my favorite thing about satan is how like half the time if youre being cheeky and forward with him about giving him a kiss, giving him a hug, holding his hand, etc, hes so unphased and sometimes even cheeky back??? like "You want to hold my hand? OJ Simpson: Made in America Chapter 1: Take on Civil Rights Discussion

“O.J. Simpson: Made in America ” is a documentary style series featured on ESPN that covers the alleged crime, trial and verdict of the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Rob Goldman, following the accused and now infamous O.J. Simpson through out his entire life, leading up to the trial of his wife’s murder. This series displays not only the rollercoaster ride that was the trial itself but it also heavily visits social, institutional and cultural issues associated with racism and prejudice within society during O.J.’s upbringing into his career.

O.J. is a black man who felt that he had finally transcended beyond his racial identity until he was brought back into the reality that many African American people, unfortunately, have to come to terms with when living in a country where the people are perpetually divided by the color of their skin. This series displays how brutal public and media opinions can be especially (and disproportionately) when the “perpetrator” in question is black, or at least not white

For the purposes of this blog, I will be honing in on the more social justice side of this story, focusing primarily on the first episode of this series.(As it includes much of the backstory of the Simpson family and the struggles African American people faced at the time of O.J.’s upcoming success in the world of football and the media in general.)

“The image of Los Angeles was milk and honey, there’s no prejudice in Los Angeles” (12:01) this quote is stated by Danny Bakewell discussing the mirage created around moving to California from the fifties to the seventies, how African American people of all ages flocked there in pursuit of success and opportunities they thought would never be accessible to them in the south. “The hope is, all trouble I’ve known will be gone” “I will no longer be held down by this notion held against my hair and my skin” (13:18). This quote was extremely powerful in my opinion, it truly shows how desperate African American people were to find this sort of utopia where they could live in peace and coexist in society without discrimination or the fear of it. 

While most had rose-colored glasses on at the mention of Los Angeles, all was not as it seemed. Bakewell starts a conversation about how if he knew how it really was and had the money, he would have gone back home as soon as he arrived. “Racism out here was as stark as it was in the Jim Crow South”  (14:45), you essentially had no more rights or power in one place or the other and this was blatantly obvious. 

Police corruption and brutality is a featured hot topic of discussion within this episode as well. The LAPD being the main point of contention in this context of brutality. William H. Parker, the newly sworn in police chief at the time had a juxtaposed reputation. On the one hand he was accredited to turning LAPD around into a world-renowned law enforcement agency while simultaneously being accused of picking officers straight from Klan rallies. “I think he, at minimum was racially insensitive, at maximum, he was racist” (16:19)

These issues and many more regarding the unfair treatment of African American people between the 1950′s to the 1970′s are thoroughly addressed just in the first episode of the series alone. To be frank,I could very much go on another thousand words or so to discuss the Watts riots in regards to police brutality, the difference between being not racist and anti-racist when it comes to O.J. and don't forget the classist behavior shown by O.J and how he never wanted to get “political” or endorse any sort of civil rights movements. It just makes me think; did he really transcend his racial identity or leave it behind all together?
