Our Flag Means Death - “An Ever-Fixed Mark” (Rated PG13)
Summary: Stede and Edward celebrate Stede's birthday at Stede's former home with his "widow", Doug, and Stede's children. Edward ends up playing babysitter when Stede has to help Mary and Doug with some estate business. And while they do, Edward confides in Stede's daughter that he wants to get Stede something for his birthday that matters. So she offers to teach him to read... (3707 words)
Read on AO3.
"What do you think? You could wear your hair like this for Father's party," Alma says, sticking a silver hand mirror in Edward's face. He tilts his head side to side to get a better look at his hair and beard, which Stede's daughter has been braiding for the better part of an hour. The braids don't lay flat, and they're not straight, but they're not half bad. She secured the ends with brightly colored ribbon and that, of course, is the only thing that matters.
Or so she said when they started.
"Excellent," Edward says. "Pink always was my color."
Alma giggles. "You said that about the purple. And the white."
"What can I say? I look good in every color."
"But you're Blackbeard, aren't you?" Louis asks from his place on the floor, where he has been practicing his own braiding on a soft, yarn-haired doll. "Shouldn't you wear the black ribbons?"
"Nah. I've spent far too much of my life wearing black. I'm not a damned undertaker. Put me down for all the colors of the rainbow like your father wears, in his fancy suits and linens."
"Mr. Teach? Are you really the deadliest pirate that's ever lived?" The boy at Edward's feet has a book on pirates open by his knee. He's referring to it - looking from it to the man sitting patiently in one of his mother's wooden chairs and having his salt-and-pepper hair braided. Edward cranes his head for a better look and notices the page he's turned to - the same page Stede showed him in the book on board the Revenge.
A picture of himself carrying too many pistols and looking positively dreadful.
Edward sighs. "That's what they tell me."
"You don't look deadly," Alma remarks.
"Isn't that a good thing? Would you want to be braiding the hair of a bloodthirsty murderer?"
"Honestly?"
Edward shoots Alma a look. She stares back at him mischievously, holding his gaze without an inch of fear. Whether or not that fearlessness comes from the knowledge that her father owns his treacherous heart, he doesn't know, but it's quite admirable for a child her age. To his knowledge, parents still use horror stories about him to scare their children into submission.
"You'd better do your chores, or we'll sell you to Blackbeard!"
"Stay in bed. Blackbeard steals children who stay up past eight!"
"Eat all your veg. Disobedient children end up on Blackbeard's crew!"
That sort of thing.
Edward wonders how many brats do most children think he has running about his ship.
Edward has no idea what is going on in Alma's brain. She has probably been fed the same stories her father had before he went to sea.
Before he and Blackbeard ever met.
But from the twist of her lips, she can't be thinking anything good.
"Hmm, maybe not," he decides.
"May I ask you a question?" Alma asks, collecting up her remaining ribbons and folding them carefully.
"You may."
"Do you love Father?"
Surprise pales Edward's cheeks, but he doesn't pause for thought. He wouldn't want Stede's children, of all people, to think him insincere. "I do."
"Do you love him the way Mother loves Doug?" Louis asks.
"I don't know. I don't know how your mother loves Doug. But I would say it's probably close, yeah."
"Mummy loves Doug with lots of hugging, and kissing, and sending us to bed early. Do you love Father like that?" Louis presses.
Edward looks at the boy. His mouth goes dry, and he swallows hard. "Next question."
"Are you going to marry Father?" Alma continues.
"You two ask a lot of questions."
"We're children. That's what we do."
"I wouldn't know. I don't spend too much time around children in my line of work."
"Father should have warned you."
"He might have."
"You avoid a lot of questions."
"Yes, well, your father should have warned you."
Alma shakes her head at his ridiculous response but moves on regardless. "If you do marry Father, are you two going to keep being pirates?"
"Your mother lets you run around the house in trousers? Like a hooligan?" Edward asks, hoping to divert her line of questioning.
"Yes," Alma says proudly.
Edward nods in approval. "Good. She's raising you right."
"Would you like to see what I've made Father for his birthday?"
"If you would like to show me."
"I would."
Edward watches Alma skip to the corner of the room. He doesn't know if she got the hint that her queries wandered into uncomfortable territory or if his dodging simply bored her. He's grateful either way for the change of subject.
