Lost Bird’s Forgotten Song

Author’s note: This isn’t a Something’s Changed Update, but The credit is going to the same person, @7spaceace7 because this piece was inspired by her “I Need a Surgeon” fic about Henrik! As always, I hope you all enjoy! A reminder that if you like anything that I’ve written, my Requests are open! Also, this one is DEFINITELY under the Keep Reading break because it took a full 6 pages in my google docs

It was dark out, the night sky obsidian black and freckled with glittering stars and a full, gleaming moon. Jackieboyman, protector of the city and one pissed off superhero, was finally turning in for the night as the sun would be rising soon. As a matter of fact, he could see it starting to peak over the horizon, but Jackie was in no mood to appreciate the beauty of a sunrise against the city skyline. Jackie hadn’t been in the mood for awhile now, tense and agitated in his own skin as he spent night after night hunting for a certain elusive glitch bitch. He’d stop to help the civilians, because he couldn’t just neglect them for tragedies in his personal life, he was the hero! But it was frustrating, every night that passed without him finding Anti was another night that something could happen to the people he cared about.

In addition to the agitation and frustration tugging at him, Jackie could feel exhaustion pulling at his mind and limbs. Every night that he went hunting for Anti was another night he didn’t sleep well, and he could tell the exhaustion was slowly taking its toll. It whispered from the corners, spawning and cultivating doubts and fears, things that he carried in his heart and which weighed heavily upon him.

Jackie would blame the exhaustion for his lack of awareness, but he almost didn’t notice that things weren’t quite right in his apartment. The hero paused a few paces from the open balcony he had entered through, suddenly noticing the eerie quiet to the room. It was always quiet when he came back from patrol, one of the side effects of living alone and spending all night out in an armoured protective suit saving people, but this silence… it was different. It hung heavy to the air and clung to his lungs with every breath, settling like a weight in his chest. The shadows seemed darker, more menacing in a way he hadn’t feared in a long time, pooling thick in corners and forming puddles on the ground. If he didn’t know better, he’d call it tar. Above all, it was the awful stillness that raised the most red flags in his mind. No matter how long Jackie spent away from the apartment, it always felt lived in and familiar whenever he came back. This? This felt unfamiliar and desolate, more like a crypt then a place someone actively lived in.

Something was very wrong.

“Aw, is that all the greetings I get, Jackie boy? For a friendly neighborhood superhero, you are awful at making people feel welcome!” Anti mused, giggling maniacally at the other’s severely unamused expression.

As if on cue, an awful, staticy cackle echoed in the room, raising the hairs on Jackie’s arms as he spun around to face the inky, shadowy corner that the Glitchy demon had concealed himself in. The red clad hero instinctively fell into a defensive stance, feet shoulder width apart and fists raised. His face falling into an angry snarl.

“Anti.”

“What the hell do you want Anti? Unless you’re looking for an ass kicking. Which I can happily provide” Jackie snarked back, glaring fiercely.

“I find it funny that you think that’s threatening, especially that you think I’d find that intimidating. Really, do you know who you’re talking to, Jackie boy? I’m offended!” Anti snorted in a rather ugly manner before physically waving it off. “But I digress! I had a question.”

“How does it feel to be the forgotten one, Jackie? I’ve been stirring up so much chaos in the community that I’ve almost… forgotten what it’s like! Haha!” Anti asked, but can’t help breaking into cackles at his little joke, ignoring the confusion on Jackie’s face.

“What the hell do you mean, I’m the forgotten one? The fans certainly haven’t forgotten me, and Jack loved superheroes, he’d never forget.” The hero was baffled, but didn’t fall from his defensive stance, ready if Anti tried anything. “Is this one of your tricks, Anti? Cause it’s not going to work!”

“Oh, but he was so busy, wasn’t he? Making videos, hanging out with friends… and yet he never even so much as called you” Anti pushed, eyebrow quirked and lips twisted into a sadistic grin. “You have to wonder if he had forgotten about you, Jackie. Surely it crossed your mind…”

“No, he hadn't! He would never forget any of us! Unlike you, he was our friend!” Jackie grit out, teeth bared and eyes glowing bright before he releases a bolt of green energy at the glitch. He didn't care if he singed or burned his apartment, he can always get it repaired later with a good enough excuse. If he let Anti get away now though, who knows when he would next be able to find and subdue the demon. That can’t happen, because who knows how many people Anti would have hurt by then? However, it wasn’t surprising when the glitchy rat simply glitched out of the way. “Don’t insult Jack by implying he wouldn’t remember his friends!”

