Soliam’s Salted Takes: New Bad Batch? Bad Idea
The sun is shining, the day is beautiful, I have been appropriately watered and well-fed, which makes it the perfect time for Soliam Salted Takes, Power Hour.  Now, as a former Floridian-with-dehydration-problems, you could say I love salt.  Used to eat it straight out of the shaker.  And now, as I have grown older and more decrepit by the standards of the interwebs, my tastes have expanded to that of metaphorical salt as well.
Yesterday, July 13, 2020 Lucasfilm announced they would be making a new TCW spin-off series for Disney+ focused on "Clone Force 99" also known as the Bad Batch.  And boy howdy do I have feelings about this, and none of them are positive.
In the interest of full disclosure: I have never liked the Bad Batch.  I did not like them when they were largely just wireframe models in story-reel released as semi-incomplete content back in April of 2015.  I have seen nothing about the 'finalized' releases that has made me want to go back and revise my assessment.  As such, I have not seen the complete re-release, because I am enough of a masochist in my chosen field of study to not have any desire to be one in my pretendy funtimes hobbies.  Wookiepedia has assured me that nothing much of substance changed from those story-reels in terms of main content, thus my opinions still hold in this case.
I have a strong dislike, in principle, of the idea that a series that spent a lot of time laying down the legwork to establish that the individuality and uniqueness of a person is independent of their genetic make-up chose to make the "coolest" and "most special" of its in-universe cohort extreme genetic anomalies from the norm.  I am extremely discomfited by the fact that these genetic anomalies (Solid Snake knockoff, the somehow-inexplicably-worse version of Deadshot, the personification of Encyclopaedia Britannica, and DPS/Tank hybrid LEEROY JENKINS), with "desirable mutations" are also 'mutated' to be Caucasian/White, as noted to be distinct from the remaining clones, who are based on Temuera Morrison of Maorī descent.  (An argument could be made for Wrecker being non-white, which is a completely different problem, if so:  Either he is white, which is just whitewashing with the rest of them.  Or he's not white, which means the "bigger, less-intelligent, more brutish" character is. The only not-white one.  Which is not at all better, and very possibly worse.)
In graciousness to Dave Filoni, who was behind the concept sketching of the members of the Bad Batch, I do not think the literal whitewashing of the clones was done intentionally.  George Lucas had a vision for this 'Bad Batch' of being like the eponymous 'Dirty Dozen', which is clearly where Filoni took a lot of his visual cues in the design of the Bad Batch.  That does not, however, change the fact it was done, and that it results in the Very Not Good implication of 'the unique white guys' being the superior group from the 'non-white' rest. This is an implicit bias reinforced in the text: by their stellar 'reputation', their distain for their 'reg'—and nonwhite—brothers, and the fact that Captain Rex has to 'earn' their respect, as just a few examples.
(On a personal and entirely biased additional note, I find them all to be variations of the irritating sort of "arrogant asshole action movie hero" seen most commonly in something like Michael Bay's Tranformers movies, which doesn't endear me to their characters at all.)
Fandom, by and large, has ignored this canonical whitewashing in fanart and other fan-made media.  I have no qualms with the reclamation of these characters in transformative spaces, and I honestly believe that reclamation to be a largely good thing.  It does not, however erase the original, canonical problem of them being whitewashed to begin with.
Which is where the new series announcement comes in.
Setting aside personal concerns about any sort of continuation or spin-off of The Clone Wars animated series, the idea of Disney creating a spin-off serial of any kind, based on the "better, whiter" group of a show whose main characters happened to be visually persons of color feels.  Not Good.  Disney's track record, as a corporate entity, regarding the awareness of social justice, racism, and fair treatment of persons of color is notoriously poor.  This is a show based off of an already racist/eugenics-esque (if unintentionally so) premise, and I truly cannot see any light at the end of this tunnel, not belonging to the headlight of an oncoming train.

They won't ofc but if Marvel & DC decided to revive Amalgam, what mashups would you like to see this time around?
I would be up for amalgams that aren’t that glaringly obvious. Superman/Cap, Green Lantern/Nova, Captain Marvel/WW? Nah. Give me some new or crazy stuff like Green Lantern/Thor, Moon Knight/Hawkman, Hulk/Wonder Woman, Batman/Iron Fist, or Mister Miracle/Spider-Man (Himon gets Uncle Ben’d). Although not too out there stuff like Superman/Punisher, how would you make that work? But really, I’m cool with anything fun and interesting. Like I saw an Amalgam of Firestorm and Storm called Fire Storm and it was clever and it had a good design (it’s not letting me link to it for some reason so just google it). That’s the stuff I am most interested in when it comes to character combinations.
I remember being on an Amalgam thread were people gave random Marvel and DC suggestions and depending on were the post number ended the characters with the matching numbers would get combined. The one that stuck out to me the most was Deadshot/Invisible Woman, I really want to see that one. Imagine a character having Deadshot’s marksman skills and Sue’s powers, that would be an incredible overkill character. No we just need to make Reed, Johnny, and Ben get combined with other Suicide Squad characters.
Steve Rogers/Zatanna was another one I remember, Steve being combined with a magical character did get explored with Infinity Warps but I would still like to see it. Oh man I just now thought of Sharon Carter/Constantine what an interesting but mess of a character that would be.
I got the impulse of doing Ted/Rich and Jaime/Sam for the Blue Beetles and Novas (Ted and Rich are total opposites in some aspects but it’s also what would make the combination interesting to see), I also like Rich/Jack Knight, or even Rich/Ray Terill (”but Wondy that’s some of the obvious stuff” yeah yeah but those two are too c-list for anyone to care not to mention they have their differences). I think Star-Lord/Vril Dox II would probably be super interesting. Combine his GotG and L.E.G.I.O.N maybe?
You know I also did liked Spider-Man/Superboy from the original Amalgam stuff, it was suppose to be Kon/Ben Reilly (they were both clones). But it was pretty interesting, I like seeing combinations like that.

2018: #12-SUPERVILLAINS
Tumblr media
The origin of the word “villain” reveals a secret about the significance of villains and supervillains. The origin of “villain” is the Latin word villanus; it curiously means farmhand. It refers to workers on villas or plantations. Over the years it transformed into the word “villein,” which meant serf or peasant. A villein came to mean that a person was lacking the politeness or chivalry of a knight – that the person was of a lower social status. Over some more years and human negativity further tainted the term. “Villein” in French is now “vilain” meaning bad or ugly, and the Italian “villano” means rude. What has happened is that one type of people has vilified another type of people as seen in the etymological corruption of the meaning. The significance of this is the difference between a criminal and a villain. A criminal is symbolically branded as a wrong-doer for breaking the law. A villain could be a mislabeled, misunderstood, oppressed person, a farmhand, and not necessarily a wrong-doer. Therefore some supervillains could be more like social rebels and less like evil criminals…
Early villains in fiction wore all black with a tall black hat and a twirly mustache. This was the archetypical image of villains such as Snidely Whiplash from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Early villains included the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood, Professor Moriarty with Sherlock Holmes, and Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon (see 2012: #8-MING THE MERCILESS IN THE FOGGY RING OF HELL). In the 1960’s some villains started to emerge who had huge agendas, including: Blofeld from the James Bond series and the Master from Doctor Who (see 2017: #4-SPIES and 2018: #2-GUIDE TO DOCTOR WHO). Perhaps the furthest a villain can go is to have a successful take over of the entire universe. To be able to threaten the universe’s existence nearly as a god, and to make announcements to the occupants of the universe as your subjects is when you have won the supervillain game. This has been done by the tv villains of the Master and Mantrid from the Lexx series, and each ended up destroying at least a section of the entire universe. Now that’s very, very bad and leads us to supervillains…
Supervillains are primarily comic book villains. The term originates from the 1960’s. The most simple definition of “supervillain” is a villain who has a superhero as an opponent. Supervillains often have specific costumes or outfits, catchy names, special talents or gimmicks, henchmen, secret hideouts, secret identities, and master plans. Supervillains appear in comic books to be challenging opponents of superheroes. If the supervillain does not have special powers, then they may have special skills that distinguish them like being a genius. A predominant supervillain personality trait is that of having megalomaniacal delusions. Many supervillains have similarities to dictators, terrorists, and gangsters, with aspirations of world domination.
Supervillains are not always criminals. Sometimes they behave as social rebels. They may not be farmhands or serfs, but they sure are rebelling. Heath Legder’s Joker standing there laughing with millions of dollars burning behind him is the quintessential film scene depicting this. Jack Nicholson’s Joker art gallery scene brings the rebellion to art. Burgess Meredith’s the Penguin only ever had one goal: to have Batman arrested, sued, entrapped, and disgraced. Sometimes supervillains are even depicted as being sympathetic. Magneto from the X-Men comics and films is a supervillain basically because he was a Nazi victim in WW2. Sometimes the line between the hero and villain becomes blurred. Sometimes supervillains become the good guys temporarily at least. The Legends of Tomorrow tv series has included such supervillains as Captain Cold working on a team for a common aim with other supervillains. Since there are so many supervillains, to understand them we must classify them…
Tumblr media
The first classification of supervillain is for highly talented people without any special powers. This includes Lex Luther, the Penguin, the Riddler, Harley Quinn, and Cat Woman. A sub-classification are highly talented people with special training: Deathstroke, Kingpin, and even the Joker supposed to have studied chemistry. Another sub-classification of supervillains are highly talented people with scientific gizmos: Dr. Octopus, Mr. Freeze, Captain Cold, and the Scarecrow who often uses hallucinatory drugs on his victims as seen in the excellent Batman Arkham video game series. Many gizmo users are also mad scientists (see #2018: #5-MAD SCIENTISTS).
The second category of supervillains include normal people who gained special powers. This often means that the person came into contact with a rare manufactured substance that transformed them. This classification includes the Reverse Flash, Sandman, Bane, Poison Ivy, and the alien-looking Black Manta appearing in December 2018’s Aquaman film. There are a rare few supervillains in this classification that had their transformation sparked by a natural phenomenon. One such supervillain was Vandal Savage who was seen on season two of Legends of Tomorrow. Vandal Savage was a caveman who touched an alien meteor and developed super powers including eternal life. Another supervillain in this classification, Juggernaut from the Deadpool 2 film, received his size, strength, and power from touching the magical Crimson Gem of Cyttora.
A third classification of supervillain are those with natural, special powers that they were born with. This often signifies that the person is a mutant, usually placing them in the realm of the X-Men. This classification includes: Magneto, the blue Mystique, and the also blue Apocalypse, the first mutant from 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse film. A sub-classification of supervillains with powers are aliens, with many from the Superman comics. Superman’s foe, General Zod is an alien, originating from Superman’s home planet of Krypton. General Zod also created an evil Superman clone with grey skin named Bizarro. The strange Mister Mxyzptlk is another Superman supervillain, the “imp from the Fifth Dimension.” Another sub-classification of supervillains with powers are demigods and actual gods, such as Loki or Hela, the goddess of death from 2017’s excellent Thor: Ragnarok. Thanos falls into this sub-classification, from 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War film. Thanos is basically a Grecian Titan even though he is an alien, an Eternal. The top villain in the D.C. universe is Darkseid, whose father was Zonuz, the first god of evil and also the last Old God. Darkseid had the ultimate goal of controlling everyone in the universe. The one superhero who fights the most amount of deities, demigods, and cosmic entities is Doctor Strange. His first foe was Nightmare, evil ruler of the Dream Dimension. He fought the godlike Eternity and had a regular fantastic foe with the cool-looking Dormammu, ruler of the Dark Dimension who briefly appeared in 2016’s Doctor Strange film.
Tumblr media
A fourth classification of supervillains exists, those with dark powers. These are supervillains who border on being monsters or really are monsters. One such supervillain is Flash’s foe, Gorilla Grodd. Gorilla Grodd was a gorilla in Africa that came into contact with either a meteor or a spacecraft. In either case, he became ultra-powerful, brilliant, telepathic, and he could control minds. Venom is a particularly cool villain because he is a monster, created by an alien symbiont lifeform. What is surprising about Venom in the comics is that he sort of becomes a hero for homeless people. Eventually a harness is put on him and he works for the military on missions as Agent Venom. Hopefully a sequel to the 2018 Venom film will be made that is a proper cult film. In 1944 D.C. Comics had a wealthy merchant named Cyrus Gold get killed in Slaughter Swamp near Gotham City in All American Comics. He then rose as a zombie fifty years later, as supervillain Solomon Grundy, and went on a killing spree and became a Green Lantern villain. Morbius the Living Vampire is about a man who transforms himself into a vampire via a chemistry experiment, and he dons a cool outfit and transforms from being a Spider-Man supervillain to becoming an antihero superhero with his own comic and a film on the way in the future.