Alma pauses, double checking that her mother, father, and Doug haven't returned yet from their business. When quiet meets her ears, she reaches beneath a thick piece of cloth and pulls out a canvas. She carries it over to Edward and holds it up.
It's a painting of a ship out at sea on a calm, sunny day.
A ship he assumes is the Revenge.
"Did you do this?" he asks, astonished at the girl's talent.
"I did."
"It's lovely," he says, leaning forward to examine every inch of the painting. "You're very talented."
Her cheeks go rosy. "Thank you. Mother taught me."
"Have you ever seen your father's ship?"
"No. But when I dreamt about him sailing the high seas, this is how I pictured it."
Edward's heart clenches hearing that. If nothing else went right with Stede's family, his children love him, and he loves them. To think of this young girl lying in bed at night, wondering where her father is, whether or not he's safe or alive...
Everything turned out all right in the end, but it's still heartbreaking.
Stede did what was right by him when he left his family. Edward, of all people, has no right to judge. Still, he gave up a great deal. And innocent people were affected.
"You are definitely your father's daughter," Edward says, focused on the painting as if the ship is a long-lost love, "because you got it just right."
"What are you getting Father for his birthday, Mr. Teach?" Louis asks as Alma stows her present away.
"I commissioned a portrait from your mother. Of me. For your father's quarters on the ship. But, to be honest, I was hoping to get him something else. Something a little more personal."
"More personal than a painting of your face?" Alma asks.
Louis giggles. Edward pulls a face. And though Alma smirks, she becomes pensive, chewing her lower lip in thought. "Mr. Teach, may I ask you a question?"
"Again with the questions," he teases.
"You don't have to answer if it makes you uncomfortable."
Can't be more uncomfortable than the marriage one. "Let's hear it."
"Can you read?"
This question Edward isn't quick to answer. "Why do you ask?"
"You and Father have been here for three days so far, and I never see you read. When Father wants to point out a passage, he doesn't hand you the book. He reads it out loud to you. He never did that with Mum. Or us."
Edward nods, itching to his bones to talk about something else, anything else: ribbons, fashion...would this be a good time for that eye-gouging anecdote? But he and Stede are set to stay for the remainder of the week, so he won't be able to avoid the subject for long.
"You're very observant," he says. "No. I'm not the best reader. I've never had the opportunity to learn."
"Reading is Father's favorite pastime."
"Aside from being a pirate, it's his favorite thing on the planet!" Louis chirps.
"I think if you learned, it could be something you could share. Something important to him."
Edward is already shaking his head before he answers. He feels like a coward for that. "I don't know that I could learn in time."
"You don't have to learn to read everything. Learn one thing, and with practice, the rest will come."
"But how would I learn? I want it to be a surprise, so your father can't teach me. And I don't think your mother has the time."
"I can teach you!" Alma says excitedly.
"And me!" Louis adds, displeased at not being included in this conversation. Making surprise plans with a dangerous brigand? This is the best day of his life!
Edward narrows his eyes at the two. "Are you qualified to teach?"
Alma tuts. "Of course, we are. We've been reading for ages."
"Ages," Louis repeats.
Edward snorts. Ages. How old are these two? Nine? Twelve at most? What do they know from ages? But he can't discount them. They're willing to help him. That has to count for something. "Do you have any recommendations? Something your father would like? Preferably something short?"
"Absolutely." Alma walks over to the bookcase against the wall. With barely a search, she picks out a leather-bound book and brings it back. "The surefire way to my father's heart," she says, holding the book out to him. "Shakespeare."
***
Edward and the children decide on a sonnet. Sonnets are relatively short and sweet. It shouldn't be too much trouble for Edward to learn. But they don't start on it right away.
Alma insists they begin with the basics.
Edward spends the afternoon with Alma and Louis, reciting catchy rhymes about vowels and another about consonants in an attempt to build the foundation necessary for learning one sonnet. Edward knows that, if he's not careful, he's going to find himself mindlessly repeating these rhymes around the ship.
If Lucius hears him, he will never live it down.
Alma, God bless her, has the patience of a saint - bizarre considering her hot-headed parents.
