Wait what was the Weeb-Sea?
If you don't want to watch the video (it's really a YouTube short), basically the Los Angeles Convention Center, the place where Anime Expo is held, was horrifically over-capacity during last year's con. To the point that people were passing out from lack of space and air, which is doubly bad when there were already people passing out at Linecon (the 'joke' name given to the insane lines that form on Day 0 from people picking up their badges) due to lack of water and places to shelter from the heat.
Because what a lot of people don't realize is that AX is held during the first weekend of JULY. Southern California is already heating up and we're only in May, let alone how much temperatures surge up by then. Shit, coming home from my Naija produce shopping today, I was already feeling the beginning symptoms of Heat Exhaustion (though someone could say that 'oh, you were carrying heavy bags and boxes across a parking lot and you didn't eat breakfast).
But, all that is besides the fact when AX refuses to put a cap on the number of tickets they sell for the event. It's like ClassicManD, the guy in the Short, was saying 'you can get turned away at the gate because they're at capacity', as well as the TikToki clip he used where the girl was saying 'the only reason we got through is because somebody was having a panic-attack'.
Hell, in fact, rather than address the ticket issue, they tried to put a bandaid over a hemorrhage by establishing Anime Expo: Chibi - A smaller version of AX held in Ontario during the off-season. Except, as I mentioned to a friend when we were talking about some of the bullshit that went down at AX: Chibi's first bout (AI 'Art' crowding out Artist Alley and minors being put in danger during cosplay contests, oh my!), what about people who specifically want to go to AX for events and panels that are only being held at AX proper?
I doubt that Japanese VAs are going to fly out for both a convention in July and November. What few animators could travel would prioritize AX over AX: Chibi.
So, again, you just end up with people buying tickets to AX which, of course, due to AX not limiting ticket-sales, just causes the whole thing to cycle in on itself.

Trinkets, 66: Interesting baubles, semi magical objects and items touched by mystery.
A glass box, its clear panels leaded at the seams, its trio of locks glinting gold. Warm blue lights dance frantically inside it, seem to beat against the glass walls like trapped wings. The keys are nowhere to be found. Knowledgeable PC’s can identify it as fey made.
A Random Musical Instrument that always sounds like a Random Music instrument when played.
A vellum document folded and sealed with a red wax seal as ornate as any used by the nobility. If unsealed it is a formal invitation to the unnamed bearer and a small part of guests to the 60th birthday of a Chodo Contague, which is occurring 2d4+2 months from when the letter was found. Knowledgeable PC’s are aware that Congangue is a major crime boss of a largest city in the nearby country.
A blackened iron coffer that has seen better days. The coffer is locked and must be picked or smashed open. Inside are three cones of incense wrapped in sanctified, unholy cloth stitched with golden signs of Chaos.
A detailed sketch of a halfling maiden wielding an impressive sword.
A signed receipt slip from a black-market pawn shop including an evaluation for the item sold into hock. To the untrained eye, the receipt lists the sale of one plain silver ring for 2 gold pieces by Mary Goodwife at John’s Honest Pawnshop. The entire note is written in Cant, the language of thieves and mentions that interesting contraband can be purchased discreetly at John’s Honest Pawnshop to those coming in asking to buy Mary an engagement ring.
A heavy pleated kilt, whose green and red tartan pattern identifies it as being from the northern Kerr clan.
A glass jar with a large toadstool inside with a few smaller mushrooms around it. The jar is filled with some sort of viscous substance, completely submerging the mushrooms. A note glued to the glass claims that the contents to be the beginnings of Myconid birth, but assures viewers the sprout is "inert".
An unsent letter from a parent to their child congratulating them for their job as chef and finally revealing the secret family recipe to the kid.
A leather wallet stamped with the image of a merchant’s ship. It contains a high-quality forgery of a tax-exempt import / export license on goods produced by Random Artisan’s Tools. According to the paperwork, the bearer, up to three of his retinue and up to one ship or wagon can pass through any border, bridge, gate or city without paying any toll, tax or fee of passage or a tax on the goods so long as they were produced by those tools. The licence expires 5d10 months from the time it is originally found.

—Note: The previous 10 items are repeated for easier rolling on a d100.

An old rose made from ash, carved with the Elven script for "Good".
