Since I'd been talking a lot about JP Vesperia (primarily Yuri and Flynn and the heavy changes that surround them, and because I'm highly passionate about them in their original context), I wanted to compile some more jarring if not outright glaring mistakes in the localization (or what were likely intentional changes, because I can't look at some of these and just call them "mistakes"). I'm not going to mention every little change throughout the game, so smaller things I'll mostly be leaving out (namely things that don't really affect characters or context). I primarily just wanted to give some insight on some of the bigger parts.
Some of the changes seem to have been mistakes in translation itself (not just localization, but misunderstanding what was being said in general; such as, there's an instance I mention of that between Patty and Don), so I've got some mentions hanging around for clarity purposes as some scenes didn't make much sense, likely because of this.
Vocal tone with Yuri was the most prominent issue that got me making this, and the context that was changed being right after if not equally next to that (most often also with Yuri but also Flynn).
This is something that has been bothering me for a while and I've been wanting to share this stuff with people interested in seeing the game with its original context. Generally speaking, the plot and story themselves are on point. The majority of the differences surround Yuri and Flynn respectively, so there's going to be a lot of mention of them throughout.
I've also posted video clips of my favorite scenes and the heavy changes, so consider those a supplement to this and vice versa.
Part 2.
Part 3.
Part 4.
(Other) GTF Favorites.
Note because people have vagueposted about me since making these: Do not start "dub versus sub hurr hurr" arguments with me or imply that's what I'm doing with these. Firstly, Japanese is a language, not your English subtitles. Secondly, these posts are not in main tags and I am not bothering anyone by making posts of my feelings on my own blog related to these facts. If you have time to vaguepost and whine about my untagged opinions after hatereading (or not even reading it at all and making stupid assumptions), you have time to be nice to people and find something fun to do. Lastly, I've said many times that the entire loc/dub in this game is not bad. There are specific things I take issue with. It does not mean I'm anti dub and hate all dubs. It does not mean I go out of my way to find dub fans and start shit with them.
Update: Went back through to correct the way I used "dub" and "localization" interchangeably. I don't do that anymore bc "dub" obviously refers to the dubbing of foreign media, and dubbing is a part of the localization process. Lines themselves are not the dubbing, and the dubbing is the vocals. Thus, I edited cases where I really didn't think about that while writing these and changed mistaken "dub" mentions as needed.
---
I'd like to preface this by mentioning the chief director and producer of the game itself has also spoken about localization inaccuracy issues, so that's something to keep in mind (it's in Japanese, but you should be able to use the offered post translator).
I'd also like to preface this by mentioning that in the original, Yuri is more playful and relaxed/casual (generally but including with Flynn, which the dub pretty much entirely changed until arc 3), but also gentler and softer. He has a very large variety of tonal behaviors/tonal "moods" that were pretty much nuked from the dub.
Basically, to get a better experience for this Yuri, I can only really recommend playing the game in JP audio. Obviously you won't get the actual context because all you'll have is the loc context, but that's also partly why I'm making these posts - to cover the contextual changes while the video clips cover some of the tonal changes (because lbh I don't expect anyone to actually go watch the entire game in JP with subtitles unless you're as insanely dedicated as I am, and I'm largely doing it out of my love for the original Yuri and Flynn and my disdain for how the localization treated them).
As a heads up, there won't be many skits in here because I'm going through a specific YT playthrough for these screenshots. Specific skits won't always come up in the playthrough in question, and I can't find a whole list of skits in JP anywhere online. I don't have all skits unlocked in my own save either yet (you can unlock all skits with Grade which I have yet to do in the DE), so I can't use that to compare all skits right now.
There are plenty of small changes here and there that I won't be including in these posts because there are some sentence changes that aren't impactful but do exist. I just don't want to be here for a year covering the random changes that don't matter much. I'm also not going to include details of a lot of honorifics because I'd be here all day, but there is one one major instance that I mention later on.
For reference if anything wants to actually watch the game in JP with the subs (it goes until just after Hypionia), most of the references come from here. Since in some cases the subber just reused localized text even when the context wasn't the same, I did bring some of those up in these posts too. These were subbed before the DE version came out. I used screenshots with subs where possible to make it easier to follow along.
I have a lot of passion for JP Yuri and I hope I can pass on some of that passion to others. 🙏
Apologies in advance if some of these sound cranky. If I sound cranky about some specific changes, it's probably because I am.
---
Since I talked about the whole, Raven being shady and Yuri therefore not being grateful to him incident that the localization for some reason butchered and made Yuri sound like a generally ungrateful or just outright dumb person who doesn't understand gratitude, I'll summarize that one again here:
Yuri has a skit with Estelle originally talking about how he can't find himself being grateful to someone like Raven for showing him how to sneak out of the castle. Basically, Raven is shady and he's not sure he should be grateful to someone like that, and is confused as to why Estelle would be so grateful when she doesn't even know him (because in his mind, he isn't sure he wants to trust a guy with those vibes). The loc just kinda... makes him sound like an ungrateful jerk and not so much because he's not sure he wants to trust Raven. It doesn't really sound like it's an issue of his with Raven specifically but more that he just generally doesn't feel grateful for the aid (and that in general one shouldn't feel grateful for aid like this), which gives off a really wrong impression of him that doesn't hold up throughout the game. Yuri wasn't wholly ungrateful for the gesture itself, but because of who it came from (and I imagine a weird peppy guy in jail is good cause to be skeptical).
Tumblr media
We start off we a classic "Yuri, you idiot!" that was changed to "come on already!".
Tumblr media
Yuri's response to Estelle mentioning he'd been in the knights doesn't actually give a time frame for how long he'd been there (the loc made up three months, but there was never originally even a time frame given).
Tumblr media
Here when Yuri asks Estelle why she can't just leave, her response indicates she actually does know why. The loc made it more ambiguous, which could be easily misinterpreted as she really doesn't know, so I'm dropping this one here.
Tumblr media
For some reason the localization seemed to have Estelle responding to Karol directly about the ace always performing their attack last ("I don't think so"). What she was referring to was the tiny monster that walked by, asking for confirmation that that monster was not the eggbear they were looking for (I wasn't gonna fight with the video to get a better screenshot without the annoying YT red bar in the way so the monster is in the corner mid-movement lol). Not sure if that was a genuine mistake, but it was an odd one.
(Also, side note and not putting an image here because it's more general, but Yuri refers to Karol as "Karol-sensei" which was translated in the localization to "Captain Karol". Basically, Yuri calls him "sensei" because that's a teacher/professor, and he's making a play on Karol's knowledge and being their "teacher" about monsters/maps/etc.)
Tumblr media
I'd say this is more along the lines of overexaggerating and not overreacting, but this line was literally changed to "haha" in the loc. The whole point wasn't that Yuri just brushed her comment off or found it funny. At this point he still literally thinks she's exaggerating about her lack of knowledge out in the world, her excitement, etc.
Not the only instance you'll find of the loc just changing entire sentences to something meaningless as if they ??? didn't know what it meant (they actually changed Patty saying an entire sentence to "aye"). In some cases they added entire sentences that weren't even there...
Tumblr media
Even though I can kind of see where they went with the loc here, the point was supposed to be that Flynn actively thought he would be happy for Yuri to go outside the barrier and see the world.
The loc changed this to Flynn saying that he, in the now, is happy that Yuri is outside the barrier, but then says he got a little less happy when he saw the wanted poster, indicating he was previously happy but got less happy, yet says in that moment that he is happy.
It's a weird case of (past/present) tense usage for the most part, but they also removed the fact that Flynn is literally saying "I thought I would be happy" (thus expressing he'd been wanting Yuri to see the world outside the barrier and would've been happy to find out he did). The reason he's not finding himself happy is because of the wanted poster and the crimes listed on it, following up that his honest happiness for Yuri (ultimately because of the poster) was a lie.
This also means they removed Flynn expressing the honesty of his happiness for a positive concept for Yuri, which, given all the changes toward Flynn in the loc/dub, already now takes away from the fact that he'd been actively hoping for good things for someone and we're left with this more sarcastic take on him being "happy" (his line is more like, "but I lost my sense of genuine happiness when I saw this!").
Obviously his happiness wasn't really a lie because most of the crimes were falsified (primarily the ones that would make him actually mad, because Flynn has had to have been aware this whole time that Yuri has committed small time crimes for the past few years now), but at the time, the focus on this conversation is that Flynn thought he'd be happy at a time that Yuri left the barrier; meaning he'd been hoping for it prior to it happening.