Edward feels silly being taught by children, especially when Alma recommends going back a step and brings out a primer for beginners. It's even more humbling when she explains that this is the first book she learned to read.
At the age of four.
Louis, who spent the past fifteen minutes keeping watch in the hall, comes running in, waving his arms. "Father's coming!"
"Quick! Hide this!" Alma shoves the Shakespeare book at Edward. He tucks it beneath his waistcoat for safekeeping. "Now tie us up!" Alma grabs her jump rope and thrusts that at him as well. "We'll tell him we were playing pirates."
"No. Tie me up." Ed yanks the rope from the girl's hands and gets started, whipping it around his waist and the chair.
Alma stares at him, offended by the suggestion. "Why?"
"Then your father will have to rescue me."
Alma watches Edward wrap the rope around his torso, shaking her head. "Adults are so strange."
"Hey! Tying someone up was your idea!"
Alma thinks on that, watching Edward till he's nearly done, then shrugs. "Fair point."
"Children!" they hear Stede call as Alma knots the ends. "Edward! Where are you? I hope we weren't gone too lo---" Stede gasps when he sees his son and daughter, whooping and hollering as they race around a bound Edward struggling to be free, his hair and beard done up entirely in pink ribbons. Stede chuckles to himself at Edward playing the damsel in distress, pretty braids and all. But he doesn't like his children taking advantage of him. "Alma! Louis! What are you doing?"
"Nothing, Father!" Alma protests but doesn't cease her skipping.
"He asked us to do it!" Louis admits. His mother always did say honesty is the best policy. Besides, it's highly unlikely their father will believe him anyhow.
"Untie him now!" Stede demands.
Alma stops behind Edward. She takes the ends of the ropes in her hands and slowly makes another loop, adding to a line of knots. "You're the pirate, Father," she challenges, her voice steeped in cheek. "Why don't you save him?" Then she pulls the ends tight. As her father sputters, she whispers beneath her breath, "Good luck, Mr. Teach."
"Thanks," Edward whispers back.
Stede rushes for them, but Alma grabs her brother's hand and drags him away.
"What on Earth happened here?" Stede asks, fiddling with the rope. There are nine knots total, pulled hard as rocks.
"Your rugrats got the drop on me," Edward explains. "One minute, I was choosing ribbon colors. The next, they were lashing me to this chair."
Stede digs his fingernails into the knots, trying to loosen them, but they won't give. "You know what they say. Never turn your back on children or the ocean."
"Yes, well, the ocean's a bit more predictable."
Stede fumbles with the knots some more, but they refuse to budge. Not interested in spending the remainder of their afternoon on this task, he reaches beneath his waistcoat and pulls a knife from - where? Edward has no idea. He didn't know Stede kept a knife on his person. Edward, in his borrowed suit, doesn't have one on him.
He is equal parts turned on and jealous.
Stede cuts through the rope, slicing it easily. "There you are." He twirls the knife once, then returns it to its hiding place. He unwraps Edward and tosses the rope aside. It's not until he finishes that he catches Edward staring. "What? What's wrong?"
Edward looks at the knife - or, more accurately, where Stede keeps it - then back at Stede. He grins, his brain crowded by thoughts of sending the children to bed early. "That was hot."
***
Over the next three days, Edward, Alma, and Louis steal away to the playroom while Stede helps Mary and Doug iron out estate business. Even with hours of tutoring under his belt, Edward doesn't feel this is getting any easier. They've gone over the sonnet so many times, he is memorizing it more than reading. But that's not his fault.
It's Shakespeare's.
What language was the man writing in any way?
Of course, he'd be the favorite author of a man who speaks ecclesiastical Latin.
They switch to a new sonnet and give it another go. But for all of Alma's sounding out and encouragement, Edward begins to wonder whether or not he has bitten off more than he can chew.
He still has time to buy something for Stede. Something extravagant, even if not entirely personal.
The riches Edward has accumulated rival Stede's. But Stede's material possessions outnumber Edward's by fifty to one. This man has never said no to anything. Edward can respect that. But it makes Stede impossible to shop for. Ed doesn't want to give Stede something he could buy for himself. He wants to give him something with meaning.
Something that matters.
