First Time Playing Chrono Trigger

Silver Sword, AKA "Lode Sword," Worth-it-ness Report

I spent roughly 1.5 hours getting the Silver Sword from the fair at the beginning of Chrono Trigger.

Approximately 3 hours into the game, I encountered a Silver Sword inside a chest, and sold it for 2,000 gold, as Frog/Glenn — a fellow blade wielder — could not equip it as I had hoped. I was also able to sell the Iron Blade and Steel Blade I found, as they were beneath the Silver Sword.

At 5.2 hours in, I have found and equipped the Thunder Blade. The Thunder Blade raises Chrono's attack higher than the Silver Sword, though it remains to be seen whether elemental resistances will make re-equipping the Silver Sword beneficial for some fights.

Something Kenna and I discovered late last night is that my method of obtaining points for the fair — grinding against Gato — raised Chrono's level such that I will miss out on one of the game's 17 hidden Magic Tabs/Capsules, which allow me to permanently improve a character's magic stat. This Magic Tab is acquired by defeating frog-form Spekkio in battle at the End of Time.

Frog-form Spekkio only appears when Chrono is level nine or lower, and by the time I had learned of his existence, Chrono was five experience points away from level nine. Due to experience gained from unavoidable fights, Chrono has already reached level 10 at the time of this report. Unfortunately, the End of Time has not been an accessible area as of yet, so Frog-form Spekkio and his Magic Tab/Capsule are out of reach during this playthrough.

Thankfully, my concern that over-leveling early on might make the rest of the game trivial has not been correct, as the game offers ample opportunity to skip enemy encounters and the experience they provide. When I do fight, I find there is still risk of characters being knocked out, so combat is not mindless as long as I aim to avoid that outcome.

Overall, I agree with @verdictvelvet that skipping the first Silver Sword is most likely the best course of action. While selling the duplicate Silver Sword for 2,000 gold offers a good amount to put towards supplies and equipment upgrades early on, a player who takes the time to go through most of the games encounters and spend time looking for treasure chests is unlikely to be strapped for gold in a manner that makes selling the second Silver Sword worthwhile. The encounters prior to finding the second Silver Sword also are not difficult enough to require the additional attack the first Silver Sword provides, though it is unclear whether the lack of challenge throughout those encounters results from them being part of an easy early game scenario or from Chrono being over leveled due to the Gato grinding method. My belief is that both are likely true; however, were I to grind purely for the sake of leveling, I could do so more quickly against the stronger enemies that appear following the initial fair scenario where the Silver Sword is first attainable.

There's also a discussion to be had regarding the early Silver Sword acquisition encouraging behaviors that negatively impact Chrono during the trial sequence, namely:

1. Stealing the market stall fellow's lunch to restore health between Gato fights, and

2. Interacting with the swordsmith more frequently, which increases the likelihood you may ask Marle to sell her pendant, an act construed by the Chancellor as an attempt to benefit from her wealth.

Despite reuniting the little girl with her cat, I ended up receiving no care package at all during the prison scenario due to Chrono's poor character making the guilty verdict very one-sided, meaning I missed out on numerous potions and ethers.

On a second playthrough, I would not hesitate to skip the first Silver Sword. However, I believe the time spent earning it in this playthrough was valuable due to the insight I have gained since.

(Notes: I'm aware that grinding silver points to exchange for gold is not the only means of earning money during the initial fair scenario. However, encounters in Guardia Forest took longer than fighting Gato, rewarded fewer experience points, and a mere 48 gold, whereas the 15 silver points earned per Gato fight exchange for 75 gold. The encounters could potentially result in item drops I could sell, but that's too much chance, in my opinion, and potions only resale for 25 gold anyway. I also made sure to collect the 200 gold allowance from Chrono's mom. One thing I would do differently if I decided to grind for the Silver Sword again: I spent Chrono's starting money on gear to reduce damage taken and increase damage dealt during the Gato fight, hoping to decrease time spent stealing the stall operator's lunch to heal. However, knowing now how easy it becomes to quickly defeat Gato just as a result of leveling up, I likely would not purchase defensive gear before obtaining the Silver Sword and would simply make more frequent use of the stolen lunch.)

So I saw this on my dash and I had to dig a few articles deep to actually get an explanation of what’s going on.** Solar energy generation, storage, and conversion is something I’ve been studying since about 2015 as a researcher, so I’m always really curious what’s actually new about these articles.

