A lot of Riders could have benefited a lot from meeting Godai himself, even Onodera.

I know, I'm a Kuuga fan, so it's weird for me to ask, but... what does each of Kuuga's forms (Growing, Mighty, Dragon, Pegasus, Titan, Rising Forms, Amazing Forms, Ultimate, and Rising Ultimate) symbolize when it comes to Onodera's character?

Okay so first I do need to point out something kind of important and it’s that YUUSUKE DOES BOT HAVE THE RISINGS OR AMAZING.

This is going to get relevant later because Yuusuke sort of jumps that slow fall middle bit of Kuuga, and there’s a reason.

Okay so the base forms are mainly a versatility thing. They have roughly equal power just in different fields. Different situations, different forms. We even do see Yuusuke use the other forms every now and then, but Yuusuke…

So Onodera Yuusuke is a Main Rider who has WILLINGLY become a support Rider. All of his forms come from this change. We only see him use Dragon Pegasus and Titan on his own World, mainly, because that is where the reality of “Kuuga” is central. The story is running on obligation. “Yuusuke” becomes “Kuuga”. He fights the ULFs. I’m sure we’d have seen a very different progression if this “simple” story kept going. And I’m sure we’d see the original progression of forms. I’m ALSO sure that this running on obligation story would have gone much worse

We didn’t see that, though. Did we?

We got Tsukasa.

Okay so going from the basic set to RISING ULTIMATE is just a fascinating choice to me. Yuusuke skips all the middle in part because he is forced but the other part is like the central purpose of Yuusuke as a character and it’s that, through Tsukasa, Yuusuke has fully broken free of the narrative, he is not good because he has to be but because he wants to be. He is, yes, brainwashed and beat up over and over, but because of that, he isn’t afraid of Kuuga.

Why?

Because of Decade.

Yuusuke is not afraid of Ultimate, or Rising Ultimate, because he isn’t alone. Because his tragedy was halted in its tracks. Instead, this power marks facing the darkest parts of the man he chose to center in his life (but not selfishly, no. He did it because Tsukasa needs him, and the Worlds need them both, and it’s the right thing to do) through the darkest parts of his own powers.

He knows they are dark, too. “Then I’ll become the devil myself” and all that.

The central point of Yuusuke as Kuuga is the power of bonds to truly break the control and fear of darkness. And through them, Yuusuke can go from Mighty to RISING ULTIMATE, with very little in between, free from the tragic fear and loneliness that would usually makes Kuuga so utterly heartbreaking.

If Godai is “it shouldn’t have been you, but it had to be you, and I’m sorry”, Onodera is “it shouldn’t have been you, but it can be you, and you aren’t alone anymore”

If Kuuga goes in clean, dragging order, it is the tragedy of war. If it trips and falls into the power of darkness, it is the hope within of love.

2. A headcanon that you weren't sure about at first but have come to like: Ohhhhh this is a hard one because I tend to get. Very attached to my own headcanons very quickly? Like, once I decide on something, my brain "yes, good, this is true". Like, the idea that Marvelous is from a species with a healing factor, and a distinct wandering culture, and he has only vague recollections of it that sometimes heal and sometimes fester? I will go to my grave certain that's true.

Or Onodera Yuusuke having lost his sibling along with his parents (depending on if I'm feeling like playing with a genderfluid Yuusuke or not may be the older or younger who died). That one's stuck around.

For stuff outside toku, I'm legitimately having to reread canon to have a chance of figuring out how many of Asmodeus' issues with religion and God are Actually There and how much are my ex-Catholic religious trauma leaking through...

Also Lang is a werewolf in Ace Attorney. He just is. So's Tyrell Badd. I have had to stop myself when writing gift fics and go "wait, no, this is not Actually True".

4. I feel like I am Bad At This because I cannot think of many ships that I don't really go there for? I am usually pretty open to ships! My Kingohger potential shipping polycule is Ridiculous. In toku especially I tend to open up my shipping horizons. Like, I did not ship Shotaro and Phillip during the majority of the show; I liked their friendship. But after the anime, I'm pretty open to the foursome of Shotaro/Phillip/Akiko/Terui. Which I guess still isn't Shotaro and Phillip! I understand why people ship them; they've got a great rapport, they're the two-in-one Kamen Rider, Shotaro mourned dysfunctionally for a year. They just don't really do it for me on their own.

8. I hope more people will come to appreciate all of toku! It's such a fun genre, and we could always use more talented people in it. Come think about hope and joy and the power of friendship with us, while never neglecting the trauma inherent in being human and mortal and living in an imperfect world and a vast dangerous universe!

But more than anything... I hope more people will read the Dominion of the Fallen books and come be fannish over them with me. It's such a tiny little fandom. It deserves so much more love. There's so much potential! Fusion crossovers would be amazing! Come read about traumatized Fallen angels and the horrors of colonialism with me! Ship the stabby murdery Fallen angel and his sweet cinnamon roll husband with me!

Regarding the talk of characters like Keiwa or Neon being Kamen Riders out of suit due to helping people regardless if having powers or not…. there must be a handful of supporting characters throughout Kamen Rider franchise that also fit the bill, but that being overlooked so much due to them being mocked as "useless" instead (Keiwa and Neon still has more combat stuff in them than those supporting).

I suppose there are. I haven't seen much of Rider Discourse (except for some of the Geats ones, and even then, discourse came to me first), but I can certainly imagine that being the case.

Something similar comes to mind when it comes to Yugioh and characters who don't, or just rarely duel - like Anzu and Honda from DM (they don't duel at all in the manga, the anime just gave them a few duels), or Kotori and the rest of the Numbers Club from Zexal. They get soooo much shit from fandom for not being duelists, and whatever support they give is brushed off and deemed useless. Which, on one hand, I understand that in these franchises, duels or transformations often accompany or signify character development. On the other hand, these characters' positive qualities are ignored by the fandom for the lack of duels/transformations.

Decade AU Aruto would still be Aruto, but he'd be Aruto Denhi or something. Decade alternate Riders all had the same given name but a different family name. Ex: Yuusuke Godai (Original) vs Yuusuke Onodera (Decade), Takumi Inui (OG) vs Takumi Oogami (AR). This was really weird for Kabuto, since in that show almost everyone was called by family names. So they just called their Kabuto and Gatack Soji and Arata, no last names, since nonone ever called Tendou and Kagami by those names.

Aah I see. Full disclosure I'm always bad at memorising which is the family name and which is the given name, especially since english fan sources are incredibly inconsistent on how they're ordered. So I never quite get it right

Ngl, as someone who didn't mind Onodera, and sees your headcanons about Onodera being the one to appear more...Yeah, I can easily see that. Like really, poor Godai REALLY needed to rest. Also, fun thought: you think Onodera eventually learned how to use the normal Rising Forms (Rising Mighty, Rising Dragon, Rising Pegasus, and Rising Titan), and Amazing Mighty alongside the possible other 3 Amazing Forms (Amazing Dragon, Amazing Pegasus, and Amazing Titan)?

I do think Yuusuke probably has the upgrades, yeah! He gets into all sorts of problems so it just makes sense.
