Day 82/100: The Exclamation Comma. This now-extinct glyph was created and patented in Canada by three American inventors in 1992, and true to its name, it was designed to both look and act like the lovechild of the incredibly utilitarian comma and the equally hated and adored exclamation point. Inventors Leonard Storch, Haagen Ernst Van and Sigmund Silber wrote in their patent application that the exclamation comma was for use 'within a written sentence between words as a comma, but with more feeling'. Likewise, the comma is for expressing a question before a sentence has ended. To draw it, you put the long vertical line of an exclamation point over the familiar curve of a comma. Like an exclamation point, it was used to denote excitement, add flourish, and generally lend a statement a certain degree of emotion and emphasis. Unfortunately, the exclamation comma isn’t standard in font sets and can’t easily be used in typing...c'est la vie! Day 23/100: The Umlaut. Nominally two dots above specific vowels in German, the word "umlaut" comes from one of the Brothers Grimm... Jacob Grimm was not only a collector of fairy tales (along with his brother Wilhelm), but also one of the most famous linguists ever. In 1819 he described a sound-change process that affected the historical development of German. He called it umlaut from um (around) + laut (sound). Technically, "umlaut" doesn't refer to the dots, but to the process where, historically, a vowel got pulled into a different position because of influence from another, upcoming vowel. Quite a lot going on for two tiny dots! Day 33/100: The pilcrow (¶). Also called the paragraph mark, paragraph sign, paraph, alinea (Latin: a linea, "off the line"), or blind P, the pilcrow is a typographical character for individual paragraphs. The pilcrow can be used as an indent for separate paragraphs or to designate a new paragraph in one long piece of copy, as Eric Gill did in his 1930s book, An Essay on Typography. The pilcrow was a type of rubrication used in the Middle Ages to mark a new train of thought, before the convention of visually discrete paragraphs was commonplace. It is usually drawn similar to a lowercase q reaching from descender to ascender height; the loop can be filled or unfilled. It may also be drawn with the bowl stretching further downwards, resembling a backwards D; this is more often seen in older printing. Day 28/100: The Cedilla (/sᵻˈdɪlə/ si-DIL-ə; from Spanish), also known as cedilha (from Portuguese) or cédille (from French), is a hook or tail ( ¸ ) added under certain letters as a diacritical mark to modify their pronunciation. I know it's not only a Spanish mark, but it felt like a fun way to show this one off over the Spanish flag. The cedilla certainly makes me think of Spain, though 'Cachaça' is my favourite example of it in a word... 😉🍸 [Pencil on paper, digitally layered over the Spanish flag] #100daysofthepunctuationproject #100days #the100dayproject #gm100dayproject #thepunctuationproject #punctuation #punctuationmarks #punctuationpoints #diacritical #diacriticalmarks #diacriticalmark #spanishpunctuation #espanol #spanish #spanishflag #cachaca #cedilla #cedillas #thecedilla #cedilha #typography #type #lettering #letters #spanishlettering #pencilonpaper #coloursofspain #language #spanishlanguage

Day 98/100: The Part Alternation Mark. This Japanese #punctuationmark is used to indicate the beginning of a song, or the beginning of the next player's part. It was most common in Noh chanting books and Renga (linked verse). In Noh books it is used to mark the beginning of each character's (or the chorus') parts. I think this #symbol is really unusual & interesting & couldn't resist the similarity with mountain peaks! 🏞 [Wool arranged over an image of Scottish mountains on the approach to Glencoe] #100daysofthepunctuationproject #the100dayproject #100days #gm100dayproject #punctuation #thepunctuationproject #punctuationmarks #punctuationdesign #punctuationsymbols #punctuationlibrary #japan #japanese #japanesepunctuation #japaneselanguage #japanesesymbol #partalternationmark #partalternation #music #musicalsymbols #chorus #renga #linkedverse #verse #nohchanting #song #mountains #mountainpeaks #scottishmountains #scotland #glencoe #wool #ballofwool #creativerepresentation #creativeplay #creativehabit #dailyhabit #elleluna #annedillard