“Oh testy testy... but surely you must wonder? When was the last time he came to check in on you, see how you were doing? When was the last time he did anything with you, Jackie?” The bleeding snake of an ego taunted, flicking out his wrists, and subsequently the knife, out in a bit of a shrugging gesture. Jackie could feel his blood boiling at the insinuations that Jack had left him behind, steadfastly ignoring the quiet part of his brain that was tired, insecure, and feeling small.

“Really? You're asking that? When you're the bastard that KILLED him in the first place?!” Jackie shouted, lunging forward with a fist cocked. He took a hard swing at Anti and let out a frustrated grunt when the dark ego danced just out of the way. He took a small satisfaction in the brief flash of alarm in the other’s eyes, rolling away from the retaliatory swipe of the knife. His eyes flashed radioactive green once more and he let another bolt of powerful energy fly at the other’s head, just barely missing him to slam into the wall.

“Jackie, Jackie, Jackie... you misunderstand me... when was the last time he had done anything with you before I got involved? Haha, of course I'm not asking about after I... t̶o̷o̶k̴ ̵c̴a̴r̸e̸ ̷o̴f̸ ̶h̵i̵m̵, though I am rather quite proud of that one! But my personal pride aside... surely you can't tell me never noticed?” Anti demurred, dancing out of the way of every blow Jackie was sent his way. The Glitch knew he couldn’t take a single hit or it would be game over, Jackie’s strength was no joke. He was a superhero for a reason, after all. Jackie tried to ignore the other’s nagging voice, because he knew that small, exhausted part of his brain would latch onto the other’s words if he focused on it. As it was, The hero could feel himself slowing quickly, the lack of sleep of the past couple of weeks was wearing on him and his stamina certainly took a hit. With each hit Anti dodged, Jackie would acquire another scratch or two from the other’s retaliation. Anti would never take anything lying down, after all.

“SHUT UP! GOD, You piss me off! I'm gonna knock that smug ass grin off your glitch bitch face!” Jackie screamed, not wanting to admit how that last comment was digging its barbs into his heart. He WAS slowing, the hero couldn’t muster up the speed he used to. Was it really because of the exhaustion? Or has he really been declining this entire time, and he’s just never noticed because so few of his opponents truly pushed him to his limits? … Was Anti right?

“You got your little music video... you got that one appearance in Welcome to the game... but then you were scraping by with just references. He stopped showing you in his videos, he eventually stopped mentioning you all together.” Anti continued, voice dripping with false sympathy, as if he genuinely felt bad for Jackie falling behind. However, that was quickly disproven when his voice took a gleefully sadistic edge, grin growing horrifyingly wide, showing teeth sharp enough that it made Jackie flinch back in fear of being bitten. “Meanwhile, everyone else was getting new videos! Even that magic cat brat got to come back before you! Face it, Jack forgot all about you, Jackie. Oh, and you know what happens to Egos who are f̶o̶r̴g̶o̷t̵t̴e̴n̷, don't you?”

“Everyday, you feel yourself grow just that little bit weaker, that little bit less relevant.” Anti sang, letting his words sink into the Hero’s mind. He was taking entirely too much joy in this, it was infuriating how easily Anti was dodging. The glitch was fucking with him and he HATED it. Jackie wanted to make the asshole shut his mouth, because he just wouldn’t stop speaking. His words were like nails on a chalkboard to the hero. “HA! You're slow! You don't hit like you used to Jackie, such a shame... You would have landed that no problem back when you were still relevant... you're only still here by the skin of your teeth, allowed to live and continue only by the grace of the audience. But you and I both know just how fickle they can be, Hero~”

“HAHAHA! You can certainly try, Hero. Should I even call you that? I don't know if you even deserve that title anymore... you certainly haven't done anything to earn it~” Anti jeered, singsonging it in Jackie’s face. He had leaned in, the two practically nose to nose before glitching out of the way of the other’s punch at the last possible second, as if to emphasize his taunts.

“No one asked you, ya ugly bastard!” Jackie shot back on instinct, though it was clearly something he shot back without thinking. With the dark thoughts starting to creep in heavily, that comment about whether he even deserved to be called a hero had shot through him like lightning. Jackie despised how the Glitch Demon knew exactly how to appeal to all of his inner demons and insecurities. Every person he failed to save, every fight that could have gone better, all of it weighed so heavily on the hero. It made for the perfect weakness to exploit. With an enraged shout, Jackie channeled all of his doubt, fear and rage into a single blow, managing to nail the demon in the nose far too quickly for the other to react. For once, the hero relished in the shattering of bone under fist, the crack of Anti’s snapping nose sounding unbelievably satisfying to the pissed off superhero.

“Oh, that hurt~” Anti crooned, sitting up with a dangerous grin, blood leaking down from his nose, dripping down his chin and joining the bloody mess of his neck. “Did I hit a N̷̹̕E̵̻̽͋R̷͎̓͠V̶̛̦̇E̶̹͐̎?! You don't need to be so sensitive, Jackie! I'm only saying what we've both been thinking! What e̶v̶e̷r̷y̵o̶n̸e̸'̶s̸ been thinking!”