I'm also mentioning it because it's the very first in a whole line of changes the loc/dub made to their relationship (and it's their first in game interaction ffs) and to Flynn himself as he's perceived as a character. The original is much more expressive of how important they are to each other in a lot of various ways.
Inserting the JP audio version of the following scene with Flynn here.
And... the following one from there.
Tumblr media
This was changed to "damn, we if lose our balance...". I know they did it because Yuri had just fallen over, but I'm including this one because the context isn't... really the same thing to me?
Tumblr media
This loc change is a bit odd to me. They had him saying something along the lines of "she is a princess after all" in the loc, regarding the council backing her.
The original context is more like, the council is backing her and he's hearing it directly from Ioder and he probably doubts Ioder would lie like that or about that, cementing that yes, she truly is, like he suspected, a princess, but it's almost still a bit odd to know. It's sort of like, he knew/had suspicions but hearing it directly from Ioder just confirms it for certain.
The loc just made it sound like well yeah, it's obvious they'd want to back her, she's a princess... but Ioder is a prince, so that doesn't explain why they're not backing him. She is a princess after all, so of course they'd back her... but what's stopping them from backing the prince?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another weird one for me. In the loc Yuri says that "even the Commandant was a little in over his head", when he actually... really wasn't? All he did was step in. Things got bad enough that he had to, but he wasn't in over his head. Not sure how or why the loc ended up with that.
Tumblr media
An example of the loc having a habit of just adding in random lines that didn't actually exist (and in this case the one added didn't even contextually make sense. This was no thank you from him, this was literally him making Yuri do something for him because he was going to ask Flynn for a favor and ended up with Yuri in the cell instead).
Tumblr media
Another super weird one in the loc. They had Yuri saying Flynn was "too" late, implying he hadn't made it in time, but he did. He made it just before the battle started, but the original context only says he's late, not too late (which makes sense given that they were ready to fight but hadn't started yet).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was changed to Yuri just mentioning there was one way they could get out of there without actually saying what it was, and Judith saying if he thinks it might work what's the harm in trying it out. Not sure why they changed Yuri literally telling her his plan, so... again, a super weird change that I don't get why they didn't just keep the context the way it was.
Third image was changed to "someone get me away from this psycho", which... I also don't get why they put that there unless they just wanted so much flavor text that they wanted to change the whole "they're in a fight and he's telling her not to come over here because he's pissed at her because they're fighting" part of the fake fight they had going on.
Not one I have a huge problem with, but definitely good examples of them going out of their way to change just... perfectly normal stuff that literally has no reason to be changed? Some of it is flavor text and some of it feels over the top for me. Stuff that makes me like... why would you change that when there was no reason to? Could be more of a personal pet peeve of mine, but I just don't like unnecessary changes when there was nothing wrong or odd about the original text and doesn't at all come off odd in English. Unfortunately Vesperia got littered with those.
Tumblr media
I didn't feel like getting a whole video for this, but basically Judith gives a little laugh instead of just the more upset/distressed(?) sound she made in the dub. Feels more fitting imo to keep up the "lie" Yuri started for her. The dub makes it seem more like she feels guilty, versus here she's giving a little forced giggle to go along with it. Again, a change I'm not sure why they put in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ngl I get completely different vibes from these. The JP comes across more as concern, rather than... treating them like they're some mob on the loose...?
Once again, this gives off negative vibes toward Flynn as a character imo.
Tumblr media
Here Judith gives more of a reason for coming with them, which they changed in the loc to "with the circumstances being what they are, this is just how things turned out". Reasonably, she didn't have to stick around after they ran from Dahngrest, but here she gives a quick "reason".
Tumblr media
The loc changed this to "I'll bet he is". They were just told he's the current magistrate in Heliord, and all Yuri says here expresses he's letting it sink in and realizing exactly why all this is happening here. It's not a huge story beat or anything that gets changed, but it's an example of changing things that don't need to be changed as if trying to play things up in a way that... doesn't feel necessary to me? In this case the situation is kind of dawning on Yuri as he realizes how bad this situation could be/why it's like it is, but in the loc it comes across as more just unimpressed and "of course he'd do that".
Tumblr media
An unfortunate, classic moment of them changing how much Yuri believes in and trusts Flynn. They changed this to "gotta run, Flynn!" and he just... leaves. I'm sorry but in what universe does "leave the rest to you" equal "gotta run"???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one is one of those cases where the localization text was super awkward and wonky, and worse, they actually voiced it that way (like "we have guild's job to deal with". Yes, they actually voiced it that way too on top of everything else grammatically wonky with the entire conversation that they didn't bother fixing when the DE came out).
Also here, they changed what Yuri says about Cumore and Flynn. "I don't know how I could explain this to Flynn" doesn't, at least to me, carry the same weight as Yuri actually feeling ashamed (in the loc he says "what a shame", but does not express shame, versus him saying "how pathetic" and expressing shame in feeling pathetic) and saying he can't even face Flynn because Cumore got away. The thing is, Yuri does tend to posture, so when he fails at something, it hits him pretty hard.
Tumblr media
And let's be honest, this just hits way harder than "he will get what he deserves".
Interestingly, Yuri could also fall into the category of viewing himself as sinful later on, which I talk about in my favorites post and the usage of "crime" and "sin" within the JP context.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not particularly important, but just another (more mild) case and example of how the loc just randomly changed tone/mood/wording for no reason.
Tumblr media
Another case of Yuri being more aggressive in the dub than he actually was. Here, all he says is just a plain statement. In the dub, he has an attitude about it and says it in a tone that's more insulting that Ioder didn't know about Heracles.
This isn't the only case of dub Yuri acting aggressively toward Ioder when he wasn't supposed to be and we'll get to that, but Ioder is another similar case of the dub making Yuri unnecessarily vocally rude (despite that Ioder is very polite toward Yuri).
Tumblr media
(I left out the subtitles because all they did was copy the Eng localization, which kinda defeats the point of this post LOL. This will be the case going forward for any same circumstances.)
This one's a more interesting tidbit to me and less of a harmful change (i.e. I find that a lot of if not most changes relative to Flynn do more harm than good when compared with the original context). Basically it's saying "sweet mask and sharp eyes", implying Flynn's sweet face is a mask and saying it contrasts with his sharp eyes. I could get into a whole rant about why I love that in relation to some side material, but even in the game itself, there's the knight Flynn with his sweet, polite side and his real side that only shows when he's around Yuri (basically, who Flynn has to be for his job and who he actually is as a person, which he only gets to be around someone who knows the real him).
I'd guess this got changed in the loc because they weren't sure how to word it, though there's no mention of "heartthrob" here at all and instead actually says "sweet mask" as if, again, to say his sweetness is just a mask. It's actually a very interestingly accurate representation of his character - how he tends to not be himself when he's being "knight Flynn", and how that sweet face is contrasted by the look in his eyes (which they say, you know, eyes are the windows to the soul, so this would imply the sweet face is the mask and the eyes are the real Flynn. And of course, this Flynn is implied to show himself in his sparring with Yuri in Aurnion, where sword fighting is the best way to express himself. This isn't to say Flynn being a nice person in and of itself is a lie, but that his overly polite, respectful, kind knight side is a sweet mask contrasted to the man who loves to fight and has a sharp look in his eyes)
For now, we'll be back at Mantaic in the next post (due to image per post limit).
