Kintsugi is the art of decorating your scars with pieces of Agni.

In the Fire Nation, the amount of golden marks are a sign of status. Only the Royal Family can afford to seal every single wound with Kintsugi. Such is the weight of this tradition that, among the ones with Agni's blood, it is the highest mark of dishonor to have a natural scar, for it proves you aren't worthy of the privilege.

After the Agni Kai, Ozai forbid Zuko's scar to be sealed with Kintsugi. The boy wasn't worth his title, his traditions or his pride. Zuko would be broken, but he wouldn't be beautiful. Not anymore.

(And sometimes it's easier to pretend he never was)

This Peter Pan quote has been stuck in my head for yearsssss and it goes like:

“You know that place between sleep and awake, the place where you can still remember dreaming? That's where I'll always love you. That's where I'll be waiting”

So of course I’m thinking about it and I just thought, in another world maybe that’s how Zuko and Katara love each other. Not in the sense that they’re stuck with Aang and Mai, but they chose to be with them (for reasons) over being with one another, and in the back of their minds there’s all these what ifs. And though they’ll never say it out loud they do love each other in a different way than they love their spouses. They just never pursued it. And maybe one day, when one of them is close to the end (I’m thinking Katara but it could be either) and their spouses have long gone, they talk about what could’ve been. And it’s a beautiful last moment shared between the two and one of them is left to think about that while the other finds peace. Mourning both the lost of a best friend (bc how couldn’t they be close after the Agni Kai) and a love that could have been but never was.
