Dean holding a grudge, flooredbythelord.com, demons kidnapping a reaper, astral projection, Tessa the Reaper, Sam and Dean being taught how to punch by a ten year old ghost, the true Alastair vessel, reaping the reapers, the death of Pamela Barnes.
My Thoughts:
I’m gonna make this one quick because it’s nearly midnight and I want to go to bed!
Reapers were SO cool in the early seasons. I miss when they had to literally go into the veil and skirt dying to talk to them. None of this “they can act like people” nonsense of season 9 when that one slept with Cas for no reason.
I LOVE Alastair as a villain. This actor went so much harder than he had to and it pays off big time. He’s creepy without being camp and just inhuman enough to feel unsettling whenever he’s on screen. The directing supports it really well too, always using angles that are just slightly off from what we’re used to to build in the unease.
Cas at the end is everything. I love season 4 Cas, he’s still so mysterious. I love watching him start to learn disobedience from Dean.
If I was more awake I think I’d have way more to say but this is just a great episode!
Notable Lines:
“I mean, you and me, we're like the poster boys of the unnatural order. All we do is ditch death.”
“You know, I've done things. Horrible things. And someone upstairs still decided to give me a second chance.”
“You made an exception for me.” “You’re different.”
“That's the big secret. We're all scared.”
Laura’s (completely subjective) Episode Rating: 9.7
IMdB Rating: 8.7
In Conclusion: I wish Cas would pop into more scenes with great one liners, deliver a ton of homoerotic longing, and then disappear again.

The Life I’m In by Sharon G. Flake Scholastic Inc
My feet are heavy as stones when I walk up the block wondering why I can’t find my old self.
In The Skin I’m In, readers saw into the life of Maleeka Madison, a teen who suffered from the ridicule she received because of her dark skin color. For decades fans have wanted to know the fate of the bully who made Maleeka’s life miserable, Char.
Now in Sharon Flake’s latest and unflinching novel, The Life I’m In, we follow Charlese Jones, who, with her raw, blistering voice speaks the truths many girls face, offering insight to some of the causes and conditions that make a bully. Turned out of the only home she has known, Char boards a bus to nowhere where she is lured into the dangerous web of human trafficking. Much is revealed behind the complex system of men who take advantage of vulnerable teens in the underbelly of society. While Char might be frightened, she remains strong and determined to bring herself and her fellow victims out of the dark and back into the light, reminding us why compassion is a powerful cure to the ills of the world.
Sharon Flake’s bestselling, Coretta Scott King Award-winning novel The Skin I’m In was a game changer when it was first published more than twenty years ago. It redefined young adult literature by presenting characters, voices, and real-world experiences that had not been fully seen. Now Flake offers readers another timely and radical story of a girl on the brink and how her choices will lead her to either fall, or fly. — Cover image and summary via Goodreads

The Awakening of Malcom X by Ilyasah Shabazz & Tiffany D. Jackson Farrar, Straus and Giroux (Byr)
In Charlestown Prison, Malcolm Little struggles with the weight of his past. Plagued by nightmares, Malcolm drifts through days unsure of his future. Slowly, he befriends other prisoners and writes to his family. He reads all the books in the prison library, joins the debate team and the Nation of Islam. And as his time in jail comes to an end, he begins to awaken — emerging from prison more than just Malcolm Little: Now, he is Malcolm X.

When You Look Like Us by Pamela N. Harris HarperCollins
When you look like us—brown skin, brown eyes, black braids or fades—people think you’re trouble. No one looks twice at a missing black girl from the projects because she must’ve brought whatever happened to her upon herself. I, Jay Murphy, can admit that, for a minute, I thought my sister, Nicole, got too caught up with her boyfriend—a drug dealer—and his friends.
But she’s been gone too long now.
If I hadn’t hung up on her that night, she’d be spending time with our grandma. If I was a better brother, she’d be finishing senior year instead of being another name on a missing persons list. It’s time to step up and do what the Newport News police department won’t.

Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel can’t turn down the money and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon.
But life changes on May 31, 1921 when a vicious white mob storms the community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

Thirty Talks Weird Love by Alessandra Narváez Varela Cinco Puntos Press
Out of nowhere, a lady comes up to Anamaría and says she’s her, from the future. But Anamaría’s thirteen, she knows better than to talk to some weirdo stranger. Girls need to be careful, especially in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico—it’s the 90’s and fear is overtaking her beloved city as cases of kidnapped girls and women become alarmingly common. This thirty-year-old “future” lady doesn’t seem to be dangerous but she won’t stop bothering her, switching between cheesy Hallmark advice about being kind to yourself, and some mysterious talk about saving a girl.
Anamaría definitely doesn’t need any saving, she’s doing just fine. She works hard at her strict, grade-obsessed middle school—so hard that she hardly gets any sleep; so hard that the stress makes her snap not just at mean girls but even her own (few) friends; so hard that when she does sleep she dreams about dying—but she just wants to do the best she can so she can grow up to be successful. Maybe Thirty’s right, maybe she’s not supposed to be so exhausted with her life, but how can she ask for help when her city is mourning the much bigger tragedy of its stolen girls?