#Tales of Vesperia#GTF JP Vesperia Things#GTF Vesperia Localization Woes#really like... a lot of the time? the other characters weren't changed all that much#it's primarily Yuri who got this weird shift where they just... flattened his personality?#but some of the biggest offenders ended up being some of the most important scenes in the game which is what bothers me#and sometimes the localization is pretty much just... on point with the plot dialogue and other characters#yet for some reason they just... changed a lot of tone for Yuri?#it's just like... Yuri will have personality in his tone and they instead make dub Yuri speak it in a flat way in those moments#this did happen with the original dubbing quite a bit but it's also just SUPER noticeable with the new lines#my suggestion would be to at least play the game w/ JP dialogue and see how you feel coming out of it if you're a fan of Yuri and/or Flynn#and if you like it enough then I'd suggest watching the playthrough in JP that these screenshots came from if you're RLY dedicated lol#it's not JUST Yuri it's just /dominantly/ Yuri. other odd lines just didn't... go as hard?#like Raven and Karol especially go pretty hard on their lines in JP and the Schwann stuff with Karol was OOF#or if you'd rather just skip to watching it in JP I mean be my guest lol I just know some ppl might rather PLAY it#I just feel like... like... even tho not everything in the dub is horrendous... if you're a YURI fan?#it's hard to go back to the dub (impossible for me ngl) when you have this actual silly little guy#who is a lot more emotional and wholesome and Yuri isn't acting like he has a stick up his dubbed ass in some scenes#I still prefer the 360 version plot-wise for the most part and it's a mixed bag there a bit but#I can't get JP audio on the 360 so. it's the struggle ig.#in my case though it's this feeling of like... them wanting to create an image onto Yuri that wasn't supposed to be there?#obviously I don't know what went on in the loc room but I do know I walked out looking at dub Yuri like#him and the original Yuri aren't even the same. I get so frustrated with dub Yuri's unnecessary ATTITUDE sometimes#which wasn't ever a problem for me period in JP. he's emotional and sincere WAY more often#also lbh I cannot reasonably picture dub Yuri all dressed up and pretty the way he is in official artwork LOL#and that's the thing. I see them so differently it's like they're different people#I also just feel like the dub was like. he doesn't fit OUR vision for him. what WE want him to be like#and again I don't know what went on in that loc room but I DO know that's how I came out feeling from this game#anyway this is in hope more ppl will come to love JP Yuri's personality and stuff#but yeah more next time on ''why did you do this to my sweet baby boy''

So, I've only seen one Studio Ghibli film.
I know, that's terrible.
Oh god, I can't even remember the name. I'm such a bad nerd.
It has the big scary hockey mask.
Hang on...
Spirited Away!
Anyway, a while back I... acquired... the entire collection.
I actually went to great lengths to find the highest quality version with the best audio and video. I combined multiple versions in some cases. Each one has the English dub and the original Japanese track. I even tracked down the best version of the subtitles. I Frankenstein'd all of these elements together and probably have the definitive Ghibli collection.
And after all of that effort I was going to do a big marathon and finally watch them all.
And then my dad got sicker and I just... forgot.
Since then I've been waiting until I was in the right mood. Because I feel like you need to be in a certain headspace to watch these movies. At least that is how Spirited Away felt.
And I don't know if I am in the mood, but I thought I would try and see if I am feeling Ghibli at the moment.
I'm just not sure where to start. Do I just do chronological? Should I pick at random? Maybe I should watch the top rated one first to get me excited about watching the others.
I dunno. Any thoughts?

Little ninja fans of present day and past, I began watching RC9GN in December of 2012, and it changed my life forever, now it's 2024 and I'm nearing 30, time sure flies! Anyways I've been working on cleaning out my computer files and found a bunch and I mean A BUNCH of Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja promotional material and side content. I pretty much have most things that came out from 2012 - 2015 pertaining to the show.
I imagine a lot of these things have been lost to time as some of it was originally posted was from the DisneyXD website, and variations of the DisneyXD website (meaning from other countries). I have interviews, bumpers, dubs of episodes, even footage of some of the old RC9GN games, and Randy cameos (I saved footage of someone playing the RC9GN Poptropica promo!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also have a clip from WSFA where they reported on the fan that wrote Rachel's song. I had thought it was posted to youtube but I can't find it again so maybe they removed it, it's not on the article that's still up either! Guess it's good I saved it. (The article isn't entirely accurate, I believe she said she got the internship because of her song)
I also have a few clips of other dubs, including an Italian dub of the song and music video "GO NINJA GO," that's pretty cool! I also found audio files of the raw music from the show! I can't even remember how I got that. (they are unfortunately not named)
I have some less quality stuff like literally me just recording promos and bumpers off of the TV screen lol. Some of these also include snips of other Disney XD bumpers and promos though.
Anyways, I don't want this stuff kept all to my self as I see a lot of it is lost to time, if not hard to find. And oh look at that looks like I have a handy little sideblog I never used that's perfect for this! @theninjanomicon (I'll pretty it up later), so over time I'll probably share some of it on there.
Younger me was unfortunately not very thorough in the archiving, so some titles, dates, names, and exactly where I got them from, are missing, but I can give a rough time frame and where I got these from that I can remember. (another reason why I'm doing it! to mark down what I can remember before I forget anymore of it)
I wouldn't be uploading any full episodes for obvious reasons but might upload clips of some of the alternate dubs I have. And yes I have the pilot, which I can't share either but I do have STORYBOARDS from the pilot (which up until this year was our only reference for this "kim possible style" it used to have) which maybe I can share as I got it from the storyboarder's portfolio which was public back when I got it.
I might add some commentaries under a readmore for certain posts to give extra contexts/what I remember being relevant to the piece I post.
Now the hard part is figuring out where to start! What would y'all like to see first?

Visited the trailer for The All-Devouring Whale on YouTube and omg...I have found my people...
Tumblr media
I try not to be bitter about it, but Crunchyroll has treated every donghua it gets terribly when it comes to promoting the Chinese language versions:
Crunchyroll got All Saints Street but because of I guess Aniplex doing the dub, they only promoted the Japanese version
The English side of Crunchyroll didn’t promote X&Y at all; only Crunchyroll Brazil did
Crunchyroll only promoted the Japanese dub of Fox Spirit Matchmaker
Crunchyroll absorbed Funimation but has never promoted the donghua from the Bilibili-Funimation collab (which included Lie Huo Jiao Chou and Can Ci Pin)
Crunchyroll prefers promoting its own English dubs of donghua over the Chinese versions
The only donghua I’ve ever seen promoted in Chinese on Crunchyroll is Link Click and TGCF, and that was already pretty rare (there is one main Link Click clip in Chinese that I know of)
In the early days, Link Click’s default language when you chose it on Crunchyroll was the Japanese dub
In the early days, even if you changed Link Click’s language to Chinese, the OP would be the dubbed over Japanese version
A lot of pirating sites labelled the Chinese audio of Link Click as a dub after the Japanese dub was released, without labelling the Japanese dub as anything which implied it was the original, and I wonder if Crunchyroll had something to do with that
Crunchyroll has only promoted the Japanese dub of Dragon Raja
Crunchyroll has only promoted the Japanese dub of Pause! Let Me Check the Walkthrough First
Crunchyroll only offers the Japanese dub for Lee’s Detective Agency
Crunchyroll has never promoted Another Journey to the West despite having it in its line-up
I was so disillusioned by how Crunchyroll treats donghua when they licensed The Notorious Herbivorous Dragon I assumed it was only licensed because it was a Japanese and Chinese collab so Crunchyroll could promote the Japanese side of it lmfao
Crunchyroll released a Blu-Ray version of Tian Guan Ci Fu recently but only offered Japanese or English as dub options
I honestly miss Funimation... When they did the Bilibili collab, they were explicit about it being a collab with Bilibili.
I want to support donghua but yeah I’d rather support them on their Chinese sites than ever give Crunchyroll money at this rate, even though I do want donghua to get more international attention. 😔
Anyway, here’s the trailer for The All-Devouring Whale because I've been quite excited for it and it even went viral on Twitter recently!:

Last night I watched a movie on Netflix called Blood Red Sky and it's about a woman and her son travelling from Germany to New York to get treatment for her vampirism but the plane gets hijacked by terrorists. I really really liked it c: it's one that I want to own but since it's a Netflix original I can't :/ anyway the vampire design was really cool, I liked the pink eyes especially. I think most of it was real? Cgi was used at times but I think it was mostly prosthetics??? Oh and! I was suspicious at first because Netflix originals are usually pretty explicit but this one wasn't, there were a few swears here and there but no boobies. And the bad words didn't feel forced and their use made sense I guess? Like, if I was on a plane with terrorists and vampires I probably wouldn't be saying "ah, butts" or "oh my land". If you watch it and you don't mind subtitles I recommend watching it with the original audio. German, English, and Arabic are all used in this movie and it makes sense and listening to it dubbed I feel would ruin it a little bit

Digimon Adventure 01x12 - Adventure! Patamon and I / DigiBaby Boom
Previously on Digimon Adventure: Jou conquered the Lord of Halloween by doing homework at him while Sora questioned the life choices that brought them both to this point.
Six kids are now on their way back to Infinity Mountain. That leaves only one, all on his own with no one but his Partner to help him.
Tumblr media
We open on Takeru's bed crashing into the ocean near one of the island shards. While Patamon rescues Takeru from the crash, we cut over to Devimon.
Last episode I brought up that the dub seems to think these episodes are happening sequentially rather than simultaneously. Here we see why, as the original offers a scene that makes absolutely no sense in context: Devimon tearing into Ogremon and Leomon for their failures.
