I want to give a recommendation of one of my favorite shoujo manga by Yuu Watase is Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden. It has 40 chapters and has adventure, romance, fantasy, drama, and tragedy. This is the synopsis from myanimelist

Takiko Okuda is a strong-willed girl living in the Taisho Era. She needs to be strong -- Oosugi, the one man she's ever loved, is a married man; her mother is terminally ill; and her father, Einosuke, has not been home in over a year. When at last Einosuke returns, it's with a notebook full of Chinese scribblings that seem more important to him than the death of his wife. Furious, Takiko steals away his completed translation -- "The Universe of the Four Gods" -- with the intention of tearing it to shreds, but the instant she opens it, she's surrounded by light... And it is said that this is how the legend of the Priestess of Genbu began.

I've watched Ayashi no Ceres by Yuu Watase but not Fushigi Yuugi yet. Would you recommend the anime? I usually prefer anime over manga.

Off the top of my head:

Takiko Okuda and Rimudo Roun

Not an anime, but a manga - Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden. I love how these two grow together in the manga - they are both intense, wounded, prickly people and their relationship never overwhelmed the plot and drove both of their growth. Oooh, also, I wrote about Takiko's gaze in the manga here.

Ginta and Arimi

Fake dating to real feelings trope! I just have such a soft spot for their scenes because (in the manga, I haven't watched Marmalade Boy anime) - their scenes together were pleasant and surprised me writing wise. I liked it so much - I wrote about it here.

Makino Tsukushi and Doumyoji Tsukasa

This manga is utterly ridiculous, drama dialled up to a 11. There are many things I can't take seriously about the manga but I couldn't help adore and root for Tsukushi, a poor girl enrolled in a rich school, where she challenges the rich bully. And he falls in love with her - I like that she takes considerable amount of time to fall in love with him and even then, would hate to admit to herself (lot of people found this frustrating, but given how brutally bullying was depicted in the beginning, it works for me). That said, 90s manga rife with issues. But from here, I really like this sex positive storyline for one of the side characters - it handled with extreme maturity for its time (to the point adaptations can't handle the ambiguity of it and just change it up).

Not a couple, but i also ship Spike and Faye from Cowboy Bebop.

WIP of Fushigi Yuugi Chibis features the 4 Gods, 28 Seishi, and 4 Miko. I used my own headcanons for the 4 yet-to-be-revealed Byakko: Toroki: a really buff gentle giant, communicates with animals. Mark on left buttcheek. Amefuri: a blind holy man, power of invisibility. Mark on right shin. Kokie: a young circus acrobat, rubber powers. Mark on tongue. Karasuki: a static man with a hard body, mostly magnetic powers with some metal. Mark on navel.

Desire

Too often in shoujo mangas, a heroine's sexual desire for their romantic interest is portrayed as "I dont care what you do to me,if it's you" - which is a very passive participation of any sort of interlude. ( It is also conditioning and looking at our own bodies through male gaze and vehicles for male pleasure - something that is treated, even subtly, as something a heroine gives to the romantic interest. I am not saying that doesn't occur in real life and that I don't know women and men who treat their sexual dynamics similarly. It does).

Therefore, I really appreciated when Watase alluded to Takiko'a desire for Rimudo in Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden like this - right when she is in the arms of another man and feels bodily that it is wrong.

Scent, to me, is very explicitly alluding to her sexual desire for him. And it comes from her own agency, and what her own body wants and not ascribing to what romantic leads want out of her or having her body be the passive vehicle. She is as much a participant who feels and wants.

Takiko and Rimudo have an intensely romantic and emotional relationship. But it's moments like this that Watase displays strong mutual sexual attraction that is present between the couple.
