Midcareer Artist/Author Tip: Save a copy of any interviews or reviews about your work because who knows if the outlet where that was published will completely collapse
Tumblr media
I'm really grateful I'm sorta shameless enough to archive copies of interviews and especially nice reviews of my comics because if I hadn't, this particular interview with the British Library would just be gone forever. I've put up a copy in the Alexander Comic website, so at least this piece of my webcomic's personal history is intact and accessible.
Late last year the British Library experienced a huge data breach / cybersecurity attack that completely evaporated the digital archives. Blog posts, the manuscript/illumination archives, web pages, exhibition catalogues, ... they are still down months later. It's wild to me that such a thing can happen to a PUBLIC infrastructure - a NATIONAL library and archive!!! Decades of information gone like that. Its been months and months of barely anything coming back online.
As an artist from outside the UK, I literally CANNOT access any of the European manuscripts of the Alexander Romance in their collection - meaning the British Library as a resource is impossible for Book Two. Which is wild cos the Library was like almost 50% of the bibliography and art references for Book One. As someone whose dayjob is to build, manage and audit workflow / data infrastructure this stuns me in disbelief at how lax the library was about backing up their website and digital infrastructure. They don't even have offline, offsite copies?? I'm talking about basic things here, not even the high level security and data engineering stuff. (all this being said with the knowledge that the British Library itself keeps getting their budget cut)
Anyway idk, this whole thing is a big lesson on archiving things online (and always backing up your stuff). Cos the Internet isn't forever apparently.

My boyfriend and I have been speculating non-stop about what this whole drop thing could mean. A new album? I personally believe it's too early to announce something like that. A secret concert? most likely, but if that were the case, why would they want everyone to gather in one spot, when the attendees could simply post vids/pics afterwards. I personally don't think it's related with Copia's supposed demise, because it would not make sense to introduce a new Papa right before the premiere of the movie. If he is meant to go, it won't be through this event, in my opinion...
So, I decided to research a little bit more on the link for the drops, this one in specific
Tumblr media
I first checked for drops.nyc, and that ended up redirecting me to a website - drops.ar. This company specializes in doing augmented reality projects, and have worked with all sorts of big brands and bands, including Trivium and Amon Amarth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When you enter the website, you can see a video that acts as a portfolio of sorts for the different projects they've done, including viewings of art pieces, scavenger hunts, or portals to digital exhibitions (you can also see little mini versions of these projects, if you scroll all the way down on their home page).
Either way, I'm not exactly sure what TF is planning, but my guess is that it will be a fun exhibition of sorts online, with a possible fun announcement. Or maybe more creative and interactive marketing for the movie, most likely. Nothing that is anxiety inducing, at least not yet.
Only time will tell.

sorry for the late chpt. I was really sick so i tried my best on this chpt. next chpt will be longer, i promise.
warnings: some level of chae-young attempting infidelity, swearing

wonwoo came home to find yn passed out on the couch.
"you okay?" - wonwoo
"i need sleep. i've been stuck at school finishing my final project and i just finished. now i have to worry about the stupid reunion in two days. i have no dress and i look like a zombie. life is great." - yn
"go take a shower. i'll get the guys to help you. jeonghan has connections." - wonwoo
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the word shock wasn't enough to describe the look on everyone's faces when yn and wonwoo walked in through the door.
some background information: in the one week before this gathering, yn had completed her pieces for the museum, her final project for university and all her outstanding commissions. her exhibit had been very successful and she had earned quite a significant amount of money.
"yn. is that your boyfriend?" - aunt
"yes. this is jeon wonwoo, my boyfriend." - yn
"nice to meet you, my name is jeon wonwoo." - wonwoo
"yn-noona... isn't that the streamer gameboi? you're dating Korea's number 1 [game name] player?" - younger cousin
"no way..."
the whispers in the event room got louder and louder until the people she hated finally came towards her. it was evident that chae-young was gawking at wonwoo. she didn't even bother to hide her lovestruck expression from her husband.
"so this is the new guy you have, huh yn." - mother
"good morning, i'm jeon wonwoo." - wonwoo
it seemed like he had to repeat himself often today.
"what's your net worth?" a disrespectful question right off the bat was expected and both yn and wonwoo had prepared for it.
without missing a beat, wonwoo simply smiled and said, "14 million. I am sure that I have enough to take care of yn for the rest of our lives."
the jealousy that clouded chae-young's face was the best thing that yn had ever seen.
sitting at the table was very awkward because they were surrounded by whispers and glances.
“so wonwoo. what do you work as?” chae-young’s husband was actually a very nice man. he was always kind to yn and her brother and was the complete opposite of his distasteful wife.
“i’m a gamer. i’m currently in talks of joining [fictional korea no.1 pro gamer team]. that deal closes before june,” - wonwoo
“ah i see. what about you, yn? what are you working as now?” this question was on everyone’s mind. some with ulterior motives.
“up until thursday, i was a museum part-timer and finishing university. but i recently managed to sell many of my art pieces and have made quite a name for myself in the past three days. in case you all didn’t know, almost every artwork in this building was made by me over the last 4 years.” - yn
the room was silent. you could hear a pin drop and wonwoo couldn’t help but smile to himself.
let’s walk through the real train of events.
after the “fake-dating” agreement, wonwoo, minghao, mingyu and dokyeom had helped yn move every piece of her artworks over the years to minghao’s studio to sort through them. it took them almost 30 hours to categorise. by monday, they had organised the auction within the museum, an exhibition for her other works and an online bidding website for exclusive works. from tuesday to thursday, the auctions and exhibitions opened.
every one of yn’s artworks sold for incredibly high prices. this particular hotel that the family reunion was, had purchased a significant amount of said artworks.
“you mean you painted that painting of a phoenix?” - uncle
“i did that 2 years ago.” - yn
“and that ceramic heart? that was you?” - aunt
“yes.” - yn
wonwoo could not help but smile at yn’s nonchalent bragging. just then, a hand reached across to tap his.
“so~ wonwoo-oppa~ how did you and yn meet?" chae-young began to blatantly flirt with wonwoo while her HUSBAND sat helplessly beside her.
“i commissioned an art piece from her and fell in love at first sight.” wonwoo forcefully took back his hand before leaning closer to yn, earning a scowl from chae-young.
yn was’t exaggerating when she described all of chae-young’s antics.
here’s a list of the things she tried but failed to do. seduce wonwoo, yn’s “boyfriend”, spill water on yn, pretend that yn stepped on her foot on purpose, claim yn slapped her.
how embarrassing.

