“Spiegelman has turned the exuberant fantasy of comics inside out by giving us the most incredible fantasy in comics’ history: something that actually occurred…. The central relationship is not that of cat and mouse, but that of Art and Vladek. Maus is terrifying not for its brutality, but for its tenderness and guilt.” —The New Yorker

Book 448
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Illustrated by Gustave Doré
Pantheon Books 1944
Munchausen’s adventures and tall tales were first written anonymously by writer and con artist, Rudolf Erich Raspe (1736-1794), as pieces in German humor magazines in 1781 and 1783. Based on a real person, Hieronymus Karl Friedrich von Münchhausen, the character was not specifically named, probably out of fear of a lawsuit. In 1785 the character was properly identified with the publication in English of Raspe’s (still writing anonymously) Baron Munchausen’s Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia. From there, the publication history and authorship of Baron Munchausen goes a little off the rails. But it makes for quite entertaining reading, worthy of the Baron himself. This book, published in 1944, includes 160 illustrations by Gustave Doré, but offers nothing else beyond the text to identify which version has actually been printed. But with its multiple authors, convoluted history, and various editions and translations, there’s something incredibly appropriate about that.

THE DAUGHTER SHIP by Boo Trundle is out TODAY!
Tumblr media
“Trundle’s book is as cheekily humorous as it is deadly serious, a chaotic performance art piece wearing a novel as a disguise. A wildly strange reading experience that disorients and exhilarates in equal measure.” —Kirkus
Katherine, an attentive mother to her teenagers, comfortably married to her strapping provider of a husband, longs to overcome her dark thoughts and intermittent fears of sexual intimacy.
This brisk, mesmerizing version of her life is told in alternating short chapters by Truitt, Star, and Smooshed Bug—her inner children, each with their particular strategy for coping with Katherine’s past at the hands of a hopeless mother and a terrifying, seductive father. Several of her female ancestors, Confederate widows and their daughters, who’ve imposed a legacy of racism and damage on her bloodline, also join the telling.
The assembled ghosts and contenders for Katherine’s ear are gathered in a rusting WWII submarine off the coast of Virginia Beach where the truth of her life is, quite literally, submerged. Will they surface with it? Will they protect her from it, or deliver it to her?
This unforgettable chorus of charming selves, battling over Katherine’s well-being, is unified by their hope for her future, as they collaborate to shape a personal narrative like no other we’ve experienced in fiction.
Check out The Daughter Ship by Boo Trundle, out today!

Out this week: Boys Weekend (Pantheon Books, $28):
The Nib‘s Mattie Lubchansky wrote and drew this “trans final girl story about a bachelor party gone very, very wrong,” as a trans woman must not only deal with being asked to be the “best man” at a friend’s wedding, but also a bloodthirsy cult that’s staying in the same hotel as the groom’s party.
See what else is arriving at your local comic shop this week.

Book 140
The Artificial Kingdom: A Treasury of the Kitsch Experience
Celeste Olalquiaga
Pantheon Books 1998
Filled with hundreds of historical illustrations, this book is a deeply thoughtful examination of kitsch, its history and meanings. Is kitsch merely “bad taste,” or is it a much deeper experience with its own history and relevance? Thoroughly fascinating.

The sunshine court’s characterisation of Jeremy Knox is fucking sublime btw
• guy who is very chill and friendly not bc of temperament but because he has decided to be chill and friendly and is clinging onto that with his fucking teeth >>>>>>>>>>>>
• the gentle… not quite manipulation, but like conflict resolution and team management?
Jean hangs up on him and he calls back immediately and a) doesnt accuse or chide b) pretends it was his mistake to gently shift the tone and c) maintains focus on his goal. This is like, insane people skills and I wish we got more of it in the latter part. I would KILL to see him dealing with the team in depth
• this man hates 1: cops 2: congressmen (specifically those who are fucking his mum) 3: every fucker who ever said a bad word to jean Moreau and for that we have to give props
• sooooo many plot hooks for this guy. like he has a History and i for one am waiting eagerly to hear it
• canonically gay and horny. we have no choice but to stan.
• has a butler?!?!?!?
Just overall such a good character that managed to walk the line of pleasant surprise but also fulfilling fan hopes based on precious little canon information
