zakki:re Q&A replies megathread

A translation megathread of the zakki:re Q&A contest letters Ishida sent back to winning contestants!

As far as I know there were 100 winners, though I only have around 40 in this post. There were more on Twitter, but some opted not to release them publicly on Twitter for personal reasons (such as if they asked personal questions). Some didn’t reveal their question, or all of Ishida’s replies, but I’ve tried my best to guess at their meaning if possible.

The ones I’ll post here are from Twitter, specifically if they came with pictures of Ishida’s art or handwritten replies. I’ll also mention some context if I felt that the conversation/topic between the OPs and Ishida was interesting.

If you see one that I missed, please let me know and I’ll update this post.

OP is jealous, and his father is smug/happy about it lol (there’s a photo of him holding the zakki:re letter with a glove, with the letter itself wrapped in plastic, with a giant smile on his face).

Also a bit sadder to mention, but OP’s maternal uncle passed away from esophageal cancer. Hearing that his son (so OP’s cousin) has all the TG volumes, OP borrowed the letter from his dad to show to his cousin, which made the cousin happy.

Ishida: Isn't something like that decided at the very end? You're admirable. Please do your best to stay till the end.

I read through the documents related to Countermeasures [most likely something to do with the United Front] , and summarize my opinion on it until noon. Time for lunch. Since Touka-chan went out to the shop, I make lunch for Ichika using the rice I bought. "It tastes better than Mama's," she said, so I replied, "Keep that a secret from Mama." In the afternoon, I think I'll take a short walk with Ichika, and try visiting Anteiku with her.

Ishida replied to their tweet, and it seems like the question OP asked was about his favourite kind of rice or onigiri since Ishida mentioned something about koshihikari, a type of rice.

From 1st grade of junior high! I'm happy to hear that. It may look like a "butterfly", but specifically it's a moth called a mock swallowtail butterfly moth. I drew it to symbolize the difference between humans and ghouls even though they look similar.

I’ll just summarize what I can figure out here since so much of it is concealed.

Higemaru - I think OP asked about how Higemaru ended up working for the CCG because it talks about his history at the Academy and the Qs. Also that Hige really looks up to Urie and wants to keep working with him.

Akira - I think OP asked for advice on dealing with the difficulties with their transfer family, because Ishida suggests using phrases such as, “I see...” or “That’s why~!”. (The alternative is Akira giving Inoue-san (from the transfer family) a Mado Punch lol)

Uta - A personal question, in which Ishida mentioned something about how if OP realized they messed up, and doing what OP needs to do.

Letter below Ui’s - Hide in :re volume 14, huh~ Kaneki also lost his way in OG volume 7 and :re volume 16. [Something about other guys like Naki, and something about how deciding the most important thing is difficult]

Oh dang the stand matchup idea sounds so cute????? I hope I came in time to get one 👀 I’ve named my stand Little Cry of the Abyss who’s ability is to copy others abilities to be as versatile as possible. However, the user can only copy one stand ability at a time and has to know a name that the copied user responds to. I mostly added the second limit because I thought it’d be too OP if it didn’t have it haha. In terms of personality, this stand has its own personality outside of its user (1/3)

It’s quiet, but open and a little shameless. Playful and sassy, this stand reflects the true feelings of it’s user but only if they’re not paying attention! When they’re not talking or distracted, this stand may cause mayhem... Visually this stand looks like a pose doll from an art store, but with modifications. It’s legs are streamlined to look like a ballerina and it’s fingers are sharpened to look like claws(this is mostly for physical encounters so the stand may stab) (2/3) It’s face looks like a Venetian mask carved out of a material similar to both jade and amazonite(the entire stand is made of this material but feels like silicone except for the hands). It’s got this big hat thing that extends from the face, similar the top of a carousel but it houses a large flower. I’m sorry this is so long, this really is a simple stand but I can’t write less 😂 THANK YOU SO MUCH (3/3)

I think MitM would be a great match for your stand! With his abilities he’d be able to give insider info on the names and abilities of your foe to know who to copy, along with helping you leave them defenseless in their mirror world! You’d be unstoppable!

Along with that, the Venetian masks match aesthetics! And the two of them could sit and sass together, I have a feeling that MitM is lacking none of his users attitude, so that won’t be a problem. MitM tends to be a bit quiet himself, but will follow along with all the chaos and trouble they can make together.

A bit of a trouble twosome if no one is looking, but they have no problem with it.

Bonus: A ship name could be Man of the Abyss, or Cry in the Mirror.

Hikaru×SPICE Live Broadcast ~ A summary/translation

I am finally home. Thank God the video got archived (at least for a week) so I can watch it right now and provide a more or less detailed summary.

Without further ado, let’s get started. 〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→

Takeshi Kato (=TK) is doing a short intro where he explains that they are doing a live broadcast to celebrate Hikaru’s birthday. Hikaru had reached out to them and asked if it would be possible to do a short-notice broadcast. They were more than happy to help out with that. The camera points to the side to reveal Hikaru. She greets everyone and says it’s been so long since the last time they did something like this. Hikaru talks about the reason she wanted to do this live so abruptly. It’s because she reached 15.000 followers on twitter and wanted an opportunity to celebrate that with everyone. Talking about celebration. TK wishes Hikaru a happy birthday. They bring out a cake for her and she also introduces her drink for the night - tapioca milk tea (as one would expect from Hikaru).

Hikaru talks about how she fell in love with tapioca milk tea when they went to Taiwan back in 2010. Ever since then she has had an obsession (something all of her twitter followers know about). Nowadays there is a huge tapioca boom in Japan so it’s very easy for her to find new drinks to try out. She always posts her collection. TK asks everyone to send in lots of comments, questions etc by using the hashtag #Hikaruバースデー Rumor has it that something good will be happening to one of the commentors at the end of the broadcast. Hikaru is like, “ohh, yeah, I think there will be”

TK reads out some comments, mostly birthday wishes, compliments about Hikaru’s beauty, messages of gratitude and talk about tapioca. In the background they always upload a different fan art and Hikaru tries to mimic the pose from the picture. Generally she is just being super cute.

They talk about how Hikaru started twitter at around October last year and how no one believed that it was actually her. Only when she posted some proof did people finally believe it was her XD

It’s been about a year since her last live (birthday event) so TK asks her what she has been doing during all this time. Hikaru replies that she started twitter, drank lots of tapioca, ate lots of food, went to the gym, watched anime, read manga and slept. TK wants to know how it feels like now that she is not doing one live after the other as used to be the case during her time in Kalafina, all that free-time must have been weird at first. Hikaru agrees but she also says that she is not really doing anything different now than she did before. Even during her Kalafina days she would always follow her hobbies if she wasn’t busy with Kalafina stuff. But now she has more time to focus on that and of course she always tries to learn more. Since she currently can’t expand her knowledge by doing lives she has made it a habit to attend lots of lives. She mentions attending the YK Live which took place last weekend in Chiba. She talks about taking selfies with Keiko and uploading them to twitter. TK asks how it feels like to be listening from the outside. Hikaru explains that Wakana and Keiko have always performed at YK lives in the past and it has always been different from Kalafina so it’s not really anything new for her but still it felt very nostalgic to watch the live. Time to continue with fan questions. One fan asks Hikaru to which extent she likes tapioca and Hikaru is super perplexed by that, “what kind of question is that?” TK explains that the person probably meant how she likes the texture of her tapioca bubbles or the amount. Hikaru explains that she likes a lot with black tea but not so many when she is drinking something fruity. Another viewer says that the entire family is watching the broadcast on a big TV screen. Hikaru gets super embarrassed and is afraid her face will look too chubby.

They talk a bit about Hikaru’s make up and how she had to do it herself for this broadcast. She has shared the stuff she uses on twitter and usually she doesn’t really change her make up items so it should all still be the same.

