Day 87/100: The Euro Sign (€). The currency sign used for the euro, the official currency of the Eurozone in the European Union (EU). The design was presented to the public by the European Commission on 12 December 1996. The international three-letter code for the euro is EUR. Inspiration for the € symbol itself came from the Greek epsilon (ϵ) – a reference to the cradle of European civilization – and the first letter of the word Europe, crossed by two parallel lines to ‘certify’ the stability of the euro. [Vectorised version of Wikipedia's € symbol, layered over a sunset, because when I think of Europe I always think of the sun - & then the sunsets...🌄] #100daysofthepunctuationproject #100days #the100dayproject #gm100dayproject #punctuation #punctuationdesign #punctuationsymbols #currencysymbols #currency #euro #eurosign #europe #eurosymbol #theeuro #eurozone #eu #europeanunion #€ #vector #vectorart #sunset #creativehabit #dailyhabit #creativerepresentation #epsilon #greek #greeklanguage #wikipedia

Day 82/100: The Exclamation Comma. This now-extinct glyph was created and patented in Canada by three American inventors in 1992, and true to its name, it was designed to both look and act like the lovechild of the incredibly utilitarian comma and the equally hated and adored exclamation point. Inventors Leonard Storch, Haagen Ernst Van and Sigmund Silber wrote in their patent application that the exclamation comma was for use 'within a written sentence between words as a comma, but with more feeling'. Likewise, the comma is for expressing a question before a sentence has ended. To draw it, you put the long vertical line of an exclamation point over the familiar curve of a comma. Like an exclamation point, it was used to denote excitement, add flourish, and generally lend a statement a certain degree of emotion and emphasis. Unfortunately, the exclamation comma isn’t standard in font sets and can’t easily be used in typing...c'est la vie! Day 47/100: The 'Doubt Point Pattern'. The doubt point lent itself to being a fun #punctuationpattern with its zigzag nature reminiscent of lightening. Can lightening strike twice? Day 23/100: The Umlaut. Nominally two dots above specific vowels in German, the word "umlaut" comes from one of the Brothers Grimm... Jacob Grimm was not only a collector of fairy tales (along with his brother Wilhelm), but also one of the most famous linguists ever. In 1819 he described a sound-change process that affected the historical development of German. He called it umlaut from um (around) + laut (sound). Technically, "umlaut" doesn't refer to the dots, but to the process where, historically, a vowel got pulled into a different position because of influence from another, upcoming vowel. Quite a lot going on for two tiny dots! Day 84/100: The Bullet Point. In typography, a bullet ( • ) is a typographical symbol or glyph used to introduce items in a list. The bullet symbol may take any of a variety of shapes, such as circular, square, diamond or arrow. Typical word processor software offers a wide selection of shapes and colors. When writing by hand, bullets may be drawn in any style & are usually used to highlight list elements. Day 57/100: The Broken Bar. The broken bar (¦) in computing was historically an allograph of the vertical bar. Since the 1990s, it is considered a separate character, but in many fonts, the glyph used for the vertical bar looks exactly like a broken bar. The broken bar has hardly any practical application and does not appear to have any clearly identified uses distinct from the vertical bar. In non-computing use - in mathematics, physics and general typography - the broken bar is not an acceptable substitute for the vertical bar. It's not on all keyboards but mine is a pretty cool #cherrykeyboard & the broken bar is right next to the number 1 (with 2 other functions for the same key). I think I could use it in a pattern if not in a written text... Day 33/100: The pilcrow (¶). Also called the paragraph mark, paragraph sign, paraph, alinea (Latin: a linea, "off the line"), or blind P, the pilcrow is a typographical character for individual paragraphs. The pilcrow can be used as an indent for separate paragraphs or to designate a new paragraph in one long piece of copy, as Eric Gill did in his 1930s book, An Essay on Typography. The pilcrow was a type of rubrication used in the Middle Ages to mark a new train of thought, before the convention of visually discrete paragraphs was commonplace. It is usually drawn similar to a lowercase q reaching from descender to ascender height; the loop can be filled or unfilled. It may also be drawn with the bowl stretching further downwards, resembling a backwards D; this is more often seen in older printing. Day 28/100: The Cedilla (/sᵻˈdɪlə/ si-DIL-ə; from Spanish), also known as cedilha (from Portuguese) or cédille (from French), is a hook or tail ( ¸ ) added under certain letters as a diacritical mark to modify their pronunciation. I know it's not only a Spanish mark, but it felt like a fun way to show this one off over the Spanish flag. The cedilla certainly makes me think of Spain, though 'Cachaça' is my favourite example of it in a word... 😉🍸 [Pencil on paper, digitally layered over the Spanish flag] #100daysofthepunctuationproject #100days #the100dayproject #gm100dayproject #thepunctuationproject #punctuation #punctuationmarks #punctuationpoints #diacritical #diacriticalmarks #diacriticalmark #spanishpunctuation #espanol #spanish #spanishflag #cachaca #cedilla #cedillas #thecedilla #cedilha #typography #type #lettering #letters #spanishlettering #pencilonpaper #coloursofspain #language #spanishlanguage