Since even before my time, our field has been pretty adamant that the most important problem we face to a green energy future is how do we store our green energy. We can make tons of it! In fact, TOO MUCH for us to use. We just have no way of storing and delivering it once we’ve made it. People have been working on batteries (solid-state, redox flow...), chemical energy storage (use sunlight to make a chemical reaction that produces a fuel like hydrogen gas, petroleum, methane...), and many other ways to store solar energy for decades and decades.

Besides the fact this is just like, what I do for a job and enjoy thinking about it, figuring out what actual tech is being lauded as Good News was important to me. I (and you) need to know whether this is revolutionary phenomenal more hope for the future kind of good news, or if it was oh hey, this thing we’ve been working on for 20-30 years is finally reaching an almost-market-ready stage (and TLDR: it’s the latter).

So what makes this one newsworthy?

The device developed at Chalmers* is a form of chemical energy storage. Instead of making a fuel to use and burn, the chemical they shine light on purely stores energy, and releases energy. They have recently managed to package it into a neat little chip that takes sunlight, stores it, and then on-demand returns it as electricity that we can use.

The chemical they’ve used on this chip can exist in two differently shaped forms. And it can change between those forms with a little bit of energy. The researchers determined that the energy requirements for that transformation is small enough that sunlight can perform it.

So they shine light on one form of the molecule and it turns into the other; it takes the solar energy and “stores” it by resting in that new shape. It’s happy to sit there until they tell it to go back.

When it goes back, it “returns” the initial energy by giving away heat.

They’ve been able to turn heat into electricity somewhat efficiently.

The limitations of this kind of device are:

How much energy you can store is dependent on how many molecules you have on your chip (or in your tub, if you’re doing it in liquid form).

How efficiently you can turn that heat into electricity is a developing technology and they have room to go.

This specific set up requires an *additional chemical*, a catalyst (unsung heroes in most of the press) to help turn the transformed molecule BACK into its original form, the important step to deliver energy back to us! Doing this in liquid form currently requires organic solvents (in everything in life, we want to use water instead of organic solvents, if possible).

Why am I explaining all of this?

I think it’s important for non scientists, particularly those who care about the climate crisis, to have this context. This technology is not a one-off moonshot; this technology is not our best hope; this technology is not the Answer to all our problems; this technology is not unique. The concept itself is also not new. It is not even “in its early stages” as far as research goes. This is a fairly well-developed device and system they are publicizing. It IS in its early stages of implementation.

This is the pace of science. And that should actually give you hope.

It means that for every one individual piece of news you hear like this, there are hundreds of different technologies also being developed, also being worked on, also close to implementation, too. People have been working on these problems, caring about these problems, UNDERSTANDING these problems, for decades even before the public ever caught up. There is progress being made and hope to be had, and nihilism about the climate, about whether The Big Feds and Corporations Are Paying Attention, is both inaccurate and counterproductive.

It IS exciting that this one is working to the degree it is. It IS going to be a useful tool in adapting to our energy needs and making a green future possible. And to me, as someone who’s been watching this field, it’s really exciting and satisfying to know that hey, all this hard work we’ve done uncovering the different pieces of this puzzle..? we’re starting to actually PUT THE PIECES TOGETHER in a functioning way now.

Sometimes even as a scientist, even as someone who understands the pace of research, it can be hard to feel like there’s ever going to be the point where things start working. We’ve been pursuing photoisomerization as energy storage for ages and ages, but it’s never been efficient enough, or we’ve never had a way to release the energy once it’s been stored, or all these other problems. But we’re finally at a point where grit, determination, persistence, and hope, have gotten us through the worst of those issues and gotten some solid footing. And that’s really exciting

The European Commission proposed adding almost 200 additional individuals and entities to the EU sanctions list.

“This list covers key figures in Russia's brutal and deliberate missile strikes against civilians, in the kidnapping of Ukrainian children to Russia, and in the theft of Ukrainian agricultural products,” von der Leyen said.

In addition, the European Commission proposed sanctioning three additional Russian banks, including a full transaction ban on the Russian Regional Development Bank, to further paralyze Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's cash cows.

Furthermore, the European Commission wants to impose new export controls and restrictions, particularly for dual-use goods, including chemicals, nerve agents, electronics, and IT components that could be used by the Russian war machine.

Von der Leyen said that the commission would cut Russia's access to all sorts of drones and unmanned aerial vehicles, banning the direct exports of drone engines to Russia and the export to any third countries, such as Iran, which could supply drones to Russia.

“We will also target the Russian propaganda machine by taking four additional channels off the air and all other distribution platforms,” she said.