TK points out that all of Hikaru’s tweets have an English translation. Hikaru explains that she tries to connect with everyone as best as possible and since she has a lof of foreign followers she always makes the effort to post in Japanese as well as in English. Hikaru says it feels great to do a live broadcast like that because it makes her feel super close to us. Then there is a message from my friend Sai-chan who is from Thailand. Hikaru greets her and says something in Thai (I guess it’s a greeting?). Either way, it sounds super cute. She is asked to recommend the best tapioca but she really can’t because it depends on your personal preference. There is just too much to choose from so you have to decide for yourself what you like and what you don’t like. It’s really difficult to answer a question like that so Hikaru asks the viewers to change the topic to something other than tapioca. She then talks about her hair and how she is currently letting it grow. She doesn’t really go to the hairsalon or anything, she just lets it grow naturally. She really loves her short hair but right now she feels like having longer hair. She used to have longer hair in the first years of Kalafina, then she cut it and kept it short for a long time and now she wants to let it grow a little longer.

Hikaru is then asked why she is suddenly going to the gym even though she hates exercising.

She still doesn’t like it, it’s super tough (especially since she did zero work outs in the pasts) but with all the tapioca milk tea she drinks she just HAS to work out. Back in the day their live performances would be her work out but now she doesn’t have that anymore so she had to find another way to stay fit. This way she will be strong when she starts performing again. There is really no other choice for her than to go to the gym, she doesn’t really like doing any other sort of activity. Thb, she doesn’t even like any of the activities at the gym either. For her, everything is torture but she has to make that sacrifice at leasr once a week in order to be able to drink her beloved tapioca.

Hikaru is overwhelmed by all the birthday wishes and says she actually doesn’t really like to receive so many congratulations. She really prefers to be the one who does the congratulating so she suggests to sing a song. Hikaru asks if it’s okay if she sings a song a capella, she thinks it should be fine, after all they did sing a bit during their Kalafina broadcasts too. She wants to sing a birthday song, it might be weird since it’s actually HER birthday today but she is sure someone out there is celebrating their birthday this month as well. She is gonna sing “Happy Happy Birthday” by Dreams Come True. She wishes everyone a happy birthday, even those who don’t celebrate their birthday today. [Ahhhhh, I loved it. Didn’t even know the song but Hikaru rocked it.] Everyone is super happy about hearing Hikaru sing live and that she actually sang so much of the song. BIG ANNOUNCEMENT ahead. The tension is palpable. Hikaru becomes super serious. And then there it is. It has been decided that she will do a SOLO LIVE!! Waaaahhhh! FINALLY!

She has been worrying a lot and felt bad because everyone on twitter has beeng asking her to start singing again, everyone wanted her to be on stage again. On the one hand it made her happy to hear those words but it was also so very frustrating. She is glad she can finally make it happen. In her time as member of Kalafina she has learned one important lesson. If there is something you cannot do by yourself, you can borrow strength from others. It was hard for her to learn since she doesn’t like asking for help but sometimes it can be fine. You have to do it and there is nothing wrong about it. Kalafina heavily relied on that and right now she is also doing it. With the help of many people, her solo live is being made possible. TK suggests they make a tweet about the solo live and Hikaru thinks it would be a good idea to include a little selfie. While Hikaru makes the tweet, TK repeats all the important info regarding the live. After a couple of minutes she finally posts her tweet. Live tweeting SUCCESS.

Hikaru is scared because the venue can seat over 2000 people. She worries no one will come and the hall will be empty. She is like, “everyone, PLEASE COME! This would be the perfect birthday present for me!” She will do lots of covers (same as her birthday event) and she asks everyone to send in requests. And of course she want to create some live goods for her concerts. She wonders what she could make. Since it’s going to be winter time she thinks warm items would be nice. TK asks what kind of live it is going to be since this is her first time doing a proper solo live. Hikaru doesn’t know yet but she is currently worrying about it. She will inform everyone if there are any further infos but right now the most important thing for her is that she can continue singing, she will figure out the rest somehow. Things like whether she will have a band or not..

The first few live goods suggestions are cominng in: a pass case, a stola (Hikaru asks if guys would even wear those?), glasses case, tapioca keyholder, a hat (Hikaru says that her hat from the b-day event was really popular), book cover, eye mask, stationary set, tapioca straw, etc... Then we have some song requests: Platinum from CCC (which she also sang at her b-day event), Speechless from Aladdin, Zankokuna Tenshi no These, Evanescence songs, winter, X-Mas songs, Hirahara Ayaka’s Jupiter, anime OPs/EDs, musical pieces, etc...Hikaru is quite intimidated by some of the song requests because she doesn’t know if she will be able to do justice to them. I am too lazy to list all the song suggestions and honestly, I don’t even know some of the titles and artists. I am pretty clueless when it comes to singers other than Kalafina. Anyways, you get the idea. Hikaru is intrigued by almost every request. She says that she particularly loves anisongs (which we already know of course). They talk a bit about Kita Wing by Nakamori Akina, ever since she was super young she loved to sing this song at karaoke. Keiko would often mention that during their radio programs.

Then they talk about outfit ideas for the live. Should she wear a skirt or pants? TK notes that Hikaru usually likes to wear pants. Hikaru agrees, they are much more convenient, it’s easy to move around. Which is also why she ended up wearing pants so often during Kalafina lives. It was so amazing when she first got to wear pants for their FOTW live. Before that Kalafina’s image had all been about skirts. She had always wanted to wear pants so to finally get to do it felt great. At that point she felt courageous enough to ask if it would be okay and everyone at the office told her that it’s totally fine, of course she can wear pants. That’s when they decided to design pants and she never looked back. Hikaru would like to know what kind of silhouette the audience wants to see, what kind of colour scheme? The majority would prefer pants (short pants XD). Hikaru considers doing an outfit change during the live so she can try different types of clothing. Hikaru will think about wearing something red even though she is not used to that. Reddish colours were always more Keiko’s image whereas Hikaru often wore blueish colours. Someone suggests Hikaru should do cosplay, Hikaru is not exactly convinced by that idea. She asks if anyone even wants to see that...? She is not really the type to do cosplay. But there are definitely a lot of cool suggestions like Shiki from KnK. Lots of people want her to have a ponytail hairstyle but she is not suó sure about it.

They are informed that there are only five minutes left till the scheduled end of the program. Time to wrap things up. More than 2000 are watching the live broadcast at that moment. CONGRATS. TK is like, “what if all those people watching right now came to the live?” Hikaru would freak out.

More promo for Hikaru’s live. Hikaru begs everyone to come and to bring lots of friends. She hopes she can show a new side of herself to the audience that already knows her from Kalafina lives. But she also hopes that lots of new people will come who have never been to a Kalafina live. She is starting with a clean slate. She wants to be the kind of singer that conveys her feelings to the audience. For her, singing is not just about producing a lovely voice, it’s about having conversations with the audience. If it weren’t for us she wouldn’t be able to sing. Time is running out. Some more promo. Hikaru hopes everyone can read the info.

Hikaru talks a bit about how her character is very straighforward and that there are not a lot of changes when it comes to the things she likes. When she likes something she will like it forever.

Hikaru doesn’t know what the live will be like but one thing is for sure, she will be singing. She is sorry she can’t say more yet but eventually things will be put into shape. Once again she thanks everyone around her for making the concert possible.

Hikaru says she was super nervous because she did the broadcast all by herself. TK then tells her that her tag is trending on twitter. BANZAI. I’ve finally gotten around to the Ace Attorney anime

And boy am I disappointed so far!

Not sure I need spoiler breaks for an anime that’s already been out for a few years and a game that’s been out for over a decade in the states and more than fifteen years in Japan, but I’ll still pretend no one knows about the sled, so to speak.

