Hustler Books was the nicest when the light was low and there were clouds in the sky. Fat droplets of rain raced each other down the window. Someone had strung maple-leaf shaped fairy lights behind the desk, where two of the staff were standing around, chatting. One of them was Jack. Alex’s heart skipped a beat.

Five months ago, Jack left Alex, along with their two children. Alex is trying hard to not fall apart, and so are their kids.

Alex is a prisoner who has been denied parole despite being deserving of it. John is a gullible new guard. Alex plans to escape, and John is his ticket to be able to do so.

The only thing that gets Alex through a breakup is chocolate. And maybe the candy store’s cashier.

Mondays suck. Its common knowledge, no one likes Monday because it marks the official end of the weekend and the start of a gruelling week that no one wants to get stuck into. Monday mornings are the worst. Alex pulls himself out of his car seat, looking up at the large office building in front of him and sighing. He hates work. Adjusting his tie he ducks into his car, grabbing his messenger bag and slinging it over his shoulder, before grabbing the two coffees off of the passenger seat. The thing is, today isn’t just an ordinary moody Monday, this Monday he’s asking his boss for a raise. Yep, that’s right, a payrise, because considering just how much work he does, he seriously does not get paid enough.

But not for Jack, no. The road he walks is a straight path. There are no bends and twists and surprises lurking round the corner, not as far as he can see.

Alex stands on the other side of the door frame, smiling gently at John. There’s a five year old with his arms wrapped around Alex’s legs but Alex doesn’t seem to notice. “Hey. Just dropping in like I said I would. Brought you coffee,” he says softly as he holds a paper Starbucks cup out in his hands.

The doctor said it’s there. She pointed at it on the ultrasound screen and congratulated them. They’re having a baby. He and Alex. A baby.

Oh God, this game is not funny anymore and Alex wanted out. Jack is only slightly taller than him so an elbow to the face wouldn’t be so hard to execute and while Jack recovers from the unexpected blow Alex can grab a boxer and a shirt and run out or something.

Except Jack’s free hand was now on top of the one Alex had on his towel’s knot and. Oh God.
