What kind of bubble is AI?

My latest column for Locus Magazine is "What Kind of Bubble is AI?" All economic bubbles are hugely destructive, but some of them leave behind wreckage that can be salvaged for useful purposes, while others leave nothing behind but ashes:

Think about some 21st century bubbles. The dotcom bubble was a terrible tragedy, one that drained the coffers of pension funds and other institutional investors and wiped out retail investors who were gulled by Superbowl Ads. But there was a lot left behind after the dotcoms were wiped out: cheap servers, office furniture and space, but far more importantly, a generation of young people who'd been trained as web makers, leaving nontechnical degree programs to learn HTML, perl and python. This created a whole cohort of technologists from non-technical backgrounds, a first in technological history. Many of these people became the vanguard of a more inclusive and humane tech development movement, and they were able to make interesting and useful services and products in an environment where raw materials – compute, bandwidth, space and talent – were available at firesale prices.
Contrast this with the crypto bubble. It, too, destroyed the fortunes of institutional and individual investors through fraud and Superbowl Ads. It, too, lured in nontechnical people to learn esoteric disciplines at investor expense. But apart from a smattering of Rust programmers, the main residue of crypto is bad digital art and worse Austrian economics.
Or think of Worldcom vs Enron. Both bubbles were built on pure fraud, but Enron's fraud left nothing behind but a string of suspicious deaths. By contrast, Worldcom's fraud was a Big Store con that required laying a ton of fiber that is still in the ground to this day, and is being bought and used at pennies on the dollar.
AI is definitely a bubble. As I write in the column, if you fly into SFO and rent a car and drive north to San Francisco or south to Silicon Valley, every single billboard is advertising an "AI" startup, many of which are not even using anything that can be remotely characterized as AI. That's amazing, considering what a meaningless buzzword AI already is.
So which kind of bubble is AI? When it pops, will something useful be left behind, or will it go away altogether? To be sure, there's a legion of technologists who are learning Tensorflow and Pytorch. These nominally open source tools are bound, respectively, to Google and Facebook's AI environments:

But if those environments go away, those programming skills become a lot less useful. Live, large-scale Big Tech AI projects are shockingly expensive to run. Some of their costs are fixed – collecting, labeling and processing training data – but the running costs for each query are prodigious. There's a massive primary energy bill for the servers, a nearly as large energy bill for the chillers, and a titanic wage bill for the specialized technical staff involved.
Once investor subsidies dry up, will the real-world, non-hyperbolic applications for AI be enough to cover these running costs? AI applications can be plotted on a 2X2 grid whose axes are "value" (how much customers will pay for them) and "risk tolerance" (how perfect the product needs to be).
Charging teenaged D&D players $10 month for an image generator that creates epic illustrations of their characters fighting monsters is low value and very risk tolerant (teenagers aren't overly worried about six-fingered swordspeople with three pupils in each eye). Charging scammy spamfarms $500/month for a text generator that spits out dull, search-algorithm-pleasing narratives to appear over recipes is likewise low-value and highly risk tolerant (your customer doesn't care if the text is nonsense). Charging visually impaired people $100 month for an app that plays a text-to-speech description of anything they point their cameras at is low-value and moderately risk tolerant ("that's your blue shirt" when it's green is not a big deal, while "the street is safe to cross" when it's not is a much bigger one).
Morganstanley doesn't talk about the trillions the AI industry will be worth some day because of these applications. These are just spinoffs from the main event, a collection of extremely high-value applications. Think of self-driving cars or radiology bots that analyze chest x-rays and characterize masses as cancerous or noncancerous.
These are high value – but only if they are also risk-tolerant. The pitch for self-driving cars is "fire most drivers and replace them with 'humans in the loop' who intervene at critical junctures." That's the risk-tolerant version of self-driving cars, and it's a failure. More than $100b has been incinerated chasing self-driving cars, and cars are nowhere near driving themselves:

Quite the reverse, in fact. Cruise was just forced to quit the field after one of their cars maimed a woman – a pedestrian who had not opted into being part of a high-risk AI experiment – and dragged her body 20 feet through the streets of San Francisco. Afterwards, it emerged that Cruise had replaced the single low-waged driver who would normally be paid to operate a taxi with 1.5 high-waged skilled technicians who remotely oversaw each of its vehicles:

The self-driving pitch isn't that your car will correct your own human errors (like an alarm that sounds when you activate your turn signal while someone is in your blind-spot). Self-driving isn't about using automation to augment human skill – it's about replacing humans. There's no business case for spending hundreds of billions on better safety systems for cars (there's a human case for it, though!). The only way the price-tag justifies itself is if paid drivers can be fired and replaced with software that costs less than their wages.
What about radiologists? Radiologists certainly make mistakes from time to time, and if there's a computer vision system that makes different mistakes than the sort that humans make, they could be a cheap way of generating second opinions that trigger re-examination by a human radiologist. But no AI investor thinks their return will come from selling hospitals that reduce the number of X-rays each radiologist processes every day, as a second-opinion-generating system would. Rather, the value of AI radiologists comes from firing most of your human radiologists and replacing them with software whose judgments are cursorily double-checked by a human whose "automation blindness" will turn them into an OK-button-mashing automaton:

The profit-generating pitch for high-value AI applications lies in creating "reverse centaurs": humans who serve as appendages for automation that operates at a speed and scale that is unrelated to the capacity or needs of the worker:

But unless these high-value applications are intrinsically risk-tolerant, they are poor candidates for automation. Cruise was able to nonconsensually enlist the population of San Francisco in an experimental murderbot development program thanks to the vast sums of money sloshing around the industry. Some of this money funds the inevitabilist narrative that self-driving cars are coming, it's only a matter of when, not if, and so SF had better get in the autonomous vehicle or get run over by the forces of history.
Once the bubble pops (all bubbles pop), AI applications will have to rise or fall on their actual merits, not their promise. The odds are stacked against the long-term survival of high-value, risk-intolerant AI applications.
The problem for AI is that while there are a lot of risk-tolerant applications, they're almost all low-value; while nearly all the high-value applications are risk-intolerant. Once AI has to be profitable – once investors withdraw their subsidies from money-losing ventures – the risk-tolerant applications need to be sufficient to run those tremendously expensive servers in those brutally expensive data-centers tended by exceptionally expensive technical workers.
If they aren't, then the business case for running those servers goes away, and so do the servers – and so do all those risk-tolerant, low-value applications. It doesn't matter if helping blind people make sense of their surroundings is socially beneficial. It doesn't matter if teenaged gamers love their epic character art. It doesn't even matter how horny scammers are for generating AI nonsense SEO websites:

These applications are all riding on the coattails of the big AI models that are being built and operated at a loss in order to be profitable. If they remain unprofitable long enough, the private sector will no longer pay to operate them.
Now, there are smaller models, models that stand alone and run on commodity hardware. These would persist even after the AI bubble bursts, because most of their costs are setup costs that have already been borne by the well-funded companies who created them. These models are limited, of course, though the communities that have formed around them have pushed those limits in surprising ways, far beyond their original manufacturers' beliefs about their capacity. These communities will continue to push those limits for as long as they find the models useful.
These standalone, "toy" models are derived from the big models, though. When the AI bubble bursts and the private sector no longer subsidizes mass-scale model creation, it will cease to spin out more sophisticated models that run on commodity hardware (it's possible that Federated learning and other techniques for spreading out the work of making large-scale models will fill the gap).
So what kind of bubble is the AI bubble? What will we salvage from its wreckage? Perhaps the communities who've invested in becoming experts in Pytorch and Tensorflow will wrestle them away from their corporate masters and make them generally useful. Certainly, a lot of people will have gained skills in applying statistical techniques.
But there will also be a lot of unsalvageable wreckage. As big AI models get integrated into the processes of the productive economy, AI becomes a source of systemic risk. The only thing worse than having an automated process that is rendered dangerous or erratic based on AI integration is to have that process fail entirely because the AI suddenly disappeared, a collapse that is too precipitous for former AI customers to engineer a soft landing for their systems.
This is a blind spot in our policymakers debates about AI. The smart policymakers are asking questions about fairness, algorithmic bias, and fraud. The foolish policymakers are ensnared in fantasies about "AI safety," AKA "Will the chatbot become a superintelligence that turns the whole human race into paperclips?"

