🤧💕 ok here is one for you, from the follow-up to vignettes that i have absolutely no intention of finishing because the plotline i made for it is literally a fucking novel anyway long story short this is right before drake gets shot lmao

word count is 1300+ feat. STUPID boys and also olivia; they’re at a ball and liam has been gone but now hes BACK

He stops listening to Riley when he hears the heralds announce Liam into the room, turning towards the doors and catching sight of him for the first time all week.

He’s wearing a burgundy suit, tailored to perfection as they always are, shaking hands with some foreign dignitary while his smile lights up the room. He’s so disarmingly handsome that it takes Drake’s breath away, his eyes following Liam as he makes his way through the formal greetings.

He can’t stop thinking about him, about kissing him and holding him and messing up that perfectly done hair, about the two of them in bed together, just nestled in close as the morning breaks through the curtains. He thinks about the way Liam always helps to fix his poorly-tied ties, the way he laughs at every bad joke, the way he threads their fingers together when Drake takes his hand.

He misses Liam so desperately that it aches in him like a physical wound, every ounce of willpower straining to keep him from crossing the room and kissing Liam until he takes his breath away, too.

He doesn’t notice how clear his distraction is until he feels Riley’s hand on his arm. “Drake?”

“Hm?” He answers absently, still not listening. One of the palace staff whispers something in Liam’s ear, and he fiddles with a cufflink and nods in acknowledgement before turning to greet another well-wisher in the proceeding line. Drake watches him, so entirely in his element, so definitively royal that he feels his chest tighten.

At his side, Riley lets out a laugh of realization. “Oh. How rude of me to interrupt.”

“Come on,” Drake tries to refocus, rolls his eyes at her. “That’s — it’s not…”

But it is, and he trails off, still gazing out at Liam, only a week removed and yet somehow more enticing than ever. He’s suddenly quite unsure how he managed to last this long without seeing him in the flesh, and even as the feeling makes him want to gag for its saccharine stupidity, he assures himself he will do whatever he can to stay close to Liam from now on.

“Your boy looks sharp,” Riley teases, grinning at him now, which — ugh. “Maybe you should give him your number.”

“Riley, for the love of —“

“You don’t get to make fun of me for months and not let me have this,” she elbows him, laughing again. “Anyway, you know you want to ditch me for him. Can’t blame you; he’s a babe.”

Drake can only nod, embarrassed at how quickly Liam’s presence in the room has rendered him speechless. He must look like an absolute idiot, staring across the room at the King of Cordonia with hearts in his eyes. And yet he can’t bring himself to stop.

“You two are disgusting,” Riley adds, surveying him with a smirk. “And after all the shit you gave me when it came to romance, too.”

“It’s different,” Drake says, not taking his gaze off Liam for a moment.

“Different, my ass. I’m going to find Maxwell.” She pats him on the shoulder affectionately. “Have fun, lovebird.”

He’s still cognizant enough to manage a glare at her for that comment, but when he turns back, all is forgotten as Liam catches his eye.

He’s crossing the room before Drake can compose himself, smiling so brightly it sparks a warmth in Drake, too. When he’s only a few steps from Drake, he hesitates, pausing for a moment before saying, “Hi.”

“Hi,” Drake answers, smiling back.

They just smile at each other for a few seconds, drinking each other in, and then Liam glances off to the side, fiddling with his cufflink again.

“Is that a new suit?” Drake asks.

“Oh,” Liam’s gaze falls to his sleeve. “Yes, it’s something one of the local designers put together. Cordonian Ruby red, if you will. Well, a bit more understated than that.” He finally lifts his eyes, meeting Drake’s almost bashfully. “What… what do you think?”

Drake doesn’t even bother to lower his voice. “God, you look fucking incredible.”

That familiar blush creeps up in Liam’s cheeks, and he crosses his arms over his chest, embarrassed. “Drake.”