Reading matters to Stede. Stede would appreciate being read to every so often. Wouldn't he? When they're underway, and the only other person who can read on the ship is Lucius? Alma thinks so. And she should know. He can only take her word for it and hope for the best.
The night before Stede's party, Edward feels himself cracking. Alma had suggested Edward read the poem to Stede at the party during the opening of the presents, but he's not sure he can. It's one thing to fail in front of Alma and Louis. He may even be okay failing in front of Stede. But add Mary and Doug and the few other people who know Stede isn't actually dead to the mix, and Edward feels his heart preparing to tear out of his body and make a grand escape.
If he doesn't do this now, in private, he is going to pack his things, go back to the ship, and stay there till the party blows over.
The party Stede was so looking forward to, he literally rose from the grave for a week to attend.
"I'm about ready to pack it in for the night," Stede says, dropping onto his side of the bed with a stretch. "It's been such a long day, dealing with probates and what not. How about you?"
"Yeah," a distracted Ed agrees. "Probates and...long day."
Stede cuts off a yawn and appraises him curiously. "I cannot thank you enough for helping out with Alma and Louis while Mary and I got this done. They are so taken by you."
"They're good kids. They'd make good pirates."
Stede raises a brow. That's an...odd remark. "Indeed. Well, is there anything you'd like to do before we call it a night?" he asks suggestively. With Edward's nerves performing a jig in his stomach, he doesn't catch on. He's been chewing on his inside cheek for so long that he nearly bites straight through it.
If he's going to do this, he'd better do it now before he fully chickens out.
Or before he pierces his face.
"Can we, maybe, do a bit of reading?" he asks, voice shaking.
"Sure. Any requests?"
"I thought, being your birthday, we could do one of your favorites. A sonnet thing. By that William guy."
"One of Shakespeare's Sonnets? That sounds pleasant." Stede keeps a volume of Shakespeare's works on his bedside table, so Edward's sonnet is within arm's reach.
It's now or never.
Stede grabs the book and opens it, but Edward takes it from him.
"May I?"
"Of course," Stede says, fascinated by whatever is happening at this moment. It's nice to see Edward taking an interest in the written word, considering his deplorable treatment of books in the past.
Edward flips through the pages, searching for the sonnet he wants. They're numbered. All he has to do is find the right number. He's good with numbers. "116...116...116..." he mumbles, panicking when he doesn't see it. What if this volume doesn't have it? That can't be possible. He's heard Stede read it a dozen times. He flips back from the end, teeth clenched, palms sweating, and... "A-ha. Okay. Found it."
Stede reaches out, assuming Edward will hand the book back. But his eyes widen when Edward clears his throat and starts reading:
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
Six lines in, Edward peeks at Stede, but he can't get a read on him - his expression absent and his face a wee drawn. Edward fears he messed up. What if Alma is wrong, and Stede doesn't want to be read to? What if, instead of a romantic gesture, he's making an ass out of himself? He knows he skewed a pronunciation here and there. Alteration for one. And impediments? It took him a whole afternoon to learn that one, and he still screwed it up. He contemplates whether he should continue. He's already gotten this far. He should finish, yes?
Jeff, the accountant, would finish.
But other parts of Ed would rather bite his fingers off.
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error, and upon me prov’d,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov’d.
Edward closes the book and stares at the cover. He can't make himself look up, can't face Stede's vacant expression. Not when he doesn't know what it means. The man hasn't said a thing. Not a single word.
That's not like Stede at all.
They sit in silence for what seems like ages before Stede opens his mouth. "You can read?"
"Uh...this one poem for now," Edward says, eyes glued to the well-worn cover as if it's a buoy in choppy seas and he's holding on for dear life. "Alma taught me. She thought..." He skids to a halt. He has no intention of tossing that well-meaning girl underneath the carriage. "I thought, you know, it would be a nice surprise...if I could read to you. I mean, you read all the time to me and the crew. It's only fair."
Edward can't help feeling Stede is disappointed. This is the first milestone they've spent together, and Edward scotched it with his non-present present. He should have simply followed social norms and bought Stede a pocket watch or something, whether he needs another one or not.