Day 83/100: The Dollar Sign $. The dollar sign is a symbol primarily used to indicate the various units of currency around the world. The symbol can interchangeably have one or two vertical strokes. In common usage, the sign appears to the left of the amount specified, as in '$1' (one dollar). The dollar sign with two vertical lines could have started off as a monogram of 'USA', used on money bags issued by the United States Mint. The letters U and S superimposed resemble the historical double-stroke dollar sign Cifrão symbol: the bottom of the 'U' disappears into the bottom curve of the 'S', leaving two vertical lines. It is postulated from the papers of Dr. James Alton James, a professor of history at Northwestern University from 1897 to 1935, that the symbol with two strokes was an adapted design of the patriot Robert Morris in 1778. Day 60/100: The Grave Accent ( ` ). A diacritical mark in many written languages, the grave accent first appeared in the polytonic orthography of Ancient Greek to mark a lower pitch than the high pitch of the acute accent. In modern practice, it replaces an acute accent in the last syllable of a word when that word is followed immediately by another word. The grave and circumflex have been replaced with an acute accent in the modern monotonic orthography. The accent mark was called βαρεῖα, the feminine form of the adjective βαρύς (barús), meaning "heavy" or "low in pitch". This was calqued (loan-translated) into Latin as gravis, which then became the English word grave. The grave accent marks the stressed vowels of words in Maltese, Catalan, and Italian. I've gone a bit psychedelic for this one: [An arrangement of grave accents to make a geometric flower on a marbled background] #100daysofthepunctuationproject #100days #the100dayproject #gm100dayproject #punctuation #thepunctuationproject #punctuationmarks #punctuationdesign #punctuationlibrary #graveaccent #grave #ancientgreek #latin #language #pronunciation #vowels #vowelaccents #punctuationrules

Day 55/100: The Single Asterisk. A symbol (*) used in text as a pointer to an annotation or footnote; and as a verb, to mark (a word or piece of text) with an asterisk: "asterisked entries" An asterisk (*; from Late Latin asteriscus, from Ancient Greek asteriskos, "little star") is a typographical symbol or glyph. It is so called because it resembles a conventional image of a star. Computer scientists and mathematicians often vocalize it as star (in the A* search algorithm or C*-algebra for example). In English, an asterisk is usually five-pointed in sans-serif typefaces, six-pointed in serif typefaces, and six- or eight-pointed when handwritten. It can be used as censorship and is often used on the Internet to correct spelling. In computer science, the asterisk is commonly used as a wildcard character, or to denote pointers, repetition, or multiplication. Day 52/100: The Question Comma. "Because not every question ends the sentence" A tool that authors can use to “reflect spoken language or thoughts more closely.” Except it's not commonly known and isn't found on the average (any?) keyboard. A nice one to imagine though, or throw in to handwritten notes? I wish I could type it here! Day 49/100: The Lozenge ♢ This diamond-shaped mark when used in text usually serves as a bullet point. Recently, it's evolved into a more versatile symbol, representing a thin rhombus in mathematics or a lane restriction symbol on street signs. Fancy! Day 46/100: The Interrobang. It has all the drama and excitement of “?!” but without having to type two characters. What could be more useful than that?! The interrobang, also known as the interabang ‽ is a nonstandard punctuation mark used in various written languages and intended to combine the functions of the question mark (also called the "interrogative point") and the exclamation mark or exclamation point, known in the jargon of printers and programmers as "the bang". The glyph is a superimposition of these two marks. I say bring this one back! Day 42/100: Punctuation Pattern #2 "A Question (of love)" I'm on a roll with the patterning of my #punctuation motifs so far. This one combines the question mark, double quotations & the recent 'hedera' to reveal a not-very-hidden message "A Question (of love)". See what I did there? I recoloured it for a spring-like vibe in dashing #chartreuse & #heliotrope with the dark greys & black of the original motifs. Perhaps a good #pattern for a notebook? Day 41/100: The Punctuation Pattern. As I near the halfway point of the project, it felt like a good time to throw a #pattern into the mix. I've used #punctuation motifs from the previous 40 days, including day one's inked exclamation marks which are one of my favourites so far. And yellow seemed like a good, cheery, almost-summer background colour ☉ [Digitised hand drawn punctuation elements in a technical repeat pattern] #100daysofthepunctuationproject #100days #the100dayproject #thepunctuationproject #gm100dayproject #punctuationmarks #punctuationpoints #punctuationpattern #surfacepatterndesign #patterndesign #punctuationtheme #punctuationlibrary #libraryofpunctuation #yellow #punctuationmotifs #design #punctuationdesign #exclamationmarks

Day 40/100: The Hedera. (Another excuse to share a #heart!) "Hedera" is Latin for ivy which perhaps explains the likeness of this #punctuationmark to a heart-shaped ivy leaf. The hedera is found primarily in early Latin and Greek texts. Its purpose was to signify a break between paragraphs, as well as to look nice upon the page. Also known by some as a 'fleuron', the mark had a strictly ornamental use; perhaps the reason for its extinction? There are many different variants and designs of the hedera, and the mark can be placed vertically or, alternatively, rotated onto its side and displayed horizontally.