synopsis: wonwoo is a popular streamer known for his incredible gaming skills and good looks. He turned heads. but he hates the attention. he just wants to play games and earn money. one day he receives a letter. his apartment’s rent has almost doubled. no warnings at all. his current paycheck from streaming can’t shoulder those bills. he has no choice but to rent out his spare room. to who? a fresh art university graduate who has… 1. a stable job ✅ 2. talent for art and sculpting ✅ 3. many friends ❌ 4. social anxiety ✅ 5. no filter ✅ when his iconic cat logo gets copystriked, she comes to the rescue with a new logo for him. when his apartment’s walls start peeling, she fixes it. whatever he used to struggle with… the empty space... was now filled by her. so what does he *last player standing* do when her ex *enemy spotted* tries to take her back? heh. *clutch* he clutches.

TRIPITAKA - the lost spiritual sequel to Cosmology of Kyoto was found
Tumblr media
This post is a compilation of a series of tweets I have composed over a period of weeks during this summer.
For years, it was uncertain whether TRIPITAKA 玄奘三蔵求法の旅, by Soft Edge, had in fact ever been published. I remind the more absent-minded readers that this is the studio responsible for the mythical CD-ROM Cosmology of Kyoto, originally released in Japan in 1993, later published in the United States by Yano Electric in 1995. Knowledge of this their second and final production comes solely from the online CVs of producers Hiroshi Ōnishi and Mori Kōichi. No other information could be found online, and no actual copy of the game was known to exist.
Earlier this year, this disc surfaced at Yahoo Auctions. It sold for nearly $300 after 24 bids.
Tumblr media
As suggested by its tile, which translates to Xuanzang Sanzo's Dharma-Seeking Journey, it was always assumed that the game illustrated episodes of the life of the celebrated Chinese Buddhist monk, particularly his 7th century pilgrimage to India. The captures printed on the back not only show a character highly reminiscent of the ancient scholar, they depict a variety of scenes taking place in China and India.
According to the severely incomplete archived version of PD Inc's website, the Japanese publisher responsible for this digipack, it was available for sale at museums hosting the 1999 Silk Road Journey To The West exhibition, which suitably matches the date printed on the back cover. However, this date presents yet another open question, as the Ōnishi-San and Kōichi-San bios both list it as a 1995 production.
Tumblr media
The technical specifications may provide an enlightening clue, as they refer to Windows 95, 640x480px resolution and an 8-Bit color mode. This indicates that TRIPITAKA was indeed developed sometime between 1993 and 1995, although it was never published in the CD-ROM game circuit, certainly not in the immediate years after its development was completed. Combined with the data retrieved from the publisher's website, the edition shown here appears to have been produced solely for the occasion, as a means to diversify the museum shop catalog for this major exhibit, given the shared theme.
It would have been nearly impossible, had the program been in fact published in 1995, for a single copy to not have been spotted or mentioned online by the many Japanese collectors who have attempted to locate it for decades, unsuccessfully. On the other hand, a CD-ROM that was sold at a museum exhibit is likely to be purchased by visitors who were entirely unaware of the item's relevance as an elusive multimedia gem.
If a tangent is permitted here, both productions are inextricably linked with the museum space, and as far as I can speculate, Cosmology of Kyoto was, itself, also published with the intention of being made available in gallery stores in addition to computer game retailers. I say this because this was a production made possible by collaborative efforts including a variety of Japanese museums, to the extent these are referenced by name in the game's credits.
Considering the price at which the item was sold at auction, I was fairly certain that it was purchased by one such video game collector who knew exactly what they were bidding for. Later in July, I was able to locate the buyer and establish contact. Initially, the buyer was only able to produce this screenshot of the disc program launcher. The title reads "Cosmology of Asia", validating the claims that Soft Edge was in effect planning for series of edutainment software prior to its demise in the mid-90s.
Tumblr media
In my second contact with the owner, I asked if he was available to produce a disc image and share it online for purposes of software preservation. The owner politely declined, stating that this was not something he was willing to do but offered to record the following gameplay video instead.
youtube
At a glance, the art style of Tripitaka is unsurprisingly similar to that of Cosmology. Most of its episodes occur during the day, whereas the latter was mostly played under the dark cover of night. The first scene depicts a dying Xuanzang reminiscing on his journeys in the company of a young chronicler. Structurally, both games are also nearly indistinguishable from one another, producing ample historical information for context, including detailed maps and chronologies.
TRIPITAKA was considered to be lost media for decades. As such, the importance of this footage could hardly be overstated. I would not hesitate to compare this development to the unearthing of Osamu Sato's Chu-Teng, the Eastern Mind sequel that was also deemed lost for many years, miraculously found during the time this blog was inactive.
I am delighted to have played a minor role in the unraveling of this thirty year old mystery, and can hardly contain my enthusiasm, as I now find myself equipped with sufficient information to produce a full post concerning a game about which I could not have written more than a sentence, just last year.
I would also like to thank the author of the @mendelpalace Tumblr for his timely alert regarding the Yahoo listing.