A scorched brass horseshoe that was thrown from the hoof of a Nightmare, a type of fiendish equine named after the terrible dreams suffered by those that encountered them. The wicked creatures are best known for serving as mounts under a variety of malevolent beings throughout the Lower Planes.
A wheel of aged dwarven cheese, clad in beeswax.
A hand mirror made of silver, with ornaments of beautiful and long-haired androgyne faces covering the frame.
A one-gallon cask of Untergraad, a liquor made popular by students and modeled after the medical or scientific alcohol commonly pilfered from laboratories. It's often flavored with herbs and its alcohol content is both very high and incredibly constant. Drinks are usually poured to the proportionate weight of the imbiber. A skilled bartender can push an Untergraad drinker to the very edge of riotously drunk with a measured dose.
A rather drab-looking painted portrait set in a brightly shining metallic locket.
A crude effigy and shamanic heirloom from one of the hagtrees that grow deep in the forest.
A physical shard of blackest night said to be a prison for the partial essence of the Trickster himself. Any close to it may be undone by its troubling aura.
A scroll describing a dread spell that fills the foes' minds with their own worst nightmares.
A clear crystal broach of purest clarity whose core dances with whirling white specks like that of the fiercest blizzard.
An abhorrent lodestone from which a gnawing sense of wrongness emanates.
A military uniform, in white and sky-blue color, with a unicorn emblem.
An elegant dress with rich black silk back and sides and a deep purple velvet insert in the front creating a striking combination of fabrics. The solid half-sleeves have a beautiful floral pattern, tree-cornered lace that falls into a point of silver-thread piping.
A simple bamboo mouth-harp.
A leather wallet stamped with the symbol of a mortar and pestle. It contains a full set of certified identification papers denoting that the bearer is a member of the healer’s guild. The section containing the member's physical description (Height, weight, sex, race, eye, skin and hair color) is completely blank and could be filled in by anyone with half decent handwriting.
A hair clip made from a mermaid’s scales along with a piece of coral.
A wooden doll depicting a man, possibly from a Stone Age culture, carved with a spear in his hand, his waist adorned with braided sinew as a belt of sorts.
A silver flask midway full of a strong and harsh brew of ale.
A mesmerizing crystal that pulsates with an otherworldly energy, resonating with alien life force, casting haunting reflections within its crystalline structure.
A wrought iron bottle filled with a plant based supernatural libation known a Zozo Juice. It is a fiery red drink with thick orange bubbles that almost makes it appear molten in nature. Although it is technically an ale, its more like coagulated blood considering how thick it is. Bubbles crawl slowly to the surface through its sanguine blood-like depths. It is an extremely spicy drink that makes it almost unbearable to consume.
A pickled kobold fetus in a jar that occasionally twitches when the light gets too bright.
A crude set of glass wind chimes that faintly hums in starlight.
A dwarven hunk of flint carved with a short prophecy.
A clockwork sphere with iron wings. At center is nut-sized storage hole.
A collection of fourteen perfectly spherical steel balls. When held in close proximity to each other, they snap together into a cube by themselves. If one ball is removed from the cube, they collapse back into a pile.
A carpet that depicts a map of the heavens, showing many different, colorful constellations and whirling planets, woven in thick, richly dyed wool.
A tall, thin sculpture of a sort of squashed-in horse, carved out of translucent stone.
A rowan wand, charged with the first circle of seven marks for binding.
A big copper key that looks like it has been lying around turning green for a couple hundred years. It is six inches long may be the heaviest key ever hefted. It is squared off flat on the sides and Investigative PC's can discover an inscription under the verdigris that when scrapped at reads; “Random Motto”.
A silver bracelet with dozens of small charms hanging from it. The charms represent various symbols of luck and fortune from different religions, cultures, and traditions.
A hat made of soft felt and adorned with small branches, flowers and butterflies that change color with the seasons. It was crafted by a fey artisan as a gift for a mortal friend.
A wooden crate full of human hands of all shapes, sizes and colors and all of them are remarkably preserved and in near perfect condition. Some of them have perforations where the cut is.
A thin sheet of ironoak on which is sketched a charcoal drawing of a child wearing fabulous clothes and draped with jewels. Dangling from one corner, a handful of tiny iron charms dangling from copper chains, three missing.
