i see the term gender horror used alot in certain parts of asoiaf fandom and i dont think i fully get it like sure theres def a rigid and violently enforced structure to gender and sexual violence is both ubiquitous and a currency but is it just those things or is there something beyond i feel like its not clicking for me
honestly im p sure it is just those things lol you got it. i think asoiaf does take the violent structure of gender and commits to exploring it to its most remote extremes, so you get stuff like sam being chained up and bathed in blood or gilly being forced into marriage with her father or however many other examples of gendering as an abusive practice (as requiring you to either do violence (masculinity) or bear violence (femininity) to participate in society). which i think is where the horror part comes from, the extremity of it? the no-holds-barred dont-look-away blood-under-everything structural inescapability of it. idk that’s how i view it at least

William Holden and Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd. (Billy Wilder, 1950)
Cast: William Holden, Gloria Swanson, Erich von Stroheim, Nancy Olson, Fred Clark, Lloyd Gough, Jack Webb, Franklyn Farnum, Larry J. Blake, Charles Dayton, Cecil B. DeMille, Hedda Hopper, Buster Keaton, Anna Q. Nilsson, H.B. Warner, Ray Evans, Jay Livingston. Screenplay: Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, D.M. Marshman Jr. Cinematography: John F. Seitz. Art direction: Hans Dreier, John Meehan. Film editing: Arthur P. Schmidt. Music: Franz Waxman.
Sunset Blvd., with the abbreviation, is the "official" title because it's the only way we see it in the credits of the film: as a shot of the street name stenciled on a curb. So from the beginning we are all in the gutter, and later we are looking at the stars -- or at least one fading star, Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). Accepting the role of Norma was a truly courageous act by Swanson: She must have known that it was the part of a lifetime, but that posterity would remember her as the campy has-been silent star, and not as the actress who had a long and distinguished career, playing both comedy and drama with equal skill, or as the spunky title character of Sadie Thompson (Raoul Walsh, 1928), which earned her her first Oscar nomination. The role of Norma Desmond might have won her an Oscar if it hadn't been for another star whose career was beginning to fade: Bette Davis, who was nominated for All About Eve (Joseph L. Mankiewicz). The conventional wisdom has it that Swanson and Davis split the votes, allowing Judy Holliday to win for Born Yesterday (George Cukor). This was also a landmark film for William Holden, who had been a sturdy but unremarkable leading man until his performance as Joe Gillis established his type: the somewhat cynical, morally compromised protagonist. It would earn him an Oscar three years later for another Wilder film, Stalag 17 (1953), and would be his stock in trade through the rest of his career, in films like Picnic (Joshua Logan, 1955), The Bridge on the River Kwai (David Lean, 1957), The Wild Bunch (Sam Peckinpah, 1969), and Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976). Holden almost didn't get to play Gillis; Montgomery Clift was offered the role but backed out. One story has it that Clift thought the role, of a man out to get the money of a woman he doesn't love, was too much like one he had just played, in The Heiress (William Wyler, 1949), while others have said that he turned it down because the story of a man's affair with an older woman would remind people of his own earlier affair with the singer Libby Holman, 16 years his senior. There is in fact an unfortunate whiff of sexism in Wilder's treatment of the age difference between Norma Desmond and Joe Gillis -- Norma is said to be 50, which was Swanson's age when the film was made, while Holden, who was 32, was made up to look even younger. Wilder, it must be observed, seemed to have no problems when the age difference was reversed, as in his 1954 film Sabrina, in which a 54-year-old Humphrey Bogart romances a 25-year-old Audrey Hepburn, or the 1957 Love in the Afternoon, with 28-year-old Hepburn and 56-year-old Gary Cooper. None of this, however, seriously detracts from the fact that Sunset Blvd. remains one of the great movies, with its its superb black-and-white cinematography by John F. Seitz. It won Oscars for the mordant screenplay by Wilder, Charles Brackett, and D.M. Marshman Jr., the art direction and set decoration of Hans Dreier, John Meehan, Sam Comer, and Ray Moyer, and the score by Franz Waxman. It's also one of the few films to receive nominations in all four acting categories: In addition to Swanson and Holden, Nancy Olson and Erich von Stroheim received supporting player nominations, but none of them won.