“No you're not! Of course I'm a hero! That's my whole thing! I was born to be a hero! It's my duty to protect everyone!” Jackie tries to shout, but his voice was too weak to convey the same sort of authority it used to. It was clear that he was trying to recollect himself, to reassure and convince himself. Anti was starting to wear him down and Jackie didn’t know how to save himself.

“HA! You SAY that, but you only prove my point! You were BORN to be a hero, and yet what have you done?” Anti was digging in his heels, he wanted to make Jackie hurt. The hero was overwhelming in a one on one fight, but words? Words seem to be Jackie’s worst enemy. The demon’s voice turned hissed and glitchy, wanting Jackie to hear every word. “Where were you when I slit dear Jack's throat? Where were you when the good doctor was fighting for both Jack's life and his own? Where were you either of the times sweet, cheery JJ needed you to save him from M̷E̴?̶ ̶W̶H̴E̵R̷E̸ ̸W̵E̸R̷E̵ ̶Y̴O̵U̸ ̷J̴A̸C̵K̸I̵E̷?̴ ̶C̴A̶U̴S̸E̵ ̷I̷ ̸S̸U̴R̷E̸ ̵D̶I̶D̵N̷'̵T̵ ̸ ̷S̵ ̴E̴ ̶E̷ ̸Y̸O̵U̷ ̴T̷H̷E̸R̶E̸!̶ ̵H̸A̶H̷A̷”

Jackie flinched back, Anti’s voice shrill and drilling into the hero’s temples like an ice pick to the skull. The hero was still, eyes wide as he felt himself starting to freeze up, breath catching his throat. As the words left Anti’s mouth, Jackie felt his eyes start to burn, hands shaking. He wanted to yell, to scream, anything at all to make him just. Shut. Up. He didn’t want to hear it, he couldn’t bear to hear it. Because Anti was right. Where was he? When everyone needed him, where was he? Jackie felt cold all over, like he had been dunked in ice water and left to freeze.

“Some hero you are, Jackie! Who have you saved? Where have you been, huh? You say you're a hero Jackie, but from where I stand all I see is a failure and a coward, who never deserved to called himself a hero” Anti giggled, feeling his victory on the horizon and watching with glee as the Heroic ego winced, shoulders tense and raised towards his ears defensively. Their physical struggle settled in the face of the mental anguish that Anti was gleefully inflicting upon the hero.

“Shut... shut up... you don't know what you're talking about…” Jackie tried to protest, but his voice was soft and weak, practically a whisper. The fight was draining from his form, his protests more of a token fight at this point. How could he deny it? He failed. He couldn't save anyone. Anti was right. How could he call himself the others' friend, let alone a hero? He wasn't there, and nothing can excuse that. He was a coward. The burning behind Jackie's eyes grew unbearable, but he still fought to keep the tears back. He didn't want to cry in front of Anti, didn't want to give the demon the satisfaction.

“Oh, don't I? As the villain, I think I'd know the hero the best out of anyone.” Anti cackles, “Come on, What's wrong Jackie? It shouldn't bother you if I'm not speaking the truth~ Oh, but that's the thing, isn't it Jackie? It IS the truth, and you and I both know it.”

The burning feeling in the hero’s eyes finally spilled over, salty tears dripping from cobalt blue eyes as Jackie choked on the rising feelings of failure and grief. Emotions that he had been so steadily ignoring in favor of hunting down Anti resurged with a vengeance, and Jackie found himself sinking to his knees as he grappled with the staticy dark thoughts choking his mind. That grappling turns literal as his choked back sobs turn into desperate, choked gasps of air as something thick and corded wrapped around his neck and squeezed. His hands, which had been at his mouth in an attempt to muffle the sounds of his grief, flew down to his throat, tugging desperately at the cord as if he could make it budge.

…

The hero should, by all intents and purposes, be able to dislodge what he assumed to be some sort of rope or... Or physical manifestation of Anti’s powers from his throat with his superstrength. However, Jackie found that he couldn’t, the cord holding tight no matter how hard he pulled. Whether it be from a genuine sapping of his strength, or a simple lack of will to actually try, Jackie was as helpless to what was happening as any other regular human would be. The tears came faster and harder, dripping down his chin and landing in soft splashes on the ground and on his thighs. Another Failure. Some hero I am...

