Dorian Storm and His Fear of Corruption

Corruption has been a theme of Dorian's character from the beginning, all the way back to ExU. Dorian's biggest fear is that of corruption, but what is corruption? And what does that look like for Dorian?

Corruption, by its nature, is a good moral character being lored (often by an external higher power) down a dark path, which leads to the characters' eventual moral downfall. The abandoment of one's true self and the embracing of one's darker (perhaps truer) self.

Dorian knows what corruption looks like. Knows what it's like to buckle under the temptions offered by a higher power and lose yourself in the darkness. Opal's corruption showcased how it's not as simple as losing your way but rather a slow decay of your former, kinder, truer self. That gives birth to a lesser self from its carcass. No matter how hard those around you struggle to keep you grounded, they ultimately lose to the corrupting force, too, and have to grapple with the reality of their failure to save you.

But I think Dorian's fear corruption doesn't manifest in a traditional way. And while Dorian's experience with corruption (Opal & The Spider Queen and Mirror Fearne) do follow typical tropes of corruption, I feel his own personal ideas of corruption change when looking at Dorian's past as Brontë.

Dorian is a character that has been defined by his desire to break away from his responsibilities and the pressure of Brontë. To step out of the shadow of his brother and carve a path for himself. This desire and need manifested into the creation of Dorian Storm and humble bards, who only worries were the open road and the unknown adventures that lay ahead. Dorian was finally able to find himself, his true self, until the fate of the world fell into his lap.

He was once again thrust bad into the shoes of Brontë, not only having to deal with being the only surviving heir but also having the fate of all Exandria in his hands. The pressure is both uncomfortable but not unfamiliar.

Dorian, at his core, is a character about finding yourself, and his fear of corruption is mainly based on the fear of losing yourself. Dorian has only been Dorian for a year and a couple of months, and he is faced with the inevitability of losing himself, if not to the end of the world then certainly to the demands of Brontë back on the Squall.

Becoming Brontë again, taking on the responsibilities of the squall would be a corruption of Dorian Storm or perhaps Dorian shirking the responsibilities of the squall would be a corruption of Brontë?

Sorry I haven't posted anything besides this all month. I drew some stuff but I don't think they were worth posting so I might post them anyways but only a few of them, the ones I wanted to post anyways but didn't for some reason.

I might post things next month tho. Most likely.

Anyways here are some recent art for Halloween.

Bluey and Claire with a big jack o lantern. Also happy birthday to Jack Stauber's Opal. I didn't know which drawing I liked more so here's both.

Bingo as a ghost. Based on a book I saw but never bought to read. Bluey was a vampire. I wasn't feeling like drawing her as that tho idk.

This was drawn sometime after midnight. So right on time basically. Clay got a pumpkin stuck on his head and the kiddos were laughing at him. Lol.

This was on my head. Them singing this lullaby got stuck in my head when I told myself to go to sleep. I was gonna post this sometime later after I sleep but then I decided to doodle this and it wouldn't feel right to post it on the daytime where I don't sleep until I come home from wherever.

^ these are the pokémon oshawott and umbreon- mine specifically are named opal and evelyn! beloveds. they would make an entertaining duo i think

here we have the pokémon quaxly (in the game mine was named ralis but idk if i consider this plushy *him* like i do with opal and evelyn), marina from splatoon (i wanted a gift for riya but couldn’t bear to buy one and not the other so she got pearl and i got marina. hearts connected across a distance) (also she cameos in my first joshua plushy abuse video i threw her at him. these two are sitting by each other but they would not like each other), and lastly joshua from twewy (i have filmed multiple shots of me abusing him in effigy)

Introducing a fresh new Inkadian band: Sealestial!!

Consisting of Dory, an Inkling, and Nelly, an Octoling! They make electro swing music!! Nelly makes the music and Dory provides most of the vocals, though Nelly might sing a little bit too. They don’t host news or anything, they just provide music for battles!

Dory’s full name is Dorian and he’s my Splatoon self insert!! Nelly is my version of Agent 8!! Dorian meets her some time after she escapes the Deepsea Metro and forms a band with her.

Nelly is a Graneledone boreopacifica, also known as the deep-sea octopus:

Notice that they have very big round eyes, which I tried to emulate in Nelly’s eyes (as opposed to Dorian’s which are more angled). They’ve been described as “googly eyed”. Also, the deeper they live, the more wart-like thingies they have on their bodies, which I showed in Nelly’s tentacles!! I chose this octopus since it’s from the deep sea (I know 8 isn’t actually from the Deepsea Metro, but it’s how I associate them).

Dory is a Doryteuthis opalescens, also known as the opalescent squid:
