Enrichment
Takes place in @tinydefector Merformers AU either as a side story or separate continuity! Thank you for the inspiration!
The scent of salty brine filled the air as it was just another quiet day at the marine centre. With few eyes to observe the Oceanides at the center, be it for research or recreationally, a pair of blue eyes decided to take up the mantel as Rung observed the few humans that were wandering around, finding their interactions quite assuming as he liked to compare how similar their behaviors were to Oceanides. He liked watching people and would sometimes try to mimic some of their mannerisms such as a hand wave or a grin though these have been met with mixed results or confusion from the caretakers feeding or observing him. He knew from experience furrowed brows weren’t a good sign but he was still trying to learn how to at least communicate back in a way they could understand.
With Rung being an older Mer, he would stay back more at the center, balancing the solace he got in his alcove with hunting and interacting with his pod. Though he didn’t seem like the most active member, he did show a habit of decorating his area with an odd array of trinkets, some assumed to be from previous hunts such as large and unknown bones or manmade items like used car parts or toys that were either lost or dumped into the ocean. The marine centre has tried to remove or replace the pollutants but Rung has been rather shown to have an attachment towards these items. To counteract this, you were instructed to work on finding other items for him to collect and display that were found in his natural environment.
It was enrichment, or so that’s what Dr. Quin called it and for an Oceanides so old, it was a good way to keep his skills sharp and to give him exercise while staying around the area. When Rung went out hunting with his pod, you would dive in and scatter these trinkets for him to find. You’ve even buried or hid a few to see if he could find them and problem solving how to get them out. Rung seems excited to find new treasures for his trove, chirping and showing you when he found one before going back for more.
This arrangement has been your personal project for months as others focused more on the lone baby and the next generation of Oceanides. So far you’ve found success with shells, bones, coral, and oddly shaped rocks but it seemed as of recent, he was struggling to find items that were near him or even in plain sight, feeling around until he eventually found the object in question. In light of this new problem, you’ve been taking the day to observe him, wondering what you could do to help his decline in his quality of life here.
It seemed the answer was closer than you speculated as while adjusting some rocks around Rung’s sleeping area, a small splash caught his attention as he saw a strange piece of plastic flutter down, swimming over cautiously as the object hit the sandy floor with a poof. Once the sand settled, he noticed the item was an odd contraption he noticed some humans wore on their faces, perhaps to assist with their vision or to distinguish one from another.
Carefully, Rung picked up the glasses and out of curiosity, placed them on his face. It took a few tries as the sides of the frame poked at his gills but eventually, he was able to place them comfortably on his face. Looking through the clear glass, it became very apparent to him that the theory this device helped with vision was correct as he looked around, seeming the lagoon around him in better detail.
The stones and shells that lined the sand became more defined and he was able to notice more of the colorful details the small fish that fluttered in and out displayed. With this realization, Rung started to happily swim around and look around the lagoon with a new, clearer perspective.
~~
Meanwhile, you were helping an intern at the marine centre pick up some papers as she bumped into you, barely able to see over their own papers. The fledgling intern, Donna, squinted hard as she tried to find all the notes that had scattered in the collision.
“Is something wrong?” You asked as she seemed to be panicked, scrambling to find something more important than her notes.
“I- I can’t find my glasses,” Donna muttered as she tried her best to find them, her searching more erratic before she turned towards the open water, fear clear on her face, “I think- I think they might have fallen in when I bumped into you.”
You gave her a pat on the shoulder in an attempt to reassure her there was nothing to worry about. “It’ll be fine, we can get them back, Shrimp’s easy going and won’t mind if we pop in to retrieve them.”
With that, you leaned over the railing briefly, trying to get a hint of where Shrimp was before noting the flash of orange and white darting the water below, deciding to call out to him to see if he would respond or if he was in distress.
“Shrimp!” With the call of his name, Rung poked his head out of the water, his blue eyes appearing much larger due to the glasses he was wearing. A small chuckle escaped your lips as you called him over, finding the image quite humorous.
“It seems Shrimp decided to try on your glasses,” you commented to Donna before leaning down closer to Rung’e eye level, a bittersweet smile on their face as you held out your hand. “I’m sorry I have to ask but I need those glasses back.”
Rung dipped his head mostly in the water at this request, not wanting to lose this tool that he was just starting to enjoy. A rumble of his gills caused the water to ripple out around him as he pouted in disapproval.
“Look, I’ll ask Quin if we can find you another pair but Donna needs those back so she can see,” you asked him, the Mer still not relenting as a burb of bubbles left his mouth as if sighing.
“I promise I’ll get you another pair, you have my word.” A few moments later, he conceded, handing the glasses back before retreating under the water before you could thank him, obviously sad about returning the glasses but seemingly understood that Donna needed them back.