Von der Leyen said that the European Commission had proposed further economic measures against the Russian energy and mining sector, including a ban on new mining investments in Russia.

This package comes on top of the EU import ban on Russian seaborne oil that came into force on Dec. 5.

“Russia is trying to “freeze” the war in Ukraine to prepare for “a bigger offensive next spring,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Dec. 7.

“What we see now is Russia actually trying to have some kind of ‘freeze’ of this war at least for a short period of time so they can regroup, repair, recover,” Stoltenberg said during a conference hosted by the Financial Times.

The NATO chief’s assessment comes nearly a month after Russia suffered a humiliating defeat in southern Ukraine, where it was forced to withdraw from the only regional capital, Kherson, that it had captured since the February invasion.

For the past five months, Russia has failed to achieve any major victory in Ukraine despite its high casualty rate. The current epicenter of the battle is in the Bakhmut sector in the eastern Donetsk Oblast as Russian troops mass to encircle and capture the strategically insignificant city.

Ukraine’s Eastern Military Command spokesman Serhiy Cherevaty claimed on Dec. 4 that Russia was losing 50-100 soldiers daily in the Bakhmut area, with a similar injury rate. The loss of Ukrainian troops, however, is also assumed to be high.

At the Financial Times Global Boardroom conference on Dec. 7, Stoltenberg also said that he had "no more information" about Moscow’s accusations of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian military airbases earlier this week.

The alleged Ukrainian drone attacks occurred on Dec. 5 when explosions were reported at two airbases 500-700 kilometers deep inside Russia, hinting at Kyiv’s ability to strike targets at such distances.

Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Stoltenberg elaborated without pointing fingers that it’s important to “understand this in the wider context,” where Russia is launching daily attacks on critical infrastructure in Ukrainian cities.

“What Russia tries to do is to weaponize winter, to deprive civilian Ukrainians of water, of electricity, of heating, when they're now going into winter,” Stoltenberg said.

“Ukraine has the right to defend itself against these kinds of attacks.”

Earlier on Dec. 6, U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that Washington was not “enabling” or “encouraging” Ukraine to attack targets inside Russia.

Asked about the possibility of peace agreements, Stoltenberg said that “Russia has shown no sign of engaging in negotiations which are respecting the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” but insisted that it was not up to Brussels to decide.

“It has to be Ukraine that decides when and the conditions for negotiations,” he told at the event.

Back in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled that he was preparing for a prolonged war, acknowledging that “this might be a long process.”

The Department of Homeland Security today issued a bulletin warning, “Lone offenders and small groups motivated by a range of ideological beliefs and personal grievances continue to pose a persistent and lethal threat to the Homeland.” Both domestic extremists and foreign terrorists are using online extremist messaging and calls for violence to motivate supporters to launch attacks. Individuals upset about the 2024 election and new laws or court decisions might attack “US critical infrastructure, faith-based institutions, individuals or events associated with the LGBTQIA+ community, schools, racial and ethnic minorities, and government facilities and personnel, including law enforcement.” The advisory is in force for six months. The announcement warned that a key factor in potential violence is “perceptions of the 2024 general election cycle,” a reference to disinformation suggesting that U.S. elections are rigged. This false allegation is a staple of former president Trump’s political messaging. We’re right back to the same fight we saw over McCarthy’s speakership, where extremists held the trump cards. “We’re not going to default,” McCarthy insisted. In contrast, all the House Democrats have backed a discharge petition that would force a bill to increase the debt ceiling to the floor, but they need five Republicans to sign on to it. So far, no Republican has publicly stepped up. Florida governor Ron DeSantis’s announcement today that he is running for president was awkward. He made the announcement on Twitter, whose owner, Elon Musk, has said he supports DeSantis, but the technology didn’t work and Twitter crashed repeatedly, leaving DeSantis’s audience unimpressed. Since the Uvalde murders, Biden said, the U.S. has experienced 650 mass shootings and well over 40,000 deaths from gun violence. Guns are the top killers of children in the U.S. Biden called for a ban on AR-15-type firearms and high-capacity magazines, and for the establishment of universal background checks, national red-flag laws, required safe storage of firearms, and an end to the immunity from liability that gun manufacturers enjoy. Like Captain Hook and his temporal detectable crocodile, this graph haunts me and I hear a ticking clock when I open it.

