Rei is significantly more relaxed over the years, but the saying "once a hitman, always a hitman" rings true for him.

And Kazuki.

There were instances where they got robbed, or there were attempts made anyway, where Rei's sole working arm was preoccupied, or he found himself in an otherwise vulnerable position.

And yet, no harm had ever come to him, and that was not because of Rei's doing at all.

It was Kazuki.

That man had stored more weapons in the crevices of the diner than Rei had back at their old place, which was an incredible feat to surpass. All weapons were well out of reach and knowledge of Miri (unbeknownst to them, Miri knows all the hiding places) and if Rei were ever in a position to be distracted or incapable of disarming an intruder, he could always count on Kazuki.

The first time happened when Rei was carrying a heavy box and carefully positioning it on his shoulder to heave it on a high shelf. He had heard the intruder, his senses still sharp as ever, but had no time to grab any of the weapons from the kitchen.

But Rei knew, he didn't need to.

The second the intruder whipped out what Rei assumed was a pistol, the same second a gut twisting scream tore from the man's throat and a loud thud followed it.

The would-be robber was sweating (and probably soiling) himself. Kazuki Kurusu stood with one arm filled with groceries and the other holding a loaded gun aimed at the guy's head, a menacing, almost sadistic smile twisting his usually kind features.

Rei smirked and finished heaving up the box on the shelf, very much unbothered by the sight before him. "Ah, did you forget to buy the lemons, again?"

Kazuki's sadistic killer smile vanished and he glanced at Rei with a twitch in his eye. "Did I forget- I'll have you know, Miri wrote down everything we needed! So no, I didn't forget to buy the lemons."

Rei rested his hand on his hip. "Outside?"

Kazuki nodded, gun never once leaving its position aimed at the intruder's head. "Yep, but she can barely wait for dinner so lets wrap this up qui-"

The intruder thought Kazuki was sufficiently distracted to attempt to tackle Rei and at least flee the scene, but as soon as he moved, Kazuki and Rei moved as well.

Rei swiped his feet out and tripped the guy, while Kazuki brutally slammed his foot on top of the guy's head. An audible thud rang through the air when the man's skull made contact with the floor, the cold steel of the gun pressed into his head. "Oi, it's rude to interrupt people while they're talking, dickhead."

Rei was already calling the police, silently lamenting the fact that they couldn't bury him in their backyard. Perhaps his plants would grow faster too that way.

Oh well.

"You didn't buy the lemons." Rei stared blankly at Kazuki while the police escorted the beat up robber outside.

Kazuki's eye twitched again. "MIRI!"

Miri huffed. "I swear I wrote it down, Kazu Papa!"

Daughter Daddies - 10-Year Time Skip - Sub vs Dub Comparison

I’m going to make a proper post for both Episodes 11 and 12, but I wanted to make a short, separate post for the Daughter Daddies segment of Buddy Daddies in Episode12. Having watched this scene in both sub and dub, I’m thinking the disconnect that some people are getting from the character interactions here are from a combination of two things:

1. The one degree of separation that comes about from listening to one language but reading the interaction in another. We know which characters are saying what words and we can see the way the characters are emoting and interacting with each other, but there is still a disconnect with the language being spoken and the translation being read.

2. The sub translations for Buddy Daddies have been extremely good. But having watched the series both subbed and dubbed, I feel that the dub translation comes out a bit more on top. I think that comes from the fact that there is a little more freedom and wiggle room to work with and dub translations tend to fit spoken language better/more, while sub translations tend to lean more into written language and direct translations a bit more. In most cases, these differences don’t really matter, but with this 10 Year Time Skip scene in Buddy Daddies, I really do think it makes all the difference.

And I think that disconnect that some people feel from that time skip scene is due to the combination of these two factors. It resulted in the sub not really being able to capture the back-and-forth/play off of each other nature of Kazuki, Rei, and Miri in the scene that the English dub is able to properly capture. There is a flow there between the three characters that you can hear in the Japanese, but can’t quite see happening in the subtitles. 

I’ll try to show that aspect as clearly as I can in this comparison post, but I also highly suggest just giving the Daughter Daddies segment in Ep. 12 a watch in the English dub to really see (and hear) what I mean. 

Anyway, let’s dive in!

There really isn’t much difference in the scene where Miri is up in her room and Kazuki calls her down, so I’ll start with when Miri is down in the diner area with Kazuki and Rei.