This thought-provoking, moving verse novel will lead adult and young adult readers alike to vital discussions on important topics—like dealing with depression and how to recognize this in yourself and others—through the accessible voice of a thirteen-year-old girl.

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo Dutton Books for Young Readers
“That book. It was about two women, and they fell in love with each other.” And then Lily asked the question that had taken root in her, that was even now unfurling its leaves and demanding to be shown the sun: “Have you ever heard of such a thing?”

With deportation looming over her father—despite his hard-won citizenship—Lily and Kath risk everything to let their love see the light of day.

The Knockout by Sajni Patel Flux
If seventeen-year-old Kareena Thakkar is going to alienate herself from the entire Indian community, she might as well do it gloriously. She’s landed the chance of a lifetime, an invitation to the US Muay Thai Open, which could lead to a spot on the first-ever Olympic team. If only her sport wasn’t seen as something too rough for girls, something she’s afraid to share with anyone outside of her family. Despite pleasing her parents, exceling at school, and making plans to get her family out of debt, Kareena’s never felt quite Indian enough, and her training is only making it worse.
Which is inconvenient, since she’s starting to fall for Amit Patel, who just might be the world’s most perfect Indian. Admitting her feelings for Amit will cost Kareena more than just her pride–she’ll have to face his parents’ disapproval, battle her own insecurities, and remain focused for the big fight. Kareena’s bid for the Olympics could very well make history–if she has the courage to go for it.

I typically do Twin Peaks takes, but since Supernatural has been parasitically living off a major artery of mine since November 5th, I’ve decided to vent and list (some of) the things I wanted from the show but never got because reasons, musings, and headcanons. Some of these would require major rewrites to the overall show. I don’t take that as a net loss. Some of these takes may have been addressed at some point, but there are so many episodes and I haven’t even see all them, so bear with me. Possible edits and add-ons may occur:
The Roadhouse never gets burned down. The culture and community of the hunters gets a larger focus. Where do they all get their supplies for summoning spells, healing, protection spells, etc? I guess a normal grocery store or new age store, but how cool would it be if there some sort of underground hunters’ farmers’ market?
Hunters that practice magic regularly and for reasons other than hunting.
More hunters like the doctor in season 6 that specialize in medicine, maybe supernatural ailments too. There are cures for getting turned into vampires and werewolves (under certain circumstances). Could there be other cures for different monsters?
More psychic mediums like Missouri. Or just more Missouri.
It’s implied that physics are naturally gifted, but what if normal people could also develop those skills? What if one of the brothers dips their toes in conducting seances and divination?
Hunters like Frank, who are more tech-based. Exploring divides in hunters that like traditional methods vs modern ones.
Maybe a more nuanced look at hunting? It’s interesting how pretty much every hunter we’ve met got into it because of some tragedy in life, which is fine, but I’m curious how many do it because that’s just the world they know. They’re not exactly in it for heroics or revenge, but simply because they’re familiar with this supernatural world and interact with it as such?
We learn Meg’s real name and what the hell was up with her relation to Azazel. And the guy that was apparently his son and her brother. Were they literally Azazel’s kids, or were they just very loyal to him to garner those titles?
More time with Ellen and Jo before they end up dying (or just don’t die at all... That could be nice).
You know that season 6 episode where Balthazar stops the Titanic from sinking, and it starts a domino affect alternate timeline where Ellen never died and married Bobby? That, but no alternate timeline. It’s just part of the show. Because it would be cute and they’d make a great Ma and Pop duo.
Ellen wasn’t surprised when she met Sam and Dean, so she must have known about them when she met John years ago. Was she aware of the life they lived? Did she ever have any concern, especially after her husband died and she forbid Jo from ever hunting?
How many hunters met the Winchesters and witnessed the absolutely screwed up situation going on and either shook their heads or thought there was absolutely nothing wrong?
More Pamela.
Rufus doesn’t die.
Lisa and Ben STAY.
Garth and Kevin Dream Team.
Garth, Kevin, AND Charlie.
All the above STAY AROUND AND ALIVE.
Claire gets a bigger role and sticks around for more seasons.
Ben decides he wants to hunt, but Dean disapproves, so he and Claire team up.
Anna stays. Not as a love interest to Dean, but a foil to Cas. His pushy and rude big sister that wants him to Chill TF Out.
Jo x Charlie. I will not elaborate.
No angel-on-angel romance. I swear to god. The writers revoked that right when they had them keep calling each other brother and sister.
Tessa doesn’t die.
Reapers aren’t angels.
Tessa is the one reaper the brothers ever meet and interact with, so I like to think that, because of their important place in the Grand Plan, Death trusts her with the task of reaping them.
Tessa appreciates this, but really, Really wishes he picked someone else.
Turns out Death assigned her this task specifically because of her sardonic attitude towards the brothers.
Rufus was Jewish, so are there any Jewish-specific spells and incantations that could be used on demons and ghosts?
Speaking of which, Dean uses some Yiddish and Hebrew phrases, stuff that’s fairly unlikely for a gentile to know (he says “dayenu” at one point), and he’s an aggressively non-religious character at that (also Sam doesn’t make any Jewish references, as far as I know). This could be accredited to a ton of things: John dumped him at a Jewish friend’s house when he was kid, Bobby picked it up from Rufus and Dean got it from Bobby, a past girlfriend was Jewish, etc.