(With Ogremon, it could be assumed that this is after he rowed himself back to Infinity Mountain from the crate. But it was unquestionably Day 6 in broad daylight when Leomon attacked Mimi and Koushiro. There's no way for Devimon to now be yelling at Leomon over it on the night of Day 5.
It was the original anime that screwed up the timescale, so the dub is absolved of that. They learned it from watching you, senpai.)
Tumblr media
Leomon and Ogremon apologize for their failures - in advance, in Leomon's case. Devimon picks up Ogremon by his throat. Ogremon pleads for forgiveness, and then Devimon drops him.
(I like how he targets Ogremon alone. He's like, "Leomon's a zombie; I only expect so much from him. You actually work here.")
In the original, just before he drops Ogremon, we get this exchange.
Ogremon: W-What are you doing sir!? Devimon: I don't want to hear your excuses! Ogremon: Forgive me, Devimon-sama! Please forgive me! Devimon: ... (cruel grin, then drops Ogremon) Ogremon: (pained) ...thank you.
The dub punches it up with an oldie but a goodie.
Ogremon: No, wait! I can explain! Devimon: Spare me your pathetic excuses! Ogremon: Yes, master! Please! Please, just put me down! Devimon: ... (cruel grin, then drops Ogremon) Ogremon: (pained) Thank you, master....
Classic. I would have gone with "let me go" but "put me down" still works.
Tumblr media
Back on the island shard, Patamon carries Takeru safely to shore. Takeru gets dressed, but then starts to cry as he realizes the severity of his situation.
Patamon: What's wrong, Takeru!? Takeru: W-We got separated from Onii-chan and the others! (bawling)
The dub needs to fit in a commercial break here, so they play the footage of Takeru starting to cry twice - Once before and once after the commercials. For the before version, he delivers a parting quip.
T.K.: Look at all that water! Somebody must have let the bathtub overflow! I just hope it didn't wash out our way of finding the others!
He's facing away from the camera so they can disguise him breaking down. You can still see his head shaking from the sobs if you know what you're looking for, but it's easy to overlook.
Then, upon return from the commercial, the footage repeats but T.K. starts crying in earnest.
T.K.: D-D-Don't worry about me, Patamon! I'm not scared of being separated from the others! And being lost and being homesick and... (bawling)
Tumblr media
While Takeru's crying, Patamon looks up the waterfall and thinks about what Piyomon would do if she were here. He plays through her Birdramon evolution stock footage, but with Patamon's actor reciting "Piyomon SHINKAAAAAA!!! Birdramon!" followed by an imaginary shot of Birdramon flying up and above the waterfall.
Sadly, the dub does not follow suit. They use the standard audio clip of Biyomon's Digivolution.
It's at this point that Patamon begins crying as hard as Takeru is. Hard enough to surprise Takeru and shake him out of it.
Patamon: But why... Why can't I evolve? (bawling) Takeru: ...what's wrong, Patamon? Patamon: Why!? Why!? I want to evolve and fly high in the sky too! Takeru: Evolve? What kind of Digimon do you evolve into, anyway? Patamon: What kind? I won't know until I evolve into it. Do you know, Takeru?
The dub matches this dialogue almost verbatim, adding in some quips.
Patamon: I want to fly high in the sky too but somehow I can't seem to Digivolve! (bawling) T.K.: ...hey.... Patamon: I wanna fly too! I wanna Digivolve! T.K.: To what? Patamon: Huh? T.K.: I mean what will you Digivolve into? Didn't they tell you at Digimon School or something? Patamon: Oh. Well, I won't actually know until I do Digivolve and find out what I am. T.K.: Wow! So it's a mystery!
I like the addition of "Digimon School". XD That feels like something a kid Takeru's age would say.
From there, Takeru provides rundowns of his own ideas for what Patamon's evolution might be.
Tumblr media
This is TabunKonnamon, an Adult-stage Imaginary-type Digimon. His name, though spelled phonetically in katakana like most Digimon names, is a homophone for "Tabun Konna", meaning "Perhaps something like this". Takeru fills in for the Narrator to give us his rundown.
Takeru: TabunKonnamon. Its special attack is Buubuu Attack! Buu!
"Buubuu" being the Japanese term for oinking.
The dub calls it Porkymon.
T.K.: Porkymon! With super-strong oink attack and the power to... um... oink!
Patamon is not impressed. That's okay. Takeru has other ideas.
Tumblr media
This is KittoKonnamon, an Adult-stage Imaginary-type Digimon. Its name is a homophone for "Kitto konna", meaning "Certainly something like this". Takeru's pretty sure he's got this figured out now.
Takeru: KittoKonnamon. Its special attack is Hippopota VACUUUUUUM!!!
As he explains this, KittoKonnamon demonstrates its Hippopota Vacuum by snorting the entire intro blurb up into its nostrils. What a powerful attack!
T.K.: Hogmon! Super hog smell and the power to snort up enemies in a single sniff like this!
T.K. doesn't give its attack a name, but he does add that it has a super hog smell. That's a powerful defensive ability that shouldn't be forgotten.
Patamon's even less impressed by this one.
Patamon: NO WAY! Takeru: Then-- Patamon: Forget it! Stop thinking about it! It doesn't matter. I just won't evolve ever!
Takeru rolled a nat 1 on that diplomacy check.
Over in the dub, they pay off the different naming theme they used for these two forms, picking up on the noticeable similarity between them.
Patamon: I am not a pig, T.K.! T.K.: It's okay to be a pig. Patamon: I'm sure it is, especially for pigs, but that's not me!
Nobody tell Patamon but I'm pretty sure he's a guinea pig. T.K. was right. Justice for T.K.
Tumblr media
Alone on this shard of File Island, Takeru and Patamon come across a train crossing, which forces them to stop and wait.
For a solid fifteen seconds, the only sounds are the ringing of the crossing's bell and the wind rustling through the grass. No train ever goes by, and eventually the crossing stops ringing and raises its gates.
(A chilling metaphor for the menacing isolation these boys are experiencing. A vast, empty crossroads stretches out before them.)
In a somber moment, devoid of music or sound beyond their tiny voices, the boys quietly discuss where to go from here.
Takeru: Where should we go? Patamon: Anywhere. I'll follow you wherever you choose, Takeru. Takeru: Then... This way. Patamon: Okay.
Bit of a tonal whiplash there right after the whole ProbablyThismon bit. "Hahaha, we like to have fun here. Anyways, doom." But again, that fits the scenario of a child this young being stranded like this. Takeru is 8.
Over in the dub, they add the sound of a train rumbling through to this scene and use those fifteen seconds to let T.K. talk over it.
T.K.: Hey! I hear a train coming! I bet you we can jump on and ride the caboose all the way back to summer camp!
They also play sad music to break up the silence. Then, as the train (that is somehow making train noises) fails to materialize, the boys discuss.
Patamon: I think I felt something! T.K.: Um, maybe it's an invisible train. Patamon: Did a train go by? T.K.: If it did, it's the most silent-est, most invisible-est train ever! Now come on, let's go. Patamon: Go where? T.K.: Not sure. But I guess we'll know when we get there.
I wouldn't call it that silent, T.K. We clearly heard both its horn blowing and the sound of it rustling on the tracks.
This scene is a major victim of that common trend in anime localization of its day: Localizers were reluctant to let a quiet scene sit for fear that the kids watching will get bored and change the channel. Nonetheless, though the original is far superior, I do appreciate that they still try to capture the somber tone of the scene's intent at the end there.
Then they find the happiest place on File Island.
Tumblr media
Takeru: It's so pretty. Patamon: Yeah. Let's go look inside! Takeru: Okay!
Seizing on a perfect opportunity to insert some gags, the dub spices this exchange up.
T.K.: WOW! Let's find a snack bar and get some cotton candy! Places like this always have cotton candy. Patamon: They make candy from cotton!? T.K.: Ooh, I bet there's popcorn and snow cones and soft pretzels and ice cream and candy! Patamon: Oh boy! Let's go see! T.K.: Last one there is a rotten egg!
At a certain point this devolves into just listing American cultural stuff 'cause we're American now, but I love Patamon's confused response to cotton candy. That's exactly the kind of culture shock gag that even the original's been peppering throughout the File Island arc. It fits in perfectly with bits like "Is a snowball fight edible?"