Day 24/100: The Ring Diacritic '°' or the 'angstrom' (I've not got the correct accents to type this word correctly, alas). It typically sits above letters a, o & u in languages such as Danish, Norwegian & Swedish, considered part of the letter itself, but distinct from the letter when present without the ring. It is also present in Czech but goes by a different name (Krouzek). I find it fascinating how languages & grammar rules manifest & the differences in alphabets & most commonly used letters differ across the languages. I chose this one today in honour of @by.smilinthyme & @huus57 & the conversation around yesterday's 'umlaut' - thanks again for chiming in! Day 100/100: The Full Stop (it had to be, right?!) In punctuation, the full stop (British, Australian, Irish and New Zealand English) or period (Canadian and American English) is a punctuation mark placed at the end of a sentence. The stop glyph is sometimes called a baseline dot because, typographically, it is a dot on the baseline. This term distinguishes the baseline dot from the interpunct (a raised dot). The full stop glyph is also used for other purposes. It is often placed after an initial letter used to stand for a name, and sometimes placed after each individual letter in an initialism (for example, "U.S.A."). It also has multiple contexts in mathematics and computing, where it may be called dot or point (short for decimal point). The full stop symbol derives from the Greek punctuation introduced by Aristophanes of Byzantium in the 3rd century bc. In his system, there were a series of dots whose placement determined their meaning. The full stop at the end of a completed thought or expression was marked by a high dot ⟨˙⟩ or "terminal dot". The "middle dot" ⟨·⟩ marked a division in a thought occasioning a longer breath (essentially a semicolon) and the low dot ⟨.⟩ or "underdot", marked a division in a thought occasioning a shorter breath (essentially a comma). In practice, scribes mostly employed the terminal dot; the others fell out of use and were later replaced by other symbols. From the 9th century, the full stop began appearing as a low mark instead of a high one; by the advent of printing in Western Europe, the low mark was regular & then universal. Day 98/100: The Part Alternation Mark. This Japanese #punctuationmark is used to indicate the beginning of a song, or the beginning of the next player's part. It was most common in Noh chanting books and Renga (linked verse). In Noh books it is used to mark the beginning of each character's (or the chorus') parts. I think this #symbol is really unusual & interesting & couldn't resist the similarity with mountain peaks! 🏞 [Wool arranged over an image of Scottish mountains on the approach to Glencoe] #100daysofthepunctuationproject #the100dayproject #100days #gm100dayproject #punctuation #thepunctuationproject #punctuationmarks #punctuationdesign #punctuationsymbols #punctuationlibrary #japan #japanese #japanesepunctuation #japaneselanguage #japanesesymbol #partalternationmark #partalternation #music #musicalsymbols #chorus #renga #linkedverse #verse #nohchanting #song #mountains #mountainpeaks #scottishmountains #scotland #glencoe #wool #ballofwool #creativerepresentation #creativeplay #creativehabit #dailyhabit #elleluna #annedillard

Day 95/100: Musical Half Note. In music, a half note (American) or minim (British) is a note played for half the duration of a whole note (or semibreve) and twice the duration of a quarter note (or crotchet). It was given its Latin name (minima, meaning "least or smallest") because it was the shortest of the five note values used in early medieval music notation (Morehen and Rastall 2001). Half notes are notated with a hollow oval notehead like a whole note and straight note stem with no flags like a quarter note. The American term half note is a 19th-century loan translation of German halbe Note. Day 94/100: Guillemets. Also called angle quotes, Latin quotation marks, or French quotation marks, guillemets are polylines pointed like arrows (« or »), sometimes forming a complementary set of punctuation marks used as a form of quotation mark. The symbol at either end - double « and » or single ‹ and › - is a guillemet & they are used in a number of languages to indicate speech or inner monologue. They resemble the symbols for lesser than (<), greater than (>), as well as rewind and fast forward on various media players, such as VCRs, DVD players, and MP3 players. The word is a diminutive of the French name Guillaume (the equivalent in English being William), after the French printer and punchcutter Guillaume Le Bé (1525–98). Some languages derive their word for guillemets analogously: The Irish term is Liamóg, from Liam 'William' and a diminutive suffix. Day 93/100: The Return (Key). I wasn't totally sure about including this one as it's not strictly punctuation as we know it, but like the 'space', it's essential to electronic communications. And I quite like it's aesthetic... The "return" key is often referred to as the "enter" key, and they usually perform identical functions; however in some particular applications (mainly page layout, word processing and in typewriting), "return" operates specifically like the carriage return key from which it originates. It normally has an arrow pointing down and left (⏎ or ↵), which is the symbol for carriage return.