A fifth classification of supervillain are atypical supervillains who may fit in no other categories. These usually are supervillains that did not originate from comic books. M. Night Shyamalan’s film from 2000, Unbreakable, features Samuel Jackson as Elijah Price, a supervillain who is returning in January 2019’s Glass along with James McAvoy’s character from 2016’s Split. A sixth classification of supervillains are those appearing in comedy. The Terror appeared in both series of The Tick, and the new Amazon The Tick live action series is pretty good. The animated Adult Swim tv series from 2006-2008, Frisky Dingo, created by Archer’s Adam Reed, featured the supervillain main character of Killface who appeared as a ridiculous but powerful lich obsessed with destroying the Earth with his mad scientist weapon, the Annihilatrix. There are not many supervillains appearing in comedy.
But there are quite a few teams of supervillains. The Suicide Squad is a team of supervillains forced to work for the good guys. The 2016 film was awful, and a sequel is in the way. The Suicide Squad team members change a lot throughout the comics but usually include Deadshot and Captain Boomerang. The Sinister Six are a group of Spider-Man supervillains who are rumored to appear in a future film. The team includes Dr. Octopus, the Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and the Sandman. 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home will nearly include the Sinister Six with: Michael Keating reprising his Vulture, Michael Mando as the Scorpion, and Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio. Yet another supervillain team is the Legion of Doom which appeared in 1978’s Challenge of the Superfriends cartoon tv series. The Legion of Doom consisted of: Bizarro, Cheetah, Captain Cold, Black Manta, Gorilla Grodd, Sinestro, Solomon Grundy, and more!
Tumblr media
If we toss all of the supervillains into the Cauldron of Creepiness, which three bubble up to the top and rise above the rest? The Joker is pretty much the number one villain. And Venom is pretty much the most monstrous villain. So those two are easy. I would have to say that Superman’s strange supervillain, Mister Mxyzptlk, would be the third to rise to the top. Since he is from the Fifth Dimension he can virtually do magic and twist reality. The Joker, Venom, and Mister Mxyzptlk are probably the top three coolest supervilllains. But if the top three strongest supervillains were selected, it would be a completely different group. Thanos with his Infinity Gauntlet is certainly in the top three; he sure had plans on making major alterations to the universe! Dormammu is definitely one of the top three most powerful supervillains with godlike powers. His head is made out of evil fire. Dormammu would not be affected by the Infinity Gauntlet, and he could take Thanos down with ease. But Dormammu could be taken down by Galactus, an alien from the planet Taa from before the Big Bang. Galactus survived the destruction of his universe by bonding with the Sentience of the Universe. He gestated for billions of years in our universe until he woke up, and he woke up hungry so he started devouring whole planets. An alien eventually made a deal for Galactus not to gobble up his planet, and the alien was transformed into the herald of Galactus, the Silver Surfer. So Galactus is pretty much the most powerful supervillain.
Superhero films pretty much started with 1966’s Batman: the Movie with Adam West. The quality of the film is usually directly related to the quality of the depiction of the supervillain. 1989’s Batman with Tim Burton’s vision and Jack Nicholson as the Joker is a classic. The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger as the Joker is also an incredible film. The Dark Knight Rises with Bane is also a decent film with an amazing scope. As for tv, Adam West’s Batman series is one of the best for outrageous supervillains. Cesar Romero’s Joker is excellent, Burgess Meredith served up the best Penguin to date, Frank Gorshwin provided an effervescent and the best Riddler, and Vincent Price laid a wonderful Egghead. All three seasons of the series are finally available on disc. Ralph Bakshi’s Spider-Man cartoon series from 1967-1969 was a great series also for its supervillains. It delivered the best Green Goblin even from any film, included traditional supervillains from Electro to the Rhino, had neat-looking monsters, and it featured great incidental music. The Legends of Tomorrow tv series features interesting supervillains, including some who are members of the team of the superheroes. Captain Cold and Heatwave are Flash supervillains who made the transition into being acting superheroes. An entertaining recent depiction of a supervillain was by Tom Cavanaugh as the Reverse Flash on the first season of The Flash tv series. These days Netflix is starting to cancel the Marvel superhero series – the ones with the least interesting supervillains.
Back to the derivation of the word, villain. Could supervillains be related in any way to farmhands, serfs, the poor, or social rebels? Are the superheroes now the super-rich land owners, the knights? Are superheroes ever depicted as being millionaires? Like Bruce Wayne…Tony Stark…Oliver Queen… Hmmm, maybe sometimes the supervillains may not be as bad as they seem, and the superheroes may sometimes be really more villain and less hero…

Pokemon Bat
https://jaredmithrandirolorin.blogspot.com/2018/09/pokemon-bat.html
This is an idea for a Pokemon Rom Hack.  I’d like it to be a Third Generation Romhack (Mainly LeafGreen) in-spite of the fact that one 4th generation Pokemon gets name dropped.  I can't make it myself so I encourage someone else to elaborate on the basic ideas I'm laying out here. The region is called Gotham You play as Bruce Wayne, a ten year old.  It is the two year anniversary of your Parents being gunned down in front of you by Pokemon thieves.  After having a nightmare about it you run into the woods behind your house and fall into a cave where you befriend a Zubat, and decide to go off on a Pokemon journey, the Zubat becomes your starter Pokemon.  Your Butler Alfred Pennyworth will function as both Bill and Oak, managing all the PC stuff for you.  And Jim Gordon will play the role of Looker. The rival character is Selina Kyle, who’s starter Pokemon is a Meowth. The evil team in this one is more like Team Rocket, being mainly interested in money as opposed to later Teams that are basically cults.  It is called Team Umbrella, and it’s leader is known as The Empoleon of Crime.  His real identity is Oswald Cobblepot, a trainer of Bird Pokemon who runs a Pokestop called the Iceberg Lounge, that among other things houses the Ice Type gym.  He won’t actually have an Empoleon on him though, this game’s roster should be limited to Pokemon you can use in LeafGreen.  He is particularly obsessed with the Bird Type Legendary Pokemon, which includes the Kanto Trio and Ho-Oh. The Gym Leader of the IceBerg Lounge gym is Victor Fries. The other 7 Gym leaders include, Drury Walker, the Bug Type Gym leader, Lester Buchinsky, the Electric Type Gym leader and Joe Rigger, the Fire Type Gym Leader.  I like including the three filler bosses of the Batman 89 NES game in any Batman video game ideas I come up with. Pamela Isley, the Grass/Poison Type Gym Leader. Jonathan Crane, the Ghost Type Gym Leader. Jervis Tetch, the Psychic Type Gym Leader. Natalia Mitternacht, Dark Type Gym Leader. The Elite Four will be League of Assassins Members, Bane (Fighting type), Onyx (Rock Type) Bronze Tiger (Steel Type), and Lady Shiva (Dragon Type). And the Champion will be Ra’s Al Ghul. Who’s Pokemon team will actually be the Legendary Beasts, Lugia, Celebi and Mew who he mentions was his starter centuries ago.  I feel like that fits his Eco Terrorist agenda.  What I'm doing with Ra's here is the most unprecedented in Canon Pokemon, having any NPC use Legenderies.  (Though in Stadium a Rocket Grunt has a Moltress).  Ra's Immortality is why I feel it works.  It's sometimes implied that Mew is something that wasn't so rare in the distant past.  I thought about referencing that immortality gimmick with an all Fossil Pokemon team, but decided that'd be more Vandal Savage, plus Fossils are all part Rock so don't have enough type variety for a Champion.  The Johto Legendries have been the most strongly tied to the franchise's environmentalist themes so I see them fitting Ra's the best.  Plus in this version of the Unvierse these character are not necessarily Evil. There will be an Unknown cave in the game where they are being researched by Edward Nygma who trains them exclusively, you can battle him but it’s not required.   It’s companion Game is Pokemon Cat, where everything is the same except you play as Selina and Bruce is the Rival.  And a different Origin story, someone else will have to write that.  And Holly Robinson (your friend with benefits) will replace Alfred. I made a conscience decision not to shoehorn in every Batman villain, Black Mask, Two-Face, Deadshot, are all ones that wouldn’t work in this premise.  Sorry @about-faces And that goes double for The Joker.  There are many great Batman stories with no Joker in them.  So given the Joker overload of the Arkham Games I figured a video game Batman universe that opts out of forcing in The Joker would be nice. Those left out can also be viewed as being saved for a possible Sequel.  I was limiting this to the Pokemon available in the Advanced Generation games which are what I’m most Nostalgic for.   It would be easier to come up with a Two-Face story-line in the Black and White Generation where the core Legendary Pokemon are Yin-Yang themed which makes them a fitting target for Two-Face.  Other Pokemon that tend to come in duality themed pairs include Plusle and Minun (the first Pika clones), and Espeon and Umbreon the second Gen Eveelutions who are thematically day and night, (that factors into why they’re used in Pokemon Colosseum).  He could also be someone who only fights in double battles. Hell, thematically the Sun and Moon generation fits my Bat & Cat contrast better with the Mascot Legendaries being a Solar Lion and a Lunar Bat. A Joker based Pokemon trainer would like have a pair of Poochyena/Mightyena as homages to The Joker’s Hyenas, and maybe he'd have interest in a Mr.Mime or Mime Jr.

In the world of comics, Viktor Bogdanovic is a relative youngster. Recently on his Twitter (@VikBogdanovic) he announced that he would be working on Action Comics! This is a huge honor to any artist, to work on the original comic character on the original comic! He wasn’t just lucky though, he worked extremely hard to get to where he is today and it shows!
He started his career at image comics in 2013 working on Reality Check. The book focusing on a writer who creates a love-sick comic hero who suddenly becomes real and forces the protagonist to help him find true love, while the villain enters reality and goes on a murderous rampage. Two years later, in 2015 Viktor was brought on to DC where he worked on the comic for Batman: Arkham Knight which furthered his skills in the medium before being able to create New Super-Man!

I reached out to Viktor on twitter after finishing a review of New Super-Man to see if he would like to interview with us. I was fortunate enough the he had the time and was able to do so. Being a fan of his work myself since New Super-Man #1, I was extremely excited to see what he would tell us! There are so many intricate and small parts to New Super-Man that can be over looked because it reaches deep into the history of the comics. But don’t take my word for it, see what he has to say!
Q: What originally inspired you to get into comics and illustration? What inspires you today?
I watched a ton of Cartoons as a kid and then soon discovered comics and that was it. I was hooked. I started drawing my own Superman and Spider-Man stories at the age of 12 or so. I have never been more productive than I was at that time. I remember filling a bunch of large sized notebooks with sequential art in record time that my dad didn’t wanna buy.
Q: How did you originally get into the comics industry?
I did a few indie books and soon got the chance to work on my first mini series for Image Comics which was called Reality Check. I kept working on my drawing skills like a mad man and eventually brought up the courage to send a few sample pages to DC. It seemed unlikely that I’d ever hear back from them but two editors responded almost immediately. They gave me a test script to draw and about a week later I was working as the main penciller on Batman: Arkham Knight. It all went so fast, I didn’t even have time to process it all. So BAK went on for almost a year. Then came the next project with Deadshot and after that New Super-Man. I’ve been working pretty much non-stop for DC since the end of 2014 producing nearly 500 pages of sequential art which seems like a really crazy number to me when I see it written down like that, haha. Like I should go to a shrink or something to take care of my OCD (obsessive comic disorder).
Q: How did your opportunity to work on Superman come about?
My editor just called me up one evening and told me that they’d like me to draw Action Comics. I was really psyched about it and also a little bummed out because I really loved working on New Super-Man. But there are just a few books in comics you can’t turn down as an artist and Action Comics is one of them so I said yes.
Q: What persona and story are you trying to tell through your work?
It all depends on the script. First, I try to figure out the right tone, rhythm and atmosphere. Then give the characters some dimension and personality through facial expressions and body language. I mostly follow a gut feeling. It’s all very intuitive. No pre-concept.
Q: What inspired the looks of each of the three Justice League of China members?
As for the costumes: they’re all derived from Kenan’s outfit. That’s the first one I designed and the other ones had to be similar because they all work for the same secret government agency. Chinese Wonder Woman is probably a mix of Sailor Moon and that Street Fighter chick. Chinese Batman looks like a young chubby Mr. Spock when his mask is off. I thought that’d fit his personality.
Q: What were the most important things you wanted to show in New Super-Man?
When we announced this we got a lot of comments on the fact that the New Super-Man is Chinese, that it all takes place in China, etc. The whole discussion about diversity in comics and all that stuff. It immediately started a political debate. Some people were very skeptical and I don’t blame them. We’ve seen enough bad examples of diversity for diversity’s sake. But I’ve read some of Gene Yang’s previous work so I knew that it’d be a good story that I could work with. And in the end that’s all that matters. A fun story is a fun story, no matter who’s in it or where it takes place. And when the political discussion ends and people start talking about plot twists and they start talking about a character, not because he’s of this or that ethnicity but because he’s cool and fun – that’s when you know you’re on to something.
Q: What led to the decision to recreate the cover of Action Comics #1 in issue 5 and why did you decide to do that?
That’s all Gene. The script said something like “Kenan is holding up a police car… etc… similar to the scene on the cover of Action Comics #1” so I drew it. Fun stuff

Q: The “S” on Kenan’s chest is very unique from the Man of Steel’s in that it is connected to Chinese philosophy, was it originally conceived with that meaning behind it or did that come after?
No, Gene had the octagon shape and all that stuff worked out pretty early on. It’s a popular Chinese symbol with a lot of meaning so that’s why he used it.
#gallery-0-12 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-12 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-12 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-12 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Q: All of the heroes and villains in New Super-Man, such as the Freedom Fighters of China, are very flamboyant and interesting, what informed the choices of how to draw and color them?
They were all created on the fly, really (except the older characters from previous comics) so I’m glad people like them. I wish I would’ve had more time to design them. Not sure they’d look better tough, heh.
Q: What advice would you give to the artist who will next draw New Super-Man? And who would be your choice to take over if you could hand pick a team?
Easy. Just give Kenan puffy cheeks and make him likeable (actually that’s not easy at all, haha) and if I could handpick a team: I think Billy than did a great job with issues 7 & 8 and I hear he’s on the next issues as well so I’m really looking forward to that. + If we could clone Erik Larsen to do an issue or two that’d be cool to (because the real Erik Larsen sure as hell ain’t leaving Savage Dragon for some Chinese Superman – or any other book for that matter). Gene Yang is a given. Nobody can write New Super-Man like he does.
Q: When it comes to the details you show in the environment, fashion and the characters, you have done an amazing job at recreating China and how it feels. What research did you do in-order to include those details?
We had a few real locations from Shanghai, etc. But the rest is just me trying to remember all the Jackie Chan movies I watched as a kid.
Q: As one of the creators of this whole world and the characters that inhabit it, what were the most important ideas that you wanted to convey to your audience?
The idea of growing up, finding yourself and your place in this world and having some fun while doing it.
Q: What can we expect to be unique about your take on Superman?
Wow, that’s tough. I don’t know. So many artists have drawn this iconic character and you’d think we’ve seen it all. He looks easy to draw on a first glance but he’s actually not. He has to look both cool and a little bit old fashioned at the same time. He’s also a brute as well as elegant. So, a lot of contradictions there but I’ll try to bring them all together as good as I can.
Q: On Twitter you’ve recently posted a picture with Zod, can we expect to see him in your first arc drawing the Man of Steel?
Most definitely! We’ll all kneel before Zod.
Q: Is there anything you’d like to tell your fans?
Yes! You should all love each other! And then go buy New Super-Man and Action Comics before somebody else does! Cheers!!
Viktor, like Kong Kenan, is such a bright person, unlike Kenan, his is also humble. He has done, and continues to do, great work. He creates eye catching and memorable characters and brings them to life on the page. I have thoroughly enjoyed the work he has done on New Super-Man, I will miss his style in the adventures of Kenan Kong but look forward to seeing what he does with Clark Kent!