“I mean, Jesus — look at you,” Drake says, stepping forward and running his hands up Liam’s arms, across his shoulders, pausing at the lapel of his suit jacket before lifting his eyes back up to Liam’s. “You sure you can’t step away for a few minutes?”

Liam laughs, but his blush still deepens. “As much as I’d love to, duty unfortunately calls.”

“Okay, but consider this,” Drake lets his hands fall back to his sides, but not before trailing one down Liam’s arm to brush his fingers. “I want to kiss you.”

Liam’s smile is so bright and warm that Drake can’t help but reach out to touch his hand again. “Is that all?”

“Well,” Drake says, voice low as he traces a circle on Liam’s palm. “If I said out loud what I’m really thinking right now, your security team might arrest me.”

“We can’t have that,” Liam says softly, clearly enamored as he gazes back at Drake. “You’ll just have to save it for later.”

“Yeah,” Drake replies, “when we’re alone.”

Liam looks away, but Drake still catches the grin on his face. “A moment that could not come sooner.”

Drake takes his voice even lower, the next moment only for the two of them, the only two people in the whole world. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too. More than you know.”

“Ah, I think I have a pretty good idea.”

Liam touches his hand, the gesture a perfect complement to the softness in his eyes. “Someday soon we’ll never have to part from each other, I’ll make sure of it.”

Drake feels his heartbeat speed up just looking at Liam. When he talks like that, it’s all Drake can do to try and deflect from the way his blood goes hot all over.

His guard down entirely, he lifts one corner of his mouth in a crooked smile. “You know I’d follow you anywhere.”

The two of them spend another charged moment locked on each other, staring like lovesick fools (which, well, aren’t they?). Slowly, and to his great displeasure, Drake begins to remember where they are.

He clears his throat, reaching up to rub the back of his neck. “We shouldn’t… I mean, until things are… you know.”

“You’re right,” Liam sighs, giving him one last longing look. “I don’t want to start gossip we can’t control.”

“Exactly,” Drake says, whispering so only Liam can hear, “and you don’t want to start something you can’t finish, either.”

“Well, someone’s feeling particularly bold tonight,” Liam’s eyes sparkle. “Save some of that for later, won’t you?”

Drake laughs, but as Liam turns to leave, he reaches out to catch his arm, voice even softer when Liam looks back at him this time. “I love you.”

Liam’s expression softens, a smile spreading across his face. He places his hand atop Drake’s for the briefest of moments, whispering back, “I love you too.”

And then he’s off, back into the crowd like the figurehead he is, the rest of the attendees drawn to him like the sun.

He’s mine, Drake thinks, an embarrassing fluttery feeling blooming in his chest. That one is mine.

An unmistakeable voice to his left shakes him right out of his reverie. “You know everyone knows you’re his sugar baby, right?”

He sighs, turning to look at Olivia with his arms crossed. “What do you want?”

“I’m just saying, you could be more subtle, is all,” Olivia takes a demure sip of her champagne, one eyebrow raised. “Every time the two of you so much as look at each other, it’s like a Nicholas Sparks novel fucked a Hallmark movie. I mean, Jesus — can you not go down on him in a bathroom beforehand or something? Get it out of your system?”

“You’re a real peach, you know that?” Drake says, rolling his eyes at her. She frowns, but doesn’t remotely let up.

“I’m just giving you some advice on how to be more discreet, but if you want to keep eyefucking at every public occasion, go right ahead.”

“Well, stop watching, then,” Drake replies, frowning right back.

Louise Tate

Louise Tate’s dreamy oil paintings are self-referential, drawing on her own life experience to illustrate themes relating to care, women and the natural environment. Her canvases depict an imagined utopian world, where nature and the human body flourish symbiotically. There are obvious parallels to draw between her compositions and the sunshine-hued Impressionist paintings of Monet and Bonnard, but with a thread of magic woven through its realism. Disembodied hands edge into scenes, or a pair of singlet straps dance in mid-air by themselves, hinting that the paintings occupy a a playful, otherworldly realm.