I'm so happy to know you're actually an historian on top of holding that account for the community.🫶
I wanted to ask if you knew some ressources that covered what were different historic fashion in the different Catalan Countries, on different eras and centuries?
My main institute for research and learning is too limited on the subject, so I got redirected to online libraries.
Hi! 😁 Sorry it took me some days to answer, I've been very busy and I was waiting to get a moment to answer this from my computer because adding links from the app is a pain.
(This is secondary but first of all I wanted to say I'm actually an archaeologist and not a historian, I left that ask without specifying what I had studied in relation to history because I don't want to give much information about myself online lol, but I don't want to give wrong credentials either.)
I can give very limited information about this because it's not my area of study, sorry. I'm assuming for your blog description that the resources can be in Catalan, am I right? (because I don't know anything in English about this)
My first thought was the Virtual Museum of Fashion of Catalonia. They have digitalized pieces from different collections around the country. You can browse them by many different labels. But most of them are from the 18th century to nowadays, very few are older than that.
Then my second thought was that the collection Barcelona 1700 surely had one tome dedicated to clothing, and of course they do! It's this book:
Tumblr media
Barcelona 1700 is a collection of books about different topics of life in the Early Modern Period in Barcelona, each of them written by historians (or other scholars) specialized in that particular topic. If you're looking for 17th and early 18th centuries, you'll find it here.
You can also check past exhibits from the Valencian Silk Museum and you can find some information in the website of the Garnet Institute (Northern Catalonia).
For the 20th and 21st century, there are many more things. You can check the collection of the Design Museum or the Foundation Antoni de Montpalau which specializes in preserving fashion from the 20th century. And for an overview of seamstresses and fashion in the 20th century, there's this past exhibit from the Catalonia History Museum that continues to be available on their website: Moda i modistes.
If you look for specific time periods, you can probably find more articles or other sources of reliable information. I've checked to see if anything would come up with a quick search on Google Scholar and I found this PhD thesis titled "L'art de la indumentària a la Catalunya del segle XIV", this other PhD thesis titled "La indumentaria señorial femenina catalana del siglo XV y su reflejo en el arte", or this article "La indumentària tradicional d'Eivissa segons les aquarel·les de Joan d'Ivori", "Pasado de moda: una serie de ilustraciones de la indumentaria popular valenciana". I also found this article titled "Definició de dues tipologies de vestit a través del seu ús històric: la indumentària d'arrel tradicional i el vestit d'inspiració internacional" that cites many other books that could be useful to you: Indumentaria tradicional by Joan Amades (of course, how could Amades not have covered everything!), La indumentària civil catalana: segles XIII-XV by Isidre Marangues, Indumentària tradicional del Pallars by Ramon Violant i Simorra, El vestit tradicional d’Amposta. La seva època by Màrius Lopez Albiol, etc.
I don't know what level of analysis and accuracy you're going for, but maybe you can find it useful to take a look at historical recreation societies. Most of them here are from the Baroque period or the Civil War, but you can find them throughout all the Catalan Countries (various Miquelets groups in the Valencian Country and Catalonia come to mind, or the Le Temps du Costume Roussillonais in Northern Catalonia which reaches until the 1910s).
If there's any specific period of history that you're looking for, I can try to find more about that. All the articles I've linked in this post are open, so you don't need to access it through a university or research institution. I hope it's useful!

