Cinnamon Girl - Lana Del Rey
I used to think that "There's things I wanna say to you but I'll just let you live" only meant "I want to say negative things to you but I'll just let it go" But it also means, "There are positive things I want to tell you, but I'll let you find out on your own." And one can never truly be held without being hurt by the arms that hold them, whether physically, mentally, spiritually....because no one is perfect in any way. Not a single soul. Okeh? It is so.

This is the Okeh Laughing Record, an American 1922 dupe of a German 1920 recording. It did the rounds on tumblr a while back (original poster in 2012, 2018 by the time it reached me), though it wasn’t actually stated at the time what it was, and I love this record so much. Most of the comments were about how creepy it is, but I found it delightful. Still find it delightful.
I’ve had those hysterics, where everybody’s primed and something random happens and before you know it everyone’s falling over. We had a Christmas dinner one year, bacon, and I remember putting some brown sauce on my plate from a squirt bottle, and the bottle made a farting sort of noise, and abruptly the entire dinner table was in complete hysterics and we couldn’t extricate ourselves for a solid five minutes or so. That’s what this record is. I don’t know if it was recorded on purpose, or if they’d genuinely booked the recording studio for the music he starts playing, and then the random bout of hysterics mucked it up, but they’d already paid for the session, so why not record it anyway? But it’s hilarious and familiar and I’ve been there, and it’s amazing that these people literally a hundred years ago had the exact same experience, but happened to record it. And/or knew of the exact same experience and set out to record it.
One thing that fascinates me, there is apparently some debate as to whether the male laughter and the instrument player are the same person or two different people. I have to say that they really sound the same to me. Every time, just before he starts audibly laughing, the cornet player starts sporfing and sputtering where he’s laughing into his instrument, so to me it sounds like he just pulls his instrument away from his mouth and laughs normally when he gets too overcome, before attempting to play again a while later and failing again just as quickly. They could be two different people, but the instrument splutters every time just before he starts laughing, so I really think they’re the same person.
