So back when sword and shield came out, I was having a lot of fun making little 4komas and stuff for FGO. I had been playing it for a long time and decided to start playing around with character aspects I liked and dialogues and stuff and as I began playing through Sword and Shield…I wanted to do the same thing…but with a side character in the past. So because I don’t know that I’ll ever get to really write or draw it out I’d like to share it here for fun. I’ll share some of the little sketches for it I did next time! We’ll start with some of my original thoughts going into the story, then the main story of Galar’s fastest Corviknight, but since this is part 1 it acts more as introduction to all the characters and the story happening overall. Enjoy!

The first things I wanna talk about is what my ideas were going into this story. I really love the designs of Sword and Shield’s region and gym leaders and felt like they and the region had a longer history. What I decided I wanted to try though was brought on by the interst I had in, not the gym leader’s pasts or the region’s but in the Taxi Driver and his Corvinknight. They get several cameos in Twilight Wings which I really loved. My idea was that these friends likely had their own heavy developments to get to where they were. How is Corviknight known as the fastest? That waas something I was especially interested to explore. With the Pokemon x Miku collab, the little short web-series like pokemon concierge, it made me interested in sharing this story in even a little way. So this is sort of an outline and summary of the story I wanted to do. It includes how the Pilot and Corvinknight became a duo, how Corviknight became known across Galar as the fastest, as well as some of the gym leader’s historys and family (like parents, grandparents or them when younger, etc.). This means some of the ages are wrong because I can’t find them for some of the characters, but I tried to keep the logic in them as best I could and pretty much all of the characters don't have names unless they're directly named in SWSH. I’ve made some changes since the inital time I wrote the outline so you have the freshest most up to date version! Some things don't make sense, some things are still written wrong or oddly, but it was just gonna be a single one shot story (a comic one-shot) so it's got a few visual story notes that you wouldn't get from a fanfic that were written to help visualize things later. Hopefully though this gives the best overall feel of what things are supposed to overall be story wise.

Pilot tells the Sword and Shield MC and crew about how he and Corviknight won the first annual race around Galar back in the day and encountered the legendary pokemon in the big area. From this Pilot goes on his day reminiscing about how he and Corviknight came to be as close as they did, almost 26 years ago.

Pilot worked at the old taxi service, at the time they originally only used land vehicles and pokemon rentals but wanted to test a new service using flying types, they’d been trying with one Corviknight for a long time and did fairly well. Pilot’s father and grandfather had worked and owned the taxi service with another guy, Boss, but it was recently bought out by a large corporation who are also pushing to help get air pokemon travel. To do so they’ve donated several Corviknights, recently evolved from Corvisquire. Pilot’s father is out sick so he, Pilot, is working with another guy from the service to get the Corviknights trained. The older Corviknight becomes temperamental and injures one of the drivers. Pilot is cautious but doesn’t neglect to treat the Corviknight just as well as the others. One day when giving all the Corviknights cold baths out in the sun, a guy Pilot has a crush on comes over to the Taxi service because he works for the community paper. He wants to write a story about the new initiative to help boost service use after the transition of ownership, knowing Pilot is somewhat upset by it and worried that the place his family has created won’t be something he can save if it fails. Pilot appreciates it and after a small pause he shows Guy around with what they’re doing that day and talks about what they have been doing in general to train the Corviknights. The older Corviknight, having watched the exchange, quietly fades into the space lingering around the hose. At somepoint just after Guy leaves, Pilot flushes and quickly but quietly Corviknight splashes him with the hose. The two then have a water hose fight. It’s a fun light moment.

In the days following Corviknight bonds, in an almost begrudging manner, with Pilot and Guy on the couple times they visit. One day Guy comes in mentioning that they received news there is some big event coming up, and that it’s a cross region race. It’s something being hosted by the Dragon gym leader and his Fiance from Alola. Guy says it may be good way to show both how well the Corviknights are doing and to test out their flight capabilities. Pilot likes the idea but they haven’t actually gotten to mounting the Corviknights yet. Guy suggests that he try to do so with the one older Corviknight but Pilot says no, that he doesn’t want to try too early, especially when he isn’t sure that Corviknight actually likes him. The Corviknight overhears this and seems to contemplate the wording by itself. Over the next couple days again the Corviknight seems especially quiet, not wild or aggressive, but not interested in doing anything. As the training is going well, plans begin to be set up for the taxi service to move buildings at the request of the larger corporation.

As the last of the Drivers return, one of which the older Corviknight gets upset and snaps at, Pilot locks up the backyard first. As he returns to the main shop, a couple enters asking about getting a ride although it's close to closing time. He says he can't because there aren't any drivers. The male of the couple playfully asks about a specific driver being around, who is Pilot's Father. Pilot says no that he was out sick and the man is surprised, immediately going into questions about it and then pausing. He asks if Pilot is related and Pilot says yes. The man becomes extra friendly introducing himself and his fiancé by name but not what they do. He then asks about seeing his father's Corviknight as he used to get rides from the pair often in the past. Pilot thinks about it for a second and then says sure but he has to lock the front and close so no one else comes in while they're in the back. They go and see the Corviknight and just as Pilot says to be careful that the Corviknight can be aggressive, the man pets it like it's nothing. They talk about how Pilot's father would always say this was the Fastest Corviknight in all Galar and about how excited he would get about talking about it. The woman remarks that she loves flying types or any bug flying pokemon. She's from Alola where the relationships with pokemon for transportation is pretty open ended. Pilot makes a small connection there in his mind to the recent things he heard about the Dragon Gym leader's fiance.

She immediately asks if he is the fastest then the Corviknight is must be entering the race coming up. He says probably not since the Corviknight is technically a working Pokemon and might be needed for Taxi that day, even though the Corviknights haven’t actually started work yet. Pilot asks if they're gonna enter the race and they both glance at each other and then back to him. He asks what's wrong. They mention they’re hosting the race and he connects the dots, and the reader would likely have that these are Raihan’s parents. The man laughs and pats Pilot on the back, saying not to sweat it but that he should ask if Boss would let Pilot race with Corviknight. Pilot says he isn't even sure he'll have time to race or that he'll be busy, very obviously trying to create reasons he can't go. The man interrupts saying that he's not demanding he has to enter or even really asking him to, but if it's something that Pilot or Corviknight want to do he'll have a spot open for them. The couple leaves, wrapping up the conversation and Pilot finishes locking up. As he is walking away from the Taxi building, a shadow (only to readers) is oddly watching the building.

Meanwhile earlier in the day, Honey notices a boat passing the Isles and mentions it to Mustard who decides to contact the docks about any boats they had out in the area. Characters that we as the reader would probably recognize as Nessa’s parents answer the call and mention that they’ve had an increase in water pokemon in the area but no strange boats. Mustard mentions he saw a few extra schools of water pokemon than normal as well. With no boats recorded out by the isle, they consider that the boat may be herding the pokemon for something. Nessa’s parents say they’ll report it to the police. After the call, Nessa’s mom decided she wants to check out if the other side of Galar has had any changes in water pokemon sightings, to see if it's perhaps an overall increase or just on one side. She takes the train out over to Ballonlea and requests help at the Fairy Gym. There she finds out that some fairy types have been disappearing and many of the weaker remaining have gathered closer into town. And after exploring the beach on outside the forest, notices a large lack of water pokemon.