Or, some of these characters still die, but they get more screen time and better plots.

The End: extraordinary true stories that inspired right-to-die comedy drama
by: Frances Whiting, News Corp Australia Network for Geelong Advertiser
Writing confronting new comedy-drama series The End took Samantha Strauss back to her own beginnings.
Back to Queensland’s Gold Coast and its shimmering light; back to her childhood home with E Street actor Marcus Graham smouldering from posters on her bedroom walls; back to her ballet shoes, tied with pink ribbon, and back to a family story that has whispered in her ear for decades.
The End — produced for Foxtel by See Saw Films, the team behind award-winning films The King’s Speech and Lion, plus television series Top of The Lake — is an exploration of how we live, die, and all the messy business that goes on in between.
Tumblr media
Back to her beginning for The End, screenwriter Sam Strauss. Picture: David Swift
It centres on young palliative care doctor Kate Brennan (Frances O’Connor), a woman devoted to prolonging her patients’ lives as long as possible.
Kate’s mother Edie Henley (Dame Harriet Walter), however, has other ideas. Following decades of unhappiness, and an unwelcome discovery about her late husband’s fidelity, Edie decides to take her own life.
The attempt is unsuccessful, messy and distressing so Kate — living on the Gold Coast, having long ago fled the small pocket of England where Edie still resides — decides to bring her mother to Australia.
Moving Edie to a five star, Gold Coast retirement village, despite its manicured gardens and aqua aerobics classes proves, not unlike Edie’s unsuccessful suicide attempt, both messy and distressing for both women.
But like the light that dances over the Gold Coast’s sweeping beaches just before dawn and dusk — a light locals know as the “magic hour” — it is also the start of something equally magical.
Tumblr media
For Strauss, increasingly in demand as a scriptwriter and producer, and the co-creator of the hit Australian teen drama series Dance Academy, writing The End, was, in part, her own family’s story. It was also a springboard to the ongoing debate about the right to live – and die – as we want to.
“I grew up in Southport on the Gold Coast,” Strauss, now 40, says from her home in Sydney.
“So filming there was a homecoming of sorts for me.
“I moved back in with my parents for a time, it was great, I got my washing done and food cooked, it was heaven,” Strauss laughs.
“I loved filming there. It’s been a mission of mine to show the Gold Coast in its true beauty, I don’t think there’s ever been a show that’s done that, stripped away all the glitz, to go into its Hinterland, and its quieter places, and of course its beautiful light, that magic hour.
“We did one incredible scene with 100 nude extras at dawn at Currumbin Beach,” Strauss laughs, “and I think what we all really enjoyed was filming at a retirement village in Hope Island, where we used the residents as cast members, and they were absolutely wonderful.”
Tumblr media
Strauss’s love letter to the Gold Coast opens with a harrowing scene of Edie’s botched suicide attempt thousands of kilometres away at her home in England, a scene that has its origins in Strauss’s own family history.
“I had a grandmother whose husband died by suicide and she had also gone through cancer and all sorts of things.
“She had been living in New South Wales, and my family were on the Gold Coast, so she moved there to live in a retirement village.
“She was 80, and she had this incredible brain, and artist’s soul, and when she first arrived she was not happy, she wore brown dresses and was sort of all hunched over.
“I remember my mother and father were worried about her, and my mother said, ‘We need to treat this place like high school and get her into the cool group’,” Strauss laughs.
“Not the Queen Bee set, no, but the naughty ones, the rebels. Mum bought a round of drinks for everyone, there was a great restaurant there and quite a party scene, and away she went.”
Six months after her arrival, Strauss chuckles, her grandmother had swapped her shapeless, brown shifts for bright red dresses, was dancing on table tops, and had acquired both a zippy new car and a best friend named Pamela.
Tumblr media
Pamela is delightfully played in the series by beloved Australian actress Noni Hazelhurst, who viewers first meet when she greets Edie with a Welcome basket and a cheeky “We’ve got champagne, we’ve got gin, we’ve got Xanax …”
Strauss shows a nuanced understanding of the rhythm of retirement homes like Emerald Fields; beneath the table top dancing there are stories of loves lost and longing; of lives well lived and otherwise, and raw, honest exchanges on declining health and approaching death.
This is because Strauss herself became a part of that rhythm, moving in with her grandmother at her retirement village, where the kindling for The End was first found among its Zimmer frames and zumba classes.
“ I was in that strange place where I was a bit lost,” Strauss remembers.
“I had just finished my film degree (at the Gold Coast’s Bond University) and she had a spare bedroom, so I moved in with her for a while.
“I really liked all the conversations I had there, one 80-year-old woman told me how she had worn out her vibrator, and I liked the idea that you can change your attitude at the very end.
Tumblr media
Life and soul … Noni Hazelhurst plays the sassy Pamela. Picture: supplied
“I liked the idea that you can grow old in a way that is fun and not depressing.
“Obviously where my grandmother lived was a very nice place, but I like that it felt like a time of not withering away, but growing.
