Dressed as her alter ego, a Fire Nation spirit, she’s wearing clothing heavily inspired by traditional Thai clothing because much of the Fire Nation clothing seems to reference that style of clothing, and I wanted to honor that.

People talk about the similarities between the Painted Lady and the Blue Spirit, but personally I think Lee would be a little more suitable.

The episodes "Zuko Alone" and "The Painted Lady" have literally the same plot: both Zuko and Katara help an enemy village in poverty while hiding their identities.

Also, they both reveal these identities at the end and face the disapproval of the people.

And both became attached to the children from these villages.

If at the end of "The Painted Lady" Katara had been driven away as an enemy, it would have worked even more as a parallel. But, fortunately or unfortunately, her episode ended less tragically than Zuko's.