Edward sighs, his shoulders slumping. "Was this...was it a stupid gift? It was, wasn't it?" He closes his eyes, locking himself away inside a world where he didn't just make a colossal faux pas. Stupid, stupid! "I'm sorry, Stede. That's not your only present. I promise. I got you something else, something real. Something you can touch---"
Stede's lips against his stop the rest of his apology. Edward doesn't waste time being surprised over Stede's forwardness. He puts a hand to Stede's cheek and kisses him back, then he kisses him again. He endeavors to kiss him for every day they were apart, every day he thought Stede had abandoned him.
Because God, he loves this man.
"Oh, Edward," Stede whispers, chuckling when Edward refuses to stop kissing him to let him speak. "That was one of the most beautiful gifts anyone has ever given me."
Edward presses a bashful smile against Stede's mouth. "Really? You're not just saying that?"
"I wouldn't dare." Stede winds his arms around Edward and pulls him close, unconcerned with what happens to the book in the process. "I don't need to touch a gift for it to be real. Your gift touched me. And besides, you've already given me a wonderful gift that's more real to me than anything."
Edward's brow furrows. He runs the tip of his nose against Stede's, trying to think of what gift he's given him. But he can't come up with a thing. If anything, Stede is always the one giving: sharing his clothes, his food, his expertise, his ship. "What's that?"
Stede inches closer, gleefully submitting to an evening of being kissed senseless. "Your love."
"I'm glad you like it," Edward whispers with the old Blackbeard charm Stede first fell in love with, "because you will always have it."

page 3704! he directly acknowledges the commands even if he has to comply with them explicitly wondering why hes having thoughts about law and justice and vocally attempting to rationalize them rather than just ignoring them or performing them unthinkingly
TG: im pretty sure i dont even have an exileTG: ive never heard any voices or anythingTG: anyway you dont need a voice in your head to tell you this shit isTG: just likeTG: so completely illegalGC: >:?TG: waitTG: why did i just say that stupid thing i said
This is actually really interesting. I’m pretty sure John mentions actively being able to hear the voice in his head, and saying that it makes him do really stupid things - but we also see that he’s able to just… outright ignore it?
Starts on page… 434 to 437. John eventually walks off screen while flipping the “camera” the middle finger. The next piece of information we get is John saying, on 473, that:
EB: i’m not sure what came over me there, i was acting really crazy for some reason.EB: but my head feels like it’s clearing up, i think i’m alright now.
And then, on page 507, when WV asks him for a can opener:
Oblivious to the commotion behind you, suddenly you find yourself pondering the whereabouts of a CAN OPENER.You think there is probably one in the kitchen, but the path is blocked by your REFRIGERATOR.
Which, if you’ve noticed a pattern, John only ever hears the voice suggesting these actions and goes into an odd bout of seeming insanity. He directly converses with it and can go back and forth with WV on whether or not the can opener is there, if he’s stupid, and he says it’s like a fog went over his mind for a bit.
And then, of course, once the Exiles are introduced for sure, we get things like Terezi (as a Seer of Mind) being able to actually talk with the Black Queen.
This isn’t a wholly formal instance of the narrative. We know that the Exiles are characters guiding the kids, rather than the actual narrative itself - but they make up a good chunk of the narrative we see to begin with, and they’re symbolic of narrative speakers/authors themselves, so it’s incredibly interesting to see how, for instance…

TG: ive got to explode this ridiculously illegal edifice oh my god what are these words im saying
Dave seems completely incapable of ignoring the narrative to such a degree that he actually starts saying AR’s words out loud.
He can’t acknowledge that AR is an Exile talking in his head, for some reason. Much like Dirk in the Meat Epilogues, Dave has this weird feeling that he’s saying things he wouldn’t normally say, thinking things he wouldn’t normally think. And this is when he’s been explicitly told that this is a thing that happens.
When it’s John, he’s, for some reason, more aware of the voice in his head as an actual entity that’s contacting him - that these are thoughts outside of his own and that they’re something he has to respond back to.
Dave, on the other hand, interprets them as something he’s meant to say. AR and WV are doing the exact same thing - using the > prefix and typing a command - but for some reason John’s responses are much more aware than Dave’s.
But then, maybe it’s the other way around. John knows that the voice in his head is something else, another character; he seems pretty sure of this before the concept of Exiles are brought into question.