FIRST POINT: Animation

Seriously, the animation is shit. I’m having flashbacks to Sailor Moon Crystal. I didn’t take a million screen caps of it like I did for Crystal, but type the following into Google and take a look: ace attorney anime bad animation. When Phoenix bows to Grossberg, his hands did the same thing Jadite’s did, and in the very beginning when he’s apologizing to Mia for being late, again, the hands. His hair spikes are constantly changing size, the 3D is egregiously terrible when they pan the courtroom in the first episode (not so bad when they don’t pan the model), and the gallery in the second trial (ep. 2-5) could have been made with better models back in the original game’s launch year...of the Japanese version!!! The use of effects only in the trial of ep. 1 just highlights further what a dumb idea it was (albeit one sort of taken from the live action movie), while the whole magic screens coming from the paneling thing seems just plain dumb given at this point the setting of the games has turned around and become “present day” instead of “fifteen years into the future.” Inconsistencies with things like Mia’s boobs and Phoenix’s hair spikes aside, the actual models they came up with...are pretty terrible, actually. Phoenix’s forehead is just plain wrong, Gumshoe’s head is all...something...Mia looks like she has an animation error instead of a mole, the whole makeup thing when Maya channeling is idiotic and kind of sexist when taken in context with the credits animation, Mia wears slight heels and is only 8 cm/3 in. shorter than Phoenix in the first place yet she’s way shorter standing next to him in court -- for that matter, Maya is 22 cm/8 in. shorter than Phoenix, yet she only seems to come to his collar. This tends to be true in all the official art that she’s absolutely diminutive, but it’s always irritated me there as well, so I’ll just grouse about that one on the entire franchise.

On pan outs, the judge is literally a tan ball with a beard. Contemplate that quality kwality for a second.

SECOND POINT: Sound

The use of music from the games is a lot more understated than I was expecting, which is a crying shame because the franchise’s music is beloved by fans, and has been acclaimed repeatedly for years. When I did hear the motifs from the games, I started to feel a shred of hope for the anime. The opening is just fluffy nonsense, generic OP stuff that will be forgotten immediately and probably skipped if VRV will stop being a pain in the ass every time I jump around. I like that VRV gives me the option of dubbed or subbed. I also appreciate that if I go to Crunchyroll itself instead of its VRV channel, I can choose the English or Japanese names on the sub track. I wish that option was on VRV as well, just because I find it interesting, but meh. I don’t hate the credits song, but I’m not...happy with aspects of the animation on it. But that’s for character reasons, not technical ones.

THIRD POINT: Voicing

I’ve watched both the dub and the sub, and I have to say, I like the fan VAs better from the years of fan-dubbing of the games. Slightly British Edgeworth and scratchy Phoenix Wright are better than either official VA. That said, I like Japanese Wright and Maya better than English, and I was so disappointed when I heard Edgeworth’s lack of posh accent that I went immediately back to subtitles, which is a shame because this is the kind of franchise where I might have actually gone with the dub. And yet, that shrieky “WHAT” to open Ep. 4 in English...yeah, that lost me. Sorry, US English Maya.

FOURTH POINT: Subtitles

Just gonna say, just because they kept the English names for one of the subtitle tracks doesn’t mean they had to keep all of the localization aspects. Hearing Maya say “miso ramen, RA~MEN!” and seeing “burgers” gets weird. To be fair, this was similar to the dissonance I had to wrap my head around when Digimon Adventure Tri came out.

SIXTH POINT: Compression

Actually, no complaints. I think they’ve done well with what to cut and what to keep, and using the time they have to make the characters feel as over the top as they were in the games, so far. Little sad the cute moment where Phoenix carries Maya to the couch was lost, though.

FINAL POINT: Characterization

This section is mostly gonna be about Maya, but I’ll knock a couple other things out of the way, first. One is that Mia sounds a lot more...motherly, than I was expecting. Another is that it seems weird Maya heard Mia in Ep. 4 when that’s...not a thing. At all. The judge seems less like a doof so far, and Edgeworth’s pompous ass has yet to seem quite as pompous as it should. Gumshoe seems even less competent than usual, though, given his weird posing when entering the scene.

Maya got to point things out during the case and show signs of intelligence, which is nice, because half the fandom has her as Phoenix’s cool sis or something akin and recognizes her common sense wisdom and the other half has Crya the burger monster. In the games, Maya gets Phoenix to actually pay her share way less than in fanon. Her sprites present someone who’s a lot more solid and steady than the promo art does, which I’ve never been able to wrap my head around. I’d finish a game, unlock that final CG, and be like “wait, what?”

So then this anime comes out, and I hear her voiced, and I go, “Wait, so she is the high-pitched adorable mascot?” I’ve never understood the universal need for them in every single anime and take great joy in subversions like Kyubey and the “Fairy” guy in Mahou Shoujo Ore. It’s not that I don’t like them when done well, it’s just, if the series isn’t fantasy, they seem to squish a female into the role. “Mayushii-de~su.” Like that. So hearing Maya done like that...ew. Just, ew. It also makes her seem much, MUCH younger than 17. I moved out on my own when I was 18 and hadn’t come to terms with my gender, but I wasn’t sitting there with makeup to try to be more “adult,” either. I think most girls go through that, sure, but it’s more of a middle school thing. Even I did, and if 13 year old me (who wore makeup every day) was told “I have a magic ray that will make you a boy” I would have thrown my compact away and asked “Can you make it look like an accident? My parents are Fundamentalists.” And maybe I’m wrong for bringing my experiences into this, but then again, I’m not trying to give a professional critique, but my personal review, and in the end, that boils down to what I like and don’t like, which, meh, what can I say, I’m an innately selfish creature and myself doesn’t like seeing girls pressured to use makeup to be “grownups.” Sailor Moon always did that, too, and that’s one of my all-time favorites but LORD I hate that aspect, and hate that it’s persisted across adaptations for decades. I hate that Maya’s new look in SoJ has lip gloss, too. Like, “Hey, we back-stepped on all the growth at the end of AA3, so how can we show she’s matured?” “I know! Lip gloss!” “Perfect, give that guy a raise!”

CONCLUSION: I’m gonna go over to AO3 and read “Archeology” again because it’s the Ace Attorney characterization we all really deserved and probably still come back and watch the entire series, but I’m gonna pray really hard it improves as it goes. Maybe it got some actual money for the sequel seasions.

Cardcaptor Sakura episode 20 was pretty good! So Meiling is Syaoran’s cousin, and calls herself his fiance, and because she thinks Sakura might pose a threat to their relationship, she keeps trying to one-up her at everything, and adorable shenanigans ensue. Including Sakura doing like a cartwheel into a backflip into like one of those twirls where she just like flies around rotating every which way really cool and elegantly. What a great girl. Also we get to fight the uh, Fight card! The fight’s fun and goes through a lot of phases. At first, Meiling tries to take care of it and we get a pretty cleanly animated martial arts fight, but since it turns out she’s not even remotely magic she’s kind of outdone and has to be saved by Syaoran, who gets mad at her for endangering herself like that, but then Syaoran gets nearly knocked out since he didn’t actually defeat Fight, and then Meiling has to try again, only to be saved by Sakura after Tomoyo reminded her to use Power, and it was real fun seeing Sakura just, get a single bonk on Fight’s head and winning from that. Cool fight, I think Meiling’s a super cute character and she’s kind of fun as well, though I don’t tend to like her type of character in other shows, so even though I’m fine with her right now, I don’t know for sure if I’ll continue to be. Like, she definitely needs to grow and change a bit for me to not grow tired of her, at least. Also Sakura’s costume this episode is adorable, it’s like the one from the OP (are we ever gonna see that in the show proper?) but with a bit less frills and a bit more poof, despite being smaller, also it’s super duper pink. I thought she looked adorable in it. Nice episode. Also fuckin, turns out Touya’s a black belt in karate. Explains why he had an actual stance ready when he was gonna fight Syaoran that one time, lol.

Episode 21 was also great! It’s the school marathon, and first place is hotly contested between Sakura, Syaoran, and Meilin. The actual running part of the marathon is super fun, the OP plays as an insert song and slaps hardcore, that toy shop lady, I believe Maki was her name? Gets to reappear as a waving audience member, which was cute, and we’ve even got an aerial view thanks to Kero-chan in the sky, and he’s talking with Tomoyo so they can enjoy all aspects of the race together. That especially is super great, the way this show intertwines magical girl stuff with just, completely normal mundane things is really delightful to watch. Speaking of which, the Clow Card this time is Loop, a card that literally alters the I guess spacial reality of part of the track so that, Sakura and the squad end up finishing in last. That’s such a ridiculously powerful tool and I absolutely love and find it hilarious that it’s used in such a lighthearted and goofy way, no stakes allowed. This show’s just so comfy to watch all the time, I love it.