A brilliant blue mug beset with scores of tiny gems in a fractal depiction of riches raining from a pearl moon. The surface of the glazed and fired clay is polished to a mirror sheen.
A marble statuette featuring a sea eagle rising from the waves, its eyes inlaid with bronze flames, its talons blood stained.
A willow-woven tablet secures a bas relief of kingdom soldiers huddled around a dirt map, conversing and holding their weapons. In flickering light, it hums softly, like a distant conversation barely heard.
A frivolously thin linen jacket sewn with iron studs in the shape of saffron stems, slightly rusty. It smells strongly of the depicted herb. While worn, the wearer finds themselves extremely clear minded, regardless of their physical condition or alchemical impairment; this clarity does not extend to control over their body’s functions.
An ash-gray shawl whose fringes wave and flicker like living fire, warm to the touch.
A rich green linen tunic embroidered with a massive golden peppermint, the flowers made of threaded silver. It fills the air with the same smell, always fresh.
A thin chain made of alternating links of gold and silver and features a bloody daffodil wrought from rose gold.
A bronze brooch engraved with a pair of sandals, their straps broken and trailing. They hum excitedly when not in motion.
A thickly padded shirt featuring a stylized blackberry bramble; the berries at the hems are sewn with tarnished silver thread.
A feastbowl carved from a single piece of marble, edged in faces which on inspection always seem to be people the viewer knows and cares for.
A silk ribbon stitched with gold and silver thread in stanzas of a poem about dying wealthy.
The Winter Aristocrat’s Dinner: A framed painting of a thin, beautiful, long-haired person eating a luxurious feast alone at a table in the snow that is, at first glance, a wonder. Closer inspection shows shadowy figures shivering at the edges in the dark, left out. Whatever figures were once painted there are covered now by a soft, porous mold that peels away easily but seems endless.
An azure-lacquered tablet that has a moon-bent tree made from polished ironoak laid into its face, the roots of which entangle each other and protrude from the tablet to end in small spikes.
A deep purple linen shirt sewn with extraordinarily thin iron wire in the shape of a cloud-shrouded moon over the right breast. Between the wires grows a pale green mold, clinging to the shirt in flaky outgrowths. The wearer can always see the moon’s outline, no matter what it is hidden behind. In moonlight, the mold grows noticeably.
A tin brooch shaped like a lightning-struck tree, with a dozen forks of lightning made from carefully inlaid porcelain, some of them broken.
A small porcelain thimble chased in scarlet and has a crimson silk slip cover. The markings on the thimble itself are minute and depict a cheerful but strained proprietor hawking various wares from a cart.
A handtruck featuring a thick bronze pry at the base of a long ironoak handle with two stubby wheels. Tiny iron charms in the shape of hearts dangle from the spokes of each wheel.
An archaic keepsake box with trinkets from a commoner from a forgotten era. Although these items may have some cultural significance, the items contained in the box are generally commonplace for that era. It does signal that other potentially more valuable artifacts from this era may be in the vicinity.
A beautifully crafted urn that, if broken, releases a vengeful spirit
A writ of freedom for years of indentured servitude paid off.
A tear stained map of the local cemetery with an “X” marking a specific grave.
A letter from family thanking the recipient for the money they've been sending, but ma isn't getting better so they should come home to see her soon.
A child's toy and a note in childish writing "so u arnt lonly" with it.
A polished black lacquer music box, with a picture of a migratory duck on the lid and an inscription inside that reads, "Home is Wherever I'm With You." The mechanism plays a nasty dissonant tune.
A seemingly unremarkable stone that emits a soothing, melodious hum when rubbed, but only those with a pure heart can hear the hidden harmonies that convey ancient wisdom.
A letter with the following written inside "we only need 300 more gold until we can bring her back and live peacefully once again as a family".
A veil with delicate, hand-painted patterns that shift and transform over time, subtly mirroring the emotions and experiences of the wearer, revealing a narrative of their life's journey.
A long thick staff-like musical instrument made of multiple joined rattlesnake rattlers that functions like a rain stick.
A bottle of cheap rotgut booze, only a quarter of it remains.
A wooden hand with articulating fingers. You can't tell if it's a mannequin hand to be used by artist, or a prosthetic. Every time you look away, it seems like the fingers slightly change position.
An antique hookah that looks recently used.
An armband made from vampirized human flesh, bone, and small hematite stones.
A pewter belt buckle with a symbol of a grinning face.
A nearly translucent roll of old parchment.
A large, intricately carved stone bowl filled with a thick, red liquid that smells like copper and rotten meat. The bowl is etched with strange, serpentine symbols and is supported by a trio of coiled serpent legs.
A simple and unassuming clay and bamboo, free-reed aerophone resembling a cross between an ocarina, a harmonica, and a pipe organ. The khaen covers four octaves, in a diatonic scale.
A whistle shaped like a wooden bird.
A velvet pouch filled with brilliant blue sand.
A turtle shell bowl polished to a beautiful shine.
A talisman displaying the symbol of a prominent noble house.
A collection of sandstone tablets filled with strange symbols. If translated, the tablets discuss the coming of a great serpent god. A thousand and one souls must be sacrificed in the name of the great serpent in order for it to manifest in the material plane.
A fishing hook made from ivory and studded with red beads.
A bound cluster of porcupine needles in a bag.
A silver fork with a crescent moon engraved onto the handle.
A single stone and wire earring that hums a faint, relaxing tune.
A clay urn the size of a fist that is covered in undecipherable writing.
A small copper frog statuette.
A small holy symbol of an exotic xenian cult dedicated to Random Domain.
A small flute carved from unfamiliar wood, giving it an unusual sound when played.
An occult mask that covers both the face and the head. It consists of a crown made to look like gold, but fake, and a veil made of heavy leather with holes for the eyes.
A mask of white porcelain with high, dramatic cheekbones and striking, red painted brows.
An acorn-sized seed with a green and orange swirled pattern. Knowledgeable PC’s can determine that it originated from the Feywild but aren’t sure what it will grow into.
A rod of whittled-down, bloody dragonhorn that has been scrimshawed with blasphemous prayers to the Archfiend of Random Evil Domain.
A bundle of unopened correspondence of a prominent politician.
A burnished copper coin that bears the crest of a forgotten kingdom.
A one-gallon cask labelled “Skullbungle”, bearing the design of an exploding grinning skull on the top lid. This jet-black drink swirls with red highlights and is made by distilling strong dwarven spirits through a mash made of hallucinogenic mushrooms and powerful chillies. Staggeringly strong and harsh yet incredibly tasty. Imbibing the drink often produces soothing hallucinations, making this a popular drink among the downtrodden as well.
A leather wallet stamped with the symbol of a wagon wheel. It contains a full set of certified identification papers denoting that the bearer is a member of the wagon-makers and wheelwrights guild. The section containing the member's physical description (Height, weight, sex, race, eye, skin and hair colour) is completely blank and could be filled in by anyone with half decent handwriting.

Anime North 2023 - Haul
Total cost: $335 (all prices are in CAD)
Figures:
Total cost: $185 + 150
Tumblr media
Love Live! Sunshine!! - Mari Ohara - Super Premium Figure - The First of Aquors (SPM) - $30
Tumblr media
I think that she's so cute! I was having a difficult time deciding between a few Mari prize figures, but I definitely like this one a lot. :)
Fate stay/night - Saber - Nendoroid (#250) 10th Anniversary Edition (Good Smile) - $60
Tumblr media
I bought her at the Nominoichi! I've never owned a full-size Nendoroid so I'm really happy to own her, especially at this price. :) She hasn't been unboxed in over 10 years... The seller was originally selling her for $70, but I was really happy to see the price drop near the end of the night, and that's what ended up cementing my decision. I love Saber so much and I'm really happy about this one. :D
Hatsune Miku - BiCute Bunnies - ~White Bunny Baby Pink~ (FuRyu) - $50
Tumblr media
She's so cute.... and also now the largest figure I own. The stockings are made of real material (which is a cool touch), but the fabric pills a lot in the back. I don't think the stockings were executed well at all. Regardless, I think she's adorable and I absolutely love her. >_<
Hatsune Miku - Noodle Stopper Figure - Sporty Maid Ver. (FuRyu) - $45
Tumblr media
I absolutely love the noodle stopper figures that have released recently. I love maid outfits, so I'm so overjoyed to have this one. >_< She's so cute.... it makes me want to buy cup noodles on purpose so I can take a picture of her with it. For now, she sits quite nicely on the edge of a shelf. I think I actually prefer this style a lot over figures with stands.
