A Pivot To Video tends to arrive in stages, with each stage being more expensive and producing less interesting content as things progress. Usually it goes like this: The experimentation phase, the factory phase, and the bloat phase. A great editor I worked for during the second Pivot To Video, roughly 2013-2017, who, herself worked through the first, roughly 2003-2007, described it as a massive waste of resources that wastes more resources as it becomes clearer to everyone not directly involved how much of a waste of resources it is. I’m paraphrasing. It’s a fundamental issue with video as a medium that online platforms haven’t fixed and, I suspect, never will because it makes user-generated content platforms feel more professional and consistent. Like TV. The cost to produce video content always balloons as you add more people, more tools, more structure to the workflow, pushing out smaller creators and teams. And even with the pandemic lowering the barrier of entry for making video online considerably, it’s still happening again. We’re in the bloat phase now. The Washington Post put out a great piece last week addressing all of this, calling it the “beastification of YouTube,” which it describes as “hyper-engaging, fast-paced videos with frequent action on screen.” It’s also referred to as “retention editing” in thousands of tutorials you’ll find on YouTube. And this is, largely, a YouTube-driven trend. The importance of YouTube as a cable TV replacement and Netflix competitor is why MrBeast, the platform’s biggest star, is spending between $3-$5 million per video right now, up from around $200,000 a video just a few years ago. To put that absolutely outrageous number in perspective, a MrBeast video is roughly the same cost per video as any episode from the first five seasons of Game Of Thrones. But it’s not just YouTube that is tweaked for retention editing. It’s happening on TikTok, as well. Guides last year were saying you had to capture viewers in the first three seconds. I’ve read a few guides from this year that are now saying hooking a TikTok user has to happen in the first 1.5 seconds. There’s an oft-quoted “shoeshine boy” theory of markets, usually attributed to Joe Kennedy in the late 1920s, who said that when the boy shining his shoes had stock tips, he knew the market was about to collapse. Well, here’s a similar rule for digital video: If you’re trying to optimize your video in microseconds, the video pivot is probably already over.

Do you miss working in an office? Or being in a studio?
Working in an office is a real bummer, especially when you're the content team. There's always a weird air of "you guys just play video games all day" from some of the people that don't work in or around your group and it gets to be a little exhausting. Some of that's self-inflicted, I suppose, I mean I never went out of my way to "own a button-up shirt" or "wear slacks" or whatever to look the part.
A small office, small company where everyone is on the same team, working on the same core batch of things is really nice. It's nice when you can just stand up and walk over to someone to get an answer instead of sending an email and setting up a meeting so that all the "stakeholders" are involved.
While I'd definitely like to overhaul just about everything about my presentation, being in a studio for the size of this team (me) would be a total waste. Is it nice to have people working with you who handle the entire job of cutting and posting video? Absolutely. But I've spent a bunch of time optimizing various parts of my workflow to make that turnaround pretty quick and painless.
So "being in a studio" to me would involve "having a team" and that would allow me to do more and probably get more out of the things I'm already doing. But would the cost of additional people be offset by the increase in... I don't know, views, patrons, subscribers? That's definitely murkier.
I do think doing something larger would be fun, but for a lot of reasons I don't think now is the right time to really be pursuing something like that. When the winds change, I hope I'm ready to take advantage of all that, I guess? I don't know. The road ahead is weird, AI popping up and wrecking everything has made it a little tougher to predict when, if ever, journalism will be back on the menu.

I know so many people have shared their own sentiment about the watcher situation and I'm basically jumping into an overfilled pool, but I literally can't stop thinking about this one from the business side of things, so pls have some ramblings. behind a cut bc boy did this get long
All of this is just armchair observations as someone who's been in marketing, optimization, and had my fair share of budget-strapped projects over the years, and who is currently working on strategies to drive growth via marketing:
If it's purely about money - before any of this, they should have exhausted their existing options. Maybe hire a dedicated marketing person to develop a growth and content strategy around Patreon to drive value. Beyond that, use that marketing person to drive awareness campaigns to get people to Patreon with a goal to 5x your Patron count, because there was definitely untapped potential there
If it's about content - every artist has their right to make what they want, but when you start asking people to pay for it, now you have to do your research. Do a survey with a substantive response rate to understand if people even want the shows that you want to produce. Again, you have a right as an artist to produce what you want, but asking your fanbase to pay for things that they don't want is a lot. This is when you need sponsorship help (or seed money and tbh, I'm not ruling out that they don't have some of that behind the scenes). I saw a comment that summed it up really well that when Buzzfeed was paying for Worth It, there was a small thrill of seeing them spend a company's money, but now it's the subscribers money. At that point, if you actually want to be marketable and successful, you need a pulse on what people are willing to pay for vs want for free. If you're spending all your money on high production values for shows that maybe 10% of your audience want, it's wasted resources
I won't speak to the staffing levels because there's likely a lot of nuance there, but I will say that there are probably workflow and resource improvements that could've been done to at least make the staff levels more efficient. This comes down to someone in a process role, which might have been done! Obviously I don't have a peek under the hood and I know they've discussed restructuring before, but this is a matter of scale and goes back to the second point -- there's a lot of 'if we build it, they will come' mentality here, but again, if you're not building what they want ... no, they won't, especially when Dropout and Netflix and Disney+ and other subscribers are building right beside you.
If they were dead-set on this, then should have hired a marketing/PR person to plan this launch for them. Dropout, anecdotally, is an example I go back to. I still remember seeing the stings at the end of videos about it and I remember going 'hey, I'm not going to pay for that' for years. But they were deliberate in their strategy of posting content, they didn't immediately shove behind the paywall, and they built up a catalogue with content that it did then make sense to pay (and a reasonable rate for the value!). The abrupt launch without a content plan to communicate value was an odd choice. I also think that survey I mentioned before should have delved into willingness to pay so they could actually understand where the ceiling kicks in and where no matter how much people want to pay that might not match up with what they're willing to. You'd get your average price there and then you could realistically do a workback schedule to understand the content you can produce, which could have then be used to create a content pipeline
Honestly, I think it all comes down to them wanting to pursue their dreams and more power to them. I love that they have a mission statement to make television quality videos -- but here's the thing, you have an existing audience and given the reaction, it's becoming clear that your mission statement and your audience's core wants of your product don't align, which means that something has to get sacrificed ...and unfortunately, in this case, I think it's the goodwill of a large portion of the audience that gets the knife because I really don't think this one's getting walked back
Like I said earlier, I do have some suspicions that maybe there's seed money or financial backing in this from investors (they solicited this in the past), but they've lacked a clear strategy around growth and marketing to buffer their finances in the past and it doesn't fill me with a lot of optimism that things will change because they're behind a paywall. For those who intend to subscribe, I think it's great and I think that it proves that yes, there is going to be an audience for them -- it's just always a question of numbers and whether that audience is their target to break even. I had suspicions their big announcement was this and I was honestly planning to subscribe too until I saw the price point and the lack of future scheduling news. Unfortunately, given the amount of subscriptions I already have, it didn't make sense, but if it were cheaper and there was a more robust content plan, I probably would be there too.

not enough people know about the rabbit hole. its all over the internet, productivity youtube, tutorial hell, social media drama, etc. Anything that takes up time you could be spending being actually entertained by something novel and thought provoking.
I'm the kind of person who spends an entire day on youtube watching videos I don't really care about instead of doing literally anything else. I didn't understand why. I think part of the reason why is that this kind of productivity content, mindset bullshit is very effective at making it feel like your learning something. I've spent an entire evening of my short life learning about neovim configurations when I don't even use the damn thing for anything fancier then editing a config file once in a while, but I _felt_ like I was learning about something important and useful.
I need to get out of the rabbit hole. I need to stop trying to optimize every aspect of my life and just start doing things again. Part of what got me to realize this was my speedrunning practice. It was the only aspect of my life that I actively committed to putting in effort towards everyday and I saw results. I'm consistent now, even if I'm still not where I want to be. Meanwhile, I've spent more hours worrying about my writing workflow then actually writing things. Same with programming, game dev, school, hygiene, sleep, etc.
Sorry for the ramble but I need to commit to get away from the rabbit hole and this is my way of doing that. It's on the internet now. If I ever find myself falling into it again I can read this post back. Maybe it might help someone

Honestly like using Krita nore than csp, tried both, missed the masks in krita but I got used to it, CSP just doesn't have what krita has (fun eraser feature for brushes! You can do it in csp but it's work)
Also doesn't have the same pencils that i love, and I don't wanna have to scourge through free content
hmm, i see your point, it's very true krita did the perfect optimal minimal features, which csp made unbearably confusing. Also the brush engines did not started to overwhelm the pc when used in a big size. I give that, i still resent csp to hide really useful functions. OH do not start me at the text tool, HOw can actual comic artist use that hell of a tool! Like did you know Dungeon Meshi (my current new fave media) was made with CSP? Whit that total unorganised mess of a programme!
But i'm overly satisfied with the natural feeling materials and brushes. I can confuse people with my digital art to believe I used analogue good ol' paint. Which is such a surprising compliment. Also the colour engine is so satisfying. Besides, most importantly, against all odds, it's still suits me better, it's just matches with my workflow.
So there is no actual concrete reason why i could say CSP better than any other software besides my simple preference, and that my past experiences with other drawing programmes i found it the most satisfying.
In conclusion, i believe the real differences are the skill and preferences of the artist that defines the tool, not otherwise.
(Right now, i drawn a bunch of cats, and i'm quite happy with the results.)

When compared to traditional office spaces, serviced offices offer a cost-efficient solution. With serviced offices, you eliminate the need for upfront capital investments and ongoing maintenance expenses. The rental fees typically encompass amenities such as utilities, internet access, and office furniture, reducing your overhead costs. Additionally, serviced offices provide access to shared resources, such as meeting rooms and breakout areas, further maximizing cost efficiency.
Networking and Collaboration
Serviced offices foster a vibrant community of professionals from various industries and backgrounds. This presents unique networking opportunities and the potential for collaboration. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals can spark creativity, inspire innovation, and lead to valuable partnerships. Many serviced offices also organize networking events, workshops, and community activities to facilitate connections among members. By working in a serviced office, you tap into a diverse network that can contribute to your business growth.
Professional Environment and Amenities
Serviced offices are designed to provide a professional and productive work environment. These spaces are equipped with modern amenities, including high-speed internet, state-of-the-art technology, and ergonomic furniture. The stylish interiors and well-maintained facilities create a positive impression on clients and visitors. In addition, serviced offices often offer reception services, mail handling, and access to on-site support staff, ensuring your business operations run smoothly.
Enhanced Productivity
One of the key advantages of serviced offices is the boost they provide to productivity. These spaces are specifically designed to optimize workflow and minimize distractions. With dedicated workstations and private offices, you can focus on your tasks without interruptions. Moreover, the collaborative atmosphere and opportunities for knowledge exchange can inspire creativity and innovation. Serviced offices also provide access to amenities like quiet zones, communal lounges, and breakout areas, allowing you to recharge and collaborate effectively.
Comparison with Traditional Offices
When comparing serviced offices to traditional office spaces, the benefits are clear. Traditional offices often require long-term leases, extensive setup costs, and ongoing maintenance expenses. On the other hand, serviced offices offer flexible terms, cost efficiency, and a ready-to-use workspace. Traditional offices lack the vibrant community and networking opportunities that serviced offices provide. Moreover, serviced offices often offer additional perks such as access to business support services, networking events, and professional development opportunities.
Conclusion
Serviced offices have emerged as a game-changer in the modern business landscape. The benefits of flexibility, cost efficiency, networking opportunities, and enhanced productivity make serviced offices an attractive option for businesses of all sizes. By embracing the serviced office model, you can create a dynamic and agile workspace that fosters growth and success. Take advantage of the numerous amenities and resources offered by serviced offices and revolutionize the way you work.