Way back in the fall of 2020, three months before the election, the events in MAGA world were getting complex. I opened Maltego, pasted in a URL, used the Named Entity Recognition transform that accesses IBM’s Watson, and the initial graph filled with a dozen names. Now a thousand days have elapsed, there are 1,088 URLs in there, and an astonishing 2,908 names. The 5,672 entities and 13,011 links connecting them have become a sort of Rosetta stone, a thing that gets opened when reporters I know are fact checking complex flows of events.

But there’s trouble here. Maltego is a Java application and that graph is enormous. When you give Java more than 31 gigabytes of memory it switches to using 64 bit pointers and your actual usable space yield declines. If you need more than 31 gig, the next sensible number is not 32, it’s 49. A couple months ago I upped the allocated memory to 64 gig and that helped for a while. Now it really does need 80 gig if I’m going to work with that graph and pull a slice of it out in order to share with someone else.

There are other subtle problems that can’t easily be depicted in a screen shot. Twenty one Date/Time entities have crept into the graph.

And this is the real circus. There are 189 events … and an event is a child entity of … Location. They have timestamps as an internal attribute, but Maltego doesn’t really have any tools to handle temporal data.

This situation is untenable. That graph won’t work reliably on my desktop and only hardcore gamers have more capability than my setup. There are four other tools I use that can handle data relationships:

Gephi can handle a quarter million nodes in a graph but it lacks features for handling geospatial, temporal, or diverse entity data.

Graphistry is a web accessible GPU driven commercial alternative to Gephi, but with similar constraints on data types.

Tulip is an intriguing Gephi competitor, but more a framework for doing serious artwork with smaller datasets and richer network layout needs.

And that leaves Sentinel Visualizer. This is a full featured link analysis package meant for corporate fraud investigation, law enforcement, and intelligence activities. It’s Windows only, which pains me a bit, as I changed careers twenty five years ago to get out from under Microsoft’s marketing weasel driven chaos. But I think I’ve got something workable here:

So that’s Windows 10, and I’ve got it treed in a VirtualBox VM. I gave it 40 gig of memory and ten of twelve cores. I spent an evening Googling and fiddling with virtualization settings and I’ve finally got something usable in terms of speed.

Every other OS you can install in a VM, give it some resources, and it’ll just run. Windows seems to need the Guest Additions installed, a couple reboots, cursing in English and one other optional language of your choice, another install of Guest Additions, and then giving up and walking away in disgust overnight. Complete this ritual and you’ll be left with an operational system.

If this were an actual physical system we would not be having this conversation. Microsoft’s utter disrespect for the value of my time in the 1990s was intolerable and in this area I have not mellowed with age. But with a Linux host and VMware I can do essentially instant backup and restore using the ZFS snapshot feature and it’s possible to export the machine in OVA format as an offline backup.

And that's the first step data wise. I fed it an export of names, then some URLs. I'm puzzling over how to use Maltego's internal UUID with Sentinel Visualizer, without smearing an endless blur of visually very similar strings all over the display.

I have a couple projects in mind with this:

The MAGA world meltdown graph has to be either moved or abandoned.

There are a LOT of interesting datasets from Ukraine that involve both geospatial and temporal data.

There are famous historical battles that are well documented enough to make for a nice graph, but I've yet to see a source that offers both geospatial and temporal data in tabular form.

So that's the direction we're headed for the second half of 2023. If I get something worthwhile put together, I will make it available for use with Sentinel Visualizer Reader.

Continued support to Ukraine and the bloc's strategic position against China dominated discussions among EU leaders at the second day of a summit on Friday.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU is set to provide Ukraine with up to €18 billion in financial assistance throughout 2023 to cover the basic budgetary needs of the war-torn country.

"It is very important for Ukraine to have a predictable and stable flow of income," von der Leyen said at the end of two-day meeting of EU leaders in Brussels.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this month his country will need around $55 billion (€56 billion) to sustain next year's budget deficit and repair damaged infrastructure.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has estimated that, for 2023, Ukraine will need between €3 billion to €4 billion in foreign aid on a monthly basis to keep its public services running against the backdrop of Russia's invasion.

The money is expected to come from the EU, the United States, the United Kingdom and other Western countries, together with international financial institutions.

According to Ursula von der Leyen, the EU aims to contribute with €1.5 billion a month, for a total of €18 billion in 2023. The Commission president did not unveil further details and said work on the future package was still in early stages.

"We have tasked the finance ministers to develop the appropriate mechanism, but it was important to give this signal to Ukraine that we very well know how important this reliable flow of income is," von der Leyen told reporters.