The New English Art Club Annual Exhibition 2024 is online right now (link here), so I wanted to go through it and share my picks with you guys.
The online exhibition is set up mainly to sell art, so there is very little information about the works on the website. There are no descriptions or artist's statements, so we are going purely on my vibes here. The selection and arrangement is also mine, so this post is in essence a mini-exhibition curated for you by me. I'm gonna call it:
State of the Art
A Curated Selection from The New English Art Club Annual Exhibition 2024
(Image descriptions in alt-texts.)
We start with my absolute favourite, "Natural History Museum, Oxford" by T. F. Ashley. (Link)
Pro-tip for any aspiring curators: you always lead with the strongest piece. If this was a physical exhibition, this would be on the poster, this would be hanging on the main wall of the space.
Tumblr media
I am the kind of person who prioritises drawing over everything else in art. I don't mean drawing as a medium (though that is important to me too), but as an element of art. And this piece - while obviously being made in a drawing medium - also manifests the kind of drawing that I think is important. To me that kind of drawing is almost like thinking with a pencil in hand, making a thought process visual, visible.
This piece also has that elusive quality of looking tactile. I live a very digital life, and I have chased that vibe of "digital image that looks like you are touching it" for a long time - and this image nails it.
I am also drawn to this image for its content, as I work in a museum so the picture is relevant to my professional interests, too.
Rest of it is under the cut, because I am considerate of y'alls dashboards.
Landscapes
First we will have a landscapes section. Landscapes are not usually particularly divisive, so it's a safe choice to lead into an exhibition with them. They also have the power to be familiar: the viewers of the exhibition might know the place depicted in the works. Or, since a lot of places on Earth have similar vibes, a place might remind someone of a different place.
Melissa Scott-Miller: "Waterside Cafe, Little Venice" (Link)
Tumblr media
For example this painting reminds me of Coventry, where I used to live, because Coventry has a river running through it, and the river has these kinds of narrow houseboats on it. I never had the opportunity to visit one, so this painting makes me feel some kind of a nostalgic longing or remembering a missed opportunity.
It leads us to the next painting: "Boating Central Park" by Ruth Stage. (Link)
Tumblr media
This painting is done in egg tempera, which is not an easy technique, and knowing that appeals to me - I enjoy examples of humans being good at doing difficult things. The image is also beautiful. It doesn't look like anything I have ever seen. Like, I can get vibes of influences, but it doesn't feel like I have seen paintings like this a lot in my life. Also grey is my favourite colour.
Next we will have another unique-looking landscape, "Estate - The End of the Affair" by Andrew Torr. (Link)
Tumblr media
The geometric shapes and planes of colour are approaching abstraction without crossing over to it. I also really enjoy mundane things being given the art treatment, because making a painting does elevate its subject, still. The area depicted in the image looks like somewhere people like me might live, in a way that "fancy" places don't, because I'm not rich or fancy.
Taidg O'Malley: "Piazza del Campo Rooftops, Siena" (Link)
Tumblr media
Another landscape approaching abstraction, with the additional layer of an unusual point of view. I just really really love this, it is so inventive, and especially when "Siena" is the name of a place but also the word for the colour that is the most prominent in the image. The artist is using the medium of the painting to pass on that insight they have had about the association between the name of the place and the name of the colour, and it feels fantastic to be receiving that insight. For my personal art practice sharing insights and pointing out things I have noticed in the world are central motivations for me, so all sorts of synapses are firing for me right now.
And lets pair another high up view point with the painting above:
John Duffin: "W1A - BBC and All Souls Church, Langham Place" (Link)
Tumblr media
This is an etching, which is a kind of print where you scrape the image onto a metal plate with a needle. I love a fine line and you don't get much finer lines than with etching. I also really love all printmaking. The mood in the image is also top notch, very dramatic and powerful, even ominous. The light is almost like a frozen explosion, and the tall buildings make me think of Batman the Animated Series. I also really like the use of the postal code in the title. Not sure why, but it's cool, interesting, I like codes.
We will continue the fine lines and meticulous details idea here, with Neil Pittaway's "Brunel City". (Link)
Tumblr media
Something about the colours and the details done in white hark back also to the egg tempera painting of Central Park, but this one is a drawing done with pen, ink, watercolour, and "body colour" (???) The image is delightfully Inception-esque, and I really jive with this way of depicting a city.
We follow it up with "Wiener Jugedstil Palast" by the same artist. (Link)
Tumblr media
More of this incredibly enjoyable line work depicting the kind of architecture I (and a bunch of other people here on Tumblr) like.
Portraits
It leads us neatly to our next segment: Portraits. Portraits are also nice and friendly for viewers, because we are humans and we know how to look at pictures of other humans. Of course the depiction of humans does bring in the possibility of viewer (and artist! and curator!) bias, bigotry, and sense of propriety (what if someone is naked? what is appropriate? where do we draw the lines?) so we run a slightly bigger risk by introducing the human element to our exhibition.
We start with Frederick Jones and "Hidden" (Link), as it carries a similar visual language as the above drawing.
Tumblr media
This wood engraving might not be a portrait in the strictest sense, considering the person is obscured, but I don't subscribe to the idea that we can be identified only by our faces. Also the Rene Magritte vibe is strong here, and who doesn't like a good Magritte.
Michelle Maddox: "Self Portrait in the Studio" (Link)
Tumblr media
Another portrait with an obscured subject, with nice geometric-ish surfaces of colour (check out those circles and semicircles on the twigs in the vase!), which this time add to the Magritte vibes.
Tumblr media
Charlotte Sorapure's "The Lepidopterist's Dream" (Link) introduces another layer of surrealist inspiration with the trope of the reflection in a mirror reaching out. The vase with plants connects this one to the previous painting too.
The objects in front of and reflected in the mirror seem normal enough until you hang on a moment exploring the image and begin to notice that some of the butterflies have alighted onto mirrored images of flowers.
Then we use the profusion of flowers and butterflies as our link to the next painting, where the background has a profusion of organic elements.
Julie Held: Self Portrait (Link)
Tumblr media
Something about the strangeness of the composition appeals to me. My eyes explore the background, trying to figure out what is going on (is it upside down?) before returning to the awkward, sketch-like figure in the corner.
Next up is Barbara Leidl's "Dominic (and Bird)". (Link) We continue the theme of limited palettes.
Tumblr media
I love earth tones, and the bird on the figure's shoulder is absolutely perfect. The use of outline with minimal shading works so wonderfully well here. It's the drawing again.
Paul Gildea: "Boy with Necklace" (Link)
Tumblr media
A slightly impressionistic treatment, which is an enduring trend in contemporary painting, but the subject punches it above the mass. It makes me slightly uncomfortable, because the subject seems so beautiful but vulnerable and uncomfortable too. My sense of propriety doesn't quite know what to do with this image.
Maxim Langford: "Arnold" (Link)
Tumblr media
The shifts in value, light and line work in this one are incredibly satisfying to see, they scratch some kind of an itch for me. Also I am very partial to profiles, I just think profile portraits are the most interesting and beautiful.
Shadi Vahabzadeh: "The Daughter of the Sun" (Link)
Tumblr media
We are once again nearing abstraction, and here I particularly like those pattern fills on the skirt and the vase, and the lighter area in the background. They connect well to the way the shirt and hair of the previous drawing were also only sketched out as shapes.
Shanti Panchal: "The Book of Revelation" (Link)
Tumblr media
This one combines together a lot of elements that I find particularly enjoyable: the profile view, the combination of line art and subtle shading, surrealist influences, and even the combination of the yellow sofa and the grey background is right up my alley (because I run an aesthetic blog for the colour grey called @grey-in-color and my friend does one for yellow called @marigoldserenity and one year Pantone chose grey and yellow as the colour combo of the year).
And we close the portrait section with a painting that is only dubiously a portrait (though every foot fetishist worth their salt will tell you that you can recognise a person from their feet).
Sharron Astbury-Petit: "Reclining with Venus". (Link)
Tumblr media
It connects to the above painting in several subtle ways: the style of line art and shading is similar, there are nude figures in both; but also the contrast between the flat grey background of "The Book of Revelation" and the profusion of colours and organic shapes in "Reclining with Venus" - which one might expect to find in a painting inspired by Indian miniatures. I also really enjoy the subtle touch of the bird tattoo on the ankle, which matches the busy vibe of the background.
Still Life
The next segment is paintings of objects, still lifes. We'll start with William Pierce's "Trainers" (Link), which carries us nicely over from the previous image of feet.
Tumblr media
Here too the vibe is nearing abstraction and sort of impressionistic-ish, but what can I say, a trainer (sneaker, running shoe, tennis shoe, whatever you call it) is such an iconic object that it just always works.
Jason Line's "Bric-a-brac" (Link) also has shoes in it, and a similar sketchy feel.
Tumblr media
I also find this perspective kind of strange and interesting, looking at things from above, as if they are laid on the floor. Like logically I reckon that is a table, but to me the feeling is of floor for some reason.
The next painting by the same artist continues the floor vibes: "Still Life with Shell" (Link)
Tumblr media
But here more than the weird perspective vibe, I love the colours. Look at all that amazing grey, which is accentuated by the pink shell and the blue bottle (it's called "@grey-in-color" for a reason).
Claire Venables: Recreating the By-Product (Link)
Tumblr media
Similar vibe here, with the way the shapes work, and with the colours. This is aesthetic manna for me. Also blue is my wife's favourite colour, so I do pay more attention to it due that. The subject is also fascinating, it is not common to see science as the subject in visual arts, especially in traditional mediums like painting.
Agata Smolska: Arrangement in Yellow (Link)
Tumblr media
And here we have grey and yellow meeting again! But I just really find any and all colours in the same image with grey to be really compelling. Everything goes great with grey. The subject is also another great example of elevating the mundane, with paper cups and napkins (and a lemon for some reason? What are they serving?)
Misc
We finish this exhibition with a grab bag of paintings that don't quite fit any of the above categories. Which I think is important, you always need to have space for things (and people!) that don't fit into your neat little labels.
First we have "Not Forgotten" by Aidan Potts (Link) which could be a still life, or a portrait of a flower. That's actually something I have thought about a lot, plant portraiture.
Tumblr media
By now you know my thing well enough to see it right away: I am here for the grey and the colours. I also love the challenge of the title, because a plant growing in a crack in the sidewalk is pretty near to being forgotten, despite still fighting. Which reminds me: Free Palestine.
Toby Ward: Bike Repair Station (Link)
Tumblr media
Here again appears my beloved line art with lively flat areas of colour, and the elevation of the mundane. But I also love the subject matter, because bicycles have been important to me throughout my life.
And last, "The Bar at The Bull" by the same artist (Link).
Tumblr media
We finish with a painting that I can't quite explain what it is I like about it, because it just goes straight into my feelings without passing Go. It reminds me of something that I don't have anymore, even though I never had it. This one for me connects to Harpo Marx and how important he is to my life, but the connection is too convoluted to try to explain. But what is more useful to explain is the fact that this connection exists and is the reason I am drawn to this painting. Because there's no way the artist was making this painting thinking that I would connect to it through some convoluted Harpo Marx connection.
Instead this painting being the finisher in my little online exhibition is an illustration of the fact that we see in art what we bring to it as much as what the artist and the subject bring into it. We mix it all together in our brains and get some sort of experience out of it. And that's pretty much all there is to art. It is a form of communication you cannot achieve with any other form.
-
Thank you for reading/looking, I know that was a lot and I did it mainly for myself, but I'm glad you were here along for the ride.

