Things To Keep In Mind While Taking A New prosthesis
For individuals who have lost their arm, a limb, or other extremities to amputation, a prosthesis can be an important part of the rehabilitation process. The artificial prosthetic limb or prosthetic device can increase mobility and give the wearer the capacity to carry out necessary daily tasks. Most significantly, it gives the person the tools they need to maintain their independence. So in this blog let’s understand things to keep in mind while taking new Prosthetics.
Tumblr media
The Types of Activities That Are Targeted
The prosthetic Leg/arm targets a range of functional activities and it is the most important consideration. The choice of prosthetic is influenced by the everyday tasks the amputee must complete, both at work and at home, as well as leisure physical activities like walking, jogging, playing, etc. so making all that an important point we have listed a few conditions which you need to consider as well.
Adaptive Needs: Switching to a new prosthesis can be required as the residual limb stabilizes. The amputee might have to start with a temporary prosthesis before switching to a long-term prosthesis. It might also be essential to alter the prosthesis due to discomfort, pain,  instability, etc. Another aspect to take into account when picking the best prosthesis is the fact that they often need to be replaced every three to five years and take some getting accustomed to for the user.
Weather Conditions: It is crucial to also take into account the local climate of the area where the prosthetics will be used. The prosthetic and the stump are both affected by the weather. The prosthetic's effectiveness is impacted by cold, humidity, and dry weather. Friction and burning can also be caused by dry skin. Excessive sweating and discomfort are brought on by humid conditions.
Using Routine: It takes some time and effort to get accustomed to wearing a prosthetic. Numerous adjustments are performed to the prosthetic after the initial fitting in order to get the perfect fit. In order to help the amputee feel comfortable using the prosthesis with the least amount of wear-time, a prosthetist works with them on the wearing schedule. Until the amputee is at ease, the wear time is gradually extended. Therefore, the wearing schedule is important while selecting a prosthetic.
Last but not least- Choosing the best prosthesis: It's crucial to locate a reliable manufacturer or supplier of high-quality prosthesis. The certified prosthetist orthotist will prescribe best prescription and best fit to you. Thus, Artalive works with vastly experienced prosthetists and chooses the best prosthetist to give the optimum fit so that the amputee can live the lifestyle they wish. Patients struggling with foot, ankle, or gait issues can see tremendous benefits from ankle-foot orthosis. In addition, orthosis worn regularly may allow patients to permanently remedy ongoing issues or prolong the ability to walk for patients who suffer from degenerative disease. However, to truly understand the benefits of an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), you need to understand AFOs themselves.

Request: Hey! (: Could you write a winchesters!sister fic where the reader has got a leg prosthesis ? I recently (well, like three months ago) got my right leg amputated due to sepsis and maybe it could cheer me up. I love all of your AMAZING stories and I know, my English is terrible. Have a good day! - Anonymous
Author’s Note: I hope you’re doing better now! None of you know this, but whenever this blog started, I had recently been in an accident and for a while, we thought I wouldn’t have my foot for much longer, but everything turned out good and I wear a foot and ankle orthosis (a leg brace) on my right leg. So, I kind of know what you’re going through. Also, I have two more requests for a disabled reader and those will happen! I thought of combining a few of them, but I don’t think it would be fair to two different requests about two different things be combined into one just because of the same factor of a disabled reader. Also, your English is amazing and thank you so much! I hope you like this and I hope this cheers you up. – Haley xx

Ever since that unlucky day a few months ago, my life had been turned upside down. During a wendigo hunt with my brothers up in Ohio, that damn wendigo got ahold of me when I was trying to shoot it, causing it to pull my right knee out of the socket. I finally got a shot in its head when it dropped me on the ground. Excruciating pain soared throughout my entire body as I laid on the cold ground waiting for my brothers to find me.
The pain was so overbearing that I had eventually blacked out. When I woke up, I was in a hospital surrounding my doctors and nurses all trying to figure out what was wrong with.
What was wrong with me was that I laid in the woods for a matter of a few days before Dean and Sam could find me because when the wendigo grabbed me, it took me back to its cave. I laid there blacked out from pain and in shock while everything below the knee in my right leg started to die. A dislocated knee had torn the ligaments, veins, and nerves from the knee down.
When I woke up again, I was in a small hospital room. The room was blurry but I could make out the forms of Dean and Sam leaning up against the wall opposite of me. When I tried to move, they both rushed over to me.
“Hey kid, how are you?” Dean asked, smoothing my hair back.
“In pain,” I groaned. “And hot. I want this blanket off of me.”
“No,” Sam said, shaking his head, “you should keep it on. It’s freezing in here.”
My eyes were starting to come back in focus and I could see how worried and upset they both looked. “What’s wrong?” I asked them.
“You just got out of surgery,” Dean answered. “Everything’s fine.”
“Then let me take this blanket off,” I said, trying to kick it off.
Dean sighed. “All right.”
“Dude, no,” Sam interjected. “Not like this.”
“Sam’s she’s gotta know.”
“What the hell are you two talking about?” I demanded.
Sam sat on the edge of the bed next to me while Dean peeled the blanket off my legs. I started at my legs while tears pricked my eyes. “W…What…?”
My right leg was gone. Well, not all of it. From the knee down. My foot, my toes…all gone. “When we found you in the woods, it was about three days later, Y/N,” Sam said, grabbing my hand. “Your leg was basically dead.”
“Your leg was amputated, Y/N,” Dean said.
I let go of Sam’s hand, reached forward, and started pawing at the bandaged stump that was my leg. “No, don’t do that,” Dean said, taking my hand in his. “Leave your leg alone.”
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I buried my face into Dean’s shoulder bawling my eyes out.
“Today’s the day,” Dean whistled as he pulled the Impala into an empty parking spot.
Sam turned around from the front seat and gave me a small smile. “Are you okay?”
I tore my eyes away from the window and looked at my older brother. “Yeah…” I nodded. “It’ll be good to finally walk right again.”
For the past few weeks, I had been stuck with walking or hobbling around with a pair of crutches. Dean and Sam would both offer to bring me things or push me around in a wheel chair, but honestly, I didn’t want any of that. I just wanted to be able to walk up and down the stairs without Sam carrying me out or take a shower right. I just walked to walk. I just wanted my leg back.
“…Good…” Sam said. He and Dean both got out of the car. Sam opened up the car door for me and Dean handed me my crutches. I pulled up and steadied myself before we headed inside.
The waiting room for the Prosthetics and Orthotics Shop here in Lawrence was empty. It wasn’t my first time here. At first, when I was released from the hospital, I was referred to this small office to get my leg prosthetic. The doctor told me how my amputated leg was casted and I should have it in a few weeks. He also explained how it worked and how different it would be than walking with my actually two legs.
Before I even looked at the forms, I was called to the back. Dean kept followed me slowly, one arm behind my back for support while Sam trailed behind us. The room we were led to was huge with long parallel bars sitting in the middle. The doctor, Dr. Jacoby held open the door for me was I hobbled my way in.
“How have you been, Y/N?” He asked, sitting down on the rolling chair.
“Fine,” I said, taking my seat on the patient bed. “Kinda nervous.”
“Oh, that’s fine,” Dr. Jacoby said. “How have the crutches been treating you? Have you fell over yet?”
I side-eyed my brothers, “…Maybe once.”
“What do you mean once?” Sam asked me.
“Yeah, and when?” Dean asked.
I shrugged. “I had Cas with me. I was fine.”
They both shook their heads and Dr. Jacoby chuckled. “Well, I have your prosthetic here, let’s get it out and see how everything fits.”
Dr. Jacoby rolled over to a box near the parallel bars and opened it up. He pulled out something and rolled backed to me. The leg was half plastic half metal bar and had a shoe already one what I assume would be a plastic foot. Dr. Jacoby explained to me and my brothers how to properly put the prosthetic on while he was attaching it to my body.
“Can you swing both legs?” He asked.
I did and from the corner of my legs, I thought I saw Sam wipe his eyes.
“Good! Now, I want you to use your crutches, walk over to the parallel bars, and then use those. I’ll be able to see if we need to make any adjustments while you walk.”
Dean handed me the crutches and I stood up, wincing when my leg put pressure on my new one. “Are you okay?” Dean asked.
“Yeah,” I said, putting the crutches under my arm. “It just feels…weird.”
“And it will,” Dr. Jacoby said. “For a while at least, if you feel pain and any discomfort while wearing this, I want you to call.”
I nodded my head. Took a breath. And took a step.
I did it.
I slowly but surely made my way over to the parallel bars walking with my new leg. When I got to them, I handed the crutches back to Dean and again slowly walked down the length of the parallel bars. “How does it feel?” Sam asked. “Still feel different?”
“Not really…?” I said. There was a floor to ceiling mirror on the wall behind the bars, I stood there and looked at my new leg. “It just feels like… I don’t know… normal now I guess.”
“Well, that’s good,” Dean said.
I used one crutch to walk outside. I opened up the car door to slide back into the back seat but before I could, Sam placed his hand on my shoulder. I looked up at him and saw tears pooling in his eyes. “Are you crying?” I asked him.
“Y/N… you have no idea how much we love you,” Sam said, wrapping an arm around me. “You’ve been through so much the past few months… but now you’re walking again.”
I wrapped my arms around him and squeezed. “Sam, I’m still me.”
“I know,” he said, letting go. “But still. I’m happy for you.”
I reached up and wiped a tear from his nose. “Do you want in this hugging party?” I asked Dean.
Dean huffed but walked over to us anyway. “Sam’s right,” Dean said, pulling me to his chest. “This all sucks, but everything’s all right again.”
I smiled. “You two are the best big brothers a girl could ask for.”

Hey there, my name is Elena Figler! This summer, I’ll be working at a pet services store in my hometown while advocating for the Black Lives Matter Movement.
1. What university do you attend and what is your major? Do you have any minors, concentrations, and/or clubs affiliated?
I attend Syracuse University (SU) for a B.S. in Biotechnology and a Minor in Chinese Language. I am also a peer mentor for the Dean’s Team in the College of Arts & Sciences, a peer mentor and staff member of First Year Players, a leader in the Syracuse University Marching Band, a brother of Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Chemistry Fraternity, and part of the Renée Crown University Honors Program.
2. How do your studies relate to ecology, hydrology, and/or environmental justice?
While I was supposed to start this spring, in the fall I will be in a research lab that works on a few projects relating to ecology. I will most likely be working on the relationship between carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and how they affect plant physiology, but another project includes plant-fungi interactions for enhancing bio fuels.
3. What is your favorite source of literature related to ecology, hydrology, and/or environmental justice?
For a writing class, I researched the impact of lab-created meats on the environment and overall human health. One paper I still reflect on is “Technology as Responsibility: Failure, Food Animals, and Lab-Grown Meat” by W. Galusky. He identifies meat itself as a technology that humans manipulate, and that it is human interaction that defines it as technology. With the constant desire for higher efficiency, agriculture has been reduced to a wasteful process, which in turn will be reflected in cultured meat and lead to longer-term effects on the atmosphere and climate change.
4. What has been your favorite academic experience to date?
My favorite academic experience is back in high school - I was an exchange student in Taiwan. I was able to experience classes in another country, make lasting friendships, and I even have friends in Taiwan that use the same organic chemistry textbook that we use at SU! It’s amazing to still see the connections that STEM makes across the world.
5. What are some of the biggest struggles you’ve had to overcome while in college? What is one thing you would recommend to incoming freshman or transfer students that you wish you had known?
The biggest struggle I had to overcome as a freshman was imposter syndrome. As a woman in STEM and by being 17 my entire freshman year, I felt out of place, but I made so many friends that reinforced to me that I do belong and can be successful in my classes and my field. One piece of advice I would give to freshman would be to live in a learning community or near people in similar classes. I lived in the honors learning community my freshman year and it made large classes feel small since I would always see familiar faces, and it would make getting together to study a lot easier!
6. What type of career are you hoping for after you graduate?
After graduation, I hope to work at a biotech company in Boston before pursuing a Master’s in Prosthetics and Orthotics to become a prosthetist or possibly continue my studies with a program in regenerative medicine.
7. What do you like to do for fun apart from your major?
Outside of my major, I’ve worked at a family owned pet supply store in my hometown for several years where I’m trained on cat and dog nutrition, and I’m very interested in human nutrition as well. I also love listening to music and being around animals.

Return to Vientiane
Having whimped out and avoided the bus to Vientiane, a 10 hour ride at least, I made my way to the airport in Phonsavan for the 30 minutes flight to Vientiane. During the fight, I had a chance to see several things. First, was the road I avoided taking in the mountains and whew, the flight was a smart move. I was also able to see the impact of what an open bit mine looks like and it is shocking to that kind of scare on the earth from the air. Sure, does make you think about mankind is doing to the planet. Prior to leaving for Vientiane I had booked my first Airbnb ever at a place called Jungle House on the outskirts of town. Not only was I attracted to the property the real attraction was the couple who had opened their house to visitors. Mike is a transplanted Englishman who had worked in Laos since 1994 and lived here since 2002. His work was devoted to helping people with disabilities and he had established the national prosthetic and orthotic service named COPE in 1997. Later he had set up the COPE Visitor Centre, which has been the number one tourist attraction in Vientiane. His wife Dr. Xoukiet Panyanouvong, is the foremost Lao authority on human trafficking , who has lead the United Nations Action for Co-operation against Trafficking in Persons in Laos. Xoukiet is the eldest daughter of Pimpho Panyanouvong, who was aide de camp to Prince Souphanouvong, the Red Prince, during the revolution. Mike greeted me at the airport like a long-lost friend and I knew I was going to enjoy my three nights at his place. His knowledge of the local history and politics was the kind of stuff I like learning about. On the way to his place he had to stop at the latest supermarket in town, called Ringping. Boy, was that a surprise as it was just like any grocery store at home. It had everything including Kraft Dinner! Once back at his place it saw that it was better than in the pictures. The main house is something Mike designed and than had built. It turned out I was staying in the cottage which was two large self-contained bedrooms each with its own washroom and a shard kitchen and living room. The whole charm of staying at Jungle House is you are made to feel as if you are part of the family. You pretty much have free rain over the whole property and all guests eat together in the main dinning area and its soaring ceiling. Prior to dinner we all shared drinks on the deck overlooking a magnificent pond discussing all range of topics and at times being drowned out by the frogs who seemed to be determined to have more to say than we did. On my last night at Jungle House, Mike and I had gotten into a discussion that had somehow drifted into a discussion of the Spitfire and how on my visit to Myanmar in 2004 I had meet the commander of the last operation Spitfire squadron in the world. Until Mike told me I did not that many Spitfires had been buried to keep them out of the hands of the Japanese when Burma fell in defeat in World War ll. It turns out that his father was also a Spitfire pilot and had commanded the 242 Squadron in the Mediterranean and was considered an Ace with 10.5 confirmed kills and given the Distinguished Flying Cross. All in all, it was three nights of relaxation with a daily trip into Vientiane to check out a tourist site or two and just walk around. Exactly the kind of thing I like. Next Stop Riverview Resort near the Kong Lor Cave.

However, it is nonetheless about $9,000 in need of what I must rectify my plumbing drawback. They also request that I sign a launch.
