Catalina island. I've wanted to come here and watercolor paint ever since I got into watercolor painting. (at the end of 2019) FINALLY I HAVE DONE IT!! 🤘🙂🎨🖌 #rockon Catalina's Casino, first painting of the day. When I started it was gloomy and I was still yawning. Went to Catalina on no sleep lol didn't want to oversleepy and miss my boat so there ya go, lol. Would have spent more time on this painting but something I didn't count on happened... I started the painting from a rail outside the casino, which was fine when morning gloom was about but with the rising sun the sunlight bounced off the water and into my eyes like a friggin mirror! He looked so cool!! Jaguar man in his full dancing outfit! I painted him while he danced 🎨🤓🖌 and even caught him before he left to present him with my work lol He then showed me his full headdress and outfit, all things HE MADE. He also loved the watercolor I did of him so much that he cover the "other guy" on the sketchbook page lol. I PAINTED HIM! While he danced nevertheless lol It was really interesting experience painting someone while they are moving around continuously 🎨🤓🖌 So I've been a participating Artist and vendor for many years at the Dia de Los Muertos Celebration and Art show and this year was the first time it got filled before I could be given a spot😔 ...BUT☝️😏 something I always wanted to do was paint the dancers while they performed, every year I've missed them because I was at my booth. Well dang it, not this year!! Painting at sunset with my friend in a beret. He dressed for the Art occasion lol Watercolor painting on a hilltop overlooking the ocean in Corona del Mar people gathered to watch the sunset. I love that and fyi people do that in Hawaii as well. Arting was fun. This is the progress shot. My focus was the rock in the background covered in seagulls next to a palm. It was David's first time watercolor painting in a while so I gave some drops of wisdom... Before you start painting take a second to focus on why you are drawn to that particular spot. What do you want to stay with your art? This will give you directions and focus while you work. For me the rock nearest the ocean with all the seagulls just drew me in so that was where I maintain my focus and the most details. Also it's good to keep taking pictures of your art during the process. At the beginning, halfway point and more towards the end. Not just because it is a record of your progress but because it helps you disassociate away from your art to look at it with fresh eyes. I'll be posting my final piece soon. River otter was the last painting I got to before the Natural History Museum closed for the day. Many otter thanks to the wonderfully nice lady who gave up her and her boyfriends seat for me to paint from, the spot closest to the exhibit. I should have gave her my art card but I was so in the oh my God I only have 20 minutes to paint this mode 😒🖌 lol On average I'd spend about 40 minutes per watercolor painting so on this one I had to ask myself what was the most important part and that was the otter. That's why he's painted in more detail and the environment was kind of an afterthought... you can even see the paint still wet on the upper left-hand side. When deciding what to paint, close ur eyes and see who calls you... in my case it was a Trex baby. 🦖 @nhmla Tyrannosaurus was interesting to paint considering I was so far away, about half the room away actually but hey I gotta do what I gotta do! Lol Interesting how the color scheme came about almost accidentally... a dark green vs burnt sienna. At a certain point I was like let's roll with this 🦖 Afterwards, watercolors being a wet medium, I took my baby for a stroll through the garden to dry up and appreciate the outdoors lol ( The last time I was at the Natural History Museum was for DINOFEST! ALL DINOS ALL DAY LOL 🦕🦖🦕🦖 I had such a great time listening to paleontologist lectures, seeing scene props from Jurassic Park movies etc. And they also had the Arctic dinosaurs exhibit on display. It was AWESOME. A Walrus. Literally you can see how wet my painting was lol I've always wanted to paint him and yesterday I jumped at the chance! Only thing I left out was those fuzzy whiskers but due to the time constraints of literally waiting for the paint to dry and wanting to get a few more paintings done in the day I had to make due. I actually like when people want to see what I'm working on. I'm happy to show you and answer and questions. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love talking about my Art lol But this sweet interaction happened near the finish of my Walrus painting... a little girl, maybe 4 asked me "How did you get so good?" Me- "Sweetie I started drawing when I was YOUR age. You can do this too eventually. Start drawing things now." Her mom - "Did you hear that she was YOUR age when she started." Me 😊 aweee and I swear I saw her little kid mind wheels start turning 👍😉🖌🎨 @nhmla Mr. Walrus was fun to create and he is now near the end of this particular sketchbook which I gotta say excites me that I do see progress in my work.