About me
10/09/2024: If you visit this page often enough, you'll realize that I moved from Wordpress to Tumblr. Although I'm going to miss the flexibility of the Wordpress designs, Tumblr is a perfectly suitable tool for my portfolio and my blog, as it has been since 2010 when I first landed on this site.
About QuietDuna
I'm QuietDuna, aka Nuria Espinoza. I'm a +40 old Spanish artist. I love to create about my hiperfixations and to create illustrations for my work at Médecins Sans Frontières.
I began creating comics, fanfictions and illustrations very early as a child, but in 2013 I did a big step by learning digital art and beginning to sell some of my designs as merchandising because someone at the Internet asked me to.
Since then:
I had several designs featured at Shirtpunch (and other websites I don't remember the names) over the years
I've created several online stores, being my Etsy store the most popular of them. Sadly it was banned due to copyright infringement in 2022. I still keep a Redbubble, Teepublic and a Neatoshop store.
I had a Patreon for almost 2 years with a bunch of amazing people all over the world that followed my rambles and weekly publications. I closed it at 2022 due to personal reasons.
I've published more than 1100 pages of comics dedicated to Escaflowne and created since 2011. I have received messages from people telling me how my stories touched them. That's my most important achievement in my artist career.
Tumblr media
I've created several fanzines /doujinshis. I have 7 issues of my own "Escaflowne Tales". But my most popular one and the one that has sold a lot of digital copies is my Dr.Stone Senhaku story that you can find here.
Of course, I had many of my designs printed as tshirts, buttons and magnets, and also showed at exhibitions at my job for internal events. You can check it here.