‘I often feel as though I’m nourishing the land of my paintings with my hands, just like a gardener who tends to the soil,’ Louise says. In addition to her Impressionist influences, Louise’s stories and characters are inspired by figurative artists Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Toyin Ojih Odutola, as well as Zadie Smith’s fiction and Olivia Laing’s philosophy. Her detailed, intricate works would be in good company amongst these visionary thinkers!

Looking at her work, it’s hard to believe Bethany Saab only picked up a paint brush for the first time last year. With an established career in psychology, a floristry business and three kids, it’s fair to say that util now, she just didn’t have the time! But to dwell on her lack of formal art training belies Bethany’s obvious talent. The emerging artist is already represented bye and staged her first solo exhibition in January this year – a huge feat in the first twelve months of her practice.

Bethany paints mostly still-lifes using acrylic paints, translating scenes from her home to her canvas with tight, detailed precision. She positions everyday household objects against bold-high contrast backgrounds: the fold of a Kirsten Perry ceramic against a striped table cloth, or a tangerine segment placed on a checkered platter. She often includes the shadows and reflections of objects to create tension and convey mood. Her inspirations span centuries and hemispheres, from Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele to Margaret Olley and Arthur Streeton.

If this is what Bethany’s work looks like just a year into her practice, things are looking bright!

Abstract art can be alienating for some people, but Amalia Keefer makes it all seem so easy. Her big, bright canvases are a symphony of colour and movement, inspired by static moments in her day. She captures feeling and emotion with ease, using colour combinations to express the things words often fail to articulate.

After living in Melbourne for years, working in hospitality and studying textile design, Amalia moved home to Queensland at the beginning of the pandemic. Only then did she have the time, space and financial security to properly turn her attention to painting and focus on honing her style. And how it has flourished!

Mia Boe

Mia Boe is a descendent of the Butchulla people from K’gari (Fraser Island) in Queensland. Her compositions are politically charged, often depicting Aboriginal bodies in jail or beside slogan-like text, literally spelling out a call for action on racial injustice.

Though frank about the bleak reality of Australian racism, her paintings are colourful and surreal, depicting scenes without a recognisable time or place. Black bodies populate these landscapes, with long fingers, swollen faces or distended bellies. They are drovers, police, bushrangers and prisoners, constantly locked in states of survival.

‘All I know is that these strange swellings and stretchings have formed part of my response to the events of 2020, from the bushfires to the movement for black lives to the global pandemic,’ Mia says. She is inspired by iconic artist and Western Arrernte man Albert Namatjira and the ‘gaunt stockman’ typical of Robert Drysdale’s work. She is about to embark on a Masters of Contemporary Art – so watch this space!

Georgia Spain thinks her style is always changing but describes her textured, energetic compositions as ‘loose, intuitive mark-making’. Though obviously figurative, her style is almost impressionistic – devoid of hard lines and structured, demarcated bodies. Colours bleed into one another and the boundaries of each figure are only approximate, allowing the people in her paintings to fuse into each other and their surroundings.

The result is hazy but intoxicating. Shapes spill forth easily from her arrangements, like a flower blooming in fast-motion or metallic oily swirls moving across the surface of a puddle.

Based in Tasmania, Georgia is currently displaying work in an online exhibition at Egg & Dart called Both Ways Is The Only Way I Want It and preparing for a show through artist-run gallery Good Grief from march 12th – April 1st.

Emily Imeson

Emily Imeson’s soaring red landscapes are at once vast and intimate, beckoning the viewer closer and offering moments they might have missed. A recent recipient of the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, Emily’s paintings of the intense Australian wilderness are dynamic, combining deep ochres with burnt orange and pops of pink and blue.

Before travel restrictions were in place, Emily worked on the road, using the side of her four wheel drive as an easel and even hanging rolls of painted canvas from tree branches. This nomadic way of life gives Emily’s paintings a sense of momentum, with movement often crystallised in a single gliding bird or an ambling car which appears diminutive against a glittering inky sky.

