thinking about outlaw ty and how cowboyification is an act of desperation and fear and he's chasing anything that might make him understand who he is when he isn't ty betteridge and texas wasn't his first home but maybe it could be the first one he's built for himself. he's a cowboy because he needs to be but its also the last thing he has left!!!!!

hey what if outlaw ty picked up some shitty black nail polish at the store one day and confidently stated that he was going to paint texas michaels nails. and texas michaels like, you are? and outlaw tys like, yes! you know, i used to do this all the time when i was younger- not in recent times, unfortunately, but, ah, itd be nice to get back into the habit of it. and hes saying all that while gently holding texas michaels hand in place as he carefully applies the nail polish. and texas michael thinks back to all the times they were in this same exact position -different tys, different michaels- except the nail polish applicator was a butchers knife, instead of stories from tys younger years they were empty platitudes. and he still lets outlaw ty paint his nails

So I've been cooking up this Ty Betteridge thought for a little while now and I considered putting it on the discord but I decided here was a better medium. Anyways.

I think some of my previous ideas about Ty as a character and where his arc is going were looking at his beliefs about iterations being the same person the wrong way round. I sort of had the feeling that Ty's big breaking point as a character was going to be having to grapple with that idea falling apart. And it seemed like the pieces for that were already there. I mean look at Outlaw Ty. Clearly dissent and difference between Ty Betteridges is possible. How do they continue to consider themselves one person?

Except, in 108, Outlaw Ty is literally the example of how well Ty Betteride functions as a cohesive whole despite existing across multiple iterations, sending a coded message to himself that, only he himself would understand, and I started thinking about it again recently and realized, what if Outlaw Ty isn't actually as much as an aberration among the Ty's as we've previously thought.

Blue and Outlaw Ty are so far the only Ty's we know of who have directly gone against orders for reasons of caring too much about Michael Walter's and it seems like this makes them different. Outlier Tys. Except, the treatment of these Ty's by the other Ty's isn't really to cast them out exactly. If anything, Green seems to be doing everything in his power to protect them. Outlaw Ty could have easily just been terminated. I can't say for sure. This might simply exist as a means to cover his own ass against whatever Kas would do if he found out about it, but it seems like Green has some sympathies towards the more cowboy-leaning Ty Betteridges.

Perhaps the cowboy influence is not creating an inconsistency within Ty Betteridge. Perhaps it's still an underlying trait that all Ty's share it's just that circumstances make it harder to hide for some than others.

I still think that Ty's beliefs about iterations are going to be his fatal flaw as a character, but I feel as though rather than being a belief that falls apart, it's a belief that is a hint to the fact that Ty might not be able to keep justifying his actions to himself forever.