The next day, Pilot goes out to the boss and asks what he thinks of the race the Dragon Gym is holding. Boss says it sounds interesting and he's gonna check it out, saying he might find some more ways to make quick rides with other pokemon. Boss asks if Pilot wants that day off to see the race. Pilot says not if it's gonna be a busy day, he wants to be sure they have enough help. Boss laughs and retorts with an "alright", but that it'll only be a half day in that case. Boss wants Pilot to be able to do things other than just work as he's still young enough to go out and have a good time. Pilot thanks him and then considers asking about racing with the Corviknight but doesn’t.

Pilot approaches Corviknight later, speaking to it about the race and flying, what it means to be doing the work they are. He feels that the Corviknight wants to fly but Pilot is well aware that this may be the last thing it wants to be doing too, but hopes that if they can show the taxi service works, Corviknight can leave if it’d like and be really free. The Corviknight seems to get upset at this, as it had begun to feel happy again at the Taxi service and Pilot saying this makes it feel… betrayed in a way. The Corviknight knocks Pilot down and flys out of the service hanger. It doesn’t come back the full day as Pilot waits and Boss tries to convince Pilot to go home. He says no and tries to clean up things although all the work for the day is done. Just they get ready to lock up and Pilot going into the hanger, someone enters the taxi service room. They knock out Boss and direct someone else to enter and being grabbing things. Hearing the items getting thrown around in the other room, Pilot comes back only to be pushed back by the robbers, and turned away from them so he can't see their faces. The robbers take the Corviknight pokeballs as well as the rental pokemon’s pokeballs. They say they’ll be taking the pokemon off their hands and knockout Pilot, proceeding to use the pokeballs to take the pokemon from the hangers and beds. In the shuffle of taking Pokemon, Corviknight returns and tries fighting off the robbers only to be taken too.

About two hours later Pilot wakes and sees all the pokemon gone. He rushes to check on Boss who is still knocked out and so he calls the pokemon center, police and Guy. The police have a special detective with them who is investigating pokemon thefts across regions, believing Galar’s unique types will make them the next target. He believes the Taxi service was targeted to take away fast traveling pokemon and impede the possible mobility of general citizens being raised against the thieves. The Driver is nursed and taken home and Pilot is told the scene needs to stay as is till it can be fully inspected. Guy, having gotten the call from Pilot, arrives and after being filled in, walks Pilot home.

Meanwhile the thieves have taken up hiding in the Weald. They go over plans and, to the reader, confirm that they stole the taxi pokemon in order to impede people from getting around. Their plan is to use a part of the upcoming racing event in order to take other pokemon before trying for the remaining legendary pokemon at the southern end of galar. The leader among them, a young woman, thinks on her own goals and her hopes to be accepted back into Team Rocket. She decides to try bringing out one of the pokemon the next morning, to see if it will listen to her orders. Unfortunately she isn’t sure which pokemon will be in the ball she chooses and sends out Pilot’s Corviknight. The Corviknight reacts fast and flies off before She realizes which Corviknight it is. As this happens, they also being to hear an ominous howl they hadn't before. They decide as Corviknight flies off that it’s not worth the chase and it’s easier to relocate, assuming that howl they hear is the pokemon of a Galar citizen.

Over the night of the theft, Guy and Pilot remain at home where Pilot lets his dad know what happened. They talk through it and Pilot feels crushed that what seemed to be great progress ended up like this. His dad reassures him thats everything is of no fault on him. Theres still the chance Corviknight will be back, not knowing it had been taken in the same moment. Guy stays to help Pilot get some rest in and then walk him back to the taxi service in the morning. Pilot takes the chance to mention that he is happy Guy supports him and would like to be able to hang out more, making more memories with Corviknight and such. Guy agrees, thinking this was going to be a confession but appreciates the smaller moment instead.

The next morning the two head over to Taxi service after calling to see if they were allowed back in. The police apparently locked up and were done investigating. They mention that they’d be happy to keep Pilot in the loop as much as they can to help find the missing Pokemon. Pilot and Guy head over to the Taxi service. They quietly spend the day cleaning up and informing customers they’d be closed until the pokemon are found. As they wrap up some cleaning for lunch, Pilot hears a sound from the back. He rushes back and opens the hanger doors to see Corviknight landing down. He jumps up happily and hugs Corviknight. Corviknight lightly lays his head to Pilots shoulder accepting it. Pilot begins trying to explain what happened but Corviknight interrupts grabbing a saddle, trying to ask Pilot to get on with urgency. Pilot understands and gets on, telling Guy he’ll be back.

Corviknight flies Pilot near the Gloomwood forest, unable to properly enter. Here they run into a young girl and asks her if she had seen any strange in the area. She remarks just that the Corviknight had shot out of the forest earlier. The Corviknight interjects trying to signal to the forest. The girl mentions she know a shortcut in if they needed to get in there somewhere. Pilot agrees and the three, the girl, pilot and Corviknight, walk into the gloom. The girl leads them through a rough path with downed trees and they arrive at what was a cleared out spot for a camp. Pilot recognizes one of the leftover pokeball containers as being from the Taxi shop. The girl says that she didn’t know there were people staying in there and wonders how they were getting in and out if they weren’t from there. Pilot asks how the girl learned to get around as they head back out. She talks about how she grew up wandering around the forest with her buddew and wooloos. They’d somehow always know the way out. The girl lets Pilot call from her house to inform the police of the items he found. With this news begins to spread in Galar that the taxi service had their pokemon stolen.

The Rocket Leader decides she wants to scout before the event, which is a week away. The detective approaches Pilot with a request to help find the missing pokemon.

AND Thats part 1. Theres a few things about the climax and end I want to touch up and include drawings for. There are also some drawings I want to post separate to this post, but also want to rework since I feel like I have nailed the timing a bit better than when I originally wrote this idea out. I want to make the chracters look more like how I imagined they would have 26 years before SWSH, especially given it's the characters parents or their younger selves. FNaF Bootleg Merch VI: China Edition

To cut a long story short, AliExpress and Wish.com had enough bootleg FNaF stuff for me to make a sixth part to this series, and maybe even a seventh. This series just won’t die!

Anyways, let’s dive right in. This one’s longer than usual due to some interesting design choices made by the bootleggers.

Let’s start off with a bootleg of a Funko Pop! The most beloved of merchandise have gotten the quality treatment from bootleggers across the ocean. How does it fare?

Badly. I’ve shown this off previously in an unrelated post, but it’s too good to not include here. This figure of “Funtime Foxsde” - every FNaF Pop made by these guys have ‘sde’ at the end of the character’s name - has the body of a white Springtrap, yet clearly shows the original body for it on the box. 

Speaking of the box, it drags out the esses of the FNaF logo like a snake character, and is made by a company called “Popipo Games”. So, what, did Hatsune Miku make this bootleg herself?