Well, nothing like channeling Christmas a little early . . .
Gets it all over and done with . . .
A frightfully post-post modern Christmas it is too . . .
So many twists and references . . .
I suppose I would have to watch it frequently for several decades and really do my homework to catch them all . . .
But . . .
That’s Hollywood . . .
Particularly during Christmas madness . . .
Enjoy . . .

so would it be repetitive if i ask you to do asoiaf too haha? do twilight tho 👀
ok i'll do both just for you 😉
asoiaf
otp: ya also jonsa to absolutely no one's surprise
favourite canon pairing: hmmmm tbh i don't really read much outside of my lil sphere. i love nedcat but wouldn't really engage in nedcat fanfic. i love sam/gilly but wouldn't really read for them. honestly maybe cersei/jaime bc i have read stuff with them in it and they're so fascinating to me but not in an i'm-rooting-for-them kind of way. i'm sort of similarly invested in dany/daario too. OH. robb/jeyne is very sweet to me.
worst pairing ever: sansa/tyrion. like honestly considering that sansa is my blorbo i can sort of ship her with anyone and to a degree i absolutely do but a lot of those needs to exist within certain parameters (like an au that sort of resets/reevaluates power dyanimcs) but i haven't really found a fic that has been able to compensate for that with these two in a way that feels meaningful to me. then again i also haven't gone looking!!! but ya probs them.
guilty pleasure pairing: you know i also love me some dany/sansa under the right circumstances, especially when it is toxic and complicated and messy, and even better when jon is also in the mix. dany/jon doesn't really do it for me at all but when you make it a love triangle with SANSA in the middle i am like ok tell me more!!!!! i'm listening!!!!!!!
a pairing you want to see more: honestly i know marg is also a teenage girl but i have always kind of felt that tyrion/margaery would be a way better pairing than tyrion/sansa, especially show/fanon margaery considering why don't ACTUALLY know that much about canon marg's personality. tyrion still gets to date a hot girly who is smart and clever which is what everyone who likes him wants for him but now she is actually ambitious (as opposed to just wanting to have autonomy) and could appreciate his cunning/schemes/what he could bring to the table for her. also she clearly has fewer problems getting with a lannister!!!
that pairing everyone likes but you’re like “lol no”: hmmm idk about everyone likes but i have seen enough people do ned/cersei and i just don't think it's for me. like i see what ned could bring to the table for cersei in terms of a worthy husband and i haven't engaged much with this ship so maybe i'm just missing it but to me it seems like the vibes would be like???? ned making cersei good through the power of his love??? and maybe we should just let a woman be evil 😤
favorite non-romantic pair: sansa and arya i think probably!!!!!! the stark sisters are something that is so important to me and i love getting to write scenes for them
twilight
otp: hmmm i think i gotta go with edward/bella for this one. honestly i think i was kind of sold on jacob in new moon until he kissed bella and she punched him in the face and then everyone was like "ha ha yay jacob shot his shot" and i was like EXCUSE ME???? that said back in like middle school i'm p sure i did think all the bella/edward soulmate pining stuff (the SILENCE when he LEAVES) was desperately romantic
favourite canon pairing: that said..... rosalie/emmett supremacy. rosalie is a queen. she deserves everything!!!!!
worst pairing ever: cannot express enough how completely uninvested i am in alice/jasper. he is both a) uninteresting to me and b) a confederate soldier who seemingly has never really reckoned with that!!! alice/bella much more interesting frankly. alice/ANGELA much more interesting frankly!!!!! wait i forgot about jacob/renesmee. it's jacob/renesmee.
guilty pleasure pairing: hmmmm. maybe rosalie/bella. can you imagine???????????? i can. :) bella stop talking about how hot rosalie is all of the time maybe!!!! that said i kind of also love rosalie as a bella hater lmfao so that makes it complicated for sure. but imagine bella in bella-edward levels of despair over her love for rosalie and rosalie kind of like.... i hate u but u ARE delicious. i also hate that i think that. and yet.... delicious. idk there's something here.
a pairing you want to see more: SOMEONE WHO IS WORTHY OF LEAH!!!!!! she deserves to have a girlfriend. maybe angela. maybe one of jacob's older sisters. no men allowed, thanks. she's a lesbian TO ME!!!!
that pairing everyone likes but you’re like “lol no”: it's not that i don't like carlisle/esme it's just that i am also BORED by them. maybe if they got more in canon i would care more. also i wouldn't really say this is a ship that everyone "likes" but while i can get behind an ot3 for edward/bella/jacob i am really not interestined in edward/jacob on their own
favorite non-romantic pair: seth and jacob!!! seth and bella!! seth and leah!!!! seth is baby. he too deserves the world. maybe a boyfriend. both clearwaters are gay, no further questions, your honor.

