Peeling the tape away to reveal clean edges is one of my favorite moments. It’s like a magic trick, I said to friend and fellow painter Julie Green — and it looks even more like one filmed in time lapse. Enjoy! ✨
I will post the paintings individually with titles in the coming days, so stay tuned.

This is an animated depiction of my last bout of sleep paralysis, right when the quarantine first started. Apparently, I’m not alone in having some messed up sleep experiences, people have been dealing with strange dreams throughout the whole pandemic.
Pretty late that night, I woke up to find my body more or less locked in place. At the foot of my bed, there was a man in a hoodie, with his face completely in shadow. Of course, thinking I had some sort of home intruder, I tried to speak. With some difficulty, I was only able to manage a small hum.
As I kept trying to speak, the man would keep saying something to the effect of “be quiet”, over and over. Eventually, I managed to force a gasp of air, after which the man instantly disappeared in a puff of shadows, and I was able to move again.
So basically a pretty textbook case of sleep paralysis.

MORE CRAZY #PANDEMICDREAMS FROM LAST NIGHT:
1) I was driving past Tyson's Corner I in the middle of the night, when I see a makeshift ice cream shop🍦 tent propped up along a 4-way intersection. I pulled over out of curiosity, had to wait through a long line and large crowd of people buying their ice cream at this little tent. I buy a large tub of white (vanilla? coconut?) ice cream, put it in my trunk and drive off...
Tumblr media
2) Then I kept driving down the main road that night. Suddenly I saw what looks like a giant log cabin along the road, again I pull over out of curiosity. Outside the cabin looks rather bland and dreary, dimly lit by a few street lights and surrounded by more modern-looking square buildings. But inside, it's like a giant Christmas market! Christmas lights everywhere, warmly lit interiors, fake snow, bustling crowds, rooms designed to look like a log cabin. Inside are several stores selling all sorts of delicious goodies (mainly sweets🍭🍬 and even drizzled popcorn🍿)! After exploring a bit and deciding to go home, I ask a staff member -- he had a striped red-and-white vest, sandy blonde hair parted in the middle, and a goatee -- for directions, he helpfully directs me out of the main building. But once outside I'm left on my own...
Tumblr media
3) I keep wandering around these general store grounds, trying to find the way back to my car. Then I come upon another strange building: again it looks like nothing unusual on the outside. But I could see through the open door it looks like an old castle. I go in, walk up the winding stairs, and find myself in a small stone room. Inside is a collection of old artifacts: in particular a treasure chest, a telescope, a sextant, basically all things that would be used for sailing. I look through the telescope, in the glass I see a scene of a ship on the ocean...
Tumblr media
4)...Suddenly I find myself wandering through the woods. In a random clearing is a large tree , with birdhouse-like housing units dangling on the branches🌳. Was this a  treehouse or a birdhouse for giant birds? Either way it creeped me out and I hurried along. Had to climb up some rocks and dirt mounds. Some passersby see me but do nothing to help. As I'm struggling to climb up some rocks, some strangers appear above me to help pull me up...
Tumblr media
5)...then they bring me to a pirate ship⚓️⛵️. Except there's no pirates. Instead it's entire crew of Game of Thrones characters! As we sail to our destination, I see (what looks like) giant statues wading through the ocean...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6)...We drop anchor in the UK🇬🇧. Suddenly I'm taken to a hotel in the middle of some city late at night. From there I try to get back home. I wander around town, asking for general directions and popping into various small shops. It's raining.  When I reach an electric goods store, I get a random customer to call up a taxi for me. My taxi arrives, which is shared by a group of people. More people arrive to my designated taxi, guess I'm sharing with them too. As we get in, a passenger opens the taxi trunk and puts in a bunch of bagged vegetables. Among those vegetables I see a bag of fresh marijuana leaves (DISCLAIMER: I DON'T USE MARIJUANA). I get into the front passenger's seat, the only empty seat at this point. Suddenly, I realize I don't have the proper UK currency to pay with! The driver notices me panicking and asks if I have payment. I tell him yes to allay his worries, search frantically through the wallet I had. There were some cards, a few US dollars....

7) THEN I WAKE UP.

Pandemic dreams: Have you been having unusual dreams lately? Here’s why
Pandemic dreams: Have you been having unusual dreams lately? Here’s why
Ever become a large Y-shaped antibody to bodily struggle the novel Coronavirus and its many bulbous projections? This isn’t a scene straight out of a low finances children’ sci-fi film: it’s from a vivid dream a buddy had just lately. It appeared uncommon. Until I requested round.
Because it seems, many amongst us (together with yours actually) have been having vivid, usually weird goals…

Vivid ‘pandemic dreams’ and nightmares are keeping nation awake during coronavirus outbreak - Wed, 08 Apr 2020 PST
Something called “pandemic dreams” is being blamed for keeping stressed-out Americans up at night during the coronavirus outbreak. These dreams are described as vivid, weird and occasionally horrifying on Twitter, where examples are being shared via #pandemicdreams. Heather Lee Birdsong, “A Wandering and Sometimes Purposeless Way”, 2020, acryla-gouache on paper, 3 3/8 x 2 1/8 inches.
I miss the carelessness implied in the title here. Simply walking around now requires vigilance, and this state reminds me very much of an earlier time in my life, when I was unsafe and a target wherever I went, even home. I am grateful that there is space and time in my life when constant vigilance is not required, when I feel safe. Some people never get that, and I wish everyone could.

Another #PANDEMICDREAM last night:
I was sailing with Anna & Kristoff from “Frozen” (for some reason), in a wooden boat in what looked like a giant indoor pool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We’re told it’s a river to a magical island. Ahead of us is the island, covered in snow and trees with magical glowing lights. Again very Christmas-y, like in my last dream. Suddenly, someone (NOT Elsa surprisingly) freezes all the water surrounding us, we walk upon the newly frozen river towards the island.
Tumblr media
Then , Kristoff points out we need to dive into the river to get something. We do that and swim as deep as possible —super dark and freezing cold — before coming up for air. While we’re catching our breath, someone suggests drinking “Whaletime Spice” as a means of recovery.
Tumblr media
I learn that Whaletime Spice is actually a heavily spiced ale that helps recover from illness on long sea voyages. The name derives partly from a thing called “Whaletime Sickness”. But before I can find out what that is... I WAKE UP.

“Long Spoken Of”, 2020, acryla-gouache on paper, 3 3/8 x 2 1/8 inches. By me (Heather Lee Birdsong).
I’ve been making these tiny paintings to focus my nervous energy, create little windows into other worlds (half-imaginary, loosely based on nearby Forest Park, perched atop — or holding in place, rather — Tualatin Mountain). Hoping and dreaming that the destruction wrought by this pandemic and its mismanagement (callous and cruel) could result in building a better, more just society, instead of a scramble back to the status quo.