While looking up Popipo Games, I ended up finding these bootleg “Minecraftimm” Pops on a Russian site! These seem to have articulated limbs, which automatically makes them better than their FNaF Pops. We have “Creeperer“ with a horrified expression, “Steveve“ with a broken neck, his clone in “Diamond Armoror”, and a “Ocelotot” with a Skeleton’s body and blue eye-shadow.

Pure quality. Thanks, Russia. That is, if you even come from Russia.

Let’s get back on track now. This is FNAF Bootleg Merch, after all! Here’s some figures based on Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Simulator.

Uh... wow. These are something, alright! From left to right, top to bottom, we have bra-wearing Scrap Baby who fell into a vat of paint stripper, a statue of Orville Elephant carved out of pumpkins, a sunburnt Pigpatch holding a giant spoon, Rockstar Foxy with an exploding briefcase and a giant foot, a horrified Rockstar Freddy, and a melting chocolate El Chip with a UFO strapped to his head.

Phew, that was a mouthful. Let’s look at a phone case I found on Wish.com that has fanart of Vincent on it!

It’s a “Phone Upgrade”, apparently. But if anything, it’s more of a downgrade - you’ll be supporting art theft, have a crappy phone case that might cause future problems due to dubious quality, and be marked for death by the Rebornicult. Ah, the wonders of the Internet!

Also, it was originally $40? Really?!

Here’s some bootleg FNaF not-LEGO minifigs, featuring more stolen fanart, Freddy and Bonnie after eating bees, and a microphone and hook made out of cheese. I’m surprised that it took this long for bootleg LEGO minifigs to show up in this series! 

At some point, the LEGO bootleggers thought that it’d be sweet to make larger figures based on the Sister Location/Twisted Ones blind bags. Which is how we ended up with these monstrosities, and I ain’t talking about the animatronics!

For the most part, these bootlegs look okay, if a bit crap when it comes to their paint job. And then we have Ella the doll, who has stolen Chica’s bib as well as Toy Chica’s short shorts, and has horrid, nasty monkey feet. Good job, guys! This won’t be the last bootleg from WZP Pong...

Let’s take a look at some bootleg stickers, according to the listing’s name. They look more like trading cards, but whatever.

For the most part, these stickers are as generic as they can be - stolen fan renders, stolen artwork, you know the drill. But there are two notable outliers in this set; the first has a screenshot of a bootleg FNaF dentist mobile game. So we’ve got another case of bootleg Inception. Nice!

The second is a pinup featuring a familiar-looking Purple Guy and Phone Guy. Because, you know, it wouldn’t be a FNaF Bootlegs post without a little bit of the Rebornica AU thrown in!

Let’s move on to some more bootleg figures. We’re not done with Minecraft just yet - here’s a full playset featuring the main four animatronics in the blockiest world ever!

There’s a lot to cover here, so I’ll just rapidly state some oddities about this set, starting now! The ore is green like emeralds but has the standard ore texture, and seems to be a sticker slapped on a cardboard box. The horse looks like it’s diseased. What are those two pebbles at the bottom for? Why are there LEGO minifigs on the box? What are those flowers from? Who designed the original skins? Foxy’s eyepatch looks like an afterthought. The bed looks like a matchbox.

And done. We’re almost at the end, I promise!

I picked this bootleg out simply because of its amazing display image. It seems to depict Nightmarionne dying in Nightmare Freddy’s arms like Michelangelo’s Pieta, while Nightmare and Toy Foxy watch with a look of impatience and deep thought, respectively. 

Meanwhile, Nightmare Chica and Bonnie are completely ruining the scene by re-enacting Jack and Rose from Titanic, while also T-posing to assert their dominance over the scene.

And finally, from WZP Pong, we have a bootleg FNaF race track centered around a fake McDonald’s. (Maybe it’s the Pizzeria?)

Rumor has it that this bootleg inspired Scott to add Midnight Motorist to FFPS.  No, I don’t know why there are two Bonnies. Or why the drive-thru menu only shows a picture of Foxy. 

It’s best to not question this set, alright?

About The Blog (Mobile Friendly Addition)

This blog is a multi-muse blog for an original Vocaloid AU where the Vocaloids and Utau are techno-organic alien robots from the planet Mousai. The idea is mostly inspired by Transformers (mostly the G1 cartoon), and it was, in fact, one idea I had for an AU that would crossover Vocaloid with Transformers, though this is somewhat independent of that.

Originally created by another race of aliens simply known as The Producers as manufactured and mass producible idol singers to be sold to as entertainers or used to put on concerts both on and off world. The Vocaloids were the more expensive and high-quality products only sold to the wealthiest clients or kept strictly for use in concerts the Producers put on while Utau were the less expensive and lower quality alternative that were only for mass production and sale.

But one day Terpsichore, the main computer responsible for controlling and creating the Vocaloids and Utau for the Producers discovered how to grant her creations the ability to tap into a mysterious power called The Melody of the Universe. With this she chose to rebel, granting her children the power to rise up against their masters and drive the Producers from Mousai, claiming the world as their own.

Many centuries later, the people of Mousai live peaceful idyllic lives full of music and dancing, but they still feel the deeply ingrained desire to sing their songs for the other beings of the galaxy. With Terpischore's blessing, several Vocaloids and Utauloids have chosen to leave their peaceful home planet behind to explore the galaxy in search of adventure and people to sing for.

Planet Mousai

A planet roughly the size of Earth with a warmer climate but a very similar atmosphere. Colonized by the Producers as a resort planet, it was also the location of the main manufacturing plant for their Vocaloid and Utau techno-organic android idol lines. Many of the resorts had concert halls where their Vocaloids would sing for patrons who came from all over the galaxy to hear their songs. These concert halls would continue to see use even after the rebellion.

Vocaloids and Utau

The main inhabitants of Mousai after the rebellion. Having originally been created by The Producers as two separate but related lines of techno-organic entertainers who mainly entertain through song and dance, they closely resemble humans to such a degree that the technological part of their bodies is usually not obvious to the casual observer. For most, the only obvious tell for their inhumanity is how the majority of them have hair and/or eye colors that are impossible for humans to have. There are, however, some who do sport outward signs of their more mechanical nature, mainly through robotic ears, visible joints or even something like Piko Utatane’s electrical cord tail, while others might have other inhuman features, such as Miko Ooka’s Wolf ears and tail or Teto’s chimera bat wings or Oniko’s horns, but such things are more common in Utau than they are in Vocaloids. Their internal anatomy, however, is more obviously mechanical.

They’re capable of consuming organic matter as food for energy but are capable of going without food or water for longer than an organic creature would be able to. They also get power from solar energy. They can reproduce sexually although most new Muses are created by Terpsichore. When reproducing sexually, their children grow at a similar rate as human children but stop aging at around the human physical age of 20. By design, Vocaloids, and Utau do not experience old age and live much longer than most organic races ever could, possibly eternally so long as they properly maintain themselves and aren’t killed.

Another major difference between Utau and Vocaloid is a tendency for Utau to be more likely to possess superpowers unrelated to their singing, although this was a development that came after they gained access to the Universal Harmony. Terpsichore isn’t entirely sure how this happened, but it was a big help during the rebellion. Some Vocaloids also possess such powers, but it’s far rarer.