In the midst of debating the semantics of genocide, you can tell where a news outlet’s underlying bias lies by checking the headline to see whether ‘genocide’ is in quotes.
This also frequently applies to individuals.
Rule Three of Spotting Genocide
Use your fucking eyes. When shit like this goes down, it will be heard on the internet. Even a competent military will struggle to hide the evidence of an ethnic cleansing.
To uphold the integrity of Rule Three, ensure you strike down any and all internet censorship laws with extreme prejudice.
Rule Four of Spotting Genocide
Word of mouth and community service are your friends. During a genocide, protests will break out in public spaces, and political discussions may seem divided to an abnormal degree. Keep an ear to the ground, and both eyes on the streets.
Rule Five of Spotting Genocide
Check news sources from more than one country. In fact, check from as many different countries as possible. Even the ‘developing’ ones. Especially the developing ones.

Fuck Chromium (and that includes Brave and Vivialdi)
I have made multiple posts about why you should use Firefox, and of course I get the reply "not all chromium browsers are bad, they are not all as evil as Chrome." And sure, browsers who use the chromium code are not required to do all the shady things that Google does with it.
Still, I think it's bad that chromium-based browsers are getting close to total market dominance. By this point it has made Google's competitors like Microsoft and Opera drop their own unique proprietary browser engines for chromium. Browsers are becoming a fucking monoculture at this point. And Chromium becoming the browser code base of choice empowers Google, since they are the ones who mainly develop, maintain and fund its code. It means supporting them in their quest to become an internet monopoly that can do things like drm the web itself.
So let me be clear: you are still supporting google by using chromium-based browsers. By helping out in making chromium the de facto standard for browsers, you are giving google power. They are the ones driving chromium development, they will set the standards. And those standards will be in Google's favor. They are an ad company, their goal is to kill off adblockers by making them impossible to use, first with manifest v3 for extensions and now WEI, their web drm.
Brave is a joke.
The supposed "good guy" chromium browsers people recommend are actually shady as shit.
The one i see recommended the most is Brave, and it's fucking terrible. For one thing, it is funded by right-wing techbro Brendan Eich. He was Mozilla CEO for some time, but then people found he was a massive homophobe who funded campaigns against marriage equality, and Mozilla forced him to resign. And that's why he created Brave. That's who you are supporting by using Brave.
It runs off chromium because that's the easy and lazy choice for a browser. And it's literally funded through cryptocurrency, probably the negative environmental impact is a plus in Eich's book. And its adblocker runs off the same dishonest business model as adblock plus does, it will not block ads if advertisers pay them for the privilege. This betrayal of the users is opt-in at least, and you get paid for watching ads, but it's in the aforementioned worthless crypto beans. Brave is a joke.
Vivaldi and the importance of open-source
And then there's Vivaldi, it's a freeware proprietary browser run by a for-profit company, which alone should scare you off it.
"If you aren't paying for it, you are not the customer, you are the product" is a phrase that sometimes unfairly gets applied to open source projects to dismiss them. If it's open source and either community-run or run by a non-profit foundation like the Open document foundation for Libreoffice and or the Mozilla foundation for Firefox/Thunderbird, you are safe even if it's free.
But that phrase 100% applies to free products from for-profit corporations. These companies need to make profits at some point for for their shareholders, and if it is not from selling goods or services, it comes from things like selling your user's data or "attention".
That applies to Vivaldi, who makes big promises about how they will respect their users privacy and never sell their data. But promises mean nothing, Google also says they respect your privacy. And the thing is, Vivaldi is closed source. Not entirely, ironically the bits they got from Google's chromium are open source, but other parts of their code is closed-source. And what that means is, they can make any and all promises about what their browser's code does and there is nobody except Vivaldi that can check if their code actually fulfils those promises. Only Vivaldi has access to that code.
I'm no open-source fanatic, like I don't care if some random game i install and play is closed-source, as long as it is from a credible developer. But open-source is important for security and privacy, because that means someone else other than the company who develops the program can vet it's code for vulnerabilities and privacy violations. Your browser and e-mail client (vivaldi has an e-mail client too) should be open-source for your own safety, because those programs handle sensitive data like your passwords or your e-mails. Closed-source is not more secure, since Kerckhoff's principle applies to digital security and privacy.
And Vivaldi by being proprietary software fails that test. Their own justification is that being closed-source is "their first line of defense, to prevent other parties from taking the code and building an equivalent browser (essentially a fork) too easily." It's the same hypocritical argument that Red Hat used to justify making their Enterprise Linux distro closed-source. "It's fine if we use chromium's code to build our own browser, and expressly for making an Opera clone (that's the literal point of Vivaldi, that's why the name is a music reference), but if someone does the same with our product, they're evil." It's nauseating and alone justification to distrust Vivaldi as it is crying out to be trusted.
Listen to some Antonio Vivaldi instead, his music slaps. And install Firefox and Thunderbird instead.