Dave, by contrast, doesn’t accept this possibility even when he’s hearing the voice himself and finds that he’s saying weird things. Either he’s in denial - which is pretty typical for Dave, actually, since a lot of his character revolves around the denial of his Self - or he’s so used to hearing these subconscious voices that he doesn’t distinguish AR as a completely separate entity.
How could he, if he’s always affected by the narrative? If a lot of his speech comes from the narration?
It’s definitely a weird circumstance, if I’m honest. Dave is the only character to be affected by this, from what I can recall; no-one else has this really weird moment of actively speaking the things their Exile says, rather than just responding to them or doing the action. Even Sollux notes that the voice of Clubs Deuce is in his head, talking to him, and isn’t just an out of place thought that seems to have come from nowhere.
Most of the time the characters don’t know what it is, but they’re aware enough to know it’s not them. Dave… isn’t? He pretty much just boils it down to himself having a “moment” and asks Terezi to ignore it - even though she literally just explained that Exiles are a thing.
This is his reasoning behind it, even.
TG: maybe i am supposed to be a hero and rise to the occasion because there seems to be this little persistent voice in my head nagging me about itTG: insisting someones gotta payTG: and its hard for me to disagree
Like everything else, Dave is aware of the voice but actively ignoring what it is. The same way he’s aware of Dirk’s voice but somehow ignores that the voice is Dirk, or the narrative, and trying to force him to do things. The same way he ignores his awake Dreamself on Derse.
Dave is weird with his connection to the narrative. I’m honestly assuming, at this point in time, that Dave’s so used to hearing the narrative that he doesn’t even question AR’s commands even though he’s explicitly aware of them. He accepts them as this weird “part of himself but not himself” paradox.

'Nosferatu' Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror Released in 1922, Nosferatu is just a few years shy of its 100th anniversary, and somehow still manages to be creepy. Part of that effect may come from its on-location sets and beautifully framed shots, and Max Schreck’s performance as the titular monster certainly factors into its legacy. Yet another spooky aspect is the film’s soundtrack, which has been adapted and reimagined over the years. This Halloween, guests can head to the Music Box Theatre for a screening set to a live soundtrack from the Curse of the Vampire Orchestra, by Minneapolis composer Philip Shorey. The score features a local symphony and choral musicians mixed with modern electronica and industrial percussion. 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18-19; 3:30 p.m. Oct. 19. Free; RSVP required. MN Toy Posse Image courtesy event organizers MN Toy Posse Halloween Bash 3 What happens when you combine 70 toy sellers from all over the Midwest, hundreds of toy fans of all ages, and thousands of rare and unique toys and collectables? You get one giant posse. This weekend, the Minnesota Toy Posse will host its third-annual Halloween Bash toy swap. Posse founder Mark Seekamp started the group a little over three years ago on Facebook as a way to help connect people looking to buy, sell, or trade their favorite toys. He hadn’t planned on just how many people would want to join his gang. “We have more than 2,200 members, and it’s a really active group,” he says. And it’s not just about toys, either. “We’ve become friends and talk about our lives. People will post pictures when they have a baby, or we’ll just use it to meet up and go see a movie. It’s about creating relationships beyond just looking for toys.” For Seekamp, the best part of the day is how toys can bring people together. “The coolest part is being able to see someone who is going to be really excited about a toy that you have that you’re ready to part with.” 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 20. Being a victim of Illegal recruitment is OFW’s worst nightmare. You finished an interview, paid for a medical exam and invested thousands of pesos for a non-existing job. According to a Department of Justice report, 1, 567 cases were reported in 2016. Illegal recruitment exploits and makes OFWs vulnerable. Before you sign a contract or pay for a placement fee, be armed of these reminders and identify the red flags.

Know the red flags of an illegal recruiter
These signs tell that an agency might be operating illegally or is a scam.
Asks for immediate payment via money transfers.
Conducts recruitment and interviews in restaurants and/or other non-office areas.
Offers to work abroad under tourist visas – Most countries, if not all, do not allow foreigners to work under tourist visas.
Unclear info and contract – What has been promised do not reflect in the contract. Details such as job site, company name, and job nature were not specified.