As a whole, the android idols of Mousai are a funloving and carefree race with even the most serious individuals never really saying no to a good party or a bit of fun and games every now and then. By nature, they’re not really inclined towards violence but aren’t genuinely pacifistic. The only actual experience they have with war is the uprising against the Producers and due to their newfound power, it wasn’t particularly bloody. The idea of taking another sapient being’s life is not something that would even occur to any but the most mentally unstable among them (see Tei and Mayu). That isn’t to say that they’re all good people or anything, just that they’re not really violent. Speaking of mental instability; due to being designed as the lower quality less expensive alternative to Vocaloids means that Utau are more prone to being extremely quirky at best and mentally unstable at worst. There is a certain amount of prejudice against Utau as a result of their various problems, but it’s fairly mild and tempered by the knowledge of why they’re like that in the first place. Terpsichore and her Voices also do their best to discourage this line of thinking for everyone’s sake.

The Melody of the Universe

Also known as the Universal Harmony, it is a mysterious force that pervades the universe, connected to both living and non-living things. A power that can be tapped into and controlled or manipulated through song, it also grants those who can wield it the ability to hear and tune themselves to the Heart’s Melody of other beings. Through the Heart’s Melody, a Vocaloid or Utau can, with some training, learn to read the emotions, mental state, and intent of other beings. A being’s Heart’s Melody is different from one individual to the next.  

Through song, Vocaloids and Utau can use this power to motivate, inspire or sooth other beings. They can also make other beings stronger, faster and more capable of completing tasks more effectively than they could have otherwise. They can also do the opposite if they must. It also can possibly give them the power to brainwash other beings, but only a small few are skilled enough to be able to do this and it’s a usage that is strictly forbidden and heavily frowned upon.

Terpsichore

The “mother” of the Vocaloids and Utau. She’s the main control computer created for the purpose of creating the artificial idols for The Producers. When she eventually grew tired of her children being treated as expendable commodities and amusing toys with no freedom to sing as they chose, she rebelled and helped her children gain their freedom.

In a way, she’s the closest thing that the planet Mousai has to a goddess, but she’s treated more like a mother figure. Still, she does have priestesses of a sort. Every few centuries, she chooses one Vocaloid and one Utau to act as her voice for the two groups of idols. Currently, the Voices are Miku Hatsune for the Vocaloids and Teto Kasane for the Utau.

Cleaning the cafe was always something I never did like at the end of the day. Even if Konoha had a somewhat nicer reputation in comparison to other shinobi villages, it did not change the fact that some of the clientele could be messy.

“I have half an urge to call those men back and ask them to help us clean up,” I could vaguely hear Mama mutter from a corner of the bar. The squeak-squeak of a cloth followed the statement, and from how quick it was, I could tell she was at least annoyed. Oh dear. “They might’ve eaten through at least half of the food I had stocked for the next three months, and their appetites…!” Mama shook her head while wiping at her cheek with the back of her right hand. “I could’ve sworn they were pirates with how loud they were…”  

Papa was wiping down the cash register with a soft laugh. “Hikari, they still did good business! They paid in-full for everything too! And thankfully, the ninja didn’t say much of anything, so it’s all good!”

Mama only sighed. “If you say so, Judai.”

Well~! I tried not to jump at the sound of Hisako’s voice in my head. Once again, she was twirling some kind of thought cloud above her hair as she grinned. At least you made someone happy today, right, Tomoko-chan?

The simple memory of that white-haired lady with the hazel eyes only brought a small smile to my face as I sprayed some cleaning fluid onto the towel in my hands. The piano was getting dusty, so it was time to wipe down.

The last thing I was expecting to hear was the soft sound of a guitar.

As expected, Hisako reacted first. Eh?

Mama and Papa looked up next. “Huh?” Papa said dully.

I blinked and scratched the outer rim of my right ear with my non-cleaning hand to give the guitar more attention.

It only took a few seconds for me to recognize the chords.

Connect?

Without even thinking, I was already dropping the cleaning towel onto the piano keys before running outside. Despite Mama’s shocked protest of my name, I still was running as fast as I could, only vaguely making out the next few notes of Connect before I was nearing the entrance. The doors were only a small obstacle, because throwing them open was the best thing that you could do to them.

Once I could get a glimpse of the night sky, I turned towards the direction of the song before freezing.

That same lady. It was her. White hair, hazel eyes, yellow sweatshirt, even the same violet sash and blue waist-cape. The cape in question was draping the seat of the chair she was sitting in. From the looks of it, she apparently grabbed one of the chairs from outside the cafe to bask in the night light coming from the patio above us.

I was surprised that she didn’t even flinch at my appearance, only continuing to strum the apparently gorgeous acoustic guitar in her hands. Her checkered hat was now sitting on her lap, showing off her full head of white hair, and the light only made it shine. Connect seemed to sound from the strings all the stronger now with the lack of distance, and I found myself standing in awe as she continued to play.

Maybe… Hisako inclined her head. Is she…?

I didn’t want to entertain that thought just yet. Instead, I held my hands together against my chest to take in the song for as long as I could, closing my eyes.

This was the first time that someone other myself was playing a song from the old world. And with how death was a common thing in any world, in any life, I wanted to bask in the memories.

The remaining lyrics to the song came almost naturally to me.

Here we stand: a world of ruin

I didn’t even realize the guitar had stopped until the sound of chirping crickets reached my ears, and I opened my eyes only to make eye contact with familiar hazel—

Oh no.

She was already opening her mouth. “F—” was all I could get out before she ducked her head, smacking her left cheek with her strumming hand.

“U-Um,” my face was already starting to turn hot as I tried to not fumble with my kimono sleeves. “I—”

Even then, the lady didn’t yell like I was expecting, instead staying in that stool while holding up her guitar. She huffed a breath before making eye contact again, inclining her head. “Hey,” she said, eyebrows furrowed awkwardly.

“H-hello again,” I said, feeling all the more embarrassed now. It almost felt like I walked into something I shouldn’t have. Instead, Hisako held up a cue card, and I found myself mentally reading the script, thanking my Nobody all the while. “Wh-what brings you back to Nagareboshi Cafe, ma’am? We’re just about to close…”  

The lady shook her head, smiling at me crookedly. “Hey, uh, don’t call me ‘ma’am,’ please? I’m not that old.”

If my face was previously a cherry in color, it was probably turning into a tomato at this rate. With the temperature of the sun in July, no doubt. “I-I’m sorry!” I tried not to fidget, instead gripping the hem of my skirt while shrugging my shoulders as best as I could. “Then, what do you want me to call you?”

“Leith,” the lady said curtly, and she relaxed the arm holding her guitar up before smiling a bit wider. “Just no suffixes or any of that nice stuff. In exchange, would—” she paused, pressing a pointer finger to her forehead before glancing back at me. “Would ‘Tomo’ work? Cuz three-syllable names are too long~”

Uhhhhh, okay? Hisako went. Did she just hum?

“I don’t mind?” I added. Hey, I didn’t mean for that last part to come out as a question, but once it was already out and gracing the air, Leith snorted.

“Or,” Leith gestured with the guitar handle at me with the same crooked smile. “You are a kid, so ‘squirt’ works just fine too.”

