Day 44/100: The Doubt Point. Another of Hervé Bazin creations, the doubt point ends a statement with uncertainty (I can imagine a raised inflection too if attempting to convert this mark to speech). It looks like a dashing zigzag exclamation mark & I can imagine plenty of uses for it in the modern world! Day 40/100: The Hedera. (Another excuse to share a #heart!) "Hedera" is Latin for ivy which perhaps explains the likeness of this #punctuationmark to a heart-shaped ivy leaf. The hedera is found primarily in early Latin and Greek texts. Its purpose was to signify a break between paragraphs, as well as to look nice upon the page. Also known by some as a 'fleuron', the mark had a strictly ornamental use; perhaps the reason for its extinction? There are many different variants and designs of the hedera, and the mark can be placed vertically or, alternatively, rotated onto its side and displayed horizontally. Day 35/100: The Interpunct. Putting a space between words seems like a no-brainer, but it’s actually a relatively new idea. Back in antiquity, they either mushed all of their words together, or used a symbol called an interpunct (). Looking like a raised fullstop, the interpunct is still occasionally used as a multiplication sign. You can also find it in the Catalan language, where it’s used to distinguish a double L (as in goril·la) from an LL (as in tortilla). In British English, it can be used a decimal point, though the American custom of using a period has made this form obsolete.
