Given the support that Roser enjoys from billionaire oligarchs at the pinnacle of the capitalist system, one wonders if it is a coincidence that so much of the data he headlines for public consumption happens to valorize that system. The chief narrative that OWID deploys is that progress is due to economic growth driven by profit-seeking private enterprise and breakneck industrial productivity. He has made this view explicit in his essays published on OWID’s website. No mention that poverty mostly has been alleviated by the power of the state regulating capital, redistributing wealth, and providing services, counter to a system of immense inequities. Roser never mentions the labor, civil rights, and anti-colonialist movements that have pressed for social welfare benefits, safety nets, legal protections and political liberation for the poor. In his superficial telling, “The history of economic growth is the history of how societies leave widespread poverty behind by finding ways to produce more of the goods and services that people need.” While in the vast piles of data at OWID you will find no mention of political movements that have bettered the human condition by challenging the supremacy of capital, you will also find nothing that reveals the complex realities of what happens when societies outside the vaunted system of economic growth are absorbed into it and made to conform to its rules.

OP Age Comparator
Hello OP writers! Have you ever wondered, "how old was this character when X happened?" or had to do the maths on the ages of a cast of characters at a specific point in time?
Would you like to simplify that process to a mere few clicks?
I have created a google sheet which contains the data of the 432 characters with canon ages*, allowing you to compare any set of up to ten people at once!
Tumblr media
*I might be missing some minor characters who had their ages shared, but all the major ones should be available.
How it works is quite simple:
Use the dropdowns in row as needed. These only contain the letters of the alphabet
Use the other dropdown in row 3 to select the character you want. This dropdown will only list characters whose name starts with the letter picked in the first dropdown
That's it!
Tumblr media
Column A lists "years from current canon" (as of August 2024, in case Oda blindsides us with another timeskip lol)
Column B lists some major events that happened that year, up to 38 years before canon. For more events check out the World Timeline on the wiki
Column C lists the in-universe year
The link provided above (and also here) only allows for using dropdowns. Please feel free to copy the entire sheet into your own drive if this is something you would find useful!
If there are any errors you find, or something runs wrong, please do let me know and I'll fix it ASAP!
I cannot guarantee the sheet could run in excel or anyplace outside of google sheets. I can guarantee the sheet won't run if you only copy the visible tab or its contents alone xD
Edit Aug 20th, I slightly optimized the layout of the dropdowns due to a sudden "hey i can just do it like this" realization haha
Please enjoy!

Everyone on the Internet keeps yelling about holding people accountable and this and that punishment, but they have no interest in improvement. What happened to learning from your bad behaviour and getting better?
I follow an American guy on YouTube who was in prison for 19 years for armed robbery and assault and he seems to have used that time to better himself, to get an actual education and improve as a person. He acknowledges his crimes and that he has to constantly work on himself, but he also invests a lot of time in outreach and helping young incarcerated people so they don't get deeper into the criminal world.
His behaviour at 18 shouldn't be excused, obviously, the incarceration was warranted - and this might be my Scandinavian culture speaking - but I believe in improvement, not punishment for the sake of it. So when I follow that guy, I'm trying to understand him, trying to follow his progress and his circumstances.
Obviously not all crimes are equal, that goes without saying, some people can't improve and are dangerous, some simply don't have the insight to understand what they did wrong, but fundamentally I believe humans can learn to do better and I don't understand why so many people won't let them or don't want them to.
I also believe that there are psychological reasons for most human behaviour, especially if it deviates from well-adjusted social patterns, and I think we benefit from trying to understand these cases rather than condeming them wholesale. We don't have to personally approve of a behaviour to try to understand it.

There's nothing like the creeping dread of making an extremely simple data ask and being told it's complicated, difficult, and will take time.
Like, holy shit, what's going on under the hood that makes this so hard. What do you mean the maps are randomly missing records and you need several weeks to rerun them. What do you mean you can't just send me the shapefiles. How are you generating these??? What is happening in there??????? WHAT IS YOUR DATABASE STRUCTURE???????

Introducing Olivia Zhang, the artist behind “Over the Years.”
"Over the Years" is a multimedia artwork that bridges imaginative storytelling and climate data science. Inspired by the role of location: how people interact with each other, with our histories, and with our environment, this artwork features a timelapse of satellite imagery, overlaid and blended with a personal portrait. Accompanying these visuals is a poignant poem that delves into the artist’s personal fears and hopes regarding the escalating climate crisis. Through this fusion of data visualization and intimate self-expression, the artwork seeks to humanize the often impersonal nature of climate science, making the pressing issues of environmental change more relatable and emotionally resonant. By visually and lyrically intertwining the stark realities of climate data with the deeply human response to our uncertain future, "Over the Years" transforms abstract visuals of “change for the worse” into a narrative that speaks to both urgency and our shared humanity.
Olivia Zhang is from New Orleans, LA and grew up in South Florida, where she discovered her passion for climate action and environmental justice. As a geography and data science student at the University of Florida, she is passionate about supporting community-centered initiatives through research and data storytelling. Art and storytelling are interwoven through everything she does.