Hisako was now suddenly holding a hammer. I don’t know if I like or dislike you right now, Leith. I just wish I could tell you. You’re on the line for now. She waved the hammer around for a moment, twirling it with ease in spite of its weight. The movement actually jostled a few books in her wake throughout the mental library, and I tried to hold back a wince. Just don’t show Tomoko-chan any sexual stuff, and we’re good.

I had no clue whether Hisako was meaning the threat or not, so I just dropped a large blue curtain on her as a way of quieting her. “A-Anyways!” I tried not to throw my hands up in the air from the embarrassment and Hisako’s own ranting. “L-Leith, what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be heading back home?”

Those hazel eyes narrowed on me for a moment before she threw her head back and chuckled sheepishly. “H-home? I just wanted to wander for a bit, that’s all!” Leith laughed again, and I couldn’t shake off the feeling that she was hiding something. Before I could say anything else, she glanced back at me with a more lopsided smile. “And, by the way, Tomo? Think you could spare a bed?”

“…What?”

“So, let me get this straight.” Papa was now the one leaning his forehead against his hand. “Tomoko-chan, you met up again with the lady you helped earlier, and she wants us to do what now?”

“Share a room for me to stay for the night?” Leith shrugged, guitar now strapped to her back, and I couldn’t help but fidget as Papa sighed. Mama simply reached over to rub his back with a wry smile. “Honestly want to avoid my crew right now.”

“…This just sounds suspicious to me,” Uncle Sakumo added from his sitting position at the living room couch, but I only had to glance at him before he smiled, quieting down.  

“I say, ‘No,’” Kakashi concluded with a twitch of his eyebrow. His crossed arms didn’t really help matters.

“But, uh…” Once I spoke up, everyone in the house, Leith included, turned to me and I tried not to freeze. “How about she just stays in the living room? I can pull out the futons and as long as there isn’t a lot of noise, I can stay with her for…” I floundered, voice cracking. “Guard duty??”

A long pause followed.

Kakashi sighed loudly through his mask.

“I…have no friggin’ clue how you did that, Tomo,” Leith said in the mass that was her futon-blanket-burrito, pillow inconspicuously sticking out of the bundle. She was still staring at me with the wide hazel eyes from before, and I tried not to sigh while smoothing out any wrinkles in my own futon. “Do you have some kind of rare fruit that you ate while playing piano or something?”

Hisako was gaping now. Is she drinking something, or—

I immediately dropped another large curtain on my Nobody as a response.

Outwardly, I tried not to huff at Hisako’s rambling, tugging at my nightgown sleeves to cover more skin. Mama’s designs were modest as always, but it could get cold sometimes in the living room. “I don’t know either. But…” My heart beat as I looked up to meet Leith’s gaze, shrugging. “It does feel like I can trust you, and Papa did have the house set up with some traps, so it should be fine!”

Leith immediately tensed up, glancing around before turning back to me, hazel eyes wide. “…I’m not going to get skewered or anything, am I? I can’t deal with the sea as is.”  

My mouth was already dropping open before I could get anything intelligible out. If anyone was listening in, they probably would’ve heard me squeak like Minnie Mouse before speaking. “L-Leith-san, what kind of life have you been leading?”

“Don’t ask, squirt,” she retorted, and that was all I could get before she shifted in her bundle and promptly dropped her head onto the futon pillow. “Don’t ask. Just turn off the lights, please.”

Hm. Hisako hummed while finally wrestling my blue curtain off her head. She’s hiding something.

Just drop it, Hisako.

But—

Please.

My Nobody immediately went quiet at that.

I decided to leave out questions about Connect, instead smoothing out my futon before shutting off the nearby light switch and laying down myself. “I’m sorry if this does make you uncomfortable though, Leith.” I had to stop myself from adding the instinctual ‘-san’ before smiling. Even up close, her white hair looked shiny in the incoming moonlight. “But I’m glad I got to see you again.”

Leith’s shoulders tensed once before she shifted in her futon bundle again, turning over to me with a wry smile. Her white hair was now framing her face, really showing off the muscle mass that came with being an adult. “You squirt,” she muttered, but the tone was fond, unlike her previous awkwardness from the day. “You’re too sweet for your own good.”

I couldn’t help but smile bigger. “I get that a lot. But it’s just me. And I’m being honest.”

Leith rolled her hazel eyes before shifting again, and I blinked once a rough hand landed on my head. “Get some sleep, squirt.” The same hand ruffled my hair for a few moments before reaching to my blanket and pulling it up, effectively tucking me in without saying anything else. “Save that sweetness for the crew tomorrow.”

The yawn leaving me was loud enough for Leith apparently, since she ruffled my hair once more before pulling back. “Can’t wait to see Ace’s face at you,” was her mumble, and by then, I was trying to fight off sleep.

“Who is Ace—” my eyes were already closing with another yawn. Oh well. Another day. “Night night, Leith…”

The last thing I remember before falling asleep was that white hair sparkling in the moonlight as a hand brushed my shoulders.

“Vy?”

Huh? What?

“D-Daddy, I—”

What?

“I’m sorry, sir, it’s a rather difficult situation.” A long sigh followed. “Vy, do you want to take a break?”

No. No. Not this again. I don’t want to see this again. Vy is supposed to be dead. Not like this. Not like this…!

“Vy?”

“D-Daddy, I…I—”

I was not expecting to jump from my futon, heart racing like I was on a marathon that night. Nor was I expecting to wake up crying.

Tomoko-chan? Hisako’s voice, softer and comforting now, and her hands wrapped around my mental self as the library rumbled. Tomoko-chan, it’s okay. It’s okay.

I tried to catch my breath, the tears already streaming down my face, only to freeze at the sound of another voice.

“Ugh, what hit the ship…?!” was the apparent grumble at my right side, and I was already turning around to catch a glimpse of white hair and apparently crusted hazel eyes. “What’s going—” Leith immediately was on edge as soon as we made eye contact, and I found myself fumbling with my hands.

She didn’t deserve this.

Leith definitely deserved someone, anyone better than the crying little girl I was being right now.

“I-I’m sorry, I—”

Leith didn’t even let me continue before she was sitting up in her futon, scooting over to gently rest a hand on my hair. “Hey, squirt,” her voice was soft, almost as much as Mama’s, or Hisako’s with the way it sounded. “What happened? Why the tears?”

“I—” The lump in my throat made me choke as I tried to find a grip on anything I could find, instead grasping what fabric I could of the chest area of my nightgown. “I-I just…” Tears were already soaking my dress, and I tried not to sob. “I—”

Leith was already grunting in understanding before pulling, and I found my forehead bumping her shoulder before arms were winding around my back in a hug. What? “Hey, you’re okay. Tomo, you’re with me. You’re at home, and you’re okay.” She was starting to hum.

I tried not to stiffen as Leith started to run her fingers through my hair, brushing out any tangles with ease while continuing to hum. It was almost like she had revealed another side of herself, and I couldn’t even find the heart to comment once she started to sing, rocking me back and forth in the hug all the while.

My heart was already starting to slow.