Next, episode 22. This episode was amazing, one of my favourites of the whole show so far. Sakura’s dad has a presentation next week, so Sakura and Touya just work mad hard and take care of all the chores and just operate at 10,000% niceness for the whole episode to make sure he can get his done work as best as possible in time with minimum stress. I adored this, it’s so comfy and sweet and I absolutely love seeing shows spend this much time with the main character’s family, they really let us love them. This help extends to Sakura visiting her dad’s university to bring him some stuff, but when we’re there the Sleep card starts fucking everything up, and after a very fun sequence with Sakura chasing it around, it’s sealed, but in the process Sakura kind of falls on and breaks her dad’s laptop which had all the work saved on it. This shocked me quite a fair bit, particularly since when Kero-chan wakes up, Sakura, shedding tears, asks what Clow Card could fix it, because she’s tried them all and none have worked, and all Kero-chan can say is that magic can’t solve everything. I wanna say this is the first time Sakura’s cried in the whole show and hell it nearly made me cry too. That thing I just said about comfy all the time is gone, something genuinely bad has happened and Sakura feels understandably awful about it. But actually, comfort and niceness shine through once again, because Sakura’s dad isn’t even remotely mad, he’s way too kind for that, and since it’s all in his brain anyway, he crams one last day in to get the presentation done, with Sakura helping out as an assistant since she really wants to make up for it. That’s, that’s so sweet. This brought me even closer to tears. The kind of emotional buildup to her dad getting his work done in time, and having that all be shattered with the uh, shattering of the laptop, but toughing it out through hard work and perseverance, as well as Sakura directly helping with the work rather than making sure dad’s able to do the work, it’s all super duper nice, I just loved this episode.

Last for today was episode 23, which was also delightful. Rumours of a ghost mean Sakura and friends have to sneak into the school again, and Sakura’s afraid because ghosts obviously but Kero-chan points out they snuck in to get the Shadow card as well. I appreciate the reference to past events, this show’s super episodic and slice of life most of the time but I think the continuity being present anyway is nice, you know? Anyway the ghost turns out to be the Song card, which for reasons is copying Tomoyo’s singing voice, and in order to make it appear so Sakura can seal it, Tomoyo actually has to sing for us! And first of all, her singing voice is delightfully pretty, like god damn she’s really really good at it. But also, I’m glad Tomoyo got to be such a key player in taking this one out. Obviously she’s helped out in the past but this episode straight up required her specifically to solve the problem at hand in a major way, and that’s super cool, real happy for her. Also Sakura actually gets Song out once she has captured it so she can record it and Tomoyo singing for Yukito, because another plotpoint of this episode is that Sakura was able to find the courage to go to the scary ghost school specifically because Yukito wanted to hear the ghost so Sakura wanted to record it. That’s cute, I can respect that. Good episode, a nice end for today’s viewing session. That’s all.

Edit: also Sakura's costume in the last episode is adorable, it looks kind of healer-y but also pink obviously and there are music notes on it since the episode's about Song, that was cute.

I find it interesting that Enta is now the initiator of the Sarazanmai and thus the one to steal the shirikodama. I mean, he used to be the one with the least stakes in the Dish of Hope scenario…and now look at him!

BSD 28 (S3 Ep 3)

Seriously, what are those metal things Dazai was wearing? Anyways, I like how it’s absolutely the norm that Chuuya swears now and I was part of forming that. Because I don’t swear a lot, I think Chuuya makes a nice outlet for my own frustrations...that’s what could be said, anyway.

D’aww. Someone acknowledges Chuuya’s identity. Ain’t that grand? (Now you see why I like Chuuya more than Dazai these days, huh?)

Come to think of it…a person hasn’t died in this show for a while, have they? It just goes to show you that despite one of its major stars being a guy obsessed with shinjuu (double suicide), the creators seem to be emphasising the sanctity of life itself.

Oh, I never thought they had an explanation for Dazai’s coat…

What is the age difference between Chuuya and Dazai anyway??? They’re both 15 during the LN that’s called that, but the exact difference…what is it? Update: Dazai’s birthday is June 19th and Chuuya’s is April 29th, so the difference is 1 month and 21 days (using the idea that 7 days = a week and May is 30 days, that’s 51 days in all).

Ooh, we’re getting Fyodor, Ace and the unnamed kid soon, aren’t we? That also means we’re in unknown territory for myself, too…hmm.

Comic Sans…you can’t escape it, even in this day and age…

Yude = to boil, soba…is the noodles. (The “o” on the end of the Monster of the Week’s first name means “man”.) Ikuhara uses Monster of the Week names in service of symbolism, while Takamatsu uses inconsistency for the sake of humour.

Intetestingly, there’s a spiralling blue thing in the background of the dance number and it says “soba” (katakana) and “desire” (yokubou, in kanji).

The headline translates to “Tragedy! It was next to me, but then…” (Kigeki! Sakki made soba ni ita noni…) The subbers had to accommodate the soba pun though, so they went with “so bar away”.

Hmm…now Toi takes centre stage…

How many times did Fitoria say “I’m going to kill the heroes” and Naofumi say variants of “no”? Because of that, I had half a mind to jump ship and head to RobiHachi instead…but keep going.

That cowlick stuff was probably the most fun I’ve had with this show in a while…heh.

Oh great��Naofumi expanded his pseudo-harem to two bird waifus…then again, I had a stupid grin on my face seeing Fitoria’s old master, so maybe it’s not all bad, y’know?

LOL, Nioino Fukuro. Basically “pouch of scent” when you insert a space between the second I and the second N and change the first name kanji, plus change the “no” to hiragana.

I know the title of the song is Kawausoiya (translates to “awful otters” or something like that), but “soiya” doesn’t make much sense on its lonesome.

Wait…does that mean Sara is the creature? Or there are two Saras that can look the same, but one looks like the human and one is more kappa-like???

For some reason, I’m getting changeling vibes here…that Kazuki wants to look different to the rest of his family because he knows he’s different.

Hey…there’s this thing called the tourist gaze. It argues that because people create notions of reality differently, people have different ideas of what makes a trip “good” and “authentic”. In the same sense, Haruka’s “false” connection with Kazuki!Sara has become his reality, so it’s not wrong to say this Sara is real for him.

Oh…I just realised some kanji that appar early in the OP are the kanji for “extraction”.

So, uh…in a sense…can I interpret Kazuki’s love for his real mother a Fruedian thing? It seems all men’s love can be interpreted to be Freudian in some way or another…also, Sara kind of looks like his mother in a very “surface” kind of way. That is, they have a very passing resemblance to each other. Update: I’ve been reading some Stephen King lately and if I took anything away from that experience, it would be that everything is Freudian when it comes to men’s experiences. That’s why I say that.

…*remembers something from the collab that was along the lines of “Astral doesn’t like Tanjiro’s green jacket”* Astral’s not gonna like this, then. (For those who don’t know the context, “Astral” is AstralGemini of the Zodiac Room.)

*Tanjiro is told he might not go very far with his demon slaying* *Tanjiro reacts with happiness that he’s on his way to get Nezuko human again* - Uh…I know I’ve watched my share of shonen, but I kind of didn’t expect that and yet also did.

Ugh…it’s the return of CGI Tanjiro…the vegie patch looks good in CGI though, for some reason.

Lemme guess…with a title like that (Swordsman Accompanying a Demon), could it be that Kazumi is a demon???

I love how the “gyaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” ended in blood splatter, literally.

The Park guys apparently come from ch. 44 but Katai comes from ch. forty…what? One? Two? It’s not 40 (Hitori Ayumu), that’s all I know.

Oh yeah…this is the chapter about the Headmaster…

I haven’t been in a good place mentally for the past few years or so, due to my world basically fragmenting around me, so the words “don’t hate yourself” are strong ones coming from a place both nostalgic and new.

Dazai inherits a particularly interesting space in Atsushi’s life. He’s like a brother and father wrapped up into one (Kunikida is the nagging mother in that analogy, LOL), but also obsessed with suicide to the point he can also be a liability.

It’s also interesting to compare Tohru (of Fruits Basket) and Atsushi. They’re both selfless, but Tohru’s selflessness is shown to be a double-edged sword while Atsushi’s gives him a lot of resentment but is overall a positive thing.