Returning the glasses, Donna thanked you before scurrying away, your focus returning to the lagoon for a brief moment before returning back to the facility proper.
~~
“You’re requesting glasses, is that correct?” Dr. Quin attempted to clarify as she looked at your request for numerous pairs of waterproof glasses. The request was odd, to say the least, but she wanted to hear you out first before making her decision.
“Yes,” you stated before explaining yourself, “Earlier today, Donna’s glasses ended up near Shrimp in the lagoon and looking the video feed from that time, it seemed he not only enjoy playing with them but benefited from wearing them. He was swimming around excitedly and interacting like he could fully see his environment! I think giving him the option to choose and wear some would help him greatly… and I did promise him I would give him another pair to wear.”
You rubbed your arm nervously, knowing it was a long shot, but seeing at least one Mer so happy, especially with priorities being with the future generations of Oceanides, it made you feel like you could at least help one in the long run, a minor victory on the road ahead.
“Then we better find him a pair that works,” Dr. Quin stated as she signed her name for approval, a hum in her voice before being cut off by a hug and thank you from you, a pat on the back signaling you to lighten up on the embrace, “And besides, I don’t want you to break a promise.”
Excited, you thanked her once more before starting the process of finding glasses that might fit an Oceanides more comfortably.
~~
Rung poked at the sand that lined the floor of the lagoon, prodding under the dark blur he assumed was a rock or perhaps an clam before he heard you call him by the nickname you gave him, curious as it wasn’t feeding time yet. Perhaps it was another medical check, especially given his age.
Either way, he swam to the surface to find you kneeling down by the shore, a strange box in hand and an excited look on your face. “Hey, Shrimp, remember that promise I made about the glasses? Well, I kept it,” you mused before handing him a pair, “I hope these work for you.”
Upon realizing what you had, Rung excitedly took the glasses, putting them on and… frowning it seemed these frames made his vision worse, taking them off as the blurriness hurt his head.
“Oh, it seems those don’t work for you,” he mused, offering a different pair to him, “I have a few pairs until we find the right ones for you.” Through some trial and error, it seemed he found the perfect pair, big blue orbs staring at you as he swished his tail happily, the air being filled with a few melodic hums of excitement.
Though through your eyes, Shrimp was excited to see clearly again, Rung was ecstatic that the first thing he saw clearly again was your face. The way that your hair clung around your face, the light crisp from the sea water, the smile on your lips, slightly chapped from working outside and in the water, it was all so incredible to him. You were incredible to him and it made him feel something, something deep and primal that stirred inside him as he trilled in thanks before diving back down to the depths. He was searching for something, something that would interest you, something that would show he had interest in you, and maybe, just maybe, be able to communicate what you mean to him.

Round 3 - Mammalia - Peramelemorphia

(Sources - 1, 2, 3, 4)
The marsupial order Peramelemorphia contains the living families Peramelidae (“bandicoots”) and Thylacomyidae (“Greater Bilby”).
Peramelemorphs all tend to have a characteristic shape: a round, arch-backed body with a long, delicately tapering snout, upright ears, relatively long, thin legs, and a thin tail. They range from the size of a rat to the size of a rabbit. They are omnivorous, feeding mainly on soil-dwelling invertebrates, as well as seeds, fruit, and fungi. They possess a well-developed sense of smell and eyes that are adapted for nocturnal habits. They are are generally solitary, with females taking care of their young.
Female peramelemorphs have a pouch that opens to the rear, to protect their young while they dig for insects and their larvae. The gestation period of peramelemorphs is the shortest among mammals, at just 12-14 days. As in other marsupials, peramelemorph joeys are born as tiny, relatively undeveloped neonates and must crawl their way from the vagina to the pouch to latch on to a teat, where they will complete the rest of their development. Peramelemorph growth is fast, with bandicoots setting off on their own and becoming sexually mature at just three months of age. Female bilbies reach sexual maturity at five months of age, and male bilbies become sexually mature at eight months. This allows a given female to produce more than one litter per breeding season and gives peramelemorphs an unusually high reproductive rate compared to other marsupials.
Peramelemorphs originated in the Late Oligocene. Both the oldest modern bandicoot (Peramelid) and the oldest bilby (Thylacomyid) are known from Middle Miocene fossil deposits (around 15 million years old).
Propaganda under the cut:
The name bandicoot is based on the animal’s ratlike appearance. The name comes from an English corruption of an Indian word "pandi-kokku" meaning "pig-rat".
The smallest peramelemorph is the Mouse Bandicoot (Microperoryctes murina), which is 15–17.5 cm (5.9-6.9 in) long.