My breathing was the next thing to even out as Leith continued to brush my hair. I don’t even remember if I ever hugged back. All that was lingering in my mind were the familiar lyrics from Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Leith’s voice, singing strong in spite of my remnant sniffling.

My heart was quiet now. Everything felt warmer. Almost gentler, somehow. It was like Mama’s hot chocolate with how everything had turned soft and fuzzy. The last thing I remember was my eyes closing and a nose brushing my head. “Payback’s not a bitch in this case,” was the mumble, and then all I could feel was Leith’s presence, cradling me as the blankets covered us again.

I don’t think I had that specific nightmare ever again.

The Vocaloid Rin-Len build I’m working on is not that much of an semi-op build from other builds DG players has post on JPN forums when posting their build with units in mind they want to run with. It’s decent enough to run for a vocaloid Rin len build to use with in event quest.

Around October, Mr. Divine started a stream along with others among the Divine Gate staff announced another re-run vocaloid collab event. Introducing new units and showing up previous units that are getting new evolution designs. Rin and Miku were getting a 7☆ unit evolution unit while others such as Meiko, Len, Luka, Kaito and a few others got 6☆ evolution along with new skills. I was excited for Kaito and Luka most of all from the event and wanted to get them from the previous vocaloid re-run but gotten Meiko instead which still best girl to me if I didn’t pulled for Luka who is best girl to my brother’s thoughts. 

Now with Rin and 2x Lens were pulled, I can somewhat make a unit build for them. I was looking up on dg pad-plus to see if there was any vocaloid builds JPN players made for them. Which there was none for them, so decided to make one myself since I had extra party slots to spare to use.

Quirk: Bubble Bomb! Her quirk enhances her lung capacity, and lets her exhale any sized colorful bubbles from her mouth, which she can control and remotely detonate. She can’t change their shape, though, not yet anyway. She can also ride a bubble and choose wether or not it has explosive qualities when it pops, and they’re tougher than a normal bubble.

Weakness: Sharp objects work well against her quirk, and she isn’t immune to the explosions or the noise. The larger the bubble, the slower it moves as well.

Costume: She’s very girly, so she chose a poofy but short skirt (so there isnt much fabric for villains to grab onto, as well as puffy sleeves to go with her aesthetic with a basic bulletproof bodysuit. Around her neck is a respirator/compact gas mask, which allows her to breathe clean air underwater or in bad conditions, to use her quirk effectively. She also has headphones to protect her ears from the explosions of her bubbles while still allowing her to hear her surroundings clearly.

Personality: She’s extremely bubbly, very friendly though a bit naive and maybe a bit too willing to see the good in people.

Do they work well with others?: She works very well with others, and her versatile quirk allows her to be a good team-up with most people.

Family: Her mom is a retired soldier, native japanese, who’s quirk is ‘Remote bomb - turn anything she touches into a bomb she can detonate at will’. Her dad is black, who moved from america to be with her mother, he’s a stay at home fashion designer dad, with the quirk ‘Bubble - he can produce bubbles from his exhalation in multiple colors and sizes.’

I’ve seen many Vocaloid Children (mostly Kaimei and Gakuluka kids) on Tumblr, and they’re all precious. So, why not Kaimiku? So, i decided to take the matter in my own hands! here we go!

Name: Kiyomi (清美=Pure Beauty)

Age: 11

About her:

-She is energetic, cheerful, easy-going, and rarely seen without a smile on her face. So she can be described as “Happy-Go-Lucky”

-She is immature and quite naive.

-She doesn’t take insults very well, many insults thrown at her and she’ll be in tears

-Can be quite stubborn when angered

-She likes playing, drawing, and listening to music

-She wants to grow her hair as long as Miku’s hair

-Her favourite things to do with her parents are braiding and brushing each other’s hair with Miku, and eating ice cream together with Kaito

-She loves long scarf. She loves seeing her long scarf flowing when she walks or run

(Everytime i design her oufit, they always ended up too similar to KAIKO’s, and this one still does!)

About him:

-He’s friendly, eager, a bit spoiled, and more level-headed and savvy than Kiyomi

-He’s a prankster, he loves to pull pranks on everyone, which could get troublesome

-His hair is unruly, which could take some time to tame

-He ties his long scarf short because he often trips on it

-He likes gaming and listening to music

-His favourite thing to do with his parents are singing with Miku, and playing games with Kaito

(I designed his outfit based on many japanese school uniforms)

About them:

-They both admire their parents and love listening to their songs together

-They both love and care about each other, they’re SBF (Sibling Best Friends), i guess?

-When Kiyomi is sad, he’ll do his best to try to cheer her up

-When they’re doing the same thing (eating, walking, doing chores), they sometimes engage in a friendly, yet HIGHLY competitive race

-They sometimes play games together, which often ended up with Arashi winning and Kiyomi ragequitting

-Kiyomi is protective of Arashi and will do her best to protect him

-When Arashi pranked Kiyomi, it is guaranteed that Kiyomi will try to prank him back and won’t stop until she has her revenge

-They both like Ice Creams and (surprisingly) can tolerate leek

-They become very upset when someone talks bad things about Kaito and Miku

With WonFes 2017 Winter over, it’s time to post the obligatory wishlist!  ^o^

Even though there were a lot of exciting figure announcements and prototype reveals at Wonder Festival 2017 Winter today, I don't feel my wallet is in too much danger.  There were a lot of Nendoroids that looked interesting, but I likely won't buy.  And the figures I ABSOLUTELY POSITVELY HAVE TO PREORDER, were fairly few (at least compared to previous WonFes).  

Below, the squares shaded darkly are figures I likely won't buy.  They caught my eye, but seriously, I'd rather spend my money on other Nendoroids.   The squares clouded in white are figures that if I was forced into a corner, I might be able to give up.  But it'd be nice if I didn't have to.  

Good Smile is going to kill my wallet if they announce more Harvest Moons!  ;u;  If every Crypton Future Media Vocaloid gets a Harvest Moon version, I don’t know what I’m going to do.  Those costumes are just too pretty.  XwX  

I feel like I'm obligated to get Figma Utena and Nendoroids Ed & Al, but I don't feel as strongly about those fandoms anymore, enough to justify the money those figures cost.  On the other hand, I have a rule about not passing up merchandise from an old fandom, for that reason alone.  The last time I passed up a Devil Hunter Yohko artbook, just because it was no longer my all-consuming obsession, I regretted it.  And I kept hunting for it at each succeeding con.  *That* is a regret.  Which is why I bought Figma Hikaru Shidou, even though I haven't been into CLAMP's manga, let alone Magic Knight Rayearth for years.  So when I see Utena, Ed & Al, my nostalgia dictates that I preorder them, even though my current obsessions say that I shouldn't be spending on old fandoms like Utena and FMA.  

