Adventure Twelve

Trade Market

Dustclover dreams of sitting outside the Dark Forest, orange eyes that remind her of her mother sit deep within the dark. She approaches, the trees arc to reveal Ashwind, Bramblestar’s once trusted advisor and Stoneteller...

☆・*。

When she awakes, it’s luckily yet another peaceful morning in Fern Clan. Her paw has healed well enough, though a scar is now left behind. She steps out into the clearing to see her new apprentice Berrypaw walking with his brother, Goldenpaw.

She notices Buttermoss crafting chunky necklaces made of bone and old dried berries. The blonde she cat plans on selling them at the Trade Market this evening. Adorning one is Rockpaw, who appears to be embarrassed to have it on. The two brothers shoot some embarrassing insults at him, mainly Goldenpaw. Rockpaw rushes off in shame.

Dustclover narrows her eyes. This behavior wouldn’t go unchecked, and she raised her large paws, bapping both apprentices on the head. She scolds them, they should have more respect for their clan mates! Berrypaw’s ears flatten and he looks at her wide eyed and apologetically. Goldenpaw however, snarls at her.

“You’re not my mentor!”

She’s taken aback by his treatment of senior warriors. Darkstar however, calls Goldenpaw over. The leader, though frequently shown to have disinterest in most things is sifting through a collection of bones. Darkstar loves bones, they’re useful for armor, tools, and decor. She figured she could bring some of her collection to the Trade Market this evening.

First, she must deal with Goldenpaw.

Her apprentice is snippy, bold, but not very respectful. She decides a proper punishment for him will be helping Onetooth, an elder, chew his food. Goldenpaw looks disgusted by the idea, but Darkstar tells him if he does a good job he can come to the market. This seems convincing enough.

Meanwhile Dustclover returns to a secret spot to pick as many berries as possible. Berrypaw had previously asked if he could come with to which Dustclover keeps replying with

“Maybe when you’re older…” Whatever that means. Really, she just wanted to keep her best spot a secret. She was infamous at the market for her berries, and perhaps one day she may pass down the tradition to Berrypaw.

Darkstar checks in on Goldenpaw, to see a satisfied old Onetooth. It'd decided, he may go to the market. She gives him a small bone that he can trade with, and divulges on a long rant about what the bone is, where it was from, how it can be used, and so on and so on...

Once the cats all have something to trade, the clan sets out to the Great Rocks. Cats from every clan have laid out blankets and furs holding multitudes of goods. Rain Clan fish freshly wrapped in leaves, Boulder Clan pottery and sculpture, Ash Clan snake skin and bones. Cats wander and chat with one another carrying pouches and baskets filled with oddities to trade with. Things seem less tense among the clans this Holiday, and its a breath of fresh air for Fern Clan…

Darkstar watches the crowd intensely, sitting with her bones. She sees Rain Clan’s new leader, Opalstar. A light brown she-cat with a white belly. She stares daggers through the cat, looking for any sign of dishonesty. Any sort of despicable nature… But nothing. She laughs and meows softly with passerby’s, appearing graceful and levelheaded but able to smile.

Darkstar peels her eyes away from her for now… Meanwhile Buttermoss and Rockpaw are trading her necklaces. Her small apprentice sits dutifully beside her, but she can tell he’s watching his friends from afar. She tells him to go run off and see his friends, and holds down the fort from there.

Dustclover runs a very successful berry booth where multiple cats line up to eat up a sweet treat. Berrypaw dutifully helps refill small berry cups and keeps stock of each basket. She gives them away freely, however many cats give her small items as tips for each goodie.

Darkstar lets Goldenpaw walk off to enjoy the market, manning her booth alone. Many cats are too intimidated to approach her, which isn't unusual for her. However Ash Clan's leader Crowstar greets her and offers her a perfectly well intact racoon skull. After gaining such an excellent piece she is remarkably satisfied. But satisfaction and glee only sits in Darkstar for so long when she realizes she cant see Goldenpaw anywhere.

Buttermoss sees an old Ash Clan friend as well, Snakefoot, a cat she had saved from two legs greets her and trades her for a necklace and bracelet for his mate. He gives her a trout and a beetle encrusted in a block of amber in exchange. She didn't seem to get much attention from her booth, though the occasional elder and queen seemed very taken with her work.

Darkstar demands a Fern Clan warrior Bumblefoot watch her stock while she looks for her apprentice. He awkwardly agrees, despite having no idea what the bones are worth in trade. The leader walks into the crowd looking for Goldenpaw, paranoia creeping in. After the war with Rain Clan she's still on high alert. Finally she sees him flirting with another Rain Clan apprentice at a fish stall. Darkstar's presence scares the small she cat off, and Goldenpaw is startled to find her behind him. Darkstar very awkwardly suggests they walk around the market together for awhile. He stiffly agrees, and the two find a really cool stall held by Lttlefang, the Boulder Clan Stoneteller.

Inside are fossils and crystals found from within the mountain. Darkstar spots a fossilized fish, which she knows she NEEDS to have for her collection. She didn't want to give away her new raccoon skull however...

Darkstar secretly reveals to Littlefang her most prized possession. A beautifully carved fang. There is a secret artist within the forest who leaves these bones around. They are especially valuable during times of trade, as their intricate markings attract many cats. Darkstar, unbenounced to most, is this artist. She asks for the fossil in exchange for the fang, and very awkwardly states that she just... Found it. Littlefang looks at her, and they both know, HE KNOWS she made it. The small whimpy little cat says nothing though, and eagerly accepts, giving her the fossil. He knows she'd beat her to a pulp if he said anything. Goldenpaw is none the wiser, and gets himself an amethyst beetle.

Rockpaw returns to Buttermoss with a pretty pink shell necklace he traded for her, and some strawberries from Dustclover's booth. Buttermoss of course gushes about how sweet he is, which makes the young tom cat want to sink into his fur. Though he does like the attention a little... In exchange, Buttermoss gives him the amber encrusted beetle, which he finds pretty cool!

Littlefang rushes over to Buttermoss's booth and asks her to make a necklace with the tooth in exchange for anything she wants. As long as she keeps it explicitly secret. She agrees, and alludes to knowing the creator to Rockpaw. Her young apprentice looks up to her curiously, but she said she'd be skinned if she told anyone.

Dustclover was starting to collect a pile of goods, and explains to Berrypaw that being "the berry guy" was good for your image in times of strife. Berrypaw listens very carefully, and mentally takes notes. The players all suspect Dustclover's special interest is berries, even her apprentice has a berry name. Leaf agrees enthusiastically.

Once Dustclover was low on stock, it was time for the final event. A berry food fight, every cat playfully wrestles to win the last basket of berries. The elders sit back and watch sunbathing in the last rays of light before they dip into the horizon. This years winner is a small Ash Clan cat, who outbested everyone with her small body. She was able to slip past and dodge most cats till they were too exhausted to fight her.

With that, the market was closed. Darkstar returned to her booth to see how Bumblefoot had done. She stood before a mountain of goods, beautiful rain pots, fresh fish, herbs, tools and cloaks. She stared at his dead pan, Bumblefoot began to apologize, before she nodded in approval. She was honestly shocked by how well he had done, and noted that he would sell with her next year. She proceeded to info dump to him on the way home about her bones.

Cats were smeared with berry juice, and the rainbow of pelts all went back to their clans to clean up and sleep. Thanks to Bumblefoot, the elders now had a new rain pot they could get fresh water from. Buttermoss snuck off to Grizzlebark's old oak to begin her work on Littlefang’s necklace in secret...