It takes no time at all for them to discover that the ground is bouncy and soft, good for both playtime and naptime. They bounce and they play and then they stop and rest, enjoying the calmness and joy of this place.
Exploring further, they come across a whole field of baby cradles. Inside are Baby-stage Digimon. Takeru immediately starts poking infants.
Tumblr media
Of note: These aren't Baby-stage like Koromon or Mochimon or Tanemon. Baby-stage, oddly, comes in two stages? Baby I and Baby II. Those were Baby II, while this Botamon here is Baby I. It will need to evolve once before it can become a Koromon, or possibly something else because Digimon have branching evolution paths.
Tumblr media
Speaking of eggs, the boys explore further and discover a field of Digitama. It's a conjunction of the English "Digital" and a phonetic homophone for the first two syllables of "tamago", which means "egg". Tamago often gets shortened to "tama".
The dub calls it a Digi-Egg, which is an accurate literal translation. Speaking of accurate translations:
Takeru: Digitama? Patamon: A Digimon egg. Takeru: Oh, so Digimon are born from eggs? Like chickens? Patamon: Yep, that's right. Takeru: Even Devimon? Patamon: Yeah...
This exchange comes through completely faithfully in the dub, with the only change being T.K. mentioning, "I like the pretty paint," referring to the Digi-Egg's color scheme.
Patamon finds an envelope on the ground with a note inside, which simply reads "Rub me".
Hilariously, in the Unimon episode, Jou left a note for the others before climbing Infinity Mountain telling them to wait for him. The note's written in the sand in Japanese lettering, of course, but the localizers edited it to be English instead.
With the "Rub me" note, they didn't even bother. The note in its original katakana is displayed in the dub, but Patamon explains that it's "written in Digi-code". Oh boy, the Americans are pretending that real languages are fantasy things they made up again!
(Maybe that's a little harsh but Disney scarred me by subtitling Xhosa words as "speaking Wakandan" and now I'm sensitive about it.)
Takeru decides the note must be referring to the Digitama themselves, and so rubs the one in his hands.
Tumblr media
Sure enough, rubbing it makes it hatch into a newborn Poyomon, the Baby I stage of Patamon. They need a crib for Poyomon, so Patamon prepares to go look. Suddenly, the unbroken parts of the Digitama transform into the crib, solving that problem.
Patamon: Oh, so that's how it works. Takeru: You didn't know about this? But you're a Digimon. Patamon: I don't remember being a baby. Do you, Takeru?
Takeru stops to think about that question, and we flash back on his earliest memory.
Tumblr media
We see a much younger Takeru playing with blocks, punctuated only by the sound of Yamato's harmonica. Suddenly, he accidentally falls and knocks over the little houses and stuff he's built.
The harmonica cuts out, with Yamato realizing what's happened a moment before Takeru starts to cry. Yamato makes his way over, picking up and embracing his brother with a smile. He says something, but we don't hear his words; We only see the love on his face.
As with the train scene, the dub talks over this with dialogue to avoid letting a quiet moment stand.
T.K.: Well, these pretty shapes and colors do remind me of something from a long time ago. It was real sunny; I was playing with blocks but I fell over or something! And I remember I was crying. But there was someone there with me. Someone... I don't know exactly who. Maybe my brother Matt! Anyway, somebody picked me up and I stopped crying. Matt: Attaboy!
...attaboy? Of all the possible things he could have been saying there, you picked attaboy? Okay.
T.K.'s dialogue drowns out Matt's harmonica, and music keeps playing even after Matt stops. As a result, the effect of Yamato's music swiftly cutting to silence is lost.
Back in the present, Takeru admits that Patamon's right; He doesn't remember infancy either. With that settled, the boys race off to go rub some more Digitama.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, we're introduced attack-first to a new Digimon: Elecmon, using his Sparkling Thunder to catch fish from a stream.
Elecmon is a Child-stage Data-type Mammal Digimon.
(The subs I'm watching misidentify him as Adult-stage, incidentally.
Tumblr media
It says "Adult" up there in the English translation. However, the kanji onscreen in his data block clearly spell out 成長期 which is Child-stage, as opposed to 成熟期 which is Adult-stage. Everyone makes mistakes; Can't always trust the subs.)
Narrator: Elecmon. A very inquisitive mammal Digimon who enjoys pulling pranks. He threatens his enemies by spreading his tail like a peacock.
Over in the dub, they call his attack Super Thunderstrike. He's forced to handle his own diegetic rundown, for lack of other characters nearby to do it.
Elecmon: I am Elecmon, caretaker of baby Digimon. Don't cross wires with me!
Elecmon zaps the stream with his Sparkling Thunder, frying countless fish. Then he picks out a spot and lets the water carry his catch right to him, plucking them out as they come. Pleased with himself, he announces that this will be plenty to feed all those little baby mouths.
Tumblr media
Back at the nursery, Takeru and Patamon are running themselves ragged trying to take care of these babies. Many of the babies have started crying and they can't figure out why. Patamon's doing everything he can to cheer them up, while Takeru notices that one of them defecated.
Meanwhile, caretaker Elecmon is on his way back to the nursery with a net full of fish when he happens to hear the babies crying. Leaving his catch behind, he races to the nursery to find two things: A bunch of crying babies and two newcomers he's never seen before.
Tumblr media
Naturally, he makes some assumptions.
Before Takeru and Patamon even know what's happening, Elecmon races in and lets off a Sparkling Thunder.
Tumblr media
Patamon shoves Takeru out of the way of the bolt, then furiously whirls on Elecmon.
Patamon: WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!? THAT'S DANGEROUS!!! Elecmon: Of course it is! I was aiming at you! Patamon: WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!? Elecmon: Because you were kawaigaru (adoring) my babies! Takeru: Well, we did kawaigaru them, but what's wrong with that? Elecmon: Tsk tsk tsk. Your ignorance is troublesome. Listen, the word "kawaigaru" not only means to "be affectionate to" someone, but it can also mean to "abuse" them as well! Patamon: But those both mean completely different things! That's weird! Besides, we weren't abusing them; Just looking after them. Elecmon: Well, nobody asked you to look after the babies in the first place! Patamon: You tell us off but what are you to these babies anyway!? Elecmon: What am I? I'm their guardian, their housekeeper, their food provider-- Wait, who cares about that, you brat! Patamon: YOU'RE A BRAT TOO!!! Elecmon: Oh, NOW I'M MAD!!!
Poor Takeru. This is his first encounter with words that ironically mean the opposite of their definition when used in common parlance. I guess you could say he's literally been taken to school!
The subtitle up there tries to make this work with "coddle", but there simply is no English equivalent for the precise linguistic usages of kawaigaru driving this exchange.
Elecmon is accusing Patamon and Takeru of being the reason the babies were crying. That's the point here. He thinks they were doing something to hurt the babies.
Obviously, the dub didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of accurately translating the kawaigaru discourse. So they had to go their own way with it.
T.K.: Hey, watch where you're aiming that thing! You could hurt somebody! Elecmon: Of course I could have. That's what I was trying to do! Patamon: But why would you want to do anything to hurt us? Elecmon: Because I saw you playing with my babies, you interlopers! T.K.: Sure, we played with them. But what's that got to do with you? Elecmon: Ah ah ah ah. You barbarians. Always making the same mistake! I'm not some ordinary Digimon who just happened to come along and catch you. This is the Primary Village Hatchling Ground and Nursery. A very special place where all Digimon start their lives! And I am a very special Digimon entrusted with caring for each and every one of them! Patamon: Well, you don't have to play Mr. Bigshot and fry us! Elecmon: I was only trying to protect my babies. Now, I think this conversation has lasted long enough. I am in charge and you two are trespassing. You must leave! Patamon: Now, now. Don't get all puffy! Elecmon: DON'T CALL ME PUFFY!!!
To fill the space where the impossible-to-adapt kawaigaru discussion would go, Elecmon instead monologues about the importance of the nursery, which the dub names Primary Village.
A consequence of taking this long walk around the untranslatable discourse is that Dub Elecmon, despite being less aggressive in tone, is more unreasonable in accusation. The original altercation was a misunderstanding because he thought the boys were harassing the babies; Here, he thinks they were playing. He's being territorial by attacking.
However, he will start acting territorial shortly, so that's a valid way to play him here.
Tumblr media
Patamon and Elecmon lunge for each other, both giving as good as they get. Elecmon reveals that he can electrocute anything that touches him, but then only does it the once so Patamon can keep fighting back.
While they brawl, Takeru screams at them to stop, getting increasingly agitated. We keep cutting back to his Digivice; The meter steadily filling up.
Tumblr media
He doesn't know what that means but we do. Something about this angry fistfight is pushing Patamon towards the brink of evolution.
In the dub, T.K. does notice this. He remarks "This is very bad! He's Digivolving!" He also observes, "They're fighting worse than Matt and me, and they aren't even brothers...."
Finally, Takeru lets out one last, furious scream at them to stop. Everything seems to freeze just for the moment. And the meter on his Digivice slowly drains.
Tumblr media
Takeru reads them both the riot act for the way they're behaving. They're scaring the babies.
This gets to them both, and they separate. Patamon picks up a nearby Poyomon to console them.
Patamon: Sorry for scaring you. Elecmon: Hey, don't start acting familiar with my babies, you brat! Patamon: Hey, did you guys know that the ones who think they're grown-ups are actually the biggest brats of all. Isn't that dumb? Elecmon: What!? If you've got a problem, say it to my face! You're the type to put on a nice face but then talk about people behind their backs, aren't you!? Patamon: Takeru, let me at him! I want to settle things with this guy! Elecmon: So do I! Bring it!
Even after separating, Patamon and Elecmon are chomping at the bit to resume fighting each other. Over what, at this point, is basically nothing anymore. A bad first impression has their blood boiling.
If they must fight, then Takeru insists on doing it the right way.
Tumblr media
A tug-of-war hilariously styled as if it were a sumo match. Right down to the sounds of the hyoshigi clacking for those iconic high-pitched tones, and with Takeru playing the role of yobidashi and introducing the wrestlers by song.
(Fun fact, there is presently a popular yobidashi named Takeru. It's not a reference, though; He hadn't even been born yet when this aired.)
Takeru: ~From the East / Elec of the Vast Sea / Elec of the Vast Sea! / From the West / Pata of the Large Mountain / Pata of the Large Mountain!
Naturally, the dub plays this like a pro wrestling announcer.
T.K.: AND NOW!!! In that corner: The defending champion ELECMON!!! AND NOW!!! Over in the other corner: The challenger and most excellent Digimon, PATAMON!!!
Nice cultural transition.
In a moment of supreme humiliation, Patamon wins.
Tumblr media
Not only outmuscling Elecmon but flinging him across the nursery. Pata of the Mountain wins!
Conceding defeat, Elecmon formally accepts Patamon and welcomes him to the nursery. He also gives us its Japanese name: Hajimari no Machi, which means "Village of Beginnings".
Tumblr media
Explaining his behavior, Elecmon says:
Elecmon: I'm sorry about all that. Weird things have been happening around here. On top of that, the island breaking apart... It made me paranoid of outsiders. Well! Guess this all goes to show I'm still too much of a brat! Takeru: Fighting between friends is okay because you'll make up soon. ...but when adults fight.... Elecmon: You're stronger than you look! Patamon: Than I look? I don't like being judged by the size of my appearance. Elecmon: Heh, my bad. But it's like they say... Uh, how's it go? 'Sansho wa kotsubu de (Sansho pepper is tiny) but it's sharp on the tongue.' Or something like that. Patamon: 'Sanshikisumire (Pansies) are sharp on the tongue'? Have you eaten pansies before!? Elecmon: ...huh? Did I screw that up?
Takeru suddenly went into PTSD flashbacks about his parents' divorce and we're over here doing more wordplay. Welcome to kindergarten.
Over in the dub, we have:
Elecmon: I'm really sorry, Patamon. There's no good excuse for the mean way I acted when I first saw you, but I've been so upset about things around here. Ever since the island broke apart, I've been expected a fight. I guess I just took it out on you. I apologize. T.K.: At least kids make up pretty fast. My parents are still mad at me for the time I painted our kitty cat. Elecmon: You know, you're a lot stronger than you look, kid! I'm impressed! Patamon: You know, they say you can't tell a cover by the size of its book or something like that. Elecmon: Sure. Well, forget about the sayings; You're great at tug-of-war! Hey, take a look around. Some day all of this will be yours, Patamon my boy. You'll raise up some fine young Digimon here, just like your old man-- Patamon: Elecmon, I am not here to raise babies! Elecmon: You're not? Oh, I mean, of course you're not! I was just... Well, I guess I was just daydreaming!
Props for at least trying to do a linguistic joke here. It's a lot shorter, though, so they have to add in this Lion King bit for the runtime.
Biggest change is, of course, T.K.'s line. Instead of a somber reference to his parents' divorce, it's replaced with a laugh line about his parents being mad at him. I don't remember if parental divorce was on the list of Cartoon No-Nos but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. They did earlier change Matt and T.K. being brothers split by divorce to being half-brothers, so this change feels consistent with that.
With that settled, Takeru has a question for Elecmon: How do we get to Infinity Mountain?
Tumblr media
Elecmon: You want to climb that mountain!? I really suggest you don't! Devimon is over there! Takeru: I know! I have to go ask him where my brother and the others are. Elecmon: He's not just gonna tell you. After all, he's an evil Digimon. If you really want to know, you'll have no choice but to defeat him. Takeru: I don't want to fight! Elecmon: Even if you don't.... Patamon: Maybe there's another way. Some way we can settle things without fighting. Elecmon: If there was-- Takeru: Think back to what you felt a moment ago. We were all laughing together, remember? I think something will happen when our hearts come together.
Elecmon takes inspiration from this talk, settling on a new plan of action.
Elecmon: I'll be away a bit in Gear Savannah! You passed through the Pyocomon Village there, right? I'm going to tell them what happened here! Maybe if we can bring our hearts together, the island will join back together again in one piece! Patamon: Then the island will be back to normal! Elecmon: It's just a feeling, but it's what I want to believe.
Tumblr media
As Day 6 comes to a close, we return to Devimon, watching through a magic observation gear as six of seven children make their way back towards Infinity Mountain. Dub T.K. fills this space with narration.
T.K.: Maybe [Elecmon] can help us. And maybe I'll get back together with my brother. I just know Matt's out there somewhere. I can almost see him! But I've got this yucky feeling that a lot's going to happen between now and then!
That yucky feeling is called "having read the script for the next episode during the localization process". :P
Backed into a corner, Devimon plots to kill Takeru and Patamon.
Devimon: I didn't expect it to go this way. I was unable to put a stop to them before they evolved, but no matter. I only need to kill the one Digimon who has yet to evolve. As long as I kill one Chosen Child, my victory is ensured. Leomon! Leomon: Sir! Devimon: I leave this to you. Leomon: Understood. Ogremon: Whaddya-- I mean, what shall I do? Devimon: Nothing, for now. But the final battle isn't far off; It wouldn't hurt to stack the odds in our favor. Ogremon: Yes, sir! I'll strangle the life out of them this time!
Tumblr media
As we move away from Devimon, the narrator takes over.
Narrator: As the time drew near, the destiny of File Island-- No, of the entire Digimon World was put at stake as justice and evil, light and dark, surged towards each other. Yes, it wouldn't be long before the fight between these two sides would commence.
As he says this, several white feathers suddenly float up onscreen and rushes towards the camera. Completely with an audible shing to make sure you notice them.
(Spoilers, geeze.)
Over in the dub, Devimon is chewing the scenery per usual.
Devimon: All but one of their Digimon have Digivolved. I must destroy this last one before it is too late. Urgh, I cannot believe it has come to this. Still, as long as even one of those cursed children is lost, I am pleased. Leomon! Leomon: Master. Devimon: I leave this to you. Leomon: As you wish, my lord. Ogremon: What shall I do, Master? What task do you have for me? Devimon: Nothing for the moment, my loyal servant. But soon a battle will rage and you must be prepared! Ogremon: I understand, my lord! This time, I will not fail you! Devimon: Heheheheh.... No, this time there will be no failure! This time I SHALL BE VICTORIOUS!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
It hits pretty much every point from the original beat-for-beat. I wouldn't bother bringing it up except for one thing: Devimon's last line extends beyond the end of his scene and into the narrator's, replacing the narration.
This means there's nothing to call out the foreshadowing of the white feathers. They come and go with little fanfare, though they do still have this sort of mystical wooshing sound applied as they pass by. It's not nearly as noticeable as the shing though.
Tumblr media
Back in the Village of Beginnings, a Botamon in Takeru's lap suddenly evolves into Koromon. While everyone celebrates the new Koromon, Patamon revisits his anxieties from earlier in the episode, but now from the opposite perspective.
Patamon: I'm also going to evolve one day. I don't mind, but... Will I be able to stay friends with Takeru after I evolve? Takeru: Hm? What's wrong? Patamon: Oh! Nothing.... Takeru: Do you want to evolve too? Patamon: No! Not at all! I'm fine staying like this. I'll stay in this form forever, right by your side, Takeru. Takeru: Yeah! It's a promise. We'll be friends forever!
Dub Patamon has a much harder time putting his thoughts into words.
Patamon: Remember, I'm your Digimon, T.K. and some day I'll Digivolve too! T.K.: Huh? Why? Is that bad? Patamon: No! But.... T.K.: You wanna Digivolve? Is that what you're saying? Patamon: I'm just saying it might happen, but I don't really want it to. I wanna stay like this forever, always by your side! T.K.: Mmhmm! That's so awesome. We can be best friends forever and ever.
First he's like "Don't forget I'm gonna Digivolve!" and then suddenly it's "I don't wanna Digivolve!" Getting your wires crossed here, Patamon.
Also, "That's so awesome," is a way shittier response than "It's a promise!" If I told someone I liked being their friend and they replied, "Uh-huh, that's awesome," I'd feel super rejected.
We close on another white feather whisking by, assuring us that everything's gonna be alright.
Tumblr media
It's all gonna be just fine.
Assessment: As the youngest youngest of this group, Takeru is defined by his innocence and his optimistic heart. This is his first spotlight episode since, as noted, he didn't get an evolution episode in the first set. Watching him navigate this situation with Elecmon makes for a solid contrast against what Yamato's been saying: That Takeru is incapable of doing things on his own.
He's young and naive, but he isn't helpless. We see that here, as he's forced to act independently for the first time in the series.
The dub of this one is a little rough in spots, especially when filling in dialogue for quiet scenes that drew their effectiveness from the reserved and careful use of audio. As with the previous episode, there's also places where the dub was screwed from the get-go, such as the two scenes that directly involve Japanese linguistics, but they did a decent job going their own way on those.
Overall, I'd call this dub an improvement over the previous episode, to be sure. Despite some jank in places, they did their best to stay on-script as much as possible and match the tone of the original, while also adding onto it in certain areas.

I made a spreadsheet with every voice file and their line listed (transcribed via soundboard playing them into Google translate or using a romaji to hiragana converter), and have been taking those lines and running them through different translation sites. Google Translate is one of them as mentioned before but, DeepL has especially been used in the process. Along with that, I've found myself opening Jisho to double check translations when unclear.
Though, as I don't fully know what moves these correspond to until in-game, they do result in some awkward 'two-parter' moves.
Direction
This has been the easiest part as I'm just able to listen to the tone of the original line and reference it for my own delivery. With Nanaya, I've tried to give him that somewhat deep voice like heard in his japanese counterpart, though didn't quite follow through for all lines (which I'll try to go through and fix). Though, it's a little weird going into that range, despite it being right in my natural tone.
Recording + Effect Chain
I use a SM57 routed into a Scarlett which I don't seem to remember the model name for. I'm recording into Audacity with the Scarlett dial at 3 o'clock, then I run my audio through a macro that does as follows: Loudness Normalization (Perceived Loudness, -19 LUFs), Noise Reduction (depends on your setup).
The audio files once all recorded are all imported into FL Studio and ran through a channel with the Fruity Multiband Compressor preset 'Vocal' with minor adjustments to the gain dials (especially the high to emulate the crunch). I'd probably turn the channel up to where it's in-between it's max & default position.
Exporting & Naming
This part is the one that sucked the most. Be sure to make sure all the FL tracks are the same name as the project, which can be done easily by double clicking on that bar inbetween the track name and audio, and right clicking on any track, clicking on "Auto name."
Tumblr media
From there, export all playlist tracks into a folder. Now, here's the issue that made me avoid using FL for this type of stuff.
Tumblr media
ALL THE FILES HAVE THE PROJECT NAME AT THE START!!!
Chillax, go open Powershell and put in as follows:
Tumblr media
"C:\...." is the directory where your exported audio is, cd stands for change directory. This is so Powershell is only looking there. The end string is long so here's it in copyable text.
Get-ChildItem *.* | Rename-Item -NewName {$_.Name -replace "StringtoReplace", "newString"}
In this case, the Stringtoreplace is "nanaya voice - ", and the newString is "".
Importing
First thing I learnt when I started this was that "0005.p" in Melty's directory is where audio files are stored, and that if you exported it's contents using ghmr93 (found on the Mizuumi wiki page for MBAACC, in the links section called "File Extractor") and moved replaced the original "0005.p" with the newly extracted "se" folder, the game would run it's audio from the se folder.
Simply replace the specific character audio in battle_se with your new audio under the same file names.
And that's just about all for this post, as it's 1:42am as I'm writing this part of the text. Oh and I accidentally deleted the Tohno win quotes ...and will have to rerecord them, though I did plan to just straight up redo them all anyways, so.

Tezuka Productions just started to post the 60s Astro Boy on YouTube for limited time buuuuuut I think is only available in Japan 🙄
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time for me to rant, sorry not sorry.
I find very odd how stingy they are with Astro Boy, and only with Astro Boy in general.
Is the only one that is a real pain to find subs and HQ episodes that is not in a weird site or you need good contacts inside of the fandom to get a link to watch it.
Any other Tezuka anime is really easy to find, or is on YouTube or on Internet Archive, even Black Jack has basically everything on YouTube and they don't give a flying fuck about it for some reason.
And also I can watch Black Jack on their japanese Youtube channel but not Astro Boy, because ??????
I just wish they were not stingy with old anime and we could watch it legally with options of dub and subs for who wants it.
I personally really dislike English dub things in general (not original audio just to be clear) I think is pretty bad and on Tezuka Productions English YouTube most of the time they only give you options of dub versions which is bad so unfortunately I go look for a sub it somewhere else or PT-BR dub when is dubbed of course.
And even if is dubbed on my language sometimes the dub is so old that is really hard to even understand what their are saying so I give up and I just go watch a sub version instead.
Like, is not difficult to hire someone to make proper subbtitles fr.
I think they removed that option of the community to add subtitles because we cannot have good things.
I just wish I knew fluent japanese because I would be like:
No one wants to translate this old ass anime I like?
Tumblr media
Anyways, long story short: GIVE US LEGAL OPTIONS!
Again, sorry not sorry for the ranting, this just makes me mad.

I still idly toss around the idea of making an audio version of LC sometimes. (I actually did record the first few chapters, though I never posted it anywhere.)
Odds are it'd just be me reading for every character, which is scary in its own right. I dread the idea of voicing Kuwabara. But if it were a full-scale, actor-for-every-character kind of deal, it'd be interesting to cast the original characters and see them come to life.
I consider Not Quite Keiko herself to be one of those characters, which might surprise some people who would expect me to voice her. I think it'd be cool if someone else (perhaps someone with a good impression of the dub actress) could voice her spoken lines of dialogue, and then I'd voice the narration/internal monologue that makes up the bulk of the story. That dichotomy of voices would be an interesting way to drive home that NQK's inner self doesn't match their physical appearance.
Though now that I'm thinking about it, there's something arguably more interesting I could do if I voiced her dialogue AND the narration. If I used some kind of character voice for the dialogue that's distinct from my natural speaking voice, and if I used my natural speaking voice for the narration, I could slowly blend the two together over the course of the story. Show via the voices that the inner self and outer self are slowly merging, or at least that the character is losing some of that internal boundary between their sense of self and the character they play. Would take a fair bit of acting and careful planning on my part, but...
Anyway. Just idle thoughts. It's fun to think about!

Hmm okay, replaying the DE version of Tales of Vesperia, for the first time with JP audio.
And I'd been told that Yuri is a different character in the dub, and I'd seen some of the translation differences and I believed it. But holy smokes, I didn't actually understand how dirty his character was done until actually playing it.
I enjoyed Troy Baker's Yuri, and I'd played that game so much when it came out I swear I remember how almost every line was delivered. But again, entirely different character.
I want to say that the dub version tried to match Yuri's personality with his colour scheme more than anything? Like his personality in the JP audio feels almost at odds with his design now. I'm not saying he's a ray of sunshine, but he's generally light hearted outwardly and to me that adds so much more depth and interest to his character especially considering what he does later on. The dub takes all that potential of inner turmoil and drama and puts it right out front where it's visible and boring, without ever setting up and potential conflictions for later. For the dub Yuri I look at him and say yeah, this guy would probably murder someone and feel bad about it. He's gonna brood and be moody because that's him.