Manga:
Total cost: $20
Tumblr media
From top to bottom:
Persona 3 - volumes 8 and 9
Persona 4 - volumes 7 - 10
Steins;Gate 0 - volumes 2 and 3
The Beguiling's stand at Anime North has select volumes of manga for 4/$10 every year, and I always look forward to it! I already own volumes 1-6 of both the Persona 3 and Persona 4 manga from their stand in 2019 (the last time that I attended the convention), so I'm up to 10 on P4 and I'm missing 7 on the P3 one! I don't own volume one of the Steins;Gate 0 manga, so I'll end up pirating it online. Overall, I'm always really happy to get them so cheap, especially since most of the manga I've accumulated over the years is actually from them at this price.
Artist Goods:
Separate page for full artist links is located here: ♡
Total cost: $120
Tumblr media
From left to right:
NIJISANJI - Millie Parfait - acrylic charm (moecinna) - $15
NIJISANJI - Yugo Asuma + Millie Parfait - acrylic charms (NIKOORIN) - $25
I love these charms a lot! I was so excited to see one for Yugo. :O There were a lot of artists selling Nijisanji merch, but OP was the only one with him. >_< I have moecinna's charm on my keys and NIKOORIN's charms attached to the backpack that I take to work! They're all so cute! I put moecinna's charm on the lanyard with my badge, and I got some compliments on it while waiting in line for a panel, too. :)
Tumblr media
Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! - Nightcord at 25:00 - print (Nemururin) - $20
Her art was so pretty! I really wanted the Luxiem print, but it was sold out by the time I decided on the purchase. :( Spent my last $20 here! I was debating on whether or not I'd get her Wonderland x Showtime print or her Nightcord at 25:00 print, and Nightcord won out. If I ever see the Luxiem print up for sale again... 👀
Tumblr media
Ichigo Magazine Tee - shirt (Ocean In Space) - $50
I absolutely love her art! I saw a post online a week before the event saying that she'd be there and I was so excited, except I couldn't find her in the artist alley. It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize that her booth was in the dealer's room. >_< The shirt itself is really comfy, and the fact that it's mostly polyester is a godsend to me! (I have a lot of texture issues with cotton and don't wear it unless I'm leaving the house.) I normally wear a medium, so I bought that, and it definitely does come really oversized! I think that makes it even more comfortable, honestly. It was an intense debate on which shirt to buy, but I'm really happy with this one and I think it's so cute. ^^
Tumblr media
Sanrio - Cinnamoroll - phone grip (uukipi) - $10
(Phone case not included, LMAO.) A ton of artists were selling phone grips this year, which was super cool! I've never used a popsocket-type phone grip, but it's actually pretty nice. :O All of the phone grips from uukipi were super cute, too, which makes me really happy. :)
Miscellaneous:
Total cost: $30
Tumblr media
Love Live! μ’s x SNOW MIKU 2016 (Bellplans) - clear file - $3
I wasn't aware that this collab even existed! I really like Love Live! and I really like Vocaloid, this is like a collab made in heaven. The file's still in it's original packaging (which I haven't removed), so it was a bit difficult to get a good picture of it! I'm surprised that I got it so cheap at the Nominoichi, but I'm really glad that I did. :)
Tumblr media
From top to bottom/left to right:
Code:Realize - Cardia Beckford - rubber strap - $2
Diabolik Lovers: More,Blood - Ayato Sakamaki - deka keyholder
Love Live! Sunshine!! - Yoshiko Tsushima - acrylic keychain
Love Live! Sunshine!! - Kanan Matsuura - acrylic keychain - all keychains for $5
I can't even explain how much joy I had when I found Code:Realize merch! :O I love the keychains so much, too... The girl running the table was really nice, and a lot of things were discounted right before the end of the Nominoichi, and the keychains on the bottom were 3/$5!
Tumblr media
From left to right:
Pokémon Scarlet/Violet - lanyard - given to me by @form-sweet-form! Thank you so much!
Café Delish 2023 - Zelda heart pin, rubber bracelet, maid café ticket - $20 (for admission to the maid café)
This year, I attended the con with someone that I'd met in a DMMd server! She was super nice and it was so fun hanging out with her. :D Her cosplay of Aoba Seragaki was so good, too... She gave me this lanyard when we met up with each other! I had to wait in line for an hour and a half to get tickets for Café Delish for the both of us... it was so worth it though, it was so fun! ^^ I should've shown up even earlier, we couldn't get tickets at the same table by the time I made it... As souvenirs, I have a pin, a rubber bracelet, and a Polaroid with the maid at my table (which I will not be posting on Tumblr, as I'm not exactly eager to post my face here). I definitely wish to buy tickets for Café Delish again, and I hope to see her in the future as well!
Tumblr media
Bandori! - 8th live - mini file map
Everything here and below were free goods given at the Nominoichi for whoever wanted them!
From the same Nominoichi seller that sold me the keychains: a whole bunch of goods given for free (originally $2 each) at the end of the night! I took a lot of them, so I ended up handing her some money (separate from the keychains LMAO) as thanks. I didn't realize until I'd gotten home that I accidentally took two of one of the envelopes. >_< If anyone happens to want the spare, I don't mind mailing it as long as you can pay shipping. Interestingly enough, the back of them has the 7-Eleven logo? These envelopes are made of plastic (clear file material) and super cute. :)
Tumblr media
From left to right/top to bottom:
Tsukipro - Yaegashi Kensuke - Alive & Growth fan club card collection
Uma Musume Pretty Derby - Mejiro McQueen - tin
Senran Kagura - Yumi - acrylic keychain ver. A
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai - Kobato Hasegawa - mirror
Ocean in Space - sticker
Pins:
Fire Emblem Awakening - Tharja, Gaius, Henry, Chrom
Fire Emblem Fates - Xander
Dream Daddy - Damien Bloodmarch
DRAMAtical Murder - Clear, Virus, Trip
(Pin artist - unknown. If anyone can find out who drew any of these, please let me know!)
Everything from the top (except the sticker, that one came free with the shirt purchase) is from the keychain seller! All of the pins are from another seller that had a box of pins they were giving away for free. I actually don't know much about the shows and games that they're from... I think that I want to look into Tsukipro especially! I do think that all of the goods are super cute, though. :) I was especially surprised when I peeled off the backing of the Kobato metal and found out that it was a mirror, I didn't expect that at all. :O They had other DRAMAtical Murder pins, too! I gave the Aoba and Koujaku to Raphaela (from form-sweet-form), since those were the only ones that she wanted. :) The other DMMd pins are over here, in her Anime North post! Especially happy about the Clear, Virus, Henry, and Damien pins, since I love those characters especially. :)
Tumblr media
From left to right:
Akuyaku Reijou wa Ringoku no Outaishi ni Dekiai Sareru - postcard
5-Toubun no Hanayome ∬ - postcard
(I have no idea what the third one is from. If anyone knows, please let me know!)
Postcards! I think that they're super cute, so I picked these up from the keychain seller as well. I've never heard of any of the medias that they're from, though. The maid one is especially adorable.... I'm such a huge fan...
Overall, I had so much fun attending Anime North, and I'm really happy about the merchandise that I picked up from the convention! I've never had the money to own larger figures (over the many cons I've been to, I have two prize figures, one of which was a gift), so I'm so happy that I can actually collect them now! There are so many Miku figures that I want... Going to a convention as an adult with a job is such a freeing experience. I hope to go again next year, check out more panels, buy a lot, and hopefully go with a friend or two again!

Tumblr media
I spent a big chunk of August traveling. I went to Worldcon for the first time. It was in Glasgow, Scotland. My thought was if I didn't like the con, then I could just leave and do something touristy. I did end up enjoying the con and I plan to go when it's in Seattle next year. My hotel was about a 20 min to the convention center but it was pretty nice and along the river.
Tumblr media
If you don't know, Worldcon is a sci-fi fantasy con where the Hugos are held. It's in a different city every year. While there is some fan stuff, it is mainly aimed at pros and aspiring pros. As such the vibe was very different at Worldcon that the many comic shows I've been to. I think a lot of the panels at comic cons are basically press releases. There are some panels on craft, but they usually get buried/given bad time slots. Which makes sense because those comic shows are more focused on fans and sales.