May- K/S Newsletter!
(You can find the complete post in our newsletter. There is quite a lot of info so I only put the highlights!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear K/S Friends, Summer is upon us, and we have mail for you! This time our newsletter is dedicated to only two topics, but they are so important that they warrant their own issue. 1. KiScon 2024 – Hotel Reservations:
We are happy to announce that room registration for KiScon is officially OPEN!
Our venue, the Seattle Airport and Conference Center, is now accepting room reservations for KiScon 2024!
Basic Information About The Rooms:
There are two types of rooms available to book. Rooms with one single king bed have a maximum occupancy of two people. Rooms with two double beds have a maximum occupancy of four people. Our group discounted room rate is $164 per night, plus hotel taxes and fees. Con group rates are good until the room block runs out! (See newsletter for specifics)
2. The KiScon 2024 Art Show & Auction
As KiScon 2024 is a hybrid con with an in-person AND online art show and auction, these traditional and much beloved parts of the convention are more complicated than they were at a purely online or purely in-person event. In the following, we are trying to explain everything as clearly and concisely as we can. Should you still have questions that have not been answered here, please get in touch with us at [email protected].
First things first, the art show and the auction usually have a certain overlap, but you can sell artworks at the auction that are not featured in the art show, and you can submit art to the art show that is not for sale. You do not need to be a registered attendee to submit art to the art show or to the auction!A. The Art Show
The art show aims to showcase a great variety of K/S fanart, trying to convey how rich in talent and creativity our fandom is.
To ensure that both in-person and online attendees can enjoy the show, it will be presented via a slideshow vid that will be accessible online throughout the convention weekend (and afterwards on our website). We will also show it on the big screen during the opening ceremony on Friday night.
In addition there will be space in the Rec Room at the hotel to host a small exhibition and show physical artworks that attendees bring to the convention in person. If you plan to bring physical artworks to the con, please do not forget to submit a photo or scan of it to the art show vid, so that our online members can also marvel at it.
For all submissions to the art show, please use our online form. Deadline: 15 September 2024.
B. The Auction
You do not need to be a registered attendee to offer items in the auction, but only attendees (in-person or online) are able to bid on items.
What is accepted for the auction?
Traditional, physical artworks:paintings, drawings, prints, but also three-dimensional artworks like sculptures, amigurumi, fibre craft, jewellery etc.
Digital artworks or hybrid artworks (e.g. a drawing on paper that you digitally altered afterwards); AI-art is not permitted, without exception. Digital items will be delivered to the buyer as high-resolution files; it is sensible to include clear information what rights the buyer acquires along with the artwork, i.e. what the buyer is allowed to do with the file (e.g. use it as illustration for their fic on the AO3? use it to prettify their website?)
Trek merchandise or collectibles (mugs, T-shirts, plates etc.)
Trek zines (especially rare editions), pro novels (especially hard-to-find ones)
The item must be K/S or K&S or Star Trek in general.
You must be the rightful owner of the item that you offer for sale or have express permission from the owner if you sell it for someone else.
In the case of artworks this means: you do not need to be the artist, but you need to be the current owner of the artwork; the artist’s permission is not needed.
(sorry folks, that's the limit for this post!)

Artistic Accessories: PansyAss Ceramics
Note: All links in this post lead to sites which include NSFW images.
Spring is here, Pride Month is just around the corner, and Harvey Guillén is accessorizing for the season! Harvey was photographed out and about over the weekend in a pair of necklaces from artistic duo PansyAss Ceramics.
Tumblr media
The artists' Instagram also posted two photos of Harvey modeling the necklaces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But these aren't just a pair of cute accessories (though they are also that)! PansyAss Ceramics is known in Toronto and beyond for its celebration of queer life, love, sex, and culture.
The two artists, Andy Walker and Kris Aaron, have described themselves as "two Toronto boys making your Grandma’s china, favorite knick-knacks and tchotchkes just a little bit more gay!" (Source)
Since 2015, the two have been transforming grandma's good china and favorite tchotchkes into works of art that are proudly queer and quite often feature nudity, sexually explicit imagery, or suggestive wording. (Source)
In addition to their online store, the two have exhibited their art in galleries such as Toronto bookshop Glad Day's Glory Hole Gallery and the DAIS Gallery.
The Candy Heart pendant comes in many color and word variations (my personal favorite is the one that says Yes Homo) and is $99.
The Floral Padlock Choker comes in small and large sizes and also has a few different color and chain variations. Harvey is wearing the small pink variation on a silver chain (which seems to be currently sold out). The small padlock is $99; the larger one is $120.
You can learn more about PansyAss Ceramics at their website.

quick tip for art research: if you are researching something which belongs to a museum, check the item's page on their website (if the website extends to them--the big guys nearly always will). often, museums include a list of publications and exhibitions that the piece has appeared in, which is a fantastic starting point. if the museum doesn't have those lists online, but does have a library, email them about it. even if you don't get a comprehensive list, they'll likely have something on hand, even if it's just for docents to use.
if the piece isn't in a museum, see if it's sold at auction anytime recently. auction houses (christie's and sotheby's are the big ones, but there are others and a lot of them have pdfs of their catalogs online) include publication history along with provenance (who has owned a work) as part of their research as a matter of course. additionally, if the artwork is by a major artist or from a major collection, there might be a juicy essay on the piece also.