“Aw, don’t cry Jackie…” Anti cooed in a sickeningly sweet tone, all soft and fake concerned. The glitch lazily made his way around the kneeling hero, til he was directly behind Jackie. The demon fell into an easy crouch, arms curling around the other ego’s shoulders in a mocking facsimile of a hug. Jackie could almost believe it was one, if it weren’t for the sharp blade resting light on the tender flesh below the bruising rope burn on the hero’s neck. “It’ll all be over soon. Soon, you’ll never have to worry about failing another person. Ever. Again. I’m gonna put you out of your misery, hero, and you’ll finally be able to rest. Now doesn’t that sound just d̶e̶l̶i̶g̸h̷t̸f̷u̵l̴?̷”

That was the last thing Jackie heard the glitching demon croon before the rope was ruthlessly pulled even tighter and a silver blade was pulled, almost painlessly in comparison, across his throat. The world rapidly fell to black and then the Hero knew no more.

“H̶a̵…̴ ̴H̴o̶w̵ ̵p̵a̸t̵h̶e̶t̴i̵c̴…̶ ̷a̶n̸d̸ ̷h̶e̴r̷e̵ ̵I̶ ̸t̶h̶o̷u̶g̸h̴t̷ ̶y̸o̶u̸’̵d̵ ̶b̵e̵ ̸m̴y̴ ̶b̵i̶g̵g̷e̸s̶t̶ ̵t̷h̷r̵e̸a̵t̵ ̵o̷u̷t̴ ̸o̷f̷ ̵t̷h̵e̶ ̶b̷u̷n̶c̵h̵,̷ ̴w̸i̸t̵h̴ ̸a̸l̵l̶ ̴t̵h̵o̴s̸e̶ ̶p̷e̷s̴k̷y̴ ̶s̷u̵p̷e̴r̷p̸o̸w̴e̷r̶s̵.̴”

About Pride- you aren't wrong, but there's a difference between someone wearing leather gear and someone practicing other parts of a kink. Wearing a collar is fine, being on all fours on a leash is really not for public spaces. Because that's involving non-consenting strangers in your kink. Sure, it's good for people to know kink isn't wrong, but something not being wrong doesn't mean it's appropriate for public spaces. Just like sex isn't wrong, but having sex where minors and nonconsenting (1)

(2) strangers can come upon you without warning isn't a good idea. If there's an area that's specifically designated as an area where there will be sex and full kinkplay, great! Mark it clearly and go nuts. But if it's somewhere people could just come up without realizing, that's not a good idea. There are people who don't want to see strangers engaged in sexual activity, and there are parents who would immediately snatch their questioning kid away from any event like that.

(3) There's nothing wrong with indicators of kink in public. Leather gear, badges, flags, that kind of thing. But actual kink /play/ is too much for places where someone could accidentally walk into it. And I really don't think Pride should be designated a place where you should expect to find people performing sex acts randomly scattered about. Not because it's shameful, but because it's something that you need to get people's consent to involve them in.

(4) And I know kink isn't innately sexual, but a lot of it is going to be interpreted that way to someone unfamiliar with the exact scene. Besides, even the nonsexual kink requires consent from all involved. In short: anything that says or demonstrates "I'm into kink" is great, good for people to see, and often stylish. Actually /doing/ that kink, except in areas that are (literally or not) surrounded by "here be kink" signs, is not so great. Because, again, consent. Nothing to do with shame.

This is long, so I’m sticking a cut on it.

Okay, before I start I want to preface this with: I do actually see your point. I’m going to be arguing with you, but I really want that to be clear. For the most part, I agree with you. You’re just arguing a point that I didn’t try to make, and I kind of want to clear that up.

Second: my head is hurting worse than usual today (an explanation, not meant as points or to give me a pass if i’m wrong, lol) so if anything seems unclear or hard to understand, please point it out, and i’ll try and correct it/make it clearer.

Point 1: involving nonconsenting strangers in kink. I agree, that’s bad! But no one was actually talking about doing kinkplay in public at Pride. From what I understood*, it was more about having leather pride at kink, as in like- people wearing leather gear and/or kink gear that isn’t made of leather, and wearing leather pride pins and stuff. Not actually engaging in kinkplay. “There's nothing wrong with indicators of kink in public. Leather gear, badges, flags, that kind of thing.“ That’s exactly what I was referring to, in all honesty. Anything beyond that point is, as you said, involving strangers in your kink without their consent.

However, there’s one thing you said in there that I disagree with. “Wearing a collar is fine, being on all fours on a leash is really not for public spaces.“

I’d argue that a leash is fine, honestly. Maybe not to be at, I don’t know, a coffeeshop, but at a big busy festival like Pride with a ton of people around, I think something like that has a much higher chance of getting lost in the shuffle. Hands and knees don’t work because, crowds and being at knee height is unsafe, and if I were to take my sub to a place like that I’d be worried she’d get kicked in the face.