Aww…seeing Atsushi slowly tear up almost made me tear up too…

Fitzgerald Rising…that’s the name of the chapter where…oh, sorry. It’s been years, so I’ll let it all play out for you and me again without mentioning any spoilers until they happen in (close to) real time in the show, okay?

Been awhile (and nobody cares about this, but) One Piece chapter 910 talk!

Just recently got back into an OP mood (something my followers probably have noticed. Sorry! Know that’s not why most of you follow me.) which is a pretty good feeling tbh. I think I’ve at least temporarily achieved a state of mind where I’ll be able to not dwell on the flaws of this series too much (even though I’m not going to ignore them by any means), especially concerning the sexism and the role I wish female characters got to play...

anyway!

This cover story is really dragging, but Orlumbus seems to be a sweet guy, at least. Thought about this last week as well, but that town has some fun designs going on (even though it appears it’s quite sad more close up).

Chopper doing his best to fix the damages to the Sunny is so great! Love you, little guy! Also, kinda fun detail that we can see Sanji spying the contents of the newspaper from afar, leading up to the next panel (which as always is *sigh* just the way Sanji is I guess).

I mean, I’m never really a fan of this aspect of Sanji’s personality, but this panel is kind of funny considering the princesses and co. where in fact all chatting about Luffy a few chapters ago. Nami’s dismissive answer is great.

This is the cutest shit aaaaah (lmao at Sanji’s line, though. Arguably a good observation but RUDE).

Brook basically telling Luffy to be patient is <3 since he more than anyone has had to wait to be reunited with his loved one (those words feel kind of weird to use for a whale, but you know what I mean)

The den den mushi looks like it doesn’t appreciate Luffy screaming at its face. Also, who is it that’s entering the panel I wonder?~

A few things:

1. Nami’s new outfit is cute (obviously ridiculously short, but what else is new). Brook’s outfit has a very classic look which I very much like.

2. The way the octopus wasn’t mentioned for this whole 2-page spread made me think I’d missed a page somewhere when I first read this, and I had to go back and check (I didn’t notice the tentacle creeping in on the previous page the first time around). I love its design! it’s so great! Considering its headband, I wonder if it’s a carpenter?

3. You can already see on this page how the artwork mimics the style of classic japanese art à la The Great Wave off Kanagawa, which we get a very direct reference to a few pages later:

Man....this arc is gonna be so full of references to japanese culture, geography, mythology etc, and I know most of them are gonna fly right over my head, but I know about this one, at least! :D

....so I guess they got sucked in and then washed up on the shore? I wonder if the rest of the crew got washed up somewhere else..? And if so, are they all gonna be separated for a while? I hope the octopus gets paired up with someone fun (aka not Chopper. That’s be too convenient). I hope it’s Nami or Brook.

I’m excited about this arc! Granted, Oda is usually very good at exciting and promising starts to arcs, but the arc can later turn out to be a bit of a disappointment *cough*Dressrosa*cough* but I’m holding out hope for this one! The scenery is definitely gonna be amazing if nothing else.

I started listening to The One Piece Podcast which is really fun! They often have the official japanese –> english translator on, and he can shed a light on many puns and other things easily lost in translation. Makes me feel kind of bad about reading these fan translations, but not sure where I can read the official translations without waiting for the volumes to be released. The guys on the podcast also remember way more details and are way more observant than me, which is fun.

Happy Super Duper Monday, minna-san! I hope everyone had a good weekend. As for us, we are stoked for many fun events happening this summer. The weather is getting a bit warmer so be sure to keep yourselves hydrated and wear light clothing. Well, we done our obligation so we have loads of fun news to share with you. You know the drill. First off, last week’s chapter was EXTRAORDINARY! With the gang finally out of Totland, now they can rest easy now that Sanji is back with them. Meanwhile, all the representatives from the 20 kingdoms are sailing towards to Reviere. We see that Rebecca and Kyros joined with Violet with King Riku. Suddenly, a bunch pirates were plotting to kidnap Violet, but alas, the great marine hero Coby arrives and put a stop to them. He and Helmeppo are escorting the Riku family. Then, Coby reads the news about Luffy and Sanji. He couldn’t stop crying knowing that Luffy is making his name. The whole world reads the shocking news about the attempt assassination of Big Mom. Everyone was shocked to read the BIG BIG BIG NEWS about Luffy. So new bounties have increased, and a new Yonko has been announced. First, Sanji has a bounty of 330 million berries, but was really disappointed that his wanted poster added his family name with it. Once again, it depressed him. At the end, Luffy sees his bounty, but was sad cause it decreased to 150 berries, but Brook told him he misread it. It was announced that the new Yonko is none other… drum roll, please! Da da da da da da! LUFFY!! Yes, is now a Yonko with a bounty of 1 billion 500 million!!! YOWZA! That’s a big increase than 2 years ago when he fought against Doflamingo. The news shocked the gang?! Straw Hat Luffy is the 5th Yonko!!!! What will happen next time?! Guess we’ll see how things will unfold in this new adventure. There is no manga this week due to Golden Week so be patient and wait. Next, this past weekend’s episode was scary as we see Big Mom going nuts to see that Brook destroyed the picture of Mother Caramel. Meanwhile, as everyone tries to fulfill their mission, the Big Mom pirates surrounded the Vinsmokes ready to kill them as they planned. Judge was utterly in distraught finding out that he was played for a sucker for trusting Big Mom. At the end, Katakuri approaches quickly to stop Bege and Luffy from carrying on their plan to kill Big Mom as Brook urges Luffy to show the wrecked picture to Big Mom one more time so that she can screech her lungs out for the KX launcher to kill her. Next time, the fight goes on. Will they succeed with this plan? Don’t miss it! Now on with the news! Look who came to hang out with us for a bit. It’s Tongari-san! Take it away, my friend. For appetizers, they’ll have smoked duck, pastrami beef, smoked salmon, raw ham millefeu, and marinated shrimp and octopus with some delicacy sauce with hearts. For entre, you will have a choice to choose either the beef dish that has sirloin roast beef with layoinasse potatoes, and gratin soybeans. The fish dish has sautee sea beam with mash potatoes and eggplants. Both entres will include bread with butter. For kids menu, they’ll have Buggy’s Watch-Out-for-his-red nose dish. It will have Buggy’s chicken rice with a cherry tomato, fried shrimp with tartar sauce, omelet, chicken nugget, fresh steamed veggies, and macaroni gratin. For dessert, they’ll serve Tokimeki’s Strawberry Mousse. For drinks, you can order these colorful alcohol or non-alcohol drinks. For alcohol drinks, they’ll have Buggy’s “Who the hell you’re calling big nose” drink with an orange and cherry, and they’ll have for “You’re beautiful” strawberry sparkling wine. For non-alcohol, they’ll have “You’re cute” lemon soda cocktail, and Longing for the All-Blue drink with some colorful gelatin fish. If you order either of these drinks, you’ll be given a free random silver spoon of any Straw Hats. You will can also purchase a commemorative sweet dessert gift set of Sanji that will have a chocolate and fruit heart cakes with two tea bags, and a special message from Sanji. Let the cashier know before you leave. You’ll also have a chance to take a photo with the characters. No news yet who will be there this summer, but while you’re dining, waiters will escort you to the line so you can take your photo. Once you leave, you can head outside to purchase your photo frame. Also, they’ll have a Water Battle where you can watch a mini show of OP and get wet at the same time. Its oodles of fun, and a way to cool yourself off from the scorching heat. Mix your ingredients together until it is a frosting-like consistency. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays or fun silicone candy molds. Let the chalk dry for 24 hours before unmolding. That is it! The cool part about making homemade sidewalk chalk is that you can make whatever colors and shapes you like (it would make fun birthday party favors for a spring or summer birthday party too). Then let your kids’ imaginations soar when they cover the driveway in their chalk art. For the exact recipe, visit I Heart Naptime. Recycled Chalk Paint What do you do with all those little nubs of sidewalk chalk? They probably get left alongside the driveway or abandoned at the bottom of the bucket of chalk. Put them to use instead of letting them go to waste. Have your kids gather up as many of the little chalk ends as they can find and in six easy steps you can have homemade chalk paint! After collecting the chalk bits (you can also use larger pieces of chalk or new chalk if you do not have enough bits and end pieces), have your children sort them by color, placing each color in a different freezer bag. Crush up each color until all that’s left is a fine powder – the kids will really enjoy taking care of this task. Pour the powder into a muffin tin or use empty butter and sour cream containers. Mix up a batch of chalk with cornstarch, water, and either food coloring or washable paint. Pour into ice cube trays or molds and place them in the freezer until frozen. Creative Chalk Art Ideas