H.R Giger, 1940-2014
(Long) list of works:
1, 2 and 3: What I assume are early versions of the Pisces, Capricorn and Ares statues from Giger's 'zodiac fountain' project, 1996. Pictures by Louis Stalder from https://www.hrgiger.com/zodiac.htm
4 (and 6): The "Harkonnen Chair" series. 1981, created from fibreglass for the never completed film 'DUNE' (dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky). 4 is from https://www.hrgiger.com/chairs.htm (no image credit)
5 (and 28): Giger's microphone stand designed for the band 'Korn', in roughly 2001. 1 of 5 works in that series. (side note the website I found it on through google images is a gaming website that also apparently hosts pictures of Giger's Korn mic stand??) also referred to as 'Nubian Queen' on his website.
6: See 4
7: Concept art of the "space jockey" in 'Alien', 1979. Giger also directed the creation of the alien and set (!!).
8: 'Mirror Image' 1977, airbrush painting.
9. Depiction of the alien life cycle for the 1979 'Alien' film.
10. part IV of Giger's N.Y City portfolio, 'Torso 456'. 1980-1982.
11. One of the 'Birth machine baby' sculptures, inspired by the 1967 drawing "Birthmachine".
12: Part of the 'Erotomechanics' series, 1979.
13: I couldn't find much on this one, on Giger's website it is called 'Bei Sydow-Zirkwitz' and the image I found of it is an (unverified) print being sold online that claims to be an original lithograph/stone print from 1976. Also calls it "Promethius New York city." They seem to be largely the same, I just chose this one for higher quality.
14. 'Homage to S. Beckett I', 1968 (This series is one of my favourites and this one is often linked to Dali's painting 'The Great Masturbator', which I thought was interesting).
15, 16: Photographs by Pino Carafa, from Giger's Nov-Dec 1996 exhibition in Milan. The head has a placard that looks like it reads 'Mask 11', but with a quick look into it I couldn't find a proper name or identification for these pieces except for their presence in the past exhibits on the HR Giger website.
17: 'Drawing for sil/Sil's baby', 1994 (?) a sketch I only found because of the Giger database which is an amazingly detailed and and easy to access record of literally everything Giger ever did, here it is (https://www.littlegiger.com/gigerdb/index.php) the images are tiny however :(
18: Noracyclin (contraceptive-pill) 1965, same source as above - H.R Giger has said this and the 'birthmachine'/baby theme throughout his work are (partly) demonstrations of his fears for the planet due to overpopulation
19: From the page on Giger's website about the bars across the world that use his designs and imagery. The image is an example of the bar in Gruyères, Switzerland, which opened in 2003.
20, 21 and 24: 'Biomechanoid' statues, the one with the green/blue finish created 2010, the silver one 2002.
22: A photograph of H.R Giger and a model from one of the 'Alien' films. From the Giger Work Catalogue, image owned by Matthias Belz, as are 20, 24, 25 and 26.
23: 'The Great Beast', Giger's concept art for the 1985 film 'Poltergeist'.
24: See 20 & 21
25: 'Guardian Angel', sculpture from 2002. Could also be the rusted version.

Paintings by Josefa Teixidor, also known as Pepita Teixidor (1875-1914). Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.
Josefa Teixidor is considered the best flower painter in the Catalan Modernist movement, an art movement where flowers and nature were very present. She was celebrated during her life, and she was chosen as one of the three artist who would represent Catalonia in the Universal Exhibition held in Paris in 1900, together with Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol.
Despite the recognition of her work, at the time women weren't usually allowed to exhibit their work in art galleries. Josefa Teixidor, together with other Catalan women artists of the time like Lluïsa Vidal, Visitación Ubach, Antònia Farreras, and Maria Lluïsa Güell, fought for the right of women to exhibit their art in Barcelona. Her success allowed her to exhibit her work here and also in France. She was also involved in the Catalan feminist magazine Feminal, that gave support to and published about the work of women artists, scientists and industrials.
She was awarded both in Catalonia and in France. Soon after her early death at 39 years old, she became the first woman who was neither a saint nor a queen to have a statue dedicated to her in Barcelona, Catalonia's capital city. (Even nowadays, Barcelona only has 14 statues of women who aren't saints nor queens, and that is including fictional characters. For comparison, Barcelona has at least 168 statues of real men in that category).

Inauguration of Josefa Teixidor's bust in Barcelona's Parc de la Ciutadella public park. 1917. Catalonia National Archive.
Tumblr media
Bust to Pepita Teixidor nowadays.
Sadly, most of her work is owned by private collectors, only the three paintings included in this post are owned by a museum (MNAC). However, MNAC owns a huge collection and exhibits only a fraction of it, and none of Josefa Teixidor's works are displayed.
While making this post, it was difficult to find images of her work in good quality, because for some reason MNAC didn't have her works uploaded to their online catalogue. I sent them a message about it, and they answered the next day with the three works uploaded on their website (many things can be achieved by complain at the right people!). I hope making these paintings publicly available, together with this post, will make Josefa Teixidor more present in our minds. Sadly, she has been forgotten by most of society, while her male contemporaries like Rusiñol and Casas are still among the most famous artists of all times in our country. When we think of Modernist painters, from now on I hope we also think of Josefa Teixidor.