Point 2: “ And I know kink isn't innately sexual, but a lot of it is going to be interpreted that way to someone unfamiliar with the exact scene.“ Again, I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t agree with this either. There’s a lot of elements of kink that people connect with sex, but I think there are also a lot that the vast majority of people haven’t really thought about.** The vast majority of people are not very well educated on kink, and therefore there are a lot of elements of kink that absolutely fly under the radar to vanilla people.

Also, a secondary aspect of this is that queer people in general tend to be reduced to their sex lives as well, not just kinky people. Straight cis people- especially older people, from my parents’ generation and older- have a tendency to reduce gay men to ‘ew, they have gay sex!’ and lesbians to ‘but how do they have sex? there’s no penis’ and trans people to ‘but how do you have sex with them?’ Reducing kinky people to ‘but they have sex like that?’ is pretty much what they’ve done to the entire rest of the queer community anyway. So I don’t love that argument for the same reason I don’t like things like ‘trans people shouldn’t be allowed at pride, because what if parents of gay or lesbian or bisexual kids see those weirdos and drag their kids off’. It seems like it’s missing a very large part of the history of the community as a whole*** in that particular respect.

Last point: i just want to call attention to it, I’m not arguing.

Not because it's shameful, but because it's something that you need to get people's consent to involve them in.” It’s also illegal to have sex in public. It’s indecent exposure in New York, my home state, and it’s classified as a misdemeanor in many others****. So, you’re definitely not wrong there.

However, there’s a difference between performing sex acts and making it clear you engage in them without actually having sex. There are a lot of posts around talking about people walking around wearing nothing but pasties over their nipples and thongs and nothing else, or people wearing shirts explicitly talking about sex, or whatever. If you google “pride NYC,” which is what I did because i didnt want to just google “pride parade” and get a ton of canned stock images, you see a lot of pictures of half-naked individuals wearing rainbows. I don’t think that if those people are perfectly alright to do that (and i do believe it should be allowed for people to do so! Pride is for having fun and being proud of your sexuality, so that kind of thing being policed would be a little weird to me) someone wearing a puppy mask or a leash and collar are also just following the trend in their own way. People making sexual assumptions about someone because they’re dressing in a sexual manner or wearing things that imply sexual actions are the ones making those assumptions. The people wearing those things could have chosen not to, but I don’t think they should be barred for choosing to wear them.

Again, I’m not sure I covered everything, so feel free to point it out if I fucked something up, and I also am not sure any of this is going to make even a little bit of sense to anyone that’s not me, lol, so if this is a whole bunch of completely confusing ramblings, feel free to let me know and I’ll take another stab at it tomorrow when my head hopefully feels less foggy.

*And I might have been wrong. I’m not discounting that. I can be wrong, I’m only human, and my understanding of things might not be 100% accurate.

**By this I mean like the difference between calling someone Daddy (overtly kinky overtones because it’s become a wildly popular thing in media) vs things like asking for permission for small things or waiting for their Dom to give them a go ahead before taking an action, which is more inherently kinky than just using a title (in my opinion, again, this is all in my opinion) but tends to just strike as a little weird

***i wasn’t around for very much of it. I was born in 2001. But I’ve spent a long time following a bunch of angry older folks on here who every now and again go ‘wow you guys clearly dont remember what it was like in the 80s/90s/are being incredibly reductive, read these pieces from the 50s and 60s’, and I feel like i have a slightly better view on some of these things than a lot of the people I see on here. Naturally, though, I might be wrong about parts, and if I’m misrepresenting something, feel free to send me reading materials

Disunion X Reunion

Pam watched Trash Hulk lazily stroll to the front wall of the ballroom. His confidence fed her fury. He apparently knew they’d been caught off guard, and now he was arrogant enough to show Pam his back. She used the ground spike at the flag’s base to plant it in the center of the room, then took her axe in both hands. Her prey seemed unconcerned, and instead of preparing for a fight he crossed his arms and callously studied the window.

G.A.R.F.I.E.L.D. hurried to her side. “Pam, we can leave immediately,” he whispered. His claw grasped the wooden flagpole as he said, “This is all I need to jump to the next world. Let’s go.” The urgency in his voice was uncomfortably sincere. She looked into his optical sensors. Despite his effort remain emotionless, she detected concern that did not seem to be for himself.

“That’s right darling, keep running,” murmured Trash Hulk, still facing away. “Look how well it’s worked for you.” Pam would have broken into a charge had G.A.R.F.I.E.L.D. not gingerly placed his other hand on her shoulder.

“Pam, please.” This time, a quiver in the robot’s voice. “You don’t have to do this now.”

She shrugged his hands off, causing him to stumble back toward Christopher and Junker. She didn’t want their worry. With a rapid motion Pam leapt at her ex-husband, swinging the axe to cleave him in twain. Right before the blade made contact, she sensed an unnatural energy. It felt like the same aura that unnerved her in Skyrim. This not Hulk’s doing. Fuck.