Chalk Art Town Have hours of fun by drawing a giant chalk art town and roadway all over your driveway. Draw a twisty, turvy roadway complete with a yellow dotted line in the middle to divide the lanes. Then have your kiddos draw buildings, houses, trees, and whatever else they would like in their town. Once you have it all drawn out, have your kids dig out their toy cars and drive all over their chalk art town. This is a fun playtime activity because it gets the kids’ creative juices flowing, and then they get to play on their chalk art. Fun Photo Op Scenes Drawing fun chalk art scenes for your kids to participate in as a character makes a fun afternoon activity – and makes for some fun photos! Draw butterfly or bird wings and have your kids lie down in the middle as if they are the body of the butterfly or the bird. Try your hand at an outer space scene and have your kids pose like they are bouncing on the moon. Next, draw an umbrella to keep out some chalk art raindrops and then have your little ones lie down and pose like they are holding the umbrella handle. You could even draw an underwater scene and have your kids lie down on the ground and pose like they are swimming through the ocean. Really commit to the scene and have them put on bathing suits. Chalk Art Sports Fill up your driveway and sidewalk with your own miniature golf course. Obstacle Course Get your kids moving with your very own chalk art “obstacle” course. Use chalk art to play an outside version of the floor is lava that will not cause all your couch cushions to end up on the floor as stepping stones. Draw a series of stepping stones along your driveway or sidewalk. Make sure they are spaced apart and are not too close to each other. Then draw flames or lava in between the “stepping stones” and challenge your kids to hop across the stones without touching the lava. Playful Learning Activities

Alphabet Games Have fun with sidewalk chalk and work on the alphabet and spelling with this easy and adaptable Alphabet Game. With a piece of chalk, start by drawing a 6 square by 6 square grid so that you end up with a total of 36 spaces. Now randomly write a letter of the alphabet in each square of the grid, but instead of keeping the letters in order, scatter them throughout the board. Since there are 26 letters in the alphabet, and the grid has 36 spaces, there will be extra squares left over. These will be used as free spaces, so scatter those out throughout the grid too. Now that your board is ready, there are a number of alphabet-related games you can play. With younger kids, have them start by standing on the letter ‘A’ and then jump to the letter ‘B’ and so on until they make it through the entire alphabet. If letters are too far apart, they can jump on a free space to get closer. Have older kids spell out words. Give them words to spell or play a game where each person takes turns spelling a word in a certain category like animals, food, toys, or whatever else you can come up with. Letter Sounds If you have budding readers at home, use chalk art to work on letter sounds. Write letters all over your sidewalk or driveway. Then, draw a carrot around each letter. Now arm your kiddo with a spray bottle of water and ask them to “water the carrot” that makes the “ahh” sound. Now water the carrot with a ‘W,’ You can even work on capital versus lower case letters with this type of game and have them water the carrot with a lowercase ‘a’ or an uppercase ‘T.’ If you have a little firefighter on your hands, you can change it up and draw flames around your letters instead of carrots and ask them to put out the fire that makes the “tuh” sound or that has a lowercase ‘f.’ Counting Grid Help your little ones learn numbers and basic math through chalk art with this counting game. Start by drawing a grid like you did for the Alphabet Game. Instead of letters, this time fill the grid with numbers (scatter them all out and once again leave some blank spaces). Start with the numbers 1-20. For younger kids who are still working on number recognition, have your little one start on the number 1 and then count moving to the next number and the next until they get to the number 20. If numbers are too far apart, they can jump on a free space to get closer. Once your kid has those mastered, erase your board and move up to some larger numbers or draw a bigger grid and add more numbers. You can also use this same style grid to do some basic math with slightly older kids. If you have a grid with the numbers 1-20, give your kid a basic math equation to solve like 5+4, 9-3, etc. Then have them stand on the square that has the correct answer (just be sure the answer is less than 20!). For more advanced mathematicians, just include larger numbers in your grid. Outdoor Math “Board Game” Another way to take math outdoors is with this outdoor math “board game.” Start by drawing a path on the ground by making two squiggly lines parallel to each other and then divide your path into spaces by drawing horizontal lines every foot and a half or so (think something like the path from Candyland). Write “start” at one end and “finish” at the other. Now fill each space with a simple math equation. Depending on your children’s math level, consider alternating addition and subtraction. If they are more advanced, add in some multiplication and division spaces. Once your board is ready, it is time to play! Using a single die from an inside game you have (if you have a fun set of big foam dice, one of those would be perfect and easier to see from afar), have your kids take turns rolling the die and moving the correct number of places just like on a regular board game, except this time they are the game pieces. Once they get to the correct space, they have to answer the math equation. If they get it right, they get to take another turn. If they get it wrong, it’s the next person’s turn. Keep rolling and solving problems until everyone gets to the finish. Shape Maze Help your preschooler learn shapes and even colors with this simple shape maze. Draw a variety of shapes in rows all over your driveway or sidewalk, making sure to alternate the shapes throughout so that you have some of each shape in each row. Start by choosing a shape, a square for example. Have your kids stand in the first row on that shape (a square). Now they must get through the “maze” by only stepping on squares until they get to the other side. Next have them come back by only stepping on another shape, maybe triangles this time. You can play a few variations of this game too. Have your kids step on every one of a certain shape in the maze. This is also a fun way to work on colors. Try to make it across by only stepping on the red squares or the yellow triangles. Sidewalk chalk is a great way to take advantage of the beautiful weather and spend some time outdoors. Chalk art makes for a fun family activity that lets you enjoy the outdoors and spend some family time together. E3 2019 in photos: Gooigi, crazy arcade machines, and a DOOM museum