Sub Miri: Papa Rei! Papa Kazu! Ta-dah! (Rei & Kazu: Oh!) Well?

Sub Rei: A high school student.

Sub Miri: Bingo!

Dub Miri: Papa Rei! Papa Kazuki! Ta-dah! (Rei: Nice!, Kazu: Hey!) How do I look?

Dub Rei: Like a high school student.

Dub Miri: Ding-ding-ding! (They had her say this with the Santa snow art scene too).

Thoughts: It’s small, but the addition of Kazuki and Rei actually say things like “Nice!” and “Hey!” (a “Hey” like in “Hey! Looking good!”) and having Miri ask specifically how she looks, instead of just “Well” and having that question be connected to Rei’s answer with “Like” instead of just “A high school student” helps with the flow and connectiveness of the scene.

Sub Kazu: I’m so glad you didn’t break bad! 

Sub Miri: What in the heck?

Dub Kazu: I’m so relieved that you never ended up breaking bad!

Dub Miri: Huh? Breaking bad...?

Thoughts: It’s small, but by having Miri repeat the “breaking bad” part as a question also helps with that flow I was talking about above and with it feeling like a more connected conversation.

Sub Kazu: When you’re a parent, there’s so much to worry about. The ten years I spent since opening this diner really paid off!

Dub Kazu: You don’t know what it’s like! Parents have so much to worry about! That’s why I decided to open this diner ten years ago, and devote my life to honest work for your sake.

Sub Rei: Honest work?

Sub Miri: Didn’t you slip out yesterday to go drinking with a girl again?

Sub Kazu: That doesn’t count!

Dub Rei: Really?

Dub Miri: I seem to recall someone cutting out early yesterday to go drinking with the ladies.

Dub Kazu: Sorry, what was that?

Thoughts: In the Japanese, Rei does parrot back, “Honest work?” like he does in the sub, but I feel that comes across a bit differently than it does in English. Here the “Really?” sounds a bit more teasing and being more general, and feels less accusatory in nature, more just disbelieving about Kazuki’s statement in general. 

Meanwhile, Miri’s English dub statement clarifies that the doubt that both Rei and Miri express in regards to “honest work” is very specifically about the fact that Kazuki left work early, not that he was drinking with a lady or ladies. Also, Miri saying “drinking with the ladies,” makes it clear that he was likely at a Fairy Lips like establishment and really just out for drinks with them. Not on a date with a lady in particular or anything like that.

The Fairy Lips establishment worked in a similar way as a hostess bar, just with a gambling aspect as well, so nothing sexual (as in sexual acts) are actually allowed (though, I have no doubt that they do sometimes happen at establishments like that). But the true appeal of those places are the illusions of sex and just female company in general. 

Sub Rei: Miri. Eat.

Dub Rei: Eat up, Miri. 

Thoughts: By having Rei say, “Eat up, Miri,” instead of just “Miri. Eat,” the feel comes off less like a command and more like a general statement that the food is ready for her to eat. There’s a softness to “Eat up, Miri.” Still a command in some ways, but gentler. I also think that in English, one word verbal commands always come off as could and harsh on some level, while in Japanese having a verb just existing on its own is way more common and therefore doesn’t hold the same sort of feel to it. Of course, since we know Rei as a character, we also know that Rei doesn’t mean anything harsh by “Miri. Eat,” but there is likely still a left over feeling of coldness or distance there.

The Rei and Miri exchange of her saying thanks for the food, him asking her how it is, and her saying it’s yummy as always is pretty much the same as the sub without any substantial changes or differences. Basically, nothing worth mentioning here.

Sub Kazu: I’m glad you got a signature dish with that toast, but shouldn’t you expand your repertoire a little?

Sub Rei: But why?

Sub Kazu: Ever the one-trick pony...

Sub Miri: Hey, it’s fine! Since Papa Rei’s the best!

Dub Kazu: Listen, I know the toast is your signature dish, and that’s great, but shouldn’t you expand your repertoire?

Dub Rei: What for?

Dub Kazu: You are such a one-trick pony.

Dub Miri: Hey! There’s nothing wrong with that. The important thing is that his one-trick pony is yummy!

Thoughts: The use of “listen,” and “that’s great” definitely makes Kazuki’s statement to Rei feel more like general constructive criticism, while Miri’s words in the dub come off more like a warm teasing (like this is possibly a conversation that they’ve had before, lol). Kazuki’s “You are such a one-trick pony” statement also comes off more as more as a warm, sentimental line sort of thing.