Hey sugar 💖
P + Q for the ask game?
hey 💛 thanks for the ask
Q - a ship you’ve abandoned and why
i already answered this here and basically my answer was i can’t think of one
P - invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)
i’ll use this is an opportunity to talk about my totally self indulgent klaine sunset boulevard au
im not sure if y’all are familiar with the musical but if you are then you might say sugar this is not a happy musical and also the relationship between the two main characters is extremely unhealthy why would you want that for klaine?
and then i’ll say you are correct but hear me out. it’s actually an au in which they put on a production of the musical
in case anyone is interested here is a short summary that i stole from here
Norma Desmond, a one-time famous silent-screen star finds her life down in the dumps and becomes a recluse. Her crumbling Sunset Boulevard mansion where she lives with her butler, Max, has become her self-contained world. Protected and isolated from the world by Max, who was her director and husband in the past and still loves her, Norma believes she can make a comeback.
She meets Joe Gillis, a small-time writer who wants to break into the movie industry. She has him move into her mansion so they can collaborate. But when Joe meets studio reader Betty Schaefer, Norma becomes jealous, descending further into madness.
and now here are my notes about the au i made some time ago
-it’s an enemies to lovers au because i say so
-there was no glee club (and not everyone went to mckinley)
-kurt and blaine are both at nyada (i guess nyada puts on a production of this? with an all male cast? idk i just want this to happen)
-i couldn’t help myself and there are a lot of characters in this au
-we have kurtcheltana
-they all went to mckinley together and became friends
-im pretty sure without glee all their lives were kinda bad (sorry about that)
-but now they’re all kinda in a mindset of it’s a dog eat dog world out there
-what im saying is that im making them a mean girls trio
-because they’d be terrifying and i wanna see that
-kurt and rachel both go to nyada but i’m sure santana still has her dancing lessons there and just randomly appears so people know them around there
(-because no one can stop me there’s probably some pezberry)
-enter blaine
-idk he’s a nice dude? i don’t think blaine could be too mean to anyone
-i’m pretty sure him and kurt have their rivalry over pretty much every accomplishment they could possibly achieve at nyada
-basically it’s probably just that kurt started to feel threatened, started their rivalry and blaine went along with it
-but still. its enemies to lovers. blaine can’t be too innocent here
-ive decided that he lives with tina, sam and artie (i felt bad about not taking artie to new york so he is also here)
-none of them went to mckinley
-artina is a thing here
-they went to different schools and met when they were competing against each other in one of those brainiacs things (the one from night of neglect)
-they did an enemies to lovers speedrun that was really just them competing against each other and then reluctantly acknowledging the other ones talent after the competition
-cue friendship and after that dating
-blaine still went to dalton but he knows tina (childhood friends? maybe?)
-they all go to new york together (artie does the same thing as in canon, tina does acting. but like on screen acting)
-they somehow ended up with sam as a roommate (he also does the same thing as in canon)
-there is samcedes here
-mercedes is gonna be the link that connects the kurtcheltana trio and the blaine/tina/artie/sam squad (but i think it’s gonna be a while until they figure that out)
-none of them know her before new york
-she’s also doing the same thing as in canon but i made her work at the spotlight diner as well (because she looked really good in tinas fantasy)
-kurtcheltana work there too
-the kurtcheltana trio answers to no one but mercedes jones. that’s just how it is
-elliott is gonna be here too but idk what he’s doing yet
-anyways i think i’m done with the characters
-so obviously kurt and blaine end up both getting a part in sunset boulevard
-kurt is norma (because he sang as if we never said goodbye on the show. and i wanna see him be all dramatic)
-so blaine is joe
-over the course of the play (and rehearsals and whatever) they’ll eventually become closer
-but first there’s a lot of drama and tension
-it’s great because norma and joe have a very dramatic kiss at the end of act 1
-kurt and blaine are gonna have to rehearse that scene so much
-so joe has another love interest in the play
-that could lead to some drama. maybe there’s something going on with blaine and the actor of joes love interest
(-or at the very least kurt could think so. whatever it is he’s not amused)
-idk any details but this au is dramatic (of course) but mostly just kinda fun
-a lot of friendship and character development because i love that
-and kurtcheltana as a mean girls trio

hi. Whats going on at the wall and how is jon coming back 🎤 ik it’s not really a mystery but it’s the thing i think about the most. idrc about the Mystery mysteries im very willing to be convinced on a lot of them and i think most prophecies etc have more than one meaning/subject :-)
20. A theory you pray never comes true
i’ll kms if anyone at the end is happy and married and having dragon slash wolf babies i dont care i dont careeeeee i dont CARE i want everyone to be miserable/alone/dead except for sam and gilly and bran… and sansa and theon and bri ok ok well i just need it to be actually bittersweet not fake bittersweet Whatever.
31. Who would you elevate to a POV character?

35. A character you just don’t get the hype of
i dont care for most historical figures. like i dont know them

City Lights Bookstore’s Antiracist Reading List | UPDATED
Human creativity is integral to revolutionary resistance—the urgent plea, the silenced cry, the righteous rage. It is imperative that we educate and illuminate ourselves to deepen our commitment to justice and equity for Black people and all people of color, and to pave the way for radical systemic change.

"Walkin 'the doggos.