"Great work!" — Plus, the National Videogame Museum returns with some of its craziest rarities yet. Sam Machkovech and Kyle Orland - Jun 16, 2019 1:00 pm UTC LOS ANGELES—If you couldn't or didn't make it to E3 2019, you're not the only one. Anecdotal evidence suggests this was the most poorly attended E3 in some time (though its organizers at the ESA insist that this E3 had only 3,000 fewer attendees than 2018's jam-packed affair), owing perhaps to Sony's no-show or the abundance of live-streamed options for enjoying the event at your own home. Luigi and Gooigi attracted hordes of attendees excited to pose for photos. Sam Machkovech Inside the Luigi's Mansion 3 booth, fans could pose with a guy in a Luigi costume. Nintendo went all-out building a haunted house for these kiosks, but my photos of it turned out terribly. It was easier to get photos of the toy dioramas built around the Link's Awakening gameplay kiosks. Nintendo built four of them in all. A closer zoom on the plastic minis Nintendo built just for this occasion. Link delves into a dungeon. "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" "Wrong series, dude." I'll admit, I kinda lost my mind seeing this adorable Link and Marin meet-cute diorama. Marin in Smash Bros. Ultimate? A guy can dream, right? The EA Play event at the Hollywood Palladium included this impressive cast of paid Apex Legends cosplayers. Yes, the person cosplaying as Octane is a bilateral amputee. You couldn't buy these impressive 10" Apex Legends statues at EA Play. But you could buy a ton of shirts and hoodies. As an Apex Legends fan, Ars's Sam Machkovech nearly bought the "bamboozled" one. For some reason, EA Play hosted an Anthem gameplay session... and for some reason, attendees actually waited for it. FIFA '20 hosted an arena-soccer match. The McLaren Senna features in the new LEGO Speed expansion pack for Forza Horizon 4, so naturally, Microsoft had someone make a life-sized McLaren Serra model out of LEGO bricks. They went to pretty insane trouble to include significant elements from the real deal. Real wheels, real LEGO blocks. This refreshed version of the Xbox Elite Controller (dubbed "version 2") will launch in November for $180 and features such perks as a rechargeable battery, a controller-charging case, increased hair-trigger responsiveness, and more. We couldn't test the new XEC with any games, but its newly texturized grip and significant heft felt good to hold on its own. C'mon, Xbox, you think we're gonna steal this thing? How dare you. Say hello to one of Gears 5's newest, most disgusting monsters. It's not a Gears of War character if it doesn't have chest-high cover nearby. The best thing about Gears 5's new "Escape" mode is that it supports three-player split-screen co-op. More of this kinda thing, please, Xbox Game Studios. The newest LEGO Star Wars release this coming holiday season revolves around the "Skywalker Saga," so naturally, it's time to trot out the old LEGO Han in LEGO carbonite statue again. Coach's Pac-Man line of bags and accessories. For the discerning, fancypants gamer. More Pac-Man and classic-Namco swag. Pretty solid 10" Tekken statues. The entire Bandai Namco fancy-collectible wall was pretty great, honestly. I couldn't take photos of the Final Fantasy VII Remake gameplay kiosks, but I could take photos of the series' Shinra Corporation stuff all around it. For example, this recreation of an iconic FFVII backdrop. Square Enix put up a few Shinra advertisements around the kiosks. See? They have Midgar's best interests at heart! I really hope there's a full cartoon series hidden inside of FFVII Remake starring this cartoon dog. Someone please translate this for us. A small detail of the amazing theater room for Psychonauts 2. TEETH! Arcade1UP had a significant E3 presence with its home-friendly versions of classic arcade machines. The manufacturer used E3 to reveal its newest product: a Star Wars Atari arcade trilogy collection, coming "late 2019." Another look at its handsome side cabinet art. I had to stand on a stool to get a better look at the screen and controller. Because this cabinet was set up on a precarious platform, it was not playable at E3. An Arcade1UP representative said it collaborated with Disney and Lucasfilm in the making of this cabinet, then studied original classic arcade hardware to recreate the controller. Rather than answer my technical questions about how the controller was constructed in this modern version, the Arcade1UP rep insisted that it sought input from arcade cabinet collectors to confirm that its version nailed the original cabinets' feel and mechanical action. Another new Arcade1UP cabinet: the TMNT collection, which includes both of Konami's four-player brawlers in one cabinet. (Most of their cabs include at least two games, if not a few more.) It seems to comfortably support four players, but I liked this group's tweak: letting the middle player simultaneously control two turtles. Then there was this absolutely ridiculous thing that Arcade1UP built for the heckuvit. That's intrepid Ars Technica editor Sam Machkovech up there pretending to play the game. I hope the hand on the joystick makes clear how stupidly massive this whole rig was. But it worked... and Sam won his match. Really, Sam? Be professional. Sega's booth had its own oversized-controller gimmick to celebrate the impending launch of the Sega Genesis Mini this September. It's not really E3 until Ubisoft has a stage full of professional dancers and average fans getting down to Just Dance as one awkward collective. A peek at the poster-covered walls inside of Cyberpunk 2077's behind-closed-doors booth. Capcom had a relatively meager showing at E3, with this new Monster Hunter World expansion taking up most of the company's booth. But, hey, at least they had some nice 10" dragons under glass. Hold me closer, tiny draaaagonnnnns. Sorry, Street Fighter fans. Capcom didn't come to E3 2019 with any news about either SFV or any new fighting games. Just 10" figurines. Chun-Li and Cammy, kicking ass beneath glass. Larger than life. Just like Borderlands should be. Kyle Orland This was by far the best part of the Destroy All Humans revival attempt. Kyle Orland Pixl Cube was one of the more inventive games at the Indiecade booth, a tilt-sensitive box with LED dots that moved through a maze as if pulled by gravity. Kyle Orland In the entryway for Youtube Gaming's creator space, blocks from the show floor, a Google Stadia controller sits behind glass with a mock-up of a retro game store. Kyle Orland The YouTube Gaming space also featured some streamers on old-school CRT TVs, which was a weird look. Kyle Orland Cute. Kyle Orland The YouTube Gaming logo sits on a fake cartridge alongside... Hyper Chroma Ultra? Kyle Orland Nothing says "E3" like a guy in a Yoshi/Mario costume livestreaming himself as he balks loudly at the show floor's $6 pretzels. Kyle Orland New Wave Toys is expanding its Replicade line of authentic miniature cabinets with the likes of these two Capcom classics. Kyle Orland MyArcade is expanding from miniature cabinets to massive portable systems capable of playing actual NES and SNES cartridges. Kyle Orland MyArcade's upcoming Contra cabinet even includes link cable support for two player action. Don't you DARE touch this actual Contra cabinet in the MyArcade booth, though. Kyle Orland That being said, we attended, and Ars Technica came back from Los Angeles with plenty to show for it. In addition to a few more hands-on previews coming (which will build upon the best-of E3 2019 list we already filed), we took our cameras out at both the official E3 halls and nearby events (Xbox Fan Fest, EA Play). I gotta say, in this modern political climate, I have been calling every year "the year of doom." A very nice pencil sketch taken from the original PC game's box art. I'd never seen these minis before, but now I want to play DOOM-opoly. A better zoom on these metal beasts. Collect me plenty. Now for some impressive 3D molds of famed DOOM demons. See? It's like a museum. Funnily enough, this is my "I don't know what to do with my hands" pose when I stand for photos. The secret for awkward photo poses: turn your arms into massive rocket launchers. Way less awkward! As one of DOOM 64's longtime fans, I stood at this specific panel for a while. This might be the least-blurry these N64 sprites have ever looked. (The N64 famously smothered its sprites in a disgusting, smeary blur.) More figurines on display. More figurines on display. More swag on display. More swag on display. The result is a whopping three image galleries here. The first is a catch-all for most of the basic, expected fare, while the second and third focus on retro elements: a DOOM-specific mini-museum, and a curated collection of very rare gaming hardware and collectibles courtesy of the National Videogame Museum in Frisco, Tex. (If you've never been to that physical location before, we strongly encourage you to book a trip.) You know the retro portion of E3 is serious when they put this thing behind a rope. Truly one of a kind. Click the image to get a better look at the information placard. Yep, those are traditional Saturn controller ports. We'd never seen these Vectrex prototypes and variants before. The innards of a prototype color Vectrex system that never saw production. Kyle Orland Anybody think they can repair this thing? Yes, the only scoring cart that remains from this Super Nintendo championship event. Also, a killer Vectrex jacket. How the heck does the NVM keep finding and showing off such incredible game-history rarities? Some cool mementos from the original Mortal Kombat. The placard explains how rare this system is... ... based on this specific message signed by none other than Bill Gates. I don't care how puffy this jacket is. I'd wear it. Every year, the National Video Game Museum trots out at least one previously confidential binder taken from a major gaming company. This year's was Nintendo. I'm always fascinated by internal '80s and '90s documentation about piracy and cartridge backup systems. This section went on for a few more pages and even included grainy photos of various cartridge-copying devices. Video games: the board game! Video games: the, uh, VHS game! Well before the Game Boy revolutionized portable gaming, kids of the '70s and '80s were stuck with these clunkers. One wall was dedicated to particularly rare game consoles that launched solely in Japan. Eat your heart out, Donkey Konga. This is one of Gunpei Yokoi's classic electronic games that he designed for Nintendo in the '70s. This makes me wish Ulala was in an actual '80s cartoon. Kyle Orland In addition to popular and common fare in the coin-op section, the NVM trotted out a few machines we rarely see at classic gaming expos, like this fetching Jungle King cab. True story: we asked Double Fine studio founder and creative director Tim Schafer if he could step back for a second so we could take a photo of this handsome Omega Race cabinet. "I used to play this game all the time as a kid," he remarked before stepping away slowly. (If you're wondering, he signs his name "TIM" in high-score tables.) And we couldn't leave E3 without a walk through the almost carnival-like selection of vendors and inventions in the expo's very back hall. Look below at the show's weird "et cetera" section. Here's a gallery of E3 2019's oddest booths and products. "Wow, how nice and COOL!" we're sure you are saying to yourself. Kyle Orland Thermoreal uses superconductors (?!) to simulate a cold or hot feeling in metal. The company integrated this tech into VR-compatible gloves and a VR headset. As the VR environment changes, so does the sensation of real-life temperature. Trippy! Kyle Orland This 1,000 MaH battery pack for the Switch was heavy, but the harness made it pretty easy to slide on and off to use only when it's needed. Kyle Orland Some extremely generic-looking custom chip boards for use in mini-arcade devices and portable emulation devices. If anybody reading this has the rights to the Atari Jaguar Mini, look them up. Kyle Orland Why stream games to a smartphone with Google Stadia when the Smach Z packs an entire 1080p gaming PC with a 6" screen into a rather bulky portable package? Doom (2016) ran with noticeable judders, and the unit got noticeably hot in our test. But the fact that it works at all was impressive. Kyle Orland The Tactsuit haptic system jolts your body when playing compatible VR games and software. Kyle Orland The Vuvana system has something to do with using a new blockchain cryptocurrency to buy and "own" items in virtual reality, which you can view on a cell phone with this included viewer, apparently. APRIL’S UNITY DAYS WRITE UP