“There’s a scene where Edie puts a torch under her chin and says ‘I’m a glow worm, watch me glow,’ and that’s what it felt like for us watching our grandmother just sort of blossom again there.”
Strauss says it was also a time of reflection among the residents, including her grandmother, on dying.
“Some of them went to workshops on how to end their lives, they followed (euthanasia advocate) Philip Nitschke, and they were very clear on what they wanted, as was my grandmother.
“When it was the time of her choosing to go, she wanted a glass of whiskey and a Nembutal and that was her plan.”
Instead Strauss’s grandmother’s cancer returned and she died soon after the diagnosis.
“I always had that discussion with her on how she wanted it to be.
“My father is a doctor and death and the right to have a say in your own death has always been a very open discussion in my family. Dying with dignity is something many people believe in and want to happen, as is palliative care, and I have enormous respect for palliative care nurses and doctors.
Tumblr media
The right-to-die debate is brought into focus in The End by Brooke Satchwell, who plays one of Kate’s patients. Picture: supplied
“I wanted to show both points of view with The End, and a lot of it is about this hard stuff, but I hope it’s done with a lens that finds the humanity in it, in the idea that whenever things seem impossible, there is light as well.”
Strauss has had experience with that too, turning a very dark time in her own life into light when at just 18 years old, and a promising ballet dancer, she broke her back.
“I had danced all my life, and was pretty determined to make it my career.
“I danced for about 50 hours a week in a hot tin shed in Bundall (a Gold Coast Suburb) with these truly terrifying teachers who would just yell at you.
“There was no nurturing and it was hard for my sensitive, writer’s soul, but I loved it.”
Then, Strauss says, one day during an outdoors training session, an instructor “pushed me too hard” and she broke a vertebrae in her back, shattering both her movement and her dreams.
“Basically I lay on a couch for a year, in between X Rays and treatment, and I can see now I was probably depressed, while my parents looked after me. They were totally there for me, and it can’t have been easy.”
But Strauss’s couch time was not wasted; she read obsessively, escaping to other worlds when her own seemed so hopeless.
Tumblr media
Sam Strauss relied on her own experiences to create The End. Picture: Mark Taylor
“I read this book called Alex, the story of an Olympic swimmer by the New Zealand author called Tessa Duder. Because I could relate to it, that book saved me,” Strauss says emphatically.
In the book the title character is an athlete who must rise above personal tragedy to achieve her dreams; and somewhere in its pages, Strauss too found the strength to get off the couch and chase hers.
“My mum made me get off the couch, actually,” Strauss laughs, “but reading all those stories made me realise I wanted to be a part of that, to be someone who told stories too, and so I enrolled at Bond to do a film degree.”
One of Strauss’s first assignments at university was to write a short film. She set hers in a retirement village, and so the first flickers of what would become The End were born.
Like the series she would one day create about it, Strauss too, has come full circle.
The End debuts on Foxtel on February 2. Sunday, only in The Binge Guide: exclusive interview with The End’s Harriet Walters and Frances O’Connor.

After a long and painful process, Cole got you up to speed about everything there is to know. Before it was too late, you three headed down to the funeral home only to discover it was covered in demonic symbols. The living walked past, not noticing the symbols at all. The walls of the funeral home are covered in glowing blue diagrams, mostly six-sided figures, some in circles and some in squares, all with lines through them and squiggles inside the triangles thus formed.
“This looks like New Jack City. Can nobody can see this?” Dean asked.
“Maybe it's demon invisible ink. Only see it in the veil,” you shrugged.
“Any idea what it's for?”
“Only one way to find out,” you said before walking inside the home. Going around the stairs, you didn’t find anything out of the ordinary until you came to the main room where you saw a demon guarding two reapers inside an eight-pointed star with squiggles on each point. Inside the star was Tessa and another reaper.
“Dude check me out,” Dean whispers before walking to the man. After the first few steps, he flickered away only to reappear behind the man. He tapped him on his shoulder, only to punch him in the face, knocking him down. Dean flickered away so when the man stood up, he didn’t see anyone standing there. Until suddenly Sam appeared and got in a punch only for you to appear right next to him, punching him in the jaw. Dean appeared, and the demon began crawling away in pain behind a coffin on the dais.
“You know, this ghost thing, it's, it's kind of rad,” Dean chuckled. Out of the blue, another man, presumably a demon, came out from behind the curtain carrying a chain, clearly in pain. The first demon jumped over the coffin and out of the way just as the second demon pulls the chains tight, hooking it onto a candle stand.
“This is iron,” you groaned, knowing it would do some damage if you touched it. From across the room, an older man walked into the room before smirking.
“Boys, lady, find the place okay?” he asked as his eyes turned white. Alastair. After turning them back to normal, he walked up to the chain but didn’t touch it. One demon handed him a shotgun which he cocked it. Pointing it at Dean, he shot him causing him to disintegrate.
“Dean!”
“Rock salt's not so much fun anymore, is it?” the demon laughed as Dean reappeared.
“Alastair. You bastard.”
“Well, go on. Why don't you try some of your mojo on me now, hotshot?” he smirked at Sam. “It's hard to get it up when you're not wearing your meat, huh?”
“Go to hell,” Sam growled.
“Ah, if only I could,” he said as he walked away to the reapers. “But they just keep sending me back up to this arctic shithole.”
“To kill death?” you asked.
“No, to kill death twice. It takes two to break a seal. I figured another one would show up, though. They're like lemmings,” he chuckled as he cocked the shotgun before shooting Sam. Just like Dean, he disintegrated into nothing, and Alastair walked back up to the chains.
“By the way, it's, uh, good to see you again, Dean. Y/N.”
“You can shoot us all you want, but you can't kill us,” Dean growled just as Sam appeared with his arms wrapped around his torso.
“Ah, is that so?” he asked just as he shot you, turning you to dust. Pain surrounded your body for the time you spent gone until you reappeared, and then the pain died down.
“Pamela,” you whispered, hoping she was alright. The demon laughed before grabbing a scythe, turning it over in his hands as he waited for midnight to come.
“Anywho... Moon's in the right spot. The board is set. Let's get started, shall we?”
“You're gonna kill a reaper with that? It's little on the nose, don't you think?” Dean asked, trying to stall.
“Is it? An old friend lent it to me. You know, he doesn't really ride a pale horse? But he does have three amigos, and they're just jonesing for the apocalypse,” he explained as he knelt by the old man reaper. “It pays to have friends in low places,” Alastair grabbed the demon by the collar and hauled him up, putting the scythe behind his neck. “Don’t you think?”
“Hic cruor messorius, illud sigillum, quod luciferem reverendum obstringit, aperiat ut resurgat!” Alastair sliced the reapers neck, killing him instantly. As soon as that happened, a blue-white light shone, causing you to shield your eyes. The demon lowered the reaper to the floor before walking over to Tessa and grabbing her, doing the exact same thing to her.
Sam nudged you and Dean before looking at the chandelier above the trap. Getting his drift, you started to concentrate on the chandelier so you could drop it to the floor and either hurt Alastair, or free Tessa. Alastair began the spell again, and you stared at the chandelier before it broke, dropping to the ground and scratching the trap which freed Tessa.
She flickered away only to appear by the chains. Removing them, you smirked at Alastair before flickering away yourself. Reappearing outside of the funeral home, you didn’t notice Sam with you.
“Where's your brother?”
“We’ll go find him, you get out of here,” Dean said and she didn’t argue with that. Quickly leaving the scene of the crime, you walked all over town before entering an alleyway. Sam was nowhere to be seen, and as soon as you passed another building, you heard his voice again.
“You can't run,” Alastair smirked, “Dean, Y/N. Not from me.”
The demon made advancements to you and Dean, but before he could get to you, bolts of lightning struck him, and when they were gone so was the demon.
“What the hell was that? What happened?” you asked.
“I happened,” the angel’s gruff voice said from behind you. “You, Dean, and Sam just saved a seal. We captured Alastair. Y/N, this was a victory.”
“Well, no thanks to you,” Dean scoffed.
“What makes you say that?”
“Were you here the whole time?”
“Enough of it.”
“Well, thanks for your help with the rock salt,” you glared.
“That script on the funeral home—we couldn't penetrate it.”
“That was angel proofing?”
“Why do you think I recruited you, Dean, and Sam in the first place?”
“What do you mean you recruited us?”
“That wasn't your father Bobby who called, Y/N. It wasn't Bobby who told Sam about the seal.”
“That was you?” Dean asked, surprised.
“If you want our help, why the hell didn't you just ask?”
“Because whatever I ask, you seem to do the exact opposite.”
“So, what now, huh? The people in this town, they just gonna start dying again?” you asked.
“Yes.”
“These are good people. What, you think you can make a few exceptions?”
“To everything there is a season.”
“You made an exception for me, for Y/N,” Dean sighed.
“You're both different,” he said right before you heard a flap of wings, and Castiel was gone. As soon as he was gone, Tessa appeared.
“Dean? Y/N? I could use your help.”
“With what?” you asked.
Seeing Cole’s mother cry over her dead son made your heart break. When Tessa brought you and Dean over to his house, you knew Cole had to move on. His mother was in so much pain.
“Hey, Cole,” Tessa said, making the young boy swiftly turn around. He looked at you with pained eyes.
“You promised,” he sniffled. Walking over to Cole, you bent down to his level before staring into his eyes.
“Don’t you see how unhappy she is?”
“That's why I want to stay with her.”
“As long as she feels you around, she’ll be in pain because she can’t let go. Because you can’t let her go.”
“Why won't anybody tell me what's on the other side?”
“Because I don’t know what’s on the other side. No one does but going there is a hell of a lot better than staying over here.”
“Why?” he grew even more sad.
“Because one day you’re still going to be here, and she won’t, and they’ll be nothing left for you here. It’s okay to be scared.”
“I’m not scared,” he sniffled as he stepped back from you. Standing up, you sighed and looked at Dean for some help.
“We're all scared. That's the big secret. We're all scared.”
“Aren’t you two coming?”
“It’s not our time, but I'm sure I'll be there sooner than you think,” Dean answered. Cole looked back at his mom before going over to Tessa. He hugged her, and she used her powers to bring him to the other side. As soon as he was gone, his mother didn’t look so sad anymore.