But when that stuff will happen with the original version of the character, oh man it'll be an entirely different beast.
Anyway I'm totally normal about this game and this character.
Also how can you take this man:
Tumblr media
And say he's Mr. McBroodySnarkPants and NOT the funkiest, queerest and most fabulous vigilante that ever existed?

Finally watching 100yq episode 1 in English dub. T_T I love it so much. Nearly the entire cast is back! I watch plenty of things in original Japanese audio, but for Fairy Tail, I fell in love with it in English & watched the entire thing in Eng Dub.
So...that being said, I think I will stick with being two weeks behind to watch the dub instead. GIFs will follow accordingly. (Which may be better to avoid spoilers, anyway!)

Love & Deepspace Caleb storyline thoughts:
Holy shit so much to get through. Main story updates, free myth chapters, new cards, man.
Yandere is typically not my jam at allllll, but similar to what they did with Sylus, they've taken the standard trope and really expanded on it and made it quite interesting here. I'm really quite impressed with this game. I haven't played a lot of recent otome games, I admit. The ones I used to play were very old, very simple, very expensive, and pretty poorly written. It's so crazy to me to go from that to everything they're doing here.
I guess that's why I get so incredibly salty about people whining about what content they feel should be in the game, and especially the folks absolutely losing their shit over baby's first yandere, even to the point where it was making me upset - like, all these young kids with these incredibly conservative talking points who don't even realize it, because they use therapyspeak to make it sound woke(tm) - but... when I think back, it really is nothing new at all I guess. People go insane when presented with moral ambiguity and dark topics. Shit, some people can't even get their brains around goddamned children's cartoons. It gives me flashbacks to the reylo antis who told us we were degenerates for enjoying an enemies-to-lovers trope, gives me flashbacks to all the nasty Steven Universe discourse. I just wish they weren't so goddamned loud, I guess. I try to look around in the tags cause I want to see fans sharing thoughts, and I see some of the stalest discourse. If you don't like something, great, awesome, I do not give a shit. But no one cares about or wants to hear your moral judgement.
One last thought - I have seen an awful lot of discussion about what age groups this game is appropriate for, and some extremely wild things being said. Look, the bottom line is, the age ratings games have in the app stores are not made up on a whim. They are based on rules that outline what types of content will get what rating. If you take issue with how the ratings system that gets applied to ALL GAMES works, that is a totally separate discussion that you are free to begin somewhere else. Why are you clogging up the tags of this game specifically? Go take it up with the app stores.
Anyway, here's some thoughts.
....I'm getting a vibe, and I sincerely hope I'm wrong, that a lot of fans don't understand the symbolism behind apples and why it's Caleb's motif. I mean. It's a biblical reference, representing forbidden knowledge, and original sin. The fact that Caleb's story also has a dude with a... weird snake thing going on could arguably be related as well. Maybe. I... I hope you knew that. It's an extremely classic reference. This is why it's so important to learn, and read, and always be curious, and yes especially about things that are old and dry and boring. It creates this broader, richer appreciation of things, like adding extra colours to a limited colour palette. That one card (that I don’t have yet) that has a clip of the two of them about to bite into the apple together… holy shit.
Ooooof, guys, oof. Usually I try not to be an asshole about the english dub of things, but in this case, because it's AI (yes it is, please see my older post where I went over this in detail) I don't feel quite as bad in saying, ugh. Caleb's english voice. It's so bad, you guys. The voice they picked does an ok job as the teasing older brother in the very first intro chapters, but UFFF is it ever poorly equipped to do the sterner stuff. Please, if you only play the english, do yourself a big big favour and give the japanese audio a try (can't speak for the other languages cause I haven't played them). The japanese VA is great. He's done a lot of voice work as side characters but is Tuxedo Mask in that Sailor Moon Crystal series, so there's that. I've seen lots of people mention that they gave it a try and liked the japanese voice a lot better, please please check it out. Check it out just to prove me wrong! Fuck you, I like the english voice, it’s the best, well great! Listen to the japanese just to be able to tell me how stupid I am, then.
Anyways, because I am playing the japanese audio, I have noticed something that amuses me - the english translation has completely scrubbed every mention that they are adopted siblings. I mean obviously it can't remove the actual plot, but what I mean is, in the japanese audio MC is constantly referring to Caleb as her brother, whereas in the subtitles, it gets changed to "my childhood friend", "that guy", "that man", "he", etc. Caleb also sometimes refers to MC as his younger sister, which gets changed to "she". It is so DESPERATELY trying to understate their relationship. And it's funny, even with this sanitization of the translation, people still get weird about it. We truly are a very fragile culture, aren't we.
(another translation note - during the interrogation, after one of MC's responses, Caleb says "smart move" in english, but in japanese he says "good girl" instead, which I feel the fans would have preferred - odd choice there.
Caleb's story and character are a lot more interesting than I thought they'd be, and kudos to Infold for making a yandere character that I actually understand and even enjoy without my skin crawling. I gave it all an honest shot but it seems Sylus is still my ride-or-die. The monster that's tame ONLY for the main character is so specifically and utterly my jam. But! I support the Caleb girlies. Enjoy!
I am so, SO intrigued by the "coming soon" that remains at the bottom of the character list. Who on EARTH could that be??? There's no one left from the intro chapters who got cinematic animation but no romanceable character yet, and Infold has really covered all the basics now when it comes to what otome game stock characters are left.
I think back to all the old games I played, and really I feel like the only character who is missing is the younger childhood friend, who knew the MC for a long time but was never taken seriously as a viable romantic interest, sometimes because the relationship was so strictly platonic, sometimes because the character never saw the MC again, or sometimes because there is memory loss fuckery. This character is younger than the MC, or at least, younger than all the other guys, and usually their plot involves wanting to be taken seriously and trying to show the MC that they measure up, and (sometimes) make her remember how they knew each other. But I mean. We already have two childhood friends, and we have memory fuckery with every character's story, I don't think there's really any room for this character now.
Some folks have said maybe it would be one of the secondary characters from one of the guy's plots, like Dr Greyson or Thomas or whatever. I DID play a game once where each romance option also had a kind of friend character, and once the main characters were all introduced, they made kind of a special bonus where you could romance those friends if you wanted. The secondary characters in this game ARE suspiciously attractive, so who knows. My gosh though wtf, that would be so many characters in the wish pool. I wouldn't like that. Would it be a separate pool? How many characters does Infold typically add to their games? If it’s a large amount, how do they manage it? Man, I have so many questions.
(it would be neat if it was one of the girl characters - like Jenna - but I don't have any hope that will ever happen)
Maybe the last one will be some totally weird off the wall character, an alien emissary straight from Philos or something. It's definitely intriguing.
Did you guys notice that that bulletin info post thing (that you might have missed, because I never read them myself, usually) that came out with the period tracker is more informative than anything I was ever taught in sex ed class?
Anyways. Phew! So many updates. Caleb is a super cool take on the yandere trope, too bad I am absolutely married to my tame monster. This game is insane. I'm so happy it was recommended to me.

In reference to your SSJ4 Goku dialogue tags on that one post: I go crazy thinking about this one video I saw on Twitter comparing the subbed, translated version of the original Japanese audio of GT vs. the English dub. It is literally COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than the original. WHY did they make SSJ4 Goku LIKE THAT!!!! Personally I think SSJ4 should bring out the most animalistic traits in whoever obtains the form but WHATEVERRRRRRRRRR. I guess we can have Goku being like "You know, Omega....you don't have to hurt people for fun. You can be a good person and do good for others. Like me. Son Goku. Guy who has famously ONLY done things for moral good and nothing else." LIKE WHY WHY WHY
Sorry for the rambling. I'm okay and normal about Dragon Ball GT and SSJ4
OMG YES I HAVE SEEN THOSE SCENES IN THE SUBBED AND ITS....yeah it's so much better. I am 100% more of a dub girl when it comes to dragon ball but yeah a lot of goku's personality does admittedly get /very/ lost in translation at times. gt was definitely one of those times. idk what it was, I feel like they're always trying to make him soooo macho in the English dub? and it's such a turn off bc goku is nawtttt some macho manly man he just. he does what he does bc he loves his family and his friends and hell he has the strength to protect them so that's what he does. but like anyway. Sean schemmel sleep with one eye open.
NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR RAMBLING IN MY INBOX HOLLY I LOVE 2 SEE IT <3