The Golden Bandicoot (Isoodon auratus) is especially adapted for life in hot, semi-arid environments. It has a low body temperature that is constantly changing, making it heterothermic. This allows the internal body temperature to fluctuate in response to extreme environmental temperatures without inhibiting and denaturing necessary proteins. Additionally, its low metabolic rate correlates to less heat being produced by the body, and a low thermal conductance does not allow the animal to capture and store heat well. A highly efficient panting mechanism allows for a low rate of evaporative water loss when cooling the body, conserving precious water.
The Northern Brown Bandicoot (Isoodon macrourus) is one of relatively few native Australian ground-dwelling mammals that is able to survive in urbanized landscapes, due to their generalized diet and habitat requirements.
The Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Perameles gunnii) (image 1) is the basis for the popular videogame character Crash Bandicoot, and was selected from a number of Tasmanian mammals by creators Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin for its appeal and relative obscurity.
Described in 2014, a fossil species of Miocene bandicoot found at the Riversleigh World Heritage Area was given the genus name Crash. It was given the species names bandicoot. Because paleontologists are just Like That.
Wiped out due to predation from introduced foxes and domestic cats, as well as land-clearing for farming, the Victorian subspecies of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Perameles gunnii) was declared Extinct in the Wild. Thanks to 30 years of conservation efforts, breeding the bandicoots in human care and establishing fox and cat-safe sanctuaries, the mainlaind population was changed from Extinct in the Wild to Endangered in September 2021, a first for Australian conservation!
The Giant Bandicoot (Peroryctes broadbenti) (image 3) is more than twice the weight of other bandicoots and adult males of the species can attain weights well in excess of 4 kg (8.8 lb).
Unlike bandicoots, Greater Bilbies (Macrotis lagotis) (image 2 and gif) are excellent burrowers and build extensive tunnel systems with their strong forelimbs and well-developed claws. Burrows spiral down, making it hard for predators to get in. A bilby typically makes several burrows within its home range, up to about a dozen; and moves between them, using them for shelter both from predators and the heat of the day, as they are desert-dwelling animals.
Greater Bilbies are generally solitary, however, there are some cases in which they travel in pairs. Pairs usually consist of two females as the sole caregivers of their offspring.
Greater Bilbies do not need to drink water, as they retain all the moisture they need from their food.
Because rabbits are invasive in Australia, introduced by European settlers, bilbies have been popularised as an Australian alternative to the Easter Bunny. Haigh's Chocolates in Adelaide made 950,000 chocolate “Easter Bilbies” between 1993 and 2020, with proceeds donated to the Foundation for Rabbit-Free Australia, which does environmental work to protect the indigenous biodiversity of Australia.
Today, only the Greater Bilby survives and is vulnerable, but the Lesser Bilby (Macrotis leucura) is a recently extinct relative, having possibly survived into the 1960s. Its extinction was much “quieter” than that of the Thylacine, and was likely due to introductions of invasive predators like the domestic cat and red fox. Other “quiet extinctions” include that of the Desert Bandicoot (Perameles eremiana) which appears to have disappeared between about 1943 and 1960, and the Nullarbor Barred Bandicoot (Perameles papillon) which was last collected in 1928.
Today, many peramelemorph species are still threatened and endangered due to habitat fragmentation and introduced predators, as well as from competition with introduced rabbits. Areas designated to conserve vulnerable populations of bilbies and bandicoots have predator exclusion fences built around them, and must be heavily monitored for break-ins. In Currawinya National Park in Queensland, high-salinity flood waters damaged a predator exclusion fence, allowing feral cats to enter the sanctuary, wiping out all the bilbies in the park.
#animal polls#round 3#mammalia#to be ENTIRELY CLEAR because I am a conservationist and this is a conservation hot topic and it’s probably going to come up a lot#I LIKE domestic cats and I like red foxes and I like rabbits#they are all 5 star animals to me#the issue here is irresponsible owners who don’t keep their pets contained and Those Pesky Europeans who thought it’d be fun to bring#foxes and rabbits along with them wherever they colonized so they could still recreationally kill them as a little#Memory of Jolly Old England#I do not fault cats and foxes and rabbits for doing what is instinctual to them#but I do think that it is our duty to fix the damages we’ve done to ecosystems by removing these introduced animals#With As Little Cruelty As Possible#and that unfortunately has to include culling them because there are not enough homes that can take in that many feral cats and there are#not enough zoos and sanctuaries to take in that many foxes and rabbits#Alright that’s it for THAT soapbox for now but because introduced animals and specifically domestic cats have done so much#ecological damage I absolutely can not promise it’s not going to come up again#because I am gonna use these to talk about conservation issues when I get the chance#Just Be Kind and Keep Your Cats Inside

does fourteen play videogames with the noble family
I feel like no one in the house is much more than a casual gamer, but Fourteen will occasionally pick a system out of That Box (you know, the cardboard one nearly every family has stashed in a closet or garage with all those out-of-date electronics) and fix it up. It started one day when he was bored and eyeballing the blender, and Donna found Rose’s old Nintendo DS in a drawer and told them there was a game on it where you could just play with cute dogs, if they could get it working. It keeps their hands busy, and it’s good fun for everyone when random old games get dusted off.