With an appearance at Sydney Contemporary this year, a solo show at Edwina Corlette in August, and a collaboration with social enterprise Two Good Foundation on the artwork for their second cookbook to be released in October, Emily is well on the way to moving into the ‘established artist’ category!

Wes Waddell

Wes Waddell paints abstract artworks largely inspired by elements of Australian culture. Drawing on influences like Ken Done and Euan Heng, his ‘landscapes’ are snapshots of mundane Australian life: cracking a Victoria Bitters on the beach in Palm Cove, or having sunnyside-up eggs on toast for breakfast in Avalon.

Wes will be part of a group show at Brickworks Gallery Castlemaine in March.

Luciana Smith

Since she can remember, Luciana Smith has always been drawn to art-making, but it wasn’t until she discovered the vivid works of Sidney Nolan and Jean-Michel Basquiat in high school that she thought painting could be her medium. The surreal settings she creates now contain echoes of these original influences, searching for ways to express the absurdity and contradictions of everyday life through colour and scene.

‘I’m interested in lived-in spaces, objects, antiques, the absurd, the human, the unseen, the overheard,’ the artist says, outlining the way she seeks out tension in fictional settings to examine the strangeness in our real world. ‘My style is a combination of what I’ve been collecting visually and mentally to create dream-like environments.’

Ella Dunn

Ella Dunn grew up on a rural property on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, where she turned an old caravan into a darkroom and spent most of her teenage years honing her first artistic passion: photography. Though she discovered painting in her first year at art school, Ella’s experience with a camera proved to be invaluable training for her eventual return to the medium.

‘My paintings are often narrative based, gestural and figurative,’ she says. Now wielding a brush rather than a camera, the artist seeks to distill humorous or absurd moments in familiar everyday settings. Ella’s predilection for storytelling leads her to look outside her medium for inspiration, turning to artists like Bob Dylan and Helen Garner for new types of narrative.

Anh Nguyen has been painting since childhood, slowly honing her style over years and years of practice. The absence of formal art training is perhaps what makes her work so distinct, learning about perspective and perception from studying the work of other ‘painters who engage with the everyday and the world around them, who look at the world with feeling and curiosity’ rather than theory.

Anh’s impressionistic style is rooted in drawing and sketches, a format which allows her to play with light and colour easily. Her paintings encompass anything from tabletop still-lifes to domestic scenery.

She was in the bathroom putting on makeup, unaware - or more likely ignoring the fact - he watched her from the bed. Over the decades, after all, in hotel rooms just like that Parisian suite, she must have grown used to the sensation. He did love watching Caroline in her most unguarded moments.

Even in his agitation at the moment, his fingers itched to draw the exact shape of her eye as he focused on lining her lips.

But his eyes couldn’t linger on her face; no, they kept drifting down to the gap in her shirt, where the glint of her necklace boiled his blood. The simple ring on a silver chain was a familiar sight after fifty years, and it had elicited many emotions from him during that time: grief, anger, compassion, jealousy.

He felt jealous that Caroline would never fully be his, not as long as the ghost of Stefan Salvatore hung around her neck.

She didn’t wear it all the time. When they ran into each other at the Opera House, she had been wearing the ruby pendant Klaus bought for her in India; its dark red color matched that of her monster’s eyes. Her neck had been bare the night before when he peeled a little black dress away from her beautiful skin and she gasped his name.

After only a week exploring the city together, though, the infernal ring appeared yet again.

Six months in Tokyo, three in Rome. She managed just a week with him in Paris; if her pattern held, Caroline would be on a plane the next day. That damn ring always meant her leaving.

Nothing lasted forever, but grief came close. Perhaps the same was true for longing.

“Are you going to tell me what’s bothering you, or do you just want to stew in your thoughts for a while?” His eyes glanced up in surprise, meeting her own unimpressed gaze in the mirror. Caroline shrugged when he didn’t respond. “I don’t mind either way, I’d probably get more shopping done without you trying to weasel into the fitting rooms with me.”