National Museum of Women in the Arts
Online Art Exhibition: Wanderer/Wonderer: Pop-ups by Colette Fu
Collette Fu crafts enormous pop-up books that are so detailed—they resemble mazes—that illustrate myths and legends and shed light on lesser-known cultures.
First Picture:
This is a picture of Collette Fu creating her art piece.
Second Picture:
Title: Dai Food from the "We Are Tiger Dragon People" collection.
Concept: The Dai people, an ethnic minority in China's Yunnan Province, are acknowledged in this work. The photographer documented the area and its residents for three years. These pieces served as inspiration for this artwork.
Presentation: This book is about 60 pounds, it consists of ultra-chrome pigment ink, and Epson-enhanced matte paper mounted onto a cougar. The book has a smooth cover paper made up of black iris cloth. Its dimensions are 17x25x10.5 in. Featured in this piece in the Dai people's cultural foods. There is a young Dai woman who is cooking, she has her hair up and is decorated with flowers, she is wearing cultural attire and has an apron around the waist. I can pick out foods like kebabs, a pig`s head, grilled chicken, beef with red peppers, and spicy noodles. I also can see a type of leaf that is used to wrap food. This art piece incorporates a variety of colors and shapes.
I am quite the foodie. I think many of us who live in America and are not Chinese have this image of what "Chinese food" is. But just like many cultures, there is a variety of dishes. What I love about this artwork and find most fascinating about it is the 3D effect, the dishes look as if I could hold them.
Third Picture:
Title: Robin Museum (from Haunted Philadelphia), 2005-2006
Concept:
"Fu found inspiration for this book in the tragic story of young lovers who met secretly in the garden of Philadelphia`s Robin Museum. After the young woman`s family sent her away to try to break up the romance, she returned home to discover that her beau had been killed in the Vietnam war. Devasted, she went alone to the museum, found it locked, and was killed by a car as she dashed across the busy Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Fu associated this story with the unhappy love affair between French sculptor Camille Claudel (1864-1943) and Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), her mentor." (“Wanderer/Wonderer: Pop-Ups by Colette Fu | Online Exhibition”)
Presentation: This book is about 60 pounds, it consists of ultra-chrome pigment ink, and Epson-enhanced matte paper mounted onto a cougar. It has a smooth cover that is held by glue and Chinese joss paper with newspapers. Its dimensions are 53x36x21 in. Featured in this piece is Fu`s spin on the Robin Museums garden. We see fall leaves all around, and trees in the background that surround the centerpiece. Within the trees, sculptors are sticking out. These sculptors are pieces of Robin and Claudel`s work. In the center is a sculpture of a man and woman, representing Robin and Claudel.
This piece is very different from the second picture. The Dai food is colorful, and fun and creates a lively vibe. But in this art piece, there is a type of gloomyness and sorrowful attitude.
I don`t want to take away from you exploring these pieces yourself. Other artworks were presented in this art exhibition, I encourage you to check them out as well and learn of the stories that brought them together.
Fourth Picture:
Title: Ashima, (From the collection "We Are Tiger Dragon People"), 2008-2014
Fifth Picture:
Title: A Pop-up Book of Lillies, Roses, Iris, Pansies, Columbine, Love-In-A-Mist, Larkspur, And Other Flowers In A Glass Vase On Table Top, Flanked By A Rose And A Carnation, 2023

Is writing fanfic, making fan art, or cosplaying considered scabbing/crossing the picket line? The general consensus online seems to be that it’s okay if you aren’t being paid by any of the struck companies and don’t have any plans of joining either the WGA or SAG-AFTRA (at least that’s the impression I got), but what if you might want to join either organization someday? It might be a long shot and I totally understand if you don’t really have an answer because the rules of making/consuming fan content during a strike seem pretty ambiguous at the moment, but I’d really appreciate any information you could give me! Thanks!
Hello! In most cases no, it's not scabbing. Fanfic especially is safe because it's not monetizable or ever used in studio marketing.
Fanart and cosplay can be trickier because they can be used as an arm of studio marketing—think about the phenomenon of popular fanartists being contracted to create art to promote a new season of a show, or cosplayers officially partnering with brands to do cosplays of characters to promote a show. In cases like that where influencers meet SAG-AFTRA's definition of a social media influencer, fanart/cosplay might be scabbing!
Here's SAG-AFTRA's definition of an influencer, right from their website:
"Influencers are popular content creators who have amassed a social media following that they capitalize on by making deals with advertisers to promote brands through the Influencer’s creative content which they distribute through their social media feeds.
Influencers exhibit their content through personal feeds on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, SnapChat, Pinterest, etc.
Followers can range from a few hundred to a hundred million
This provides a “one stop shop” for advertisers:  The Influencer provides performance, stills, posts, production, creative, editing, directing, lighting, distribution, etc.
Agreements between Influencers and advertisers vary significantly. There are no set rates and other terms can be very different as well."
Your average Tumblr user is not an influencer and can't scab because you're not remotely affiliated with the industry, and couldn't really be seen as doing marketing for the studios. So a good rule of thumb is not to do anything that could fall under the influencer agreement! But regarding your question, fanfic is totally in the clear, and fanart/cosplay is a case-by-case basis.
If fanart/cosplay is something you do a lot of, and you're wondering how to keep up content on your account, one idea is to focus on fanart/cosplay of non-US shows/films with no association with the struck studios, or switch to books/audio dramas/comics and other works that are definitely not struck!