So it was nice to listen to some topics with writing being the focus. I particularly liked one I went to about governments in sci-fi and fantasy and why those two genres tend toward writing about fascism or monarchy. I went because in The City Between, Connor's husband Jordan is their worlds equivalent of the governor. I think I got some good notes and ideas on how to flesh that angle out more in future stories.
Tumblr media
Also at Worldcon I grabbed some new books. One I ready finished, To Shape a Dragon's Breath. It is about a native girl who finds a dragon. Her people used to have dragons but were wiped out when white settlers started colonizing the area. Said white colonizers also have a lot of laws about dragons, so she has to go to one of their schools for dragon riders. It was very well written and I got through it pretty fast. My one complaint is at the beginning the main character is a bit too nice for my tastes. That isn't a flaw with the book, just my personal taste. I frequently like characters that are trash monsters to the point where my friends tell me they can't watch someone of my favorite shows because everyone is too awful. So me thinking a character is too nice, is probably a plus for everyone else.
After Worldcon, I stayed in Glasgow an extra day to explore. I was traveling with my pal Bones Leopard who wanted to visit the Glasgow Necropolis. I took a lot of graves I thought had cool designs.
Tumblr media
Right next to it is Glasgows Cathedral. So we also popped in and I took a bunch of pictures of that.
Tumblr media
Afterward, Bones feet started to hurt, so I ended up wandering around on my own and talking pictures of architecture I thought was neat. And while exploring I came across a group of bagpipers performing.
Tumblr media
After that I went to Edinburgh for a few days. Mostly I walked around and saw some performances. The Fridge Fest was going on while I was there. So I got to see a few fun street performances. On day was pretty rainy in the afternoon so I spelt it in the National Museum of Scotland. But the big thing I did in Edinburgh was I climbed Arthur's Seat. The view was amazing!
Tumblr media
I put all my Scotland pictures in my google drive. Anyone who wants to see them can browse here. The folder includes:
a bunch of buildings I thought looked neat in Glasgow and Edinburgh
walking along the river
all the graves I took pics of
a religion museum next to the graveyard and cathedral
inside the cathedral
the oldest house in Glasgow (each floor showed it in a different time period)
some landscapes/hills taken from inside the train to Edinburgh
climbing Arthur's Seat
photos from the National Museum of Scotland
The whole trip was fun. I also got to hang out with Kate Ashwin in person. Iron Circus wants to do a boxset of Cautionary Fables, so we sat down and figured out what we want the box to look like.  Now that I'm home I'm gonna rest up and focus on The City Between. I have like 4 pages left of Shards of Reflection to finish up. So I need to make sure the next story, Glass Diamonds, is ready to go fairly soon. One that is done I need to rearrange my patreon a bit.
Tumblr media
Obviously, I haven't had time to get back to You are the Chosen One in over a year. But Patreon removed goals from Patreon over a year ago. When I started You are the Chosen One, I was using goals as a milestone to justify when either You are the Chosen One or The City Between could have another update day. The goal is removed and I wouldn't have time to do that even if my patreon did reach it. So I need to reassess what I'm doing. I will probably start posting it publicly, however I don't know if I want to rotate it's chapters with The City Between with updates on Wednesdays, or just post it whenever.  Also, Patreon removing goals was a more minor example it continuiously making unhelpful changes. The newest of which is them forcing everyone to switch to a different payment model. Basically, until this month, I charged all my Patreon backers on the 1st. That is how subsciptions used to work on all patreons. But they thought that was a problem because sometimes someone would sign up the 25th of a month and then be charged twice in a short amount of time. For the past year, Patreon has been pushing creators to switch to everyone gets charged on whatever day they signed up on a monthly basis. While pushing everyone to make this change, they also made an app, one that barely works. Because they made an app, now anyone who pays via the app is giving Apple 30% of what they pay. This sucks but it is thing that has been known and talked about in the tech community for years. Like before Comixology died, it wouldn't let you buy things in it's Apple app BECAUSE of this 30% fee. So Patreon has made some news posts complaining that Apple is doing this. But the sneaky part is they are using Apple enforcing it's shitty TOS as an excuse to force creators to switch to new subscription model. The new model is worse for me because well it's nice to get a big chunk of money all at once each month, rather than have it trickle in day.