“Look out for that boy,” Dean said once you joined him.
“Look out for yourself, Dean. Both of you.”
“What do you mean?” you asked.
“The angels have something good in store for both of you. A second chance. Really? 'Cause I'm pretty sure, deep down, you both know something nasty's coming down the road. Trust your instincts, Dean, Y/N. There's no such thing as miracles.”
“What are you saying?” you asked, but she vanished without another word. Looking at Dean, you didn’t know whether to believe her or not just as your world got ripped from you. One moment you were in Cole’s house, the next you were gasping awake on the bed in the motel room. Dean wasn’t that far behind. Looking at Sam and Pamela, you noticed blood coming out of her abdomen as she sipped a drink.
“What happened?” you asked as you got up.
“Dean, where’s Tessa?” Sam asked.
“No, I can help you, I can heal you,” you got tears at this.
“Stop,” Pamela said in a stern voice.
“You don't deserve this,” you sniffled.
“Yeah, I don't. I told you I didn't want anything to do with this. Do me a favor? Tell that bastard Bobby Singer to go to hell for ever introducing me to you three in the first place,” she coughed, clearly in pain.
“Take it easy, Pamela. If it's any consolation, you're going to a better place,” Dean tried to help.
“You’re lying, but what the hell, right? Everybody's got to go some time,” she sighed before beckoning Sam closer to her. When he got close enough, he began whispering in his ear. Whatever she said, it freaked him out because he was wide-eyed and trembling.
He pulled away as soon as she started coughing again. She leaned back on the headboard of Sam’s bed just as a trickle of blood ran out of her mouth. She became still after that, and you knew Tessa had reaped her soul.
“Pamela!” Dean yelled, but her head only lolled to the side.
“What did she say to you?” you asked Sam, but he only looked away. “Samuel Winchester, what did she say to you?!”

As Battalion Chief with Lawrence Fire & Medical, Dean comes under investigation when he makes a dangerous and impulsive decision, defying his superiors and abandoning the team he is supposed to lead. Sight and Circumstance
Pamela’s first visitor came when she was four. It was her grandmother, a few days after she had died. Pamela didn’t understand death, so she didn’t say goodbye to her grandmother, and she thought her beloved Nonna was just there to play.
It wasn’t until another figure came up and tapped Nonna on the shoulder and told her to say goodbye to Pamela, that she knew that it was the last time she would see her grandmother. Nonna looked at her granddaughter, told her to be brave, that she had an angel watching her, and held her arms out for a hug. Pamela hugged her Nonna tightly and promised that she wouldn’t cry.
Pamela’s parents didn’t believe her at first. She was four, and children always had imaginary friends. But when they changed frequently from Nonna, to a young man who was killed in a car accident, to a young boy who had lost his fight with cancer, they started to become wary of her.
There was no solace from her family when her visitors and visions became more frequent. They would call her names like freak and monster. They would force her to church and confession. The Pastor did an exorcism to rid her of the demons that possessed her. Modern medicine did nothing for her.
She ran away for the first time at 16. A spirit had come to her, a young girl who was looking for her mom. The little girl hadn’t realized that she died, and Pamela took the time to comfort her and help her accept that she was going to Heaven. A reaper had come to take the little girl, and they were so kind to her, but it didn’t help the heartbreak that Pamela was feeling. That little girl was loved, she was going to be missed, and she was taken away too soon. If she died, her parents would be relieved. After the reaper left, she ran around her room in a frenzy, packing clothes and necessities into her school bag. She told her mom she was going to the library to study, not that her mother paid her mind, and left.
Pamela had made it to the next town over before any issues came up. There had never been any reason for her to come to this town, so she figured it would be a clever place to hide for the evening before she kept running. What she didn’t expect were the two guys that followed her in their pickup truck.
As the truck rumbled up next to her, the guy driving whistled at her. “Hello there gorgeous. Need a lift?”
“Nope. Almost to my aunt’s house.”
“Really?” The other guy in the passenger seat leaned forward and over. “You sure about that?”
“Yep. Just a few more blocks and I’m there.” Pamela squared her shoulders to appear more confident.
The guys looked at her and then looked at each other. The passenger guy continued his taunting. “See, there’s no homes up ahead. Just a few warehouses and businesses.”
The driver leaned out of his window further as his passenger slid back to his side of the truck. “How about you hop on in the back. You’re clearly lost pretty thing.”
Pamela heard a car door opening. As soon as she heard the door close, she attempted to bolt, but the driver had grabbed her arm as she had turned around. The passenger had sprinted around the truck to grab her. She screamed, but she knew it would be useless. The guys had called her bluff and they were in an area of town that was scarcely populated.
The driver was getting out of his truck when lightning struck a nearby pole. The guys froze while Pamela tried to escape from the passenger guy’s arms.
“Let her go.” A silky voice whipped through the air, and another woman was standing where there hadn’t been one previously. She was light and lithe, but a fierceness emanated from her, intimidating the guys tormenting Pamela.
“This ain’t your business lady.” Driver guy spoke up, his chin jutted out in defiance. “We’re just taking her home.”