The sub translation comes off a bit colder. The way Kazuki’s first line is structured sounds more like just general criticism, as does the “ever” part in his one-trick pony line. Miri’s line as feels less connected, even though it is still on topic, so the comradery feel found in the dub is less present. Of course, tone also matters here and I think the dub really allows for the more teasing and warm tone of the scene to come across than the sub does since, as I mentioned, there is a bit of a disconnect with subs that isn’t as present with dubs.

Sub Kazu: It’s fine like this, right?

Sub Miri: It’s not! Come on, we’re family!

Sub Rei: Family?

Sub Kazu: Can’t be helped, right?

Sub Rei: Hey-!

Dub Kazu: Can’t we make it work like this?

Dub Miri: No way! C’mon, we’re family, aren’t we?

Dub Rei: Well, are we?

Dub Kazu: Get over here, you big lug!

Dub Rei: Hey-!

Thoughts: The dub translation makes things a bit clearer by adding more words and context. In the sub, Kazuki just questions, “It’s fine like this” but what is meant by “it”? The dub line makes the “it” easier to figure out. Adding “can’t we,” “make,” and “work” together with the it makes it clear that the “it” here is referring specifically to the photo arrangement that they had going on (Kazuki and Rei on either side of Miri).

Miri’s lines are largely the same, but by adding “aren’t we?” to the end of it, and then having Rei parrot that with a “well” in front of it, gives a feeling of Rei and Miri sort of coming together in solidarity on this, a little teasing on their end. And Kazuki just going all in on it, with the dub giving him a line that implies a lot of sentimentality on Kazuki’s part towards Rei. “Big lug” is a term of endearment, and implies someone (usually a man) with a strong physique, but a gentle personality, which does fit Rei. 

The Japanese does have Kazuki saying the Japanese equivalent of “can’t be helped,” but...A lot of Japanese translators view that translation of the phrase as being overused and not necessarily the best translation all the time based on situation and context. And this would be one situation and context where I think it doesn’t quite work. 

Kazuki is being put on the spot by both Rei and Miri, “we are a family, right,” him saying otherwise wouldn’t be right and they all know that, while Miri has made it clear that they can’t do their usual photo arrangement, they have to try something new. So, yes, in a sense there is “no helping” the situation. But by the way Kazuki latches onto Rei,bringing him into a one-armed hug, and the huge smile on his face, we know this isn’t a sort of ‘-sigh- can’t be helped!’ kind of situation that that phrase often implies in English.

The dub translation of choosing to translate that as “Get over here, you big lug!” easily implies that Kazuki has accepted this new arrangement for their photo and that they are, of course, a family. The dub has Kazuki use a slangy term of endearment, because that is within his personality. He uses slang and overfamiliar grammar and words, so he would say something like that.

I think the dub does a great job of capturing this new change in the Kurusu family! <3

The fact that Rei prevented Kazuki from meeting the boss is so personal to me. Like we know that Kazu is Overprotective when it comes to Rei and Miri and Rei is aware of the fact that he cannot let him witness how his own father treats him. Cold , unloving and like a machine. All the things that Kazuki doesn't like about Rei.

Yes the part of the problem is also that Kazuki will definitely attack if he sees it happening and also it puts him in danger but also the fact that Rei wants to hide that part and show him the that he can be changed. HE WILL NOT BE HIS FATHER BUT HE'LL BE A PAPA IN EVERY WAY HE WAS DENIED WITH ONE. HE WILL BE THE DEFINATION THAT MIRI TOLD HIM OF A PAPA.

Rei couldn’t sleep. Normally he had no problems with falling asleep, especially ever since he stopped sleeping in the bathtub and instead started sleeping in his actual bed. But tonight, he had a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach that just would not go away. Honestly, the more he focused on the strange feeling, the more he realized that it wasn’t localized to just his stomach. It was like something was swirling around deep in his lower abdomen, mixed with a weird tingling up his spine and down through his thighs, accompanied by a warmth radiating from his entire body. And because he was having such a hard time falling asleep, he was forced to think about why he had this strange feeling. Nothing specifically came to mind as to what was causing it, but he did know that he’s been getting this feeling a lot lately, and at such random times, too.

Like the other day, he noticed the feeling for just a brief moment. It was around lunchtime; he was cleaning up around the living room while Kazuