why is it all titled as one book when theres 7 arcs. thats actually more than second season. ougi is the first and the last arc. why's there two sodachi ones in a row. thats scary

it feels like deliberately calling back to how bakemonogatari despite having five arcs was one book (also released in 3 parts, although I think there are some editions with 2?)

It's been a while since I posted about it, but I just finished watching Monogatari. Whether or not you care, here are my thoughts!

Bakemonogatari: I had no idea anime could be like this. So interesting and entertaining! 8.5/10

Nekomonogatari Black: The more Hanekawa we get, the better. 8.5/10

Nisemonogatari: What a cool season, focusing and expanding on the characters we've already met (although, Karen Bee drags on for far too long and doesn't say enough) 8/10

Monogatari Second Season: This season has some of my favourite arcs in the entire show (shoutout to my dude Kaiki for being the way he is) 9/10

Hanamonogatari: Pretty cool afterstory to cap everything off (even though I wasn't finished with the show yet lol). It felt slightly different from the other stories. 7/10

Tsukimonogatari: This part lives or dies on your opinion of Ononoki, which is to say she's in my top 3, so I loved it (also, how can you not like her??) 8.5/10

Owarimonogatari: Ougi really takes the spotlight in this season, and it's great. It adds to her mystery. Plus, delving into Araragi's past is very interesting. 8/10

Koyomimonogatari: What a breath of fresh air! It's not like the show was getting stale or anything, but it was so refreshing to see the premise of Monogatari turned on its head. 8/10

Kizumonogatari: The long-awaited and ill-fated spring break is finally unveiled, and it's so satisfying. It's great to see Araragi meet and develop his friendship with Hanekawa, and his frenemy Shinobu (aka KSAOHUB). I also appreciated the shift in tone, being much darker and more serious, reflected in a totally unique artstyle. 8/10, 9/10, and 8.5/10, respectively.

Zoku Owarimonogatari: Such a fitting end point, with a nice bow to wrap up everything in the form of crazy good character development. I know there's more that hasn't been adapted, but this would be a satisfying ending if they stopped adapting there. 9/10

I so, so wish that they'll adapt further, but even so, what a ride it's been! Next step is reading the light novels and rewatching it with character commentary (which my friends have assured me is more insane than the show). I must thank said friends for dragging me into this; it's rare for a show to hook me in the way that Monogatari did.

The Great Anime Rewatch of 2024 - Part III

Nekomonogatari: Black

First watched: January 2013, original airdate Rewatched: January 2024

I was only a few days off of watching this precisely eleven years later. Monogatari has always been a series whose strengths and weaknesses are on full display, and committing to both. For Nekomonogatari, its few episodes are filled with frivolous nonsense that feels like a waste of time: the little sister pandering, and the conversations that go in circles or last too long. And considering how Nekomonogatari was supposed to focus on Hanekawa, she’s not really in it much. Hanekawa has never been my favorite character in the series, and this didn’t help endear me to her at all. Also I’m just tired of seeing teenage anime girls being so sexualized. Finally, I had to dock points for Hanekawa idiotically stating, “People who aren’t blood related can't truly love each other.”

Owarimonogatari

I guess even my teenage self was growing weary of the Monogatari series by this point, even if I didn’t have the knowledge or vocabulary to explain why. Now I can say that its cast is growing too big and I don’t care about any of the new additions. I did not remember Sodachi and Gaen’s existences, and I still think Shinobu is overrated. I know people adore badass, buxom female characters that are trapped in a younger/more innocent form (Nel from Bleach and Moka from Rosario+Vampire immediately come to mind), but it’s never been a trope that I’ve cared for. 

I was originally going to watch Tsukimonogatari, too. But considering how far my goodwill for the series has plummeted, I’m going to end it here. As far as the Monogatari series goes, I will stick to the first two seasons. They are all I need. But it will be a long time until I go anywhere near this franchise again.

Aoi Hana

Aoi Hana was one of the few yuri anime that wasn’t exploitative, fetishy, or queerbait. Since the author of Aoi Hana is the same woman who created the whole transgender story of Wandering Son, it makes perfect sense.

As much as I want to like Aoi Hana, I just don’t find its characters memorable. (The same goes for Wandering Son.) It’s also really slow. I think it would’ve been better as a condensed film adaptation. I only lasted six episodes. However, I am interested in reading the author’s other works.

Black Lagoon & The Second Barrage

With the utter failure of my rewatch of the bloodbath that is Future Diary, will Black Lagoon fare any better?

I watched the dub because most of the English cast are all Canadian, and Canada churns out some of the best voice actors. More Canadians in anime dubbing, please?

First season - I wasn’t feeling it until episode nine when Roberta entered the story. (The whole submarine-painting escapade was the low point for me.) The comic timing as the Lagoon calmly hides under a table during a bar shoot out was so good. I also found myself enjoying a lot of the music, particularly whenever it sounded Mediterranean. Rock is way more boring than I remember (fuckin’ morality pet), Revy is more static than I remember, and Benny….exists. Dutch is cool, though. With the exception of the CG for some of the vehicles, most of the animation has also held up. The first season was just alright to me, but the English cast and localization did a lot of heavy lifting. (Docking points for having a white lady doing a bad Asian accent for Shenhua.)

Second season - So. The twins. Still the highlight. And I called it quits five episodes in. I’ve had my fill. This is not the kind of show that’s good to marathon for me—it’s better suited to a weekly popcorn flick that you forget about almost immediately after. But I’m not doing that. Again, massive credit to the the English cast and localization team for a damn good job.

Spice & Wolf

‘Animeconomics’ and Holo defined Spice & Wolf. I only recall being bored (I was only seventeen when I first watched it), and thinking Fukuyama Jun was woefully miscast as the main guy. I still feel that way, so I dared to watch this in English. Maybe listening to Holo’s economic lessons in English will help my enjoyment?

I feel like so many female voice actresses fall back upon the acting choice of high and mighty/snobbish/know it all route, and then use it for every fucking line. (Colleen Clinkenbeard, Marisha Rey, Brina Palencia.) No, it doesn’t make me like you or the character. It’s annoying, and much more intolerable in my native language than hearing it in Japanese. And Lawrence has the personality of a wet log. 

However, Spice & Wolf is most interesting when Holo and Lawrence are using their knowledge and wits in the harsh landscape of merchants and peddlers. The bits where they’re being chased and attacked? Get that shit out of there. In a story like Spice & Wolf, you know everything is going to resolve itself quickly. There’s more tension in making bad deals or getting swindled. I’d almost be better off listening to the education bits audio only, since the visuals are woefully uninteresting. I lasted six episodes and furries still make me uncomfy.

shinobu mail & mayoi hell - FUCK YEAH!!!! (owarimonogatari)

of my now three big long rant posts, i think it's very fitting that two of them are about monogatari. what can i say, it's a fucking good show.

when we last spoke, i had just started shinobu mail, which is the last "arc", if you will, of owarimonogatari I. after finishing it,

holy SHIT WAS THAT A RIDE

WHY THE FUCK WAS EPISODE THERE?

for those of you uninformed, episode was one of the 3 (4?) main villains of kizumonogatari, the (chronologically) first story in the series. he has a giant ass metal cross that he likes to throw around.

this guy.

i don't really understand why he was reintroduced at the end of shinobu mail, because he did

absolutely fucking nothing.

but it was still cool.

i honestly could have cared less about the "duel" between araragi and "the first", i didn't bother remembering his name.

but afterwards.

holy fuck.

i know that monogatari isn't really known for having a cohesive timeline, but the fact that this took place right before the ending of nekomonogatari white, which is probably my favorite ending to any monogatari arc just because of how batshit insane it was.

nisioisin is a fucking literary genius.

as for mayoi hell,

i liked it.

i must say, i was mildly disappointed at first, because the thumbnail of the episode on crunchyroll led me to believe that maybe this would be a story where hachikuji was mad at araragi for something.

i thought her sendoff at the end of mayoi jiangshi in second season was very sweet, but maybe she observed his actions afterwards and got disappointed? i dunno.

i thought it was a very nice story, though. just hachikuji and araragi walking down memory lane (figuratively and literally) while they make the trek to get him out of hell.

the reveal that teori would be the one assisting in his resurrection was an interesting and welcomed little twist. i appreciated the bit of backstory we got for him. also,

i don't know why but i always get really excited whenever he's alluded to.

moving swiftly along.

the highlight of the episode for me honestly was the little half speech/half argument between hachikuji and araragi towards the end. i thought it was really heartwarming coming from the one individual who suffered the brunt of araragi's sexual harassment.

i think i could've done without araragi dragging her back to the world of the living along with him, but it means the potential for future stories with her, so i'm okay with it.

also, seeing full-blown kiss-shot acerola-orion heart-under-blade instead of just adult shinobu for the first time in a while was very cool.

i think that'll do it for now. i look forward to finishing this series and getting onto zoku owari. i hear it's super good, and i think the concept is fucking awesome. but we'll get there when we get there.

to start off (owarimonogatari)

i guess a fitting first post would be to talk about monogatari because i'm kind of hyperfixated on it right now.

i watched through, i wouldn't say most of, but a good chunk of the monogatari series anime last year, up through the end of koimonogatari. i don't really know why i stopped, i guess i just kind of convinced myself, "oh, the last story is called hitagi end, clearly this must be the end of the series." needless to say i was very wrong. i found out about hanamonogatari and into final season from a video essay i watched a few months later, thus spoiling a LOT of stuff for myself. i was really pissed off at myself for just stopping halfway through but it was also just a hilariously stupid situation to get myself into.

so here we are about a year and a half later, and i've finally set off to finish the anime. hana and tsukimonogatari were fun stories about my two favorite characters in the whole series (kanbaru and ononoki, obviously), but what i want to get into is owarimonogatari.

(i know that koyomimonogatari comes first in the order of the light novels, and i did watch most of it before i started owari, but the anime did it weird so i decided i'd finish it later. also, from this point on, i'm gonna stop putting the monogatari at the end of titles. we know what we're talking about. moving on.)

starting owari was a very refreshing experience. i had felt that, while hana and tsuki were both really good stories, they kind of lacked the "what the fuck is happening right now" vibe that has really become synonymous with monogatari for me, which is why i was honestly very glad to sit through the first half of ougi formula feeling like i was just having words spoken at me. and, let's be real, that's kind of all ougi formula was. i think the story it told was really interesting and a great way to set up the following episodes, but there's only so much you can do with two people sitting in a classroom for 50 minutes. one reason i was excited to finally start owari was because i finally got to learn who the fuck sodachi is. being around the internet as a fan of the series, you hear a lot of people talk about how "sodachi oikura is the pinnacle of character writing". and while i do agree that she was very well written (and acted) in the short amount of screen time that she got, there's just no way she can come anywhere as close to my heart as kanbaru, i'm sorry. that's just the way things are.

i really enjoyed sodachi riddle and sodachi lost less for the titular character and more for the depth that they added to araragi as a character. to the best of my recollection at this point in time, i don't think there had been that much about his past up to this point in the story, so getting to get a glimpse through sodachi was super cool to me. i'm glad we end up getting more of sodachi in the later novel seasons past what's been licensed in the states, because i do want to see her grow as a character and as a person with the bit of closure and resolve she got through araragi and hanekawa (and ougi).

as of writing this i'm two episodes into shinobu mail, and i must say i am beside myself with joy for the direction the story seems to be taking. we've gotten a little bit of a glimpse into shinobu's past through the kizu movies and throughout second season (i am positive that it was mostly restricted to a certain arc but i cannot for the life of me figure out which it was without rewatching the whole thing, because i don't think it was shinobu time, but correct me if i'm wrong), but having her former servant (allegedly) come back from beyond the grave as an apparition has the potential to add a whole new angle to the whole thing.

side tangent. i bought volumes 17 and 18 of the bakemonogatari manga today and read through about the back half of 17 (the first half just seemed like your standard adaptation of neko black), and i was bewildered by the connection to what i'm watching in the anime. some random ghost-like apparition showing up that apparently only hachikuji can see, that looks like a suit of armor and saying it was looking for shinobu, MY GOD oh!great is on some shit and i am HERE for it.

i'm very excited to get to continue into owari, because the later stories (particularly mayoi hell) are bound to be very intriguing after all the shit that the characters have gone through at this point.