WordPress Shifts in industry news I am not a part of but enjoy gossiping about
I used to do a a lot of work using WordPress as a system. It's easy, cheap to build and maintain with, etc.
I do not anymore. This has nothing to do with WordPress. It was exclusively a "a few years ago I received the opportunity to bow out of the industry as a graphic designer in order to pursue a cocktail of art, fantasy, economy, and business"
I used to be a customer of Advanced Custom Fields. I am no longer, for the same reason as above, I am no longer a web developer. Their service was good to me and I enjoyed it tremendously while I had it.
I have therefore no stake in this game and thus no public opinion.
And yet I enjoy the drama of it all so here we are.
WordPress is forking.
Or maybe it isn't a fork.
The core, mesmerizing, (and I do not say this lightly) potentially civilization changing beauty of open source software is the ability to meet different, often diametrically opposing, priorities.

A significant portion of the internet as we know it today is powered by WordPress. It has and will continue to shape the entire scope and scale of internet development for longer than anyone reading this will be alive -- for good and for ill.
WordPress was primarily a blogging system that could build websites as well. With the introduction of externally-based Advanced Custom Fields, it became a powerhouse web builder as well.
The short version: You could easily say "put this image / text / whatever here in the template."
It was a game changer to many smaller scale developers (hi) with a tiny staff. It allowed us (me + team) to grow much more powerful very quickly and very affordably.
Digging into the news further, there is / was chatter about pulling in the core functionality of ACF into WP's main system.
It brings an interesting point to the open source space.
And goes to my original points above.
If you make something open, how much control do you have over it? If you profit from it, how long can this last before it gets pulled into the core?
That is a risk as a developer -- you could potentially lose your business because it gets folded into the larger entity, but on the other hand, until that point, your reward was immediate accessibility to a market / system a million times larger than you, that you had previously no hand in building.
It is a tragedy of the commons.
I had long forgotten this phrase.
I'm familiar with the concept -- a public finite resource is at risk of overuse from all because it is available to all -- it largely joins with the core issue of economics itself -- how do you find balance with finite resources and infinite desires.
It is the nature of art on the internet.
Artists want to make art and it to be seen, they put it online. Audiences do not by nature owe them anything, the art is available to view for free, but without audience support, the art will stop or degrade in posting frequency.
More directly, to the WordPress sphere, what is the responsibility to the core system (thus other users)? What is the responsibility of the users to the core system?
Objectively speaking, building and maintaining a system like WordPress requires a lot of resources.
The open source nature allows for competing priorities to be served provided enough resources, because you can always say "I don't want to follow your path of ABC, I want to do BCD" and then do that.
The open source nature also allows you to say "I made a widget, it costs $100/year"
But the core can say "Hm. That would make our system stronger. Yoink. Now it's ours and is free."
Then you have a market race to push to build the better whatever.
I...
...do not have answers.
To any of this.
I am left realizing.
It feels like macroeconomics and personal economics grinding against each other in a way that is traditionally seen across countries (if not the world) and decades (if not centuries) -- but in this instance, it's a much smaller scale (kinda? WP powers a lot of the internet and influences a significant portion of what it doesn't power).
And weeks and months.
Instead of decades and centuries.
This is a fun piece of bone to chew on.
I freely admit it is fun exclusively because I am not involved. If I were, it would be fucking nerve wracking.