Until now, the bloc had committed to deliver €9 billion for Ukraine in exceptional loans to help the country support its 2022 budget. The money is being raised by the Commission on international markets and then covered with guarantees using the EU's common budget and national contributions.

But the release of this macro-financial assistance has been bogged down by discussions between member states, some of whom argue the money should be given in the form of grants, rather than loans.

So far, only €3 billion have reached Kyiv, in addition to a separate €1.2 billion loan, for a total of €4.2 billion.

In a virtual address to EU leaders, President Zelenskyy criticised the delay of the remaining €6 billion.

"Thank you for the funds that have already been allocated, but a decision has not yet been made on the remaining €6 billion from this package, which is critically needed this year," Zelenskyy said on Thursday.

"And it is in your power to reach a principled agreement on the provision of this assistance to our state today already."

Europe cannot be 'naive' toward China

The other main topic of the day for EU leaders was China. 

Despite occupying just a single-line in the nine-page conclusions issued at the end of summit, the discussion among leaders took three hours and was described by French President Emmanuel Macron as "very intense".

"What emerged from these three hours of discussions is now the unanimity on the need to have a European strategic autonomy," Macron told reporters.

"We need strategic autonomy and our policy, particularly with regard to China, cannot be dictated by anyone, anymore than it can be part of a form of technological dependence on metals and rare earths," he added.

The exchange behind closed doors came just days after Xi Jinping secured an unprecedented third term at the helm of the country and as concerns over China's recent aggressive behaviour or rhetoric towards Hong Kong and Taiwan mount.

For European leaders, it was also an opportunity to refine their joint positions ahead of an EU-ASEAN summit in mid-December.

Charles Michel said the discussions showed that "there is a very, very strong, very, very consensual, very, very convergent conviction that was expressed by all of the 27 European leaders on the importance of really developing this strategic autonomy, this ability to be less dependent from a strategic point of view, to have more independence on a strategic level, but also to strengthen and diversify our partnerships with the rest of the world."

"It is a debate that has shown our willingness not to be naive but also not to follow a logic of systematic confrontation," the European Council president added.

'Europe has historically made a mistake'

The COVID-19 crisis and Russia's illegal war in Ukraine have starkly exposed the bloc's dependence on both countries for its energy needs.

Pre-war, the vast majority of European fossil fuel imports came from Russia while China dominates international supply chains when it comes to the mining and refining of rare earth materials, including lithium.

Other issues with China for Europe include respect of human rights, the lack of an even playing field -- access to the Chinese market is restricted and highly dependent on the transfer of technology and know how from the European side -- as well as blurry lines between companies and the state.

There is also growing concern that Chinese technology giants including Huawei -- which supplies 5G infrastructure -- have close ties with the country's intelligence services and over Chinese investments in European infrastructure.

This is particularly important as EU capitals wrestle with the question of how to ensure the protection of critical infrastructure following the suspected sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline and the German rail network in recent weeks.

Like Michel, Macron also described Europe's past strategy towards China as "naive" and said that when it comes to critical infrastructures, "Europe has historically made a mistake."

"During the financial crisis, we pushed several member states in difficult situations in terms of their public finances to sell off infrastructures without any European buyers. And so, on many of these critical infrastructures, it was Chinese players who came to buy.

"Can we blame the authorities for selling ports to electricity, gas or other operators? Can we blame the Chinese? No. We were naive because we considered that, basically, there was a matter of public finance to be settled, that Europe was an open supermarket," he added.

The EU has reinforced its directive on the protection of critical infrastructure with member states encouraged to roll out stress tests as quickly as possible and the Commission calling for more coordination between countries as these infrastructures are increasingly cross-border.

'It is in their interest that we are divided'

Some smaller member states have meanwhile called for more unity when it comes to China and to ensure geopolitical concerns trump commercial matters as Germany's Olaf Scholz prepared to travel Beijing next month.

Germany is China's biggest European trade partner.

"China is best dealt with when we are 27, not when we are one against one and one vis a vis China," Latvia Prime Minister Arturs Kariņš stressed.

His Estonia counterpart Kaja Kallas said that "with China, it's the same as with Russia."

"It is in their interest that we are divided. It's in our interests that we are united and talk with one voice. And this is extremely important for small countries who don't have that power to have that separate relationship."

"It's also very important that we don't have any separate deals made with China, because that would mean that we are weaker as a union," she emphasised.

The second day of the European Council in Brussels started after a very short night for leaders who agreed at around 2am to call on the Commission to urgently move forward with concrete measures to curb the price of gas and electricity.