Klaus bristled at the easy way she dismissed him: from her plans, from her life. But she could still clutch to her dead husband’s memory after half a century.

Not one to fight a losing battle, he knew what he had to do, even if he hated the thought of conceding defeat. When he spoke with his head hung low, his voice felt raw, the words like burning ash in his throat. “I can’t do this anymore.”

He felt the stillness in the room as they both lost their breath at his confession. Weak and mortal in the face of a baby vampire’s rejection, he realized it didn’t matter what he could offer; instead, she mourned another long gone.

He felt used.

With a helpless chuckle, Caroline watched him warily. “You’re tired of me already?”

“Don’t,” he snapped, harsh. His fists curled tightly on his knees, the stretch of his tendons loud in the following silence.

And then she was kneeling in front of him, her hands gently lifting his face to her wide eyes. “Hey, you’re scaring me.” Caroline’s thumb stroked his cheekbone, and he couldn’t help but lean into her warm palm. “I thought we were good, we were having such a good week.”

Before he could let her soothe his angst, a tiny metallic scrape dropped his eyes again to the silver chain and the ring he knew dangled at the end of it. “A good week,” he muttered, angrily wrenching himself from her grasp and off the bed altogether. “He gets fifty years, and I get a week.”

Though she had risen with him, Caroline’s knees buckled beneath her. Her voice turned faint. “W-what?”

Forcing himself to keep from touching her, Klaus shook his head. “Year after year, I let you wander into my life, only to wander away just as easily. I hate that I want you, that I miss you when you’re gone.” He flashed toward her, stopping just an inch from her face with his fist gripping the silver chain. “Yet I am right here, and you’re missing someone else.”

A familiar anger lit in her eyes. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” she warned.

“Don’t I?” he challenged. “I will never mean as much to you, you will always want him more.”

Caroline stared, her brow furrowed in consternation and her voice fell to a murmur. “He didn’t get fifty years.” She brought her hands back up to Klaus’s face, making him look at her. “He didn’t even get a full day.”

“I hate you,” Klaus realized sadly. He hated that she could make him mourn her loss, that his heart ached for her the same as it did his own pain. Over half a century, and all he wanted was to ease her sorrow. Caroline made him weak, for a reason he hated to acknowledge. But with her teary eyes on him, the words burst from his chest anyway. “I love you.”

Her chest swelled with a deep, broken breath. “I know.”

His teeth ground together. “Then you know I can’t be with you. Not while you’re still another man’s wife, even in memory.”

With a wan smile, Caroline covered his hand with her own, both of them holding the simple metal that opened a chasm between them. “I don’t wear it to remember being his wife,” she promised. “I wear it to remember being a widow.”

Klaus frowned, his forehead leaning down to hers. Still, he waited for her to explain.

“You,” she sighed, looking for the words. “You make me so happy, and all happiness has ever brought me is loss. The fear that I’ll lose you? It’s paralyzing, because I love you, too.” Caroline reached for his lips, kissing him softly. “This ring helps to remind me that I’m strong enough to handle that loss when it comes.”

Finally, Klaus released the ring to bring his hands to her face. “You can’t lose me, love.”

She snorted. “What happened to the guy ready to walk away because of a stupid ring?”

“He didn’t know you loved him.” Klaus drew her in closer, nuzzling his nose against her cheek. “Then you weren’t leaving?”

Her lips curled up into a mischievous smile. “I didn’t track you down in Paris to not collect on my last love,” she admitted.

Sliding his hands down to her hips, Klaus pinned her with a stern glare. “Be careful,” he said softly. “I won’t let you go.”

“That’s kinda the point, Klaus.” Caroline rolled her eyes as her fingers traced the line of his necklaces. “But the ring is a part of me, too. Can you handle that?”

He kissed her, deep and lingering. “You’ll be the death of me.”

Caroline grinned, cuddling into him. “Not if I can help it,” she promised.