Now he had turned to look at her, preventing his demise by grabbing the axe right at its shoulder, which a recent Google taught me is what you call the part of an axe right below its head. Pam could properly see his features. The mustache, the balding hairline with sideburns that’d shame a Civil War general, the weathered scars dividing his face into three unequal fractions- it was unmistakably him. Yet behind his hazy blue eyes stirred new purpose, an external hunger like that of a lioness who chases a deer through the forest and over rivers, herding it toward its pride. Hulk had never been half as strong as Pam before his death. Only one person could have so fundamentally altered this man.

“Why Todd send you here?” she snarled.

He chuckled. “What makes you think I didn’t follow of my own free will?” Pam wrenched the axe from his grasp and took another swing. He sidestepped it with uncharacteristic deftness, then grabbed her arm. Hard. A searing pain shot through the limb and her vision flashed green. “I wanted to see my wife again.” She brought her boot down on his foot with force enough to flatten a car, giving her time to pull away to the other side of the ballroom.

Recognizing the not-great situation going down, Chris and G.A.R.F.I.E.L.D. charged Trash Hulk simultaneously. The Pebble’s long arms allowed him to graze their target’s chest, but his brittle bones shattered on contact. Hulk pulled the Pebble above his head to shield himself from the khajiit’s overhead pounce, leaving them both a crumpled pile next to the flag. The Junker just watched, mumbling Psalms to calm his nerves.

Pam’s breath came harsh and fast. She shouldn’t have been able to feel pain at all, yet the place where he grabbed her still burned. If the Creator had somehow altered him to override her coding, this fight could prove short and costly. “I thought husband was brave enough to accept death, not beg for life and betray me.”

He responded with a blindingly fast punch that she barely blocked with the axe, sending her sliding against the stone wall. She dropped the now-dented weapon and threw her own fist, hitting his jaw with a satisfying smack. He caught her next blow as she caught his. They pushed against each other, both unable to force their partner to yield. Hulk brought his bald forehead centimeters away from Pam’s furrowed brow. “Don’t you dare talk about betrayal to me,” he growled. There was a sickness in his words. “I know about the robot. And the radroach.” His body shook with each deliberate syllable. “Todd may have taken them, but I came to him willingly.” A green mist clouded Pam’s eyes once more. “Because you are mine.”

She felt a wave of nausea, followed by sorrow. The Hulk she knew was long gone, replaced by the Creator’s mad desire to reclaim her. Todd had turned Trash Hulk’s envy into a physical illness. His paranoid ideas infected his mind, polluted his thoughts. The disease, left untreated, stole away his tongue, then his body, then his integrity. She thought that by escaping from her old world she could forget her past. But that’s the thing about obsessive exes. Ex-boyfriends, ex-husbands, even ex-gods. Sometimes, they won’t let you leave the past. Sometimes you love them too much to see the warning signs, to see that all they want is to keep you in the past, to make sure any fragment of your future is a picture they can jam in their scrapbook.

Trash Hulk seized this moment of weakness. He shoved a knee into Pam’s stomach, causing her to double over. A subsequent kick skittered her across the floor into a marble pillar. Small, thin cracks raced up the column as fire coursed up her spine. She groaned as she pushed up from the floor and willed her legs to stop shaking. Neither Todd nor Hulk earned this pain from her. She would use it against them. She balled her hands into fists. The ground beneath her grew hot. Before Hulk’s smug grin had time to change he was hiding behind his forearms while Pam converted anger into energy, smashing limbs with knuckles, scorching flesh with every blow. She became a furnace fueled by hatred for those who had robbed her of the chance to start over. Any average demigod or unholy spirit should have been reduced to ashy memory.

Sadly Trash Hulk, while neither sacred nor profane, had been chosen specifically to test Pam. Each fiery punch weakened in its intensity. For the first time in ages, she felt tired. When her arms no longer obeyed, she stepped back from the man she’d forced to a kneeling position. Somehow he remained, his face bearing a look of grim resolve. He lifted his battered body to stand before her. He pointed a finger at the stained glass window. The light became distorted, reds and yellows darkening into blues and greens. Dust whipped up in a whirlwind that consumed the whole chamber. The glass seemed to ripple like the surface of a lake disturbed by a particularly large stone. It bathed the five monsters in emerald light, which would have been kind of nice under difference circumstances.

“I’m taking you through there,” Trash Hulk stated, his voice steady after the previous outburst. “We’re going home together Pam. You don’t belong here.” He walked toward her with measured steps. She backed away but felt her strength failing. Hulk’s poisoned words sapped her energy. They were true. Hearing the truth often sucks, and in this case it literally sucked Pam’s inherent power into the portal. Unacceptable.