Lightning struck again as the woman walked closer, and she pulled a scythe out from behind her back. “Do not, make me tell you again.”
The guy holding Pamela let her go and ran past his friend, diving into the truck. The driver backed up slowly and got in, before slamming his door shut and gunning it out of the area.
Pamela had collapsed from fear and shock as the other woman walked up to her. “Pamela? Are you ok?” She offered her hand down, which Pamela hesitantly took.
“Do I know you?”
The woman looked at herself and smiled. It was kind and soft, much like the rest of her face. While her presence before had been large and intimidating, she wasn’t much taller than Pamela. “Not in this form you don’t.” She emitted a small laugh, which caused Pamela’s heart to skip a beat.
“Not in this form?” Pamela parroted back, her confusion evident. Even though she should probably be terrified, she found herself oddly at ease. “You take other forms?”
“You could say that. But I much prefer this one.” The woman let go of Pamela’s hand and carded her fingers through her short black hair before pulling gently at the leather jacket she was wearing. “I’m your Reaper, Pamela.”
“My what?” Pamela backed up slowly. “Are you going to kill me?”
The Reaper held up her finger. “That sounded more impressive and explanatory in my head. May I start over?”
Pamela nodded vigorously. “I would prefer that actually.”
“I am a Reaper. I am assigned to you. You are my Medium.”
It suddenly clicked. “You helped the little girl today.”
“Yes, and every other spirit you talk to. I help ferry them across. You’re the one who convinces them that it’s time to go.”
“What’s your name?”
“I have many names. Some you can’t pronounce, some you can. Recently? I’ve been Tessa.”
“So, Tessa. Are you like a Guardian Angel?”
“Nope. Reaper.” She swung her scythe around again. “Angels have the big fluffy wings and answer to the man upstairs.”
“And you answer to? Satan?”
Tessa scoffed. “No. Death is their own entity. Angels asked us to protect mediums, since you work closely with the spirits that won’t go home.” She smiled softly at Pamela. “And you, Pamela, as I mentioned before, are my medium. I won’t let anything happen to you.” She paused. “I’m sorry I upset you earlier that you ran.”
“You didn’t upset me.”
“Did your interaction with the little girl upset you?”
“It wasn’t me talking with her that upset me.” Pamela pulled at a string on her hoodie. “It was me comparing myself to her.”
“You don’t believe that anyone will miss you if you left.”
Pamela fought back tears. “Am I wrong? You’ve been with me for how long Tessa?” Pamela paused, waiting for an answer. “How long?”
“Since your power manifested.”
“So, when you’re with me, you’ve seen how I’ve been treated. You’ve seen what they’ve done to me.” Pamela let the tears fall freely, not bothering to wipe them away. “You know I’m not crazy. But my own family has put me through exorcisms. They’ve tried to lock me away. I’ve been on how many medications since I was 8?” She heatedly stared Tessa in the eye. “Look at me and tell me that they would miss me.”
Tessa closed the small gap between them and gently caressed Pamela’s cheek. “I would miss you if something ever happened to you.” She leaned up and softly kissed Pamela’s forehead. “Let’s get you home. I will be there more for you, so you know you have someone who cares about you.” Tessa reluctantly stopped touching Pamela’s cheek to take her hand, before whispering the words to return them home.

The Great SPN Meta Scavenger Hunt: Round 2  - The Exclamatories, Expletives and Key Words/Phrases Listicle
(or TL;DR - “Suck as it may, our perky nipples are defcon screwed with signs of douchery, so shut your cakehole, you whackjob, before I make your posh spice ass have a code brown moment and use you for an angel condom. Asshat.”)
[No abstract here because writing them is hard and f*ck that sh*t it is 4 am.]
Introduction:
Thanks to @elizabethrobertajones for kickstarting my “SPN Character Voice Database” project with this challenge. The verbal creativity and qualities of each character’s “voice’ has always been one of the things that has greatly entertained me about Supernatural. So, in attempting to write SPN fanfic, I am pretty obsessed about making character’s dialogue *sound* right. @chiisana-sukima  and I were chatting recently about our struggles to 'write’ the boys swearing convincingly (I make then swear lamely and she has to take swears out) and BOTH of us are struggling with making Sam swear right (tip – turns out, that’s because he doesn’t very much). [I think this is the presenting problem or sorta the research question, but again, 4 am and not getting paid so ;P]
In the spirit of scientific investigation, I have begun to address this problem in a typically “academic” way – I collected and analyzed unique character language patterns data for all 12 of the initial SPN episodes (using Excel and everything). Analysis consisted of *highly subjective* qualitative and quantitative methodologies using the rubric below (thanks to @k-vichan for the rubric framework from their “Dean the Action Hero” entry)
Review of Existing Research:
As far as I know – this research is unique in fandom – if someone has already done this, PLEASE let me know so I can do something ELSE with my time.
Definitions of Key Terms:
Exclamatory – ‘throw-away’ words which, if removed from the sentence, have no real effect – they are there for punctuation, character flavor, etc. and often start or end a sentence. Includes ‘pet words’ for people like son, boy, douche, Giraffe, etc. For my purposes, I did NOT count ah, well, alright or OK, because EVERYONE USES THEM ALL THE TIME in this show. Some words counted in this category ONLY if they were NOT used ‘correctly’ in context – examples (correct usage in brackets):  Hell (the place), God (the person/entity), hey (to get you to turn around), c’mon (to get you to come with someone) and man (to indicate a male person).
Expletive – swears, substitute swears and blasphemes (technically all exclamatories, but in a class by themselves). These were casually assigned ‘strength’ by how much I got in trouble for saying them when a kid (words like friggin’ were counted for strength as if they were the swear they replaced). We were not a religious family so blasphemes were all counted as lamer than more scatological swears.
Key Words and Phrases – Crack stuff said by characters that ‘define their voice’ – things that make them uniquely them. Fun phrases and sayings. Includes innocuous stuff like “Seriously?”, “You’ve gotta be kidding me,” and chick. Sometimes a colloquialism was counted, like ‘ain’t been’ because it seemed unique to the character. NOTE: Cas is a special case here – his entries tended to be overly formal words no one else ever really says OR cases where he starts to use human idioms at ALL.
Method:
Re-watched all initial episodes over the course of 5 days and recorded all entries in the above 3 categories by character, with extras grouped as a block. Then grouped all recurring characters of note in a “friends and family” group for easier analysis, creating 4 main groups: Dean, Sam, F&F and Xtras. These four groups were then analyzed in the following categories and assigned scores by one completely biased reviewer.
Quantity - actual # of items recorded across ALL characters. Repetitions were counted individually.
Variety - (scale of 1-5) measures how unique and interesting items are for this episode, as well as ‘strength’ of expletives.
Originality - 5 points per item that made me chuckle or raised my eyebrow the 1st time I watched the episode
Sam vs Dean - % of Sam items to Dean items as an integer. Sam hardly swears, so we want to give him lots of credit for when he DOES do so. This also serves as a measure of ‘balance’ in verbal creativity for the episode.
Family & Friends - (scale of 1-5) QVO (see above) across other core characters (+1 bonus point if Cas had ANY)
Xtras - (scale of 0-5) QVO across any Xtras
Impress me – 5 points per character whose performance REALLY stood out to me (purely subjective, don’t argue with the researcher)
Controlling for Bias: @chiisana-sukima and I also discussed how the writer for each episode had a lot to do with language, so we’ve included that data in the results. Other items that may affect the data include a) how much silence there was built into the script, b) how MANY characters appeared in the episode, and c) how plot affected the character (Demon!Dean, Demon!Bobby, Leviathan!Cas, dead-hallucination Bobby-in-Sam’s-head, etc.). For my purposes, if they LOOKED and tried to ACT like the character, their words were categorized for that character. But, essentially, I didn’t sweat this stuff and did whatever I wanted, because no one is paying me, so there.
Results:
SO – no surprise this is stupidly long and full of illustrative screencaps. Read below the cut for the Fun stuff! {Oh, and pre-emptively: “Screw you, my math is perfect.”}

Conclusions:
In general, it looks like writers wanted to keep to at LEAST above 100 on the “@Durenjtmusings Verbal Inventiveness Rubric” for decent verbal variety in a script. Both Carver and Kripke were pretty good at this. Dabb should take note.
Ranking of episodes:
Worst - 6.1 Gamble – 61  (note that both Gamble’s scores were low – not judging, just holding it up for ridicule)
12.1 Dabb - 92
4.1 Kripke - 96.5
7.1 Gamble - 97
3.1 Kripke - 100
9.1 Carver - 106
5.1 Kripke - 110
11.1 Carver - 115
2.1 Kripke - 117.5
8.1 Carver & 1.1 Kripke – 142  (Both good showings, although I like 8.1 better, personally.)
Best - 10.1 Carver - 212.5 (Aaaaannd, Crowley wins this episode the trophy – who is surprised? Plus someone hire that Gas and Sip counter guy - comedy timing gold. Also, of note, Demon!Dean talked less, and less creatively -  letting his sneering and violence say everything for him, evidently. Because of this, however, Sam EQUALLED Dean for verbal inventiveness this episode, for perfect brother balance. Yea for the Mark.)
Bonus: Results Presented Chronologically – in case you care:
1.1 Kripke - 142
2.1 Kripke - 117.5
3.1 Kripke - 100
4.1 Kripke - 96.5
5.1 Kripke - 110
6.1 Gamble - 61
7.1 Gamble - 97
8.1 Carver - 142
9.1 Carver - 106
10.1 Carver - 212.5
11.1 Carver - 115
12.1 Dabb - 92
Final Thoughts: I have begun to note a number of fun cross-episode meta things – like Sam tends to echo expletives that someone else has already said in an episode, Angels are REALLY boring verbally except for Zachariah, and Dean is way more verbally creative when he’s just come back from exile (hell, purgatory, etc.) – but I’m holding on to this until I have more data on the 250+ episodes I have left to analyze.
Extra Credit for the Obsessed Experts: Go back over JUST Dean’s collected words and see how much of the episode you can visualize from his verbal creativeness alone.
Also - this was fun and I am clearly a compulsive academic…someone please stop me before it is too late.
