15 PHD/RESEARCH POSITIONS ON CANCER GENOMIC EVOLUTION http://bit.ly/2mLou1r Application deadline: 23:59 CET on the 15 February 2018 Cancer is a major cause of death and suffering. It constitutes a group of diseases characterized by abnormal cell growth, stage-wise progression, heterogeneity, and potential to develop resistance to therapies. All these aspects are consequences of the evolutionary nature of cancer. Fortunately, genomics has recently begun to provide opportunities for unprecedentedly detailed insights into tumour evolution. New techniques are presently emerging for assaying the spatial distribution of tumour heterogeneity, and future yet unforeseen experimental breakthroughs are inevitable. CONTRA (http://bit.ly/2mLou1r) is a H2020 Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network aimed at providing a structured training programme to 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) to study tumor evolution using computational techniques upon novel experimental data including, but not limited to, single-cell genomic data. See the list of projects at the end of this message. The training structure of CONTRA will include local and network-wide activities and secondments to other labs in the network. Most positions are for 3 years and some for 4 years, contracts starting approximately July 1, 2018, but all of them lead to a PhD degree. Specific conditions may apply to individual positions depending on local regulations. Top-level graduates (master degree or equivalent) in bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, computer science or evolutionary biology are encouraged to apply. No discrimination will be made on the basis of nationality, gender, race, religion or disability. H2020 EU funding imposes strict eligibility criteria. At the time of recruitment the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc…) in the country of the host institute for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to his/her recruitment. The researcher should also be in the first four years of their research careers at the time of recruitment by the host organisation and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. The successful candidate will receive a very generous financial package. The exact conditions varies across the universities, but the gross amounts of EU funding for an ESR is in the range 3710€-4210€. The net salary will result from deducting all compulsory (employer/employee) social security contributions as well as direct taxes from the gross amounts, according to the law applicable to the agreement concluded with the ESR. Rory Burns. And after that then we are looking at two and three. Joe Denly played two Tests against West Indies and Ed Smith is a big fan of him.

We’ve got a lot of younger players in County Cricket like Harry Brook at Yorkshire, who hasn’t had the greatest season this year but has a lot of potential. There are no red ball specialists now – they are brought up with both.

We have a lot of 20 to 21-year-olds who are a couple of years away from playing for England.

If this wasn’t an Ashes year, I would gamble and put Jason Roy in.

Maybe he will come in and flourish. But it’s such a big year and that would be putting so much pressure on him before he’s even played.

But if the selectors think the cupboard is bare he could come in because he knows the team and the set up.

My fear if Jason Roy was picked, is people might want him to be our Virender Sehway but it’s very tricky to play the same way. The red Dukes ball moves all over the place in the first hour.

Should Jason Roy open in the Ashes?

Jason Roy is a fantastic talent, he can hit the ball all round the ground and has a fine straight drive.

People might compare him to Alex Hales, but when Alex Hales came into Test cricket, his strike rate was actually slower than mine.

The big thing I have about Roy is he hasn’t opened the batting much in red ball cricket, if at all.

It might be he’s the best option we’ve got but I’d still be skeptical about it because it’s a unique art, opening the batting in Tests.

What do you want to do on the first morning of an Ashes, bat or bowl?

It depends on the venue. If you’re at Brisbane you want to bat first because if you don’t it’s going to be very, very hard to win the game.

In England, it might be better for bowling. There are times though that you want to bat even if it’s going to swing because it could still be the best time for batting in the match.

Did you ever find yourself daydreaming and then snap out of it, worried you weren’t concentrating?

I once got distracted during a one-day game for Northants at Eastbourne. I was fielding in front of the pavilion and the opposition physio, who I know, was talking to me, blatantly trying to distract me.

I heard a pop and someone yell, ‘Swanny’. The ball was rolling in my direction and I turned a single into a two. I was panicking and threw it in – it was a direct hit and I got a run out!

I preferred standing with Cooky in the slips because he’s got more to him than most people think. He comes up with some of the best quips and one-liners ever but doesn’t have the balls to say them in the changing room so I steal them.

Andrew Strauss was a bit dull comparatively.
