Exiting 2017 with jobs and projects isn’t how we entered it.

The start of 2017 featured the both of us without work. I’d just finished a freelance gig at the end of 2016 and Kimmer just ended her previous contract: an unhealthy mix of paycheck opportunity with no work/life boundaries.

So.

We entered that New Year with zero thrust. White knuckling all the way.

If you’ve never been unemployed, never reached the end of a project without your next gig on the horizon and had to apply for unemployment... then you’ve never had the pleasure of the soul-crushing, confidence-shredding experience that is applying for jobs.

It’s an effort seemingly without end and filled with infinite variations on your resume and cover letter as well as the similarly endless polishing of your professional website and LinkedIn. It’s an exercise in humility, an unwelcome test of character, as your resumes, cover letters, and applications are faithfully ignored. Like everything you send into the world is falling on deaf ears.

Or like you’re looking for the Island of Misfit Toys... only you can’t find it. Or you’re looking but they’re all hiding from you.

Balls.

With all that in mind, then, we offer our Thanks to all the admins, recruiters, and human resourcers who called us back, spoke with us, or even replied with the official company email of regret.

Thank you.

You have no idea how important it is to be acknowledged.

Actually... maybe you do.

Our deepest, most heartfelt Thanks goes to all those who helped keep our professional careers afloat in 2017. They helped in specific, tangible ways to provide the thrust with which we’re entering 2018.

So.

To the good folk at The Center in Edmonds... wow. Thank you for responding so quickly to Kimmer’s application. The speed with which you brought her into your professional home was breathtaking.

To Tom... thank you for talking me up beyond all reason to other professionals and clients alike. Your check... is in the mail. ;-)

To Stephanie and Chris... thank you for taking a chance on a complete stranger. It was a pleasure getting to know you both. :-)

Beth. To this day, I have no idea how you found me... but thank you so much for the work. Yours is the first and only (so far) project during the course of which I never met the client or producer in person.

Brave New World indeed.

Stacy. Seriously, I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve you... but thanks for being my post-production mom. You’re the best.

John. My career wouldn’t be what it is without you. Thanks for thinking of me always and thank you, especially, for having the confidence to allow me to try new things. My “Music by” credit wouldn’t be there without you. Nor would the Emmy nominations.

Speaking of which, a big thank you to Cara for thinking of me when she won her producer Emmy. It was your moment... and it was gracious of you to share it.

Finally, Charlie. My future would not be my future without your help. You were there with a job offer when my full time came to an end. You’re there still with projects as you conjure them. And I’m ever thankful you have enough faith in me that you willingly undertake the exhausting commutes up ‘n down I-5 & 99 just to get here.

I’m humbled.