#what’s fourteen up to#fourteenth doctor#I’m sorry I know next to nothing about games and gaming systems#I feel like Shaun maybe plays that fifa game#and rose goes through phases for things like animal crossing#but they’ve never really been a huge gamer family bc they couldn’t necessarily afford it#so like they’ve got a handful of things like the old DS#but most were either used or gotten when they were already a bit out of date#does this concept make sense?#I’m trying to explain it on NyQuil#I feel like y’all know what I’m talking about#that box where your Nintendo Wii is#you know the one#it’s probably got your old pc disc games in it too#it’s where your copy of the OG simms or Zoo Tycoon is

9-1-1 can't be canceled until season 25 because we need to see Jee-Yun turn into a teenager and a young adult . She needs to be seen going on adventures with Buck and Chris giving her highschool advice while he's going to COLLEGE and interning at NASA .... We need to see Buck take her on an uncle-niece trip up north in a remote cabin where they get stuck in a snow storm and nobody hears back from them , Maddie and Chimney are freaking out because they hear about the weather and it wasn't predicted and they've gone radio silent . The snow storm gets pretty bad but Buck lights the fire place and tells Jee-Yun to STAY where she is and he goes out in the storm to find his car or check on something outside or get fire wood , any of those things and he gets caught up in it real bad and gets a few ouches ... ouches as in A BROKEN LEG ! Jee-Yun immediately gets ready even after Buck says stay cause she definitely doesn't listen to him and has to traverse through the snow and find him .. he's been out there at least 40+ minutes and Jee-Yun knows that hypothermia is just right around the corner .. it's tense and dark and windy and cold but Jee-Yun doesn't give up , she has to find her Buck and when she does .. she already has an emergency med kit , she splints his leg and gives him a blanket .. they have to hobble their way back to the cabin and get Buck warmed up stat . Jee-Yun has basically been prepped to deal with any kind of weather emergency and injury so she knows what to do !! Buck doesn't even need to tell her or walk her through anything really .. he's so proud of her by the way . Like she's been growing up with first responders her entire life , OF COURSE she knows hypothermia recovery , of course she knows how to splint a leg , of course she knows how to treat any kind of wound . Her mother was a nurse and is a 911 dispatcher , her father is a paramedic AND a firefighter , her uncle is the bravest but most reckless firefighter she knows ... Her captain grandad has been through SO many situations and they have fully prepped her for EVERY kind of emergency . Eddie and Hen have showed her all the equipment and medical treatment stuff they use and have totally done training exercises .. I honestly don't think Jee-Yun would even BE into firefighting or anything like that but she KNOWS because her entire family wants the best for her , they've been so protective but in the way that they TRUST her and they have TAUGHT her the hardest life lessons that they've all been through ... She's so loved , so she will save and treat Buck .
#911#911 abc#911 show#911 spoilers#911 drabble#911 headcanons#911 rambles#evan buckley#eddie diaz#christopher diaz#chimney han#maddie buckley#madney#jee yun buckley han#Wow this kinda got away from me but like DO YOU SEE MY VISION !! SHE WILL SAVE BUCK IN A STRESSING SITUATION ONE DAY !!!#And I can SO go on about her and Chris being besties and Eddie and Buck taking them out on so many zoo trips like omg We need this#Eddie would so be the funny uncle btw like I think Buck would be too but he'd also be so protective and care sm about her#Like thats his little niece bestie !! She'd be a menace too and ask him for money all the damn time#I just so need this guys please don't cancel until she's at least 15 years old and Chris is 20 and going to intern at NASA#jation 911 brainrot

One of my all time favorite things is to go to good will or yard sales or a thrift place or whatever place has a ton of other peoples old books and just look for notes.
Like today I found a book from 1967 with a note written on the inner cover "Dee, heres another newbury for you collection!"
Or someones writing class syllabus folded up and tucked into the back of a Brothers Grimm.
Theres something about the human connection of it all
#i can get a cheaper version of this thrill by lookin thru my own old books#like i found my elsewhere book with a scrap of paper tucked between the pages#and its this little drawing of the main character on a lined paper#oh! one time i found like a ticket to the zoo as a bookmark in a warrior cats book