Unlicensed agency
Offers jobs without POEA approved job orders.
Legit job offers tell that a job is existing in a specific country. The POEA has this guide where you can sort out the job order by country, agency, and position.
Apply only to accredited agencies

Shows a valid POEA license – its number shows in the agency website or job add. You can also verify them through POEA list. Take note that some agencies who are previously licensed but may have their license revoked or suspended due to recruitment violations. For instance, have a look at these recent 10 agencies with revoked licenses.
Makes valid fees – Legit agencies charge placement fees that are equal to 1-month salary. They should ask for payment only after the contract signing and provide an official receipt.
Has a reputable reputation both offline and online – A legit agency commands respect from happy OFWs otherwise, if an illegal recruiter scammed a dozen or more OFWs, they’ll receive a horde of bad reviews.
Check the agency online

POEA features an online database where you can search and check for accredited agencies. It will also show the agency’s POEA license and office address. Here is the resource that sorts by name and valid license. By the time of this writing, 3707 records exist.
Here is a list of POEA accredited recruitment agencies: poea.gov.ph/services/recruiters.html
Search jobs in a trusted online job website
The online job sites sort and stores the database of agency names, job ads, and their licenses. Here is the trusted ohjobs.ph
Never work for a visit or tourist visa
A country’s immigration law intends a visit or tourist visa for tourism purposes only. Depending on the country’s jurisdiction, foreigners who work under a tourist visa will get penalized to a certain degree.  For example, in the UAE, you can’t work as paid or unpaid if you hold a visit or tourist visa. To avoid illegal recruitment, only accept job offers with a valid working visa.
If you do, you’ll risk being arrested by immigration agents and deported from that country. It’s easy to go to UAE in visit visa with the purpose of finding a job there. However, keep in mind that the Bureau of Immigration is wary of tourist visa holders with the intention to work in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Recently, they offloaded 30 Filipinos because of the intention to work with tourist visas in host countries upon arrival.
Verify the job ad
Valid job ad shows a trusted seal to show that it’s a trusted business. Further, you can verify the job ad by:
Tumblr media
Knowing via POEA website
Checking the job ad website – A site with scanty content, vague descriptions, and requirements.
Checking the important details via a search engine – Check the worksite and duration of the contract.
Deal with government agencies, never with fixers
Never deal with fixers who promise speedy transactions in exchange for cash. Often fixers stay outside the government office where they immediately talk to first time applicants. Only deal with government agencies such as POEA and DOLE. Always deal with their authorized representatives. Look for their name, IDs and contact numbers.
Be wary of job ads in social media
Tumblr media

Job ads are frequent in facebook, twitter, and LinkedIn. After all, it’s easy to sign up and post such ads. This does not mean that all job ads in social media are bogus because the majority of job ads in social media are legit. But the ease of signing up and posting online opens the door for scammers. An example is a job for mushroom pickers for Canada. The ad exaggerated the number of positions and inflated the salary. Legit job ads come from the official social media pages of a recruitment and government agency.
Be sceptic of too good to be true offers
If a job offer is too good to be true, then it’s a red flag for a scam job ad and possible illegal recruitment. For example, scammers and illegal recruiters often inflate the salaries of a position. Recently, the mushroom picker position attracted Facebook users who aspire for greener pastures in Canada. The said ad failed to report the actual exchange rate to Philippine peso. When you see a job ad, it’s useful to have a healthy scepticism to ensure that such a job is not a scam. It’s also helpful to research thoroughly about the job position’s industry standard.
Avoid these forms of illegal recruitment
Tumblr media

These clandestine recruitments styles constitute illegal recruitment
Escort services – OFWs escorted out of the country.
Seminars and training schemes – Students leave under the training program but in reality, lands a job in that training establishment.
By email and VOIP programs – Illegal recruiters may use email and VOIP  (Skype, WhatsApp) to lure aspirants about job offers that are too good to be true.
The bottomline
Avoiding illegal recruitment constitutes readiness, thorough research and awareness of the drive of the government to wipe out bogus agencies and their job ads. Although they might not go out soon in the foreseeable future, your awareness of these reminders can help you avoid illegal recruiters, find legit jobs, help other OFWs and the government to enforce its laws and protect its citizenry.