Day 2 (January 14th) Part 2:

After lunch with #Bactus:

it was time to go handle other business. We split up here, with some of going to the Costume Panel and others going for autographs, unfortunately the costume panel with Wendy Biscuit was cancelled with no notice and the autograph lines were horrendous so we wound up just charging our phones and chatting for a bit until the Delinquent Panel, which featured Eliza, Bob, Chris, Richard, Jarod, Chelsey and Katie (Lindsey was supposed to be on the panel, but she was still not at the even yet).

I was actually a bit late to the Delinquent Panel because I had my Bob photo op pictured here:

He’s a genuine sweetheart guys. Like, he remembered my name from the quick meeting we had at the panel in the morning, said he liked my hair, and asked if I’d eaten (he smells like mint-he was eating one-and super clean laundry, btw), before saying he had. When he asked how I wanted us to pose, I just asked for a hug and he said “Of course!!” He gave me a real hug first and then we did the side hug for the photo.

Then I joined the other gals in waiting for another Bob photo op, because Jen had two. After Gina, Sam and Jen took their individual ops, we all ran back for a group, which made Bob really smile, he was super surprised:

We finally made it to the Delinquent Panel and here’s the relevant info I gathered from there:

Everyone got their Custom Funko Pops, they were all super pleased (Sachin cat called from the audience because he didn’t get one).

They talked about their character’s ages, with Bob pointing out Bellamy isn’t really a Delinquent, Bob said Bellamy is about 24) so he must have had a birthday on the ground, same as Clarke.

This is Harper’s biggest Season thus far (which makes sense because she’s finally a series regular).

Clark says that the Jonty high five in the trailer is a good indicator of the promise for Jonty this Season.

Bob said Bellamy thinks Octavia is responsible for Monroe’s death (which I agree with.)

When asked why they sided with Pike, Monty said it was for his mother (which I’ve always thought, so good to have that confirmed!). Jarod (who was anti-Pike) said it was because Pike was a Brother (another black man) and that the others wouldn’t understand.) Someone reminded him he was anti-Pike, it was funny.

Jarod said he gets nervous working with Bob because he respects his ability as an actor so much.

Murphy had a lot of respect for Pike by the end of the Season, Richard loves Murphy’s relentlessness.

Clarke’s emotional side comes from Jake, while Abby is where she gets her diplomatic/political stuff from.

They all joked about being chipped or “chip-faced”.

Eliza said Monty is her all time favorite character on the show.

When asked which other show they’d like to be on: Eliza said Broad City, Bob said Black Mirror (everyone cheered), Chelsey said Homeland.

Richard said he thinks Murphy and Bellamy are back to some semblance of mistake and Bob made like...a “sure, Jan” noise.

Season 4 has a huge power imbalance, with no real Chancellor or Commander and so the power shift is tumultuous.

There will be a mutual respect between the Delinquents and the adults because they all have to collectively come together.

END DELINQUENT PANEL HIGHLIGHTS:

After the Panel was over, I had a few more photo ops scheduled, so I took care of those:

The Bad Boys op with Jarod, Bob and Richard. Sachin snorted when he heard their op was called “The Bad Boys”, lol:

I asked them to do a Charlie’s Angel pose, with me as Charlie, presenting my angels. Bob still looks too innocent (He can’t help it), but Richard’s face is perf!

I also squeezed in my Jarod Joseph photo op, I wanted to do the “Unfriendly Black Hotties” thing-Jarod, nailed it, me-unsure:

I missed the Camp Jaha Panel, because I was given a random free Meet and Greet with Luisa d’Oliveira.

Luisa is the sweetest, she started off by asking everyone where we were from (and remembered every place). She was so genuine guys. She doesn’t seem to realize that people actual like her outside of the Memori relationship.

END OF LUISA MEET AND GREET SUMMARY

Then I shot over to get my Photo Op with Lindsey “Actual Angel” Morgan done:

After that was done it was time for the Grounder/Mt. Weather Panel which featured Chris, Jarod, Chelsey, Tasya, Luisa and Jessica.

Chris was late and walked on to the stage looking like a hipster college student. (He wears a backpack everywhere guys and he always has his hood up, it’s adorbs).

Tasya confirmed that Echo is a royal guard for the Ice Nation and said there will be more Becho interaction this Season. Bellamy is the only Arkadian that Echo trusts (although we don’t know if that sentiment is returned-I expect to see some tension here!)

Jessica said it’s pretty obvious when you start watching Season 4 where Niylah’s allegiance lies. She’s super funny, btw.

Chris is so deadpan guys. Like, his humor is out of this world. I love it.

My favorite Chris quote was: “When Jarod's hand was on my knee in episode 210, I've never felt warmer.”

He asked how many people shipped Minty by show of hands (and then Marper). It was about even and Chelsey raised her hand for both options.

Chris wanted a photo of the audience but he doesn’t have a smart phone (according to Jessica it’s a flip phone) and so he took out an Old School disposable camera that he’d just bought from London Drugs and took a picture of one side of the crowd, forgot to roll the film forward, so had to pause and do it, and then the other side. Jarod shook his head and laughed.

When asked which character they’d like to play other than their own everyone but Jarod said Bellamy. Jarod said Monty, because he’s like a cat-to which Chris replied “What?”

Marper was organic and not planned at all. They often didn’t have lines in Season 2, but were told to do things in the background, so Chris and Chelsey discussed what they would do in the situation if this was real (after Harper has her butt drilled) and Chris said “Well, we’re friends, so I’d try to make you feel better” and this is where the cup scene originates.

Chelsey said they kept improvising those little scenes in the background and eventually the writer’s must have picked up on it and actually made Marper canon.

Chris closed the panel with the following: He asked how many people had ever been in a breakup that was so bad that you thought you’d never love again, lots of people raised their hands, including all of the cast and then he said:

“Monty and Harper are at a position where they are super excited and super terrified because they are starting something new and they're sharing so much with each other so when that person leaves you it can be soul destroying. Welcome to Unity Days.”

Everyone cracked up and that was the end of that panel.

END OF GROUNDER/MT. WEATHER PANEL SUMMARY

Then I ran up to get my final two autographs of the day, both from Bob. I gave him #Bactus and a handwritten card first, he smiled super big when I gave him Bactus and he and his manager both laughed when I explained it’s name, he said that was clever.

I asked him to sign my “Bellamy Blake Protection Squad Shirt” with @indygoh‘s art on it:

and the postcard I won in the Cancer Gets LOST silent auction. He loved the BBPS shirt and said, sometimes Bellamy needs some backup and he and his manager said that the postcard’s artwork was cute. While I was leaving, he said “Thanks for Bactus, April.”

And I died on the inside because he remembered my name from hours before.

After the Convention closed for the evening, everyone gathered in my room and we had an impromptu pizza party where we just in person meta’d (and I got teary about Lincoln-which was super embarrassing) and it was such a great night, because talking in person is always so much easier than online.

We hung out pretty late, until most of us were sleepy and then parted ways to get ready for Unity Days Part 3.
