the next few arcs, Todoroki sort of softens towards several of his classmates, including Midoriya. It's pretty funny that once he stops isolating himself and actually notices the people around him, he's a pretty sensitive guy. He is the first to notice that Midoriya's affected by the stuff happening in his internship, for instance.

He's also the one to offer comfort here.

His relationship with Bakugou, meanwhile, hasn't changed much, given the kid's reaction to drawing him as a partner in the test of courage.

I actually really like these two in this arc, because what they do half the time is squabble and it's funny.

I would almost call it a friendly rivalry? Sort of thing? It's obvious they don't particularly like each other personally. But they also don't hate each other. Not really. They may have gained a certain level of respect for each other, even. They're perfectly capable of working together, if need be.

A scene like that, where they work together to take down Tokoyami’s berserk shadow, requires a level of understanding and communication that I don't see happening between Midoriya and Bakugou, for instance. Not any time soon, at least. We also learn in the provisional license exam that if Todoroki really hates a guy, he has trouble cooperating with him. We see none of that here. They are willing to acknowledge each other. Todoroki cares enough to be one of the first to decide on rescuing Bakugou. This doesn't mean they stop squabbling though.

All this time together for the provisional license course, and the only one that has grown a little is Todoroki. Please note the use of 'we' here. But his banter with Bakugou isn’t that different from his talks with others in his class. He's slowly opening up to his classmates and, true, Bakugou is one of them. He's not dismissing him anymore. In a way, Bakugou is just one of his classmates now, just like all the others. Which probably just pisses him off, tbh.

Yuri on Ice fanfic reclist

Water's Edge by Mhalachai For years, Yuuri had heard people say Viktor’s skating was otherworldly. He never thought they were being literal.

Did you watch Yuri on Ice and think “well this sports show is cute but what it really needs is some supernatural horror all up in there”, if not then you need to think again because this fic is fantastic. Yuuri’s characterization is really great and serves the really ground the story as weird stuff starts happening! I came for what I thought was monster!Viktor fic and stayed for the suspenseful writing and the gorgeous atmosphere.  

a day for all the rest by Etharei Phichit clears his throat. "You, ah, might want to wear your scarf again." He taps meaningfully at his own collarbone. Victor touches the indicated spot on his neck. The skin is markedly sensitive. He presses down, unable to help himself, and the sweet little ache summons a sense-memory: strong fingers carding through his hair, then digging into his shoulder, powerful thighs like a vice around his hips, his name gasped into his ear before a hot mouth seals over the skin of his neck.

The day after the Cup of China.

A post Cup of China fic, but notably from Victor’s POV, and it’s a great character study, but what I enjoy even more is just the natural interaction between all the skaters. While Victor and his relationship with Yuuri is the focus, it never feels all consuming and their relationships with their friends and family are also in forefront and treated as an important thematic point, and that is something I’m always happy to see in fic.

This is a crack prompt taken seriously in the best way possible. After the first couple of laughs at the situation you find yourself seriously feeling for young Victor. Mostly it follows a younger Victor trying to figure out why he ended up with Yuuri and his slow discovery is just so satisfying in a way I can’t quite articulate. Also Victor and Yuri strike up a friendship that is just absolutely wonderful, and so in character for both of them.

Hatred and love are two sides of the same coin and even though everything changes, some things are still meant to be.

So I put off reading this fic for a while because Yuuri and Viktor being at odds with each other just doesn’t do much for me, I am just so in love with their canon relationship of support and affection. But guys. This is so engagingly written and I’m utter Yuuri self-loathing trash and that is this fic. I have to give it serious credit with how much of it leans on the ultimate unreliable narrator Yuuri that just makes you unable to look away from the utter trainwreck that is him. So, please come into the pit with me and have something to wait every week for with baited breath. This writer’s weekly updating schedule and friendly interactions with their readers give me life!

Masquerade by Ashida “Just say the word.” came the whisper as Victor stepped close, behind them Yuuri was aware of guns out and at the ready, of confused men and questioned loyalties, here Victor was offering, and Yuuri was too selfish to say no. 

“Ok.” Yuuri smiled as this game of masquerade came to an end, what would happen now, he didn’t know, he would probably die, his family would come after him and try to put a knife in his back or a bullet between his eyes, none of it mattered, because together they would fight, and the rest of the world would finally burn.

So there have been a fair number of mob/criminal aus and mostly they don’t do much for me, but wow this fic. Despite the setting it still manages to incorporate the idea of Yuuri and Victor against the world, in a way that feels emotionally true to the source material even if the actual plot is very different. Also Yuuri and Victor are just so, so in love and it’s just so satisfying to read as they finally make the decision that they care about each other more than anything else, and ugh. Also this Victor is just insane in a good way that feels very close to canon. The second chapter ends on a cliffhanger and I’m not sure if the author ever means to update, but I will wait forever in hope! (but the first chapter works great as a standalone too)