Tumblr media
Anyway, this was fuuuuun news to come back to when I was very jet-lagged. There is a new patreon-like service called Comradery. It definately looks appealing. So I'll probably look into mirroring my patreon content on there. But that will probably be something I sit down and figure out in like December rather than right now. For now I gotta focus on keeping The City Between running.
That's all for this month. Thanks everyone for you support as always!

Week 1 Artist Research
Christo and Jeanne-Claude: The Gates (2005)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Background:
Large-scale environmental sculptures by renowned artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude are commended for transforming public spaces into immersive creative experiences. One of their best-known works, The Gates, was finished in Central Park, New York City, in February 2005. The artists' vast effort, which took them over 26 years to finish, is evidence of their dedication and perseverance with their goal. The installation was eventually finished, despite a number of logistical, administrative, and financial challenges; this is a testament to their tenacity and creative energy.
Details:
Location: New York City's Central Park
Time: February 12–February 27, 2005.
Materials: 7,503 steel-framed gates covered in fabric dyed saffron. Every gate was 16 feet tall and ranged in width from 5 feet 6 inches to 18 feet.
Cost: Approximately $21 million, all covered by the revenues from the sales of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's models, preparatory sketches, and other artwork.
Installation:
As part of the 23 km of trails in Central Park, 7,503 gates were installed as part of The Gates project. Each gate was fashioned from a flowing panel of saffron-colored linen. It was supported by two vertical steel supports and hung from a horizontal crossbar. The gates provide a dynamic and captivating visual spectacle as they gently move in the breeze. The bright saffron cloth, in sharp contrast to the wintry surroundings of Central Park, produced an aesthetically pleasing promenade that was warm and welcoming for guests.
The artists employed a team of hundreds of people to erect the gates in order to minimize any impact on the park's environment. Every gate was assembled on site and placed to follow the park's path patterns throughout the meticulous installation process. After the project was completed, all of the materials used to build the gates were meant to be repurposed.
Reflection:
The Gates altered Central Park and encouraged visitors to view the well-known landscape from a different angle. The vivid saffron cloth, in stark contrast to the chilly surroundings, brought warmth and color to the park. The proposal featured people as an essential part of the artwork by enticing them to enter the gates.
One of the most significant aspects of the Gates was its capacity to bring people together. Visitors from all around the world felt a sense of unity and shared experience as a result of the exhibit. The project was a unique occasion that emphasized the beauty of a fleeting experience because it was only temporary.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude provided the Gates with autonomous funding, which preserved their creative independence. They may continue to create art according to their vision without interference from the government or benefactors.
To sum up, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's amazing work of public art, The Gates, transformed Central Park and provided an unforgettable experience for those who witnessed it. It illustrated how art has the power to bring people together and alter their perception of their environment.

Richard Serra: Tilted Arc (1981)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Background:
Renowned American sculptor Richard Serra is well-known for his massive steel structures. One of his best-known sculptures, Tilted Arc, was installed in 1981 at Federal Plaza in New York City. The artwork sparked a contentious conversation regarding public art and how it affects public areas.
Details:
Location: Federal Plaza in New York City. Duration: installed in 1981, removed in 1989. Materials: Corten steel. Dimensions: 120 feet long by 12 ft high. Cost: Funded by the Art-in-Architecture Program of the United States General Services Administration.
Installation:
The huge Tilted Arc steel wall bent to split Federal Plaza in half. The rust color of the steel stood out sharply against the background. The artwork was intended to interact with the plaza and alter its experience because it was designed to be site-specific.
Reflection:
Tilted Arc significantly altered Federal Plaza's user experience. Its imposing presence disrupted some, but forcing them to maneuver around it provoked thought in others. The sculpture was meant to make individuals more conscious of their surroundings and their movements within them.
Still, the piece generated a lot of controversy. Many in the workforce in the region felt that it was an eyesore and a barrier, which led to public hearings and discussions. The fact that Tilted Arc was eventually demolished in 1989 due to a court order highlights the complex relationship that exists between public art and its audience.
In summary, Richard Serra's Tilted Arc was a powerful piece of public art that challenged preconceptions and sparked important discussions on the role and importance of art in public spaces. Even after it was removed, it is still recognized as a significant work of contemporary art history.