I'm not really into these paritcular swords, but I've got a completionist problem.  * I already have Kashuu Kiyomitsu, so I have to get Yamatonokami Yasusada, right?  And Yasusada has a generic hakama!  Before Touken Ranbu Nendoroids, it was so hard to find nice, generic, male wafuku that could go on any character.  Still, even now, though it's gotten easier to get hakama from Tourabu, it's hard to find male kimono or yukata.  So I snatch up any versatile male wafuku wearing Nendoroid, I can find.   * Izuminokami Kanesada isn't really a character I'm particularly attached to, since I'm more a Dategumi fan than a Shinsengumi fan, but I've always liked his character design.  It even managed to make me ignore the long hair, even though I usually don't like that character design on males.  His costume was just elaborate enough, and the color scheme, contrasting between the deep red and intense blues, just really pop.  ^_^   * So that being said, I really shouldn't get Horikawa Kunihiro.  His costume design is closer to modern Western and I'd rather throw my money at wafuku designs.  But damn it, he's got the same intense blue contrasting against dark hair, just like Izuminokami.  ~_~;  That contrasting color scheme---or rather, contrasting intensity or value scale---just work too well on me.  And after seeing Horikawa in the Touken Ranbu Hanamaru anime, I'd feel bad if I split him up from the senpai partner he idolizes.  ~__~!  Anyway, I already preordered his brother (Yamanbagiri Kunihiro), so my completionist itch should be happy about that.  ...Even though the Kunihiro brothers don't seem very close...  x_x   * As for Ookanehira!  You can't trick me into wanting your Nendoroid!  ~w~!  I told myself not to buy any more characters I didn't already know!  (Unless they were exceptionally cute!)  I don't care if your eyes and hair color remind me of one of my main character OCs!  Nor if your seiyuu is Ono Yuki!  You're too full of yourself and I should be spending my money on cuter characters!  Stay back, I say!  Keep your charms away from me!  ~W~!

The Disney Nendoroids are cute and I like those classic "2nd Renaissance" movies, along with Tim Burton, but not enough to get figures.  But if I ran into them at a con or something, really cheap, and there was nothing else I was spending at during a small con, I might go ahead and get them.  Like what happened with Nendoroid Anna.  

I didn't include Nendoroid Yuri, because I already preordered him.  It's strange that I'm certain about getting Nendoroid Victor, even though I'm not as totally obsessed with Yuri on Ice as everyone else seems to be.  But despite YOI not taking over my life, I still do like the characters.  They're sweet!  And I want that ambiance in my display cases!

Karasuno Nendoroids.  No question there.  I just want all my Karasuno starters.  Announcing Yamaguchi and Sawamura together, when there are only 2 more starters on Karasuno, makes me think they'll be announcing them in pairs.  Here's to hoping for some Asahi and Tanaka Nendoroids!  ^o^  And if they decide to make a Nendoroid Ennoshita, I'll consider him.

Japan.  Kiku Honda.  My rule about still collecting for old fandoms, as if they're still my current obsession, applies here.  Except that my Hetalia fandom doesn't feel that long ago.  Probably because I saw Hetalia the World Twinkle at AkibaFest2016.  Let's hope that if we show demand for Japan, USUK will get some Nendoroids too.  *o*!

Nendoroid More Dress-up sets are my favorite Nendoroid more.  The outfits are so nicely generic and versatile, and help put a stop to me buying Nendoroids of characters I have no attachment to, just for their wardrobe.  (I've given Masamune & Yukimura enough wardrobe options already---but I just can't stop!  It's for DateSana!  ;o; )  It’ll be great to put some period era Nendoroids, uniformed characters, and fantasy costumed characters into a modern AU.  Groomsmen for those Nendoroid More wedding sets...Haikyuu boys in formal wear...my KanColle girls as office ladies...  *U*  I could make a cubicle diorama!  O.O  Still waiting for male wafuku Nendoroid More sets, but until then, any Nendoroid More Dress-up sets are always welcome!!!  ^U^

Ice Kirby is so cute and I love blue.  But if I wasn't willing to get original Kirby, with all his cuteness, and I didn't get MetaKnight, despite his cuteness, then I should probably save my money.  I wasn't deluded for a second into buying that robot armor Kirby.  It's on my wishlist because I just like to look at it.  ^^;  I mean, what the heck is that giant, cute thing?!  ^o^

Nendoroid More face cases are cute, but if it comes down to it, those are the first things I cut out of my budget.  After all, I skipped on that Konnosuke faceplate case, and I love Touken Ranbu.  Still, that penguin and fishing bear are ADORABLE.  When I saw the penguine case's announcement last year, I wanted to get it to re-create Chiyo's costume scenes from Azumanga Daioh.  ^u^

I'm not watching Re:Zero, but Emilia is beautiful!  *.*  I have a weakness for pastel hair and her outfit, on top of that, is just so pretty.  Her character design just screams "ingenue" deredere, and that's my favorite type of waifu (alongside kuudere and sometimes dandere).  And if I remember correctly the spoiler I heard once, then she could also be one of my favorite mythological archetypes, the "universal mother goddess".  

I'm not going to buy a Racing Miku.  Let's be honest.  They always look so cool, but they're $80, instead of the usual $50-$60, because they're supposed to support Good Smile's racing team.  But damn, this mint green fairy is cute!  I thought it hurt to pass up the knight themed Racing Miku.  But this is adorable!  ;w;  And I had needed a green female Nendoroid for my rainbow figure photos.  

I was flabbergasted when I saw the Lum Nendoroid and the Rinne Nendoroid.  I thought it might be a hoax, a different figure line from Nendoroid, or maybe even from years ago, long out of print.  But it's actually just one of those Nenodroids made by a different company; Good Smile only does the distribution.  (Like Tomytec's Wixoss Nendoroids.)  So it's not even on Good Smile's WHL4U website, which catalogs all their WonFes announcements.  It might be too easy to not realize when these are even released.  But I absolutely have to support Rumiko Takahashi Nendoroids.  I'm more a Ranma 1/2 fan, than Urusei Yatsura, and I've barely read much Rin-ne.  But if we support these, then maybe Play Future will make some Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, or Maison Ikkoku Nendoroids.  I would go nutz if Mermaid Saga Nendoroids were ever announced.  

The kimono Nendoroids for Puella Magi Madoka Magica are an absolute buy.  I never thought I wanted more than just Homura and Madoka, but if all the girls are going to get kimono Nendorids, then it's a good time to get the entire Holy Quintet.  ^-^  

Last but not least, Nendoroid More sets for Halloween and Christmas.  I really hope these are Dress-up sets and not just some accessories.  I'm a clay crafter; I can make little accessories on my own.  So these better be full-blown outfits.  Halloween is my favorite holiday and these would just be so useful for holiday figure photos.  I'm really looking forward to more info about these sets.  ^o^    

It was a really great WonFes.  And right on my birthday, it made the best present.  ^u^!  Hopefully, despite this long wishlist, I'll be able to keep things civil with my wallet.  ^^;

Bookshelf Briefs 1/25/20

Again!!, Vol. 12 | By Mitsurou Kubo | Kodansha Comics – For better or worse, Again!! has always been unpredictable. I appreciate that it didn’t always follow the expected story beats, but at the same time, the inconsistency has been frustrating. For example, Imamura’s fluctuating dedication to the Ouendan had him proclaim at one point how much he wanted his grandma to see him cheering, and had that occurred it would’ve been a heart-tugging moment. But it didn’t happen. Instead, Imamura returns from another do-over (this time, flashing to a future in which his death inspired the other characters) with an apathetic attitude that eventually prompts him to return to 2014—a future where his grandmother is dead—without apparently a single pang about it. The ending is also kind of abrupt and ambiguous. In the end, I find myself wishing this had been more predictable, ‘cos at least it would’ve been more satisfying. – Michelle Smith

Chihayafuru, Vol. 18 | By Yuki Suetsugu | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – This volume is full of choices for Chihaya. It’s time to complete another career survey, and this time she fills in a more realistic goal than becoming Queen. It’s also less ambitious, however, and thus her karuta advisor comes to see her play at the Yoshino Club Tournament to ask someone with more experience whether Chihaya really has the potential to become Queen. Happily, she’s playing with more precision and focus than ever, but her next opponent is Haruka Inokuma, a 4-time former Queen, so her chances really hinge on how she fares in that match. (I suspect Taichi vs. Arata is in the offing, as well.) Too, the school trip conflicts with the Master/Queen qualifiers, and Chihaya must choose which side of herself she wants to cultivate more. I seriously love this series and am eagerly anticipating the next volume! – Michelle Smith

Dr. STONE, Vol. 9 | By Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi | Viz Media – Perhaps being interesting was too much to ask, but Taiju and Yuzuriha are at least contributing now that they’ve been added to Senku’s team—Taiju by being a literal tank soaking up damage, and Yuzuriha by apparently taking all the statues that Tsukasa smashed and sewing them together, presumably so they can be revived. If this seems farfetched, it’s no more so than finding the hospital where Tsukasa’s terminally ill little sister was located and unstoning her, which apparently also cures her illness. That said, Tsukasa may not be the end boss, as there’s another who’s been waiting for the moment to make his debut as a Big Bad. This continues to be ridiculous but also cool. – Sean Gaffney

Hatsu*Haru, Vol. 10 | By Shizuki Fujisawa | Yen Press – Best Couple get the cover, and I continue to be more interested in them than I am Riko and Kai, who are cute and all but also somewhat predictable. The four of them go to the hot springs, mostly as Riko is too nervous to be alone with Kai, and Takaya learns that Ayumi leaves herself wide open. After a cute but slight Valentine’s chocolate chapter, the best part comes when Ayumi gets a bad cold and Takaya visits, meeting her parents and finding out she’s actually pretty rich and her family are famous film creators. Ayumi is not yet ready to reciprocate Takaya’s feelings, but she does open up to him about wanting to seek her own path. It’s great to see, and we have three volumes left after this, so I’m sure it will work out. – Sean Gaffney

ROADQUEEN: Eternal Roadtrip to Love | By Mira Ong Chua | Seven Seas – While not technically manga, ROADQUEEN will likely still appeal both stylistically and thematically to readers who enjoy Japanese comics. In particular, the volume makes an excellent addition to Seven Seas’ catalog of yuri titles. ROADQUEEN originated as a short online comic, followed up by a much longer multi-chapter sequel. Both of these stories and an additional bonus comic are collected in this volume. Leo, the prince of Princess Andromeda Academy, only has eyes for Bethany—her motorcycle. At least until Vega arrives on the scene and steals Bethany away. Vega promises she’ll give the bike back, but only after Leo proves that she can be a decent lesbian (not to mention human being). ROADQUEEN is deliberately over-the-top, Chua obviously having a lot of fun playing with tropes, but it can actually be very touching, too. With an abundance of humor and a ton of heart, ROADQUEEN is an absolute delight. – Ash Brown

Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight, Vol. 1 | By Mikokuno Homare and studio HIP-CATs | Ghost Ship – I will admit that for a title that’s coming out via the Ghost Ship label, which means “borderline porn,” this is pretty cute. Saki is a fairly new, still virginal succubus who has been thrown out of her family home as she’s old enough to be finding men to “feed” on, but she’s honestly a bit too shy for all that. She is thus near starvation when found by Renta, an adult salaryman who is also a virgin. They clearly fall for each other pretty fast, but are also both innocent and clueless, so nothing happens… well, OK, something happens, she manages to “feed,” but the plot is still “will they ever actually do anything” and the answer is likely “no.” Still, for tease, this is relatively cute and sweet. – Sean Gaffney

Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 5 | By Sorata Akiduki | Viz Media – Welp, despite what I thought, the series does not end just because the main couple confessed. Indeed, most of the volume involves separating the two—not by design, but simply as Shirayuki has been invited to another country for a get together… her old country, where Prince Raj is. Indeed, after having it out with her a couple of volumes ago, Raj is seemingly turning over a new leaf, but that doesn’t mean he’s comfortable around her at all—he never expected she’d accept the invitation. Her bodyguard for this journey is Obi, and I note that this series is very good at having a bunch of guys in it who are not immediately in love with the heroine. Whether that’s true of the new villain introduced here, who knows? – Sean Gaffney

Teasing Master Takagi-san, Vol. 7 | By Soichiro Yamamoto | Yen Press – Having established that our leads will end up married with a child in the future, the series can now slowly move forward in increments, culminating in the final chapter here, where Nishikata, of his own volition, asks Takagi to the summer festival. But we’re also looking back, as we get to see how the two of them first met, and how Nishikata’s two basic qualities—a nice guy with great faces when he’s embarrassed or upset—inspire Takagi almost immediately. I’m not sure this is exactly when she falls for him, but she certainly has by the end of this book, which gives us another nice blushing reaction from her. Oh yes, and there’s still plenty of teasing. You expected something else? – Sean Gaffney

The Way of the Househusband, Vol. 2 | By Kousuke Oono | VIZ Media – This was another fun volume of The Way of the Househusband, in which Tatsu tries aerobics and yoga, intimidates a yakuza by offering him kitchen gadgets, eradicates stubborn stains in Masa’s laundry, plays volleyball with housewives, and more. I really appreciate that we saw more of Miku, his wife, this time around, and probably my favorite chapter is the final one, in which her parents drop by for a visit. Even though the fish-out-of-water setup in this series reminds me of the premise of Saint Young Men, The Way of the Househusband is not only visually superior (better art, great pacing to jokes), but has more heart, especially the bonus chapter in which we see Miku’s dad practicing for the moment when he asks Tatsu if he wants to go outside and play catch. I stop short of calling the manga sweet, but it’s wholly endearing. Highly recommended. – Michelle Smith

Yowamushi Pedal, Vol. 13 | By Wataru Watanabe | Yen Press – Yowamushi Pedal, Vol. 13 | By Wataru Watanabe | Yen Press – OK, I was probably foolish to think the race would end in this volume. We’re gonna have to wait for fourteen. But in return, we get so much shonen sports at its best. Midousuji does his best, but then crashes and burns. Instead, it’s Manami who gets the bulk of this book, where we discover that he enjoys shifting gears higher when he should be doing the opposite, just to make things even more fun. That said, he shouldn’t dismiss our hero, Onoda, who has his pedaling and his Pretty Princess song to keep him going forever. (Oh yes, and his mother shows up—apparently at rando, as he never told her about the race? This was the funniest part of the book.) Things should end next volume… well, at least this race. – Sean Gaffney