It's fascinating seeing people go "I miss the wild west era of the internet" and then learn they were born in 2003
Like fuck off. By the time you're 6 it was dead. The cutoff is around 06/7, and even that's debateable to have ended earlier
If we're being brutally honest-
1993-1998: True Wild West. Not much could happen due to limited tech, but it was completely unmonitored. I'm honestly surprised to find archives of old chats on Google
1998: The Coppa act is established, further taking effect in 2000. This made people aware that kids can access the internet. Teens barely gave a shit, though it made corporations more aware of them, and how to consider them for a market. It also unfortunately promoted age fraud to access barred login sites
1999-2005/6: User oriented era. This is when a lot of custom sites, blogs, and forums popped up, as well as many image hosting sites that are sadly defunct now. Google being a popular search engine further encouraged discovering these user made sites. Contrary to popular belief, user sites were mostly made and "moderated" by edgy kids and teens, so you WILL see the opinion of a 14yr old. Incidentally, due to domains being expensive, a lot of these teen made forums and personal sites died extremely fast, ignoring raids, doxxing, and flamewars
Video sharing while possible also was really crappy for quality...except for
User created flash games and anims enabled a massive spread of content. Newgrounds was a popular hosting spot. Shame Flash died
Outside that, we least we got bbphp as a solid forum template be popularized after many other ones died. For those less tech savvy, in 2003
We got social media. This was the main goto till smartphones and Twitter got popularized after 2006, and still was going strong until mid 2010s. Despite older netiquette of being encouraged to not post anything indentifiable about yourself, many users expressed themselves with music tastes and eventual personal blogs
2005/6: YouTube is released, as well as Dailymotion. Bootlegged Newgrounds anims popped up for uploads, but also shared tv show clips
Fun thing, before mid 2010s, users can only upload at max 15min of video
Similarly around 2005, Reddit similarly sparked up. More modern image hosting sites spurred around 2007/8

In late November, a deepfake porn maker claiming to be based in the US uploaded a sexually explicit video to the world’s largest site for pornographic deepfakes, featuring TikTok influencer Charli D’Amelio’s face superimposed onto a porn performer’s body. Despite the influencer presumably playing no role in the video’s production, it was viewed more than 8,200 times and captured the attention of other deepfake fans.
“So nice! What program did you use for creating the deepfake??” one user going by the name balascool commented. “I love charli.” D’Amelio’s agent did not reply to a request for comment.
The video’s creator, “DeepWorld23,” has claimed in the comments that the program was a deepfake model hosted on developer platform GitHub. This program was “starred” by 46,300 other users before being disabled in August 2024 after the platform introduced rules banning projects for synthetically creating nonconsensual sexual images, aka deepfake porn. It became available again in November 2024 in an archived format, where users can still access the code.
GitHub’s crackdown is incomplete, as the code—along with others taken down by the developer site—also persists in other repositories on the platform. A WIRED investigation has found more than a dozen GitHub projects linked to deepfake “porn” videos evading detection, extending access to code used for intimate image abuse and highlighting blind spots in the platform’s moderation efforts. WIRED is not naming the projects or websites to avoid amplifying the abuse.
“It’s not easy to always remove something the moment it comes online,” says Henry Ajder, an AI adviser to tech companies like Meta and Adobe on the challenge of moderating open source material online. “At the same time, there were red flags that were pretty clear.”
Implemented in June 2024, GitHub’s policy bans projects that are “designed for, encourage, promote, support, or suggest in any way the use of synthetic or manipulated media for the creation of nonconsensual intimate imagery or any content that would constitute misinformation or disinformation.”
GitHub has disabled at least three repositories identified by WIRED in December 2024 and is clearly taking action on abusive code. But others have popped up elsewhere on the platform, including some with near-identical branding or clear descriptors as “NSFW,” “unlocked” versions, or “bypasses.”
GitHub did not respond to a request for comment.
One project identified by WIRED in December 2024 had branding almost identical to a major project—self-described as the “leading software for creating deepfakes”—which GitHub disabled for several months last year for violating its terms of service. GitHub has also since disabled this additional version.
“It wasn’t hiding,” says Ajder. “It wasn’t particularly subtle.”
However, an archived version of the major repository is still available, and at least six other repositories based on the model were present on GitHub as of January 10, including another branded almost identically.
All of the GitHub projects found by WIRED were at least partially built on code linked to videos on the deepfake porn streaming site. The repositories exist as part of a web of open source software across the web that can be used to make deepfake porn but by its open nature cannot be gate-kept. GitHub repos can be copied, known as a “fork,” and from there tailored freely by developers.
“When we look at intimate image abuse, the vast majority of tools and weaponized use have come from the open source space,” says Ajder. But they often start with well-meaning developers, he says. “Someone creates something they think is interesting or cool and someone with bad intentions recognizes its malicious potential and weaponizes it.”
Some, like the repository disabled in August, have purpose-built communities around them for explicit uses. The model positioned itself as a tool for deepfake porn, claims Ajder, becoming a “funnel” for abuse, which predominantly targets women.
Other videos uploaded to the porn-streaming site by an account crediting AI models downloaded from GitHub featured the faces of popular deepfake targets, celebrities Emma Watson, Taylor Swift, and Anya Taylor-Joy, as well as other less famous but very much real women, superimposed into sexual situations.
The creators freely described the tools they used, including two scrubbed by GitHub but whose code survives in other existing repositories.
Perpetrators on the prowl for deepfakes congregate in many places online, including in covert community forums on Discord and in plain sight on Reddit, compounding deepfake prevention attempts. One Redditor offered their services using the archived repository’s software on September 29. “Could someone do my cousin,” another asked.
Torrents of the main repository banned by GitHub in August are also available in other corners of the web, showing how difficult it is to police open-source deepfake software across the board. Other deepfake porn tools, such as the app DeepNude, have been similarly taken down before new versions popped up.
“There’s so many models, so many different forks in the models, so many different versions, it can be difficult to track down all of them,” says Elizabeth Seger, director of digital policy at cross-party UK think tank Demos. “Once a model is made open source publicly available for download, there’s no way to do a public rollback of that,” she adds.
One deepfake porn creator with 13 manipulated explicit videos of female celebrities credited one prominent GitHub repository marketed as a “NSFW” version of another project encouraging responsible use and explicitly asking users not to use it for nudity. “Learning all available Face Swap AI from GitHUB, not using online services,” their profile on the tube site says, brazenly.
GitHub had already disabled this NSFW version when WIRED identified the deepfake videos. But other repositories branded as “unlocked” versions of the model were available on the platform on January 10, including one with 2,500 “stars.”
“It is technically true that once [a model is] out there it can’t be reversed. But we can still make it harder for people to access,” says Seger.
If left unchecked, she adds, the potential for harm of deepfake “porn” is not just psychological. Its knock-on effects include intimidation and manipulation of women, minorities, and politicians, as has been seen with political deepfakes affecting female politicians globally.
But it’s not too late to get the problem under control, and platforms like GitHub have options, says Seger, including intervening at the point of upload. “If you put a model on GitHub and GitHub said no, and all hosting platforms said no, for a normal person it becomes harder to get that model.”
Reining in deepfake porn made with open source models also relies on policymakers, tech companies, developers and, of course, creators of abusive content themselves.
At least 30 US states also have some legislation addressing deepfake porn, including bans, according to nonprofit Public Citizen’s legislation tracker, though definitions and policies are disparate, and some laws cover only minors. Deepfake creators in the UK will also soon feel the force of the law after the government announced criminalizing the creation of sexually explicit deepfakes, as well as the sharing of them, on January 7.