“You can’t decide where I go” she spat. “Or where I belong.”

He scoffed, the syllable thick with condescension. “Who does? You clearly don’t.” Hulk jerked his thumb toward the heap of G.A.R.F.I.E.L.D. and Chris. “When you make your own choices you end up with garbage like them. Believe me, I know about trash.” He was now mere feet away. His voice grew louder as he reflected on their old life. “It’s going to be just like before. We’ll be happy again.”

“Do not lecture about happiness. You not know about Pam’s happiness.”

He stopped. “I’ve changed.” His voice wavered.

“Don’t be stupid.” Pam’s vision blurred. Soon all her energy would be gone, stolen by cheat codes meant to contain her. “No one ever changes.” She fell on her hands, fighting to stay conscious. She felt like an empty Capri Sun, crinkled and disposable. Hulk offered her his right hand. He smiled. For a moment, she thought there might be kindness behind his eyes. They’d had good memories, right? Shopping for their house in a nice little cul-de-sac. Wallpapering the room where their newborn son would sleep. He got so frustrated with the new laundry machine; it was adorable.

That was all in the past. Before the war, before the ghosts, before the flood that blotted out all of space and time. Nothing behind the eyes now but emerald green coded by a vengeful, possessive god. She was not going back.

With as much strength as she could muster Pam pushed herself up into his chest, hoping to crack his sternum with her skull. They both stumbled back to the center. Hulk’s right hand was still reaching, but now with intent to crush her limbs. She grasped the only weapon within reach, the Witch’s flag, still standing in the middle of their wild dance. She wrenched it from the floor and stabbed the tail spike just below his thumb, shearing through his wrist bones and leaving the hand hanging by a scant number of ulnar ligaments. He howled.

The scream was enough to shake G.A.R.F.I.E.L.D. from his stupor. Optics came back online, revealing a severely weakened Pam and completely unresponsive Pebble. Ambulatory system scan reported ten percent functionality. Not quite enough to be useful. He looked over at Chris again. The clone’s face was scrunched into a pained grimace, respirations came at irregular intervals. Trash Hulk had only hit them once, but such was his strength that he’d left Chris in a serious state. G.A.R.F.I.E.L.D. had to say something.

“Pam. Please.” She almost didn’t hear the khajiit’s whisper. “Can we go?”

She used the flag as a crutch, turned away from the still-wailing Hulk, and limped over to the fallen cat. She didn’t realize how badly he’d been hurt. Her stomach tightened. G.A.R.F.I.E.L.D. managed to lift a paw to her knee. She took it in her own shaky hand.

“Yeah.”

Then they heard the snapping of bone and a yelp. Pam felt warm blood splatter her dress, but felt no injury. She looked over her shoulder to see Junker’s silhouette impaled by five long, green, spectral fingers. Trash Hulk apparently had torn the rest of his hand off and used Pam’s stolen energy to create a new one from pure energy. He had attempted to seize Pam once more, but-

“Green boy…you…save me?”

The yokel chortled feebly. “Well ma’am, the good book says there ain’t no greater love than to lay down one’s life fer a friend. So, here I am!” Blood poured from his mouth. He coughed a little.

“Keep on truckin’ Pam.”

Trash Hulk growled and slid the body off his magic fingers. The trio vanished before Junker hit the ground.

Virginia Tech vs. West Virginia was so good, it overcame FedEx Field itself

When you put an amazing college rivalry game into an awful NFL stadium, the “amazing college rivalry” part wins out.

LANDOVER, Md. — Metro D.C. was the site of Appalachian football’s biggest family reunion Sunday. Virginia Tech and West Virginia have sizable Washington alumni bases, so I don’t know how many of the masses that poured into FedEx Field were already here and how many had trekked from the hours-wide rural radius around us.

FedEx Field is not a nice stadium. Few Washington fans would tell you it is, and Dan Snyder’s been trying to get taxpayers to help him build him a new one. Its concourses are cramped and dark, and I thought they smelled heavily of human urine by halftime.

But if you put No. 21 Tech and No. 22 WVU in the same building for the first time in 12 years, in a region that’s loaded with both of their fans, you’ll get a fun time.

We definitely did get a fun time. If not for UCLA’s massive, fake-spike-aided comeback on Texas A&M at the same time, it might’ve been the best game of Week 1.

What’s certain is that D.C. traffic is bad on any day, and it’s extra bad on football Sundays, and it’s especially bad when neither team is from the metro and extra cars and RVs are filling up the concrete donut that surrounds this stadium. I got out out of my Uber and walked the last mile to the field, and on my way, I was offered beer by people still sitting in traffic. Others got out of their cars and drank Bud Lights in the roadways. Most of those hearty souls were in blue and gold.

The logjam led to a perverse scene. Four hours before kickoff, the lots surrounding this stadium — three and a half hours from Morgantown, four and a half from Blacksburg — were nearly empty. Many were still trying to get off the Capital Beltway, with thousands backed up at exit 16, a mile and a half away. Closer to the stadium, the bottleneck at the entrance to the FedEx tailgating lots was next-level.

This is a football stadium surrounded by massive parking lots, with exactly four thin access roads providing traffic oxygen to a stadium that seats 82,000.

Breaking: There was traffic outside a big football game. More at 11. It was extensive, though.

This could’ve been a beautiful, chaotic mess of a tailgating scene, and it was in spots. But the travel situation inhibited it. With 150 minutes before kickoff, legions of tailgaters were still stuck on the four access roads that service this venue of 82,000 people. That was a shame.

Outside FedEx Field two and a half hours before WVU-Virginia Tech. Some of the lots on the other side of the stadium were more full at this point.

Eventually, the place filled up. It was a good atmosphere, because how couldn’t it be?

WVU and Virginia Tech were playing for the fossil fuel-inspired Black Diamond Trophy, their rivalry grail that’s been collecting dust since the teams last played in 2005.

About 55 minutes before kickoff, WVU fans started doing that chant where one side yells, “Let’s go!” and the other responds, “Mountaineers!” a split-second later. Those continued in the concourses all night. The fans never stopped, even rattling off a sustained “Let’s goooo Mountaineers!” while an Tech player laid injured at the 50 in the fourth quarter.

Tech had a boisterous contingent on hand, too. Confession: I have never been to Lane Stadium, so “Enter Sandman” was awesome to me, even from a somewhat muting press box at a neutral site that clearly isn’t Lane Stadium. They matched their West Virginian neighbors in enthusiasm all night.

Virginia Tech was working in a new quarterback in redshirt freshman Josh Jackson. So was WVU in Florida transfer Will Grier, whom the Mountaineers had throw 53 passes. Dana Holgorsen’s been an air raid guy for a while, but WVU leaned even more on the spread passing game in its first game with new coordinator Jake Spavital.

Grier was bad early: 9 of 16 for 54 yards and a sack in the first quarter. By the end of the night, he was over 370 with solid efficiency numbers to boot. Jackson settled in well in the second half, and the offenses started trading blows. They were at turns tied at 10, 17, and 24. Players kept crumbling to the turf with apparent cramps, but other than that, the game just got better, and the crowd just got louder. So did the coaches, with the benches getting warnings and unsportsmanlike flags.

They were almost tied at 31, right at the end.

Tech coach Justin Fuente sent out a kicker who’d already missed from 38 to try a 32-yard field goal that would’ve iced it on a fourth-and-1-with two minutes left, but Joey Slye missed again.

Grier took the ball and drove 65 yards. He needed 80, though, and he almost got them. WVU’s David Sills V, who had two TDs already, had the tying one bounce off him.

Final: 31-24, Hokies. Frank Beamer cradled the fossil fuel.

The rivalry renewal was a big part of this game’s story.

The teams brought a 51-game history and a trophy into this game, but 2005 isn’t recent. If you’re on the younger side, maybe the series doesn’t mean much. The teams play again in 2021 in Morgantown and 2022 in Blacksburg, but the series might die again after that.

I really missed the heyday, didn’t I? I’m going to tell you, I’m having a hard time getting more than your normal amount of interested in the season opener against the Mountaineers. Call it naiveté, inexperience, incompetence, call it whatever, but I come from a generation of fandom that doesn’t remember West Virginia as an opponent, let alone a rival of such built-up magnitude. I hear all these platitudes, I see all these highlights, and there’s an empty spot in my experience where I suppose that pride and/or indignation should be.

That was tangible in Landover. The teams’ crowds weren’t nice to each other, but if there was violent hostility beyond the norm, it was well-hidden.

When Tech gathered at midfield to collect the Black Diamond Trophy, which it’s owned since 2005 anyway, the vast majority of its fans had already gone.

Maybe those fans left because they don’t care about the Black Diamond Trophy, or because this rivalry is no longer meaningful after 12 years off. More likely, they left because it takes hours to get out of the damn parking lot.

Damago-From reading the comments it's good in a way. If your religious beliefs don't practice or celebrate homosexuality then the law should not MAKE you do it. Gay people need to eat if they go to a restaurant or need medical attention at a hospital and they're being turned away because they're gay then that's violating HUMAN RIGHTS not gay rights. I have a problem with them using the ACLU to force businesses to make gay wedding cakes or take pictures that they shouldn't have to. If it is THAT serious have other businesses that are open to doing things like that. For one business that does not promote homosexuality, then allow a business that does.
