fantasy au misa!

au explanation under cut! be warned it's fairly long and complicated

Alright, so, in this au, some people are born with mana, meaning that their blood can be used by alchemists to make magical artifacts. Skin, hair, etc also works, but blood is the most potent. They cannot do magic themselves, but can use or make artifacts just like anyone else. However, common superstition has it that they can, and many people specifically believe they can place curses.

These people technically have all the same rights as normal people, but they are often killed for their mana, which is then sold illegally to alchemists. Because of this, many people with mana keep that a secret. Additionally, while the kingdom the story focuses on (it doesn’t have a name yet) gives citizens with mana equal rights, at least on paper, most do not, and many people without mana are upset about this.

Misa is a princess in the main kingdom, and secretly has mana. Her parents, the king and queen, were assassinated when she was about 16. Even though she was the rightful heir to the throne, the royal court, most of whom were aware of the fact that she has mana, decided that they didn’t want a queen with mana, and instated a different king, using her age as the excuse to the public as to why she wasn’t made queen. If anyone has an idea for a canon character who could fit that role of the new king, I’m all ears. Right now, I might just make him Hideki Ryuga, because there’s no one who really fits.

Rem is a human in this au. She was a promising young squire who was chosen at the age of 14 to serve and protect Misa specifically, instead of completing the standard knight training. (Misa and Rem are close to the same age, but Misa is about a year younger.) She knows about her mana, and it’s her job to make sure that the public doesn’t find out.

A few years after the king and queen are assassinated, a rebel group of people with mana led by a mysterious figure calling themself “Kira” arises, and start fighting against different black market mana trade organizations. Misa, who up until this point had been more or less locked in the castle, decides to run away to join them. Rem comes with her to protect her.

I won't say anything else from here, seeing as that would likely spoil important plot points and I do plan on actually writing this! Be warned, there is a good chance some of this will be changed for the actual fic, though.

I actually hate that I just got straightbaited by the Death Note jdrama. I was fully expecting this yagamane to at least start off less one-sided than the anime because Light was such a big Misa-Misa fanboy. Like, he went to all her concerts! He was so determined to save her life! He's a certified Misa simp! I thought for sure he'd be a little flustered about his idol being head over heels for him, but no, he's just instantly annoyed by her. Not even the slightest hint of him slowly going from starstruck to disappointed at his celebrity crush being so airheaded to just irritated by her. Imagine being uhhhh idk a swiftie and Taylor Swift randomly shows up at your doorstep one day professing her love for you and then you slam the door in her face and go "ewwww what a freak"

Like forget the serial murder this is by far the craziest thing Light Yagami has done

YAGAMANE + HOLIDAY:

Misa spends most holidays with the Yagami family once she's Light's official girlfriend, and it's often a bit awkward for her to try to properly fit in with the traditional suburban nuclear family vibes, which is super different than the way she grew up herself. She especially gets the feeling Sachiko secretly doesn't like her most times, and how could she ever forget mistakenly calling Soichiro a pervy stalker the first time she met him? Luckily Sayu seems to love her, though.

YAGAMANE + BATHING/SHOWERING:

You just know Misa has tried to have an elaborate romantic bath with Light multiple times once they've moved in together. I feel like most of the time she ends up just having to use that bath by herself, but maybe once or twice he's been like, "sure why not" after she does a bunch of Kira shit for him that goes well

YAGAMANE + KISSING:

I believe literally the only physical thing they ever did together until after the Yotsuba arc was that one awkward kiss when Light was trying to shut her up. They didn't have any other time alone together before that

YAGAMANE + SOFT SPOT:

I think Light realized he did have more of a soft spot for Misa and her extreme loyalty than he previously thought when he was trying to woo Kiyomi on the side because of how comparatively high-maintenance Kiyomi was about certain things (not that Kiyomi was necessarily wrong to demand more respectful treatment from him, but he was probably inwardly going "jeez Misa is way less difficult to deal with about all this stuff, what a pain in the ass")

14. Ryuk or Rem?

this is a hard one... I suppose Ryuk, since his character is more fleshed out than Rem.

11. what do you think about [Yagamane]?

well, I believe canon accurately portrayed their relationship dynamics. It’s one-sided and rather toxic. Light treats it like a business deal, and Misa uses him to fuel her damsel fantasies. there’s no genuine love from either person (including Misa).

lol i almost forget abt this 😭 anyway!

yagamane - i like them in a canonical tragic angst they are. a loveless one sided relationship glued by murder and glory and pretending. it's actually one of my fav thing abt death note. i like them as a concept and canonical point, not a ship i like as a comfort/fun.

lawlight - i hate them sm, they're so terrible. whose otp is this. i'm obviously not getting crazy over it 🙄 /s
