WWD's insanely oversized Liopleurodon ferox is infamous, and for good reason, but what doesn't get mentioned nearly as much is the other end of the scale. Ichthyosaurs were a diverse group, but some of the species from the late Triassic and early Jurassic were monstrously huge.

How huge? This huge.

Ichthyotitan is a more recent discovery, known mostly from fragmentary remains, so estimates to its size and weight are based on smaller, more complete relatives (Besanosaurus in this case), but not only show it dwarfing Pliosaurus funkei, the Pliosaur closest to the ridiculous size of WWD's Liopleurodon, but also being bigger than the oversized reconstruction as well.

It's most likely still lighter than the Blue Whale, but finding a larger specimen isn't impossible.

Ichthyotitan probably still wouldn't be dragging any unfortunate Megalosaurs down into the depths with it, though. We're not entirely sure what they ate, many of the largest Ichthyosaurs are reconstructed as being suction-feeders, similar to modern Sperm Whales, but recent finds have suggested that Shonisaurus did in fact have teeth, and big, deeply-rooted conical ones that suggest it was a macropredator, more akin to a giant, oceanic crocodile than a whale.

Okay so I was scouring jojowiki.com as usual and it says there that Diego's dinosaur form is based on an outdated record of a Utahraptor, and I don't know anything about them but I have a slight suspicion they were found in Utah.

I dunno just thought it was funny how to the point the name is. "it's a raptor in Utah, let's call it Utahraptor"

You blame Jim Kirkland over on his twitter for naming them that.

But yeah, "[Place name]saurus [place name]ensis" is a meme in the paleocommunity for a reason. (The word "ensis" meaning "from [place name]".) Image souce: Adam-Loves-Dinosaurs.

I think Utahraptor is probably the most famous one. When another large dromeosaur was found in Dakota, DePalma felt it natural to smash the usual dromeosaur suffix of "raptor" with the prefix of [Place name] to name Dakotaraptor.

It was discovered in (yes I'm using Wikipedia's text) Mǎmíngxī (马鸣溪 'horse-neighing brook') by Yang Zhongjian (楊鍾健), grandfather of Chinese Palaeontology. However, Yang wasn't from the area and mistook the intonation for the locale name. So he ended up calling it (馬門溪龍屬), from Mǎménxī (马门溪 'horse-gate brook').

That's probably the most fun one I can think of, but the others are like...

Koreacertops. Aegyptosaurus. Argentinosaurus. Patagotitan (Patagonia). Chilesaurus (Chile, but apparently it sounds like "dick" in latin countries?) Edmontosaurus (Canadian province, Edmonton). Albertosaurus (Candadian province Alberta, named after Princess Louise Carolina Alberta... named after Prince Albert). Gondwanasuchus (A crocodile actually, that was found in São Paulo, you know where, which USED to be part of the supercontinent Gondwana). Adamantisaurus is named from the same formation the croc was found, Adamantina.

Probably the most common kind of argument on the internet regarding dinosaurs at the moment is names and... IMO, it's not worth it unless it's REALLY bad or a bit mishandled, like Kuru kulla or Mamenchisaurus. But then, that's what the ICZN (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature) is usually for.

Anyway, Thanos is the worst dinosaur name in current use. Grapes, I need your Brazilian Portuguese expertise to write a strongly worded letter to Rafael Delcourt and Fabiano Vidoi Iori on good naming conventions. Obrigado Uva!

Small detail in The Batman that I loved: how much they showed him getting hit.

Especially in the early years, one of the whole reasons Batman gains his terrifying reputation and keeps it is that he just absorbs punches. You can punch him, hit him with a pipe, hell even shoot at him - and he doesn't even stop. He just plows right through it like it's nothing to him. You get the whispers of he's like a shadow, like a demon, you just can't hurt him even when you're throwing everything you've got. And that becomes the terrifying legend of The Batman.

And I just really appreciate that this film showed that. He didn't ninja his way through, dodging every blow. He got hit and kicked and shot but he just kept on fucking going.

I am SO glad to see that Prehistoric Planet has reached people outside of the hardcore palaeontology community. That even people who are not deeply or semi-professionally interested in dinosaurs and other Mesozoic animals are watching these episodes, or even clips of these episodes, and enjoying them.

And they're enjoying them the same way I see people online enjoy other animal documentaries!! "Haha look at this weird dance, wiggling his tiny arms about!" "Awww, isn't she so cute, look at her little face!" "Oh my god I was so worried about the baby getting lost but they made it!!! Yay!!!" It's so wonderful and refreshing to see that being a general public reaction to dinosaurs.

I've seen clips and images and memes float across my dash from people who've never mentioned an interest in prehistoric animals before, and I've seen people talking about these dinosaurs and pterosaurs and plesiosaurs and mosasaurs just like they do any other animal, and that is exactly what I want for people to see and feel about these amazing creatures. Yes, some of them are kinda weird! Some of them are really cute! They were capable of being awesome, and funny, and clever, and cool, and sweet, and everything else under the sun. And isn't it amazing, that they once lived, and we can know these things?

And I've had people ask me questions, and they're not even necessarily wanting in-depth hard science, but they're seeing these things and wondering about the answers, showing genuine interest and curiosity which, at the end, can only lead to them learning.

I hope to god this shows TV executives and producers and companies that this kind of down-to-earth, realism-based, high-quality programme IS in demand, IS capable of doing well, and IS worth doing more of, and is worth doing for a general audience. I hope that BBC can start to get the budget to do more like this themselves, without having to rely on a company like Apple to shoulder the majority of their costs. And I hope beyond hope that this can finally bring the prehistoric world into the public view in the way that it deserves to be there.

I don't think there's anything funnier than watching dozens of serial killers walk morosely out of their fun little murder convention like disciplined toddlers, so wracked with sudden guilt that they immediately either turn themselves in or kill themselves. The concept is hilarious and the execution of it doubly so.
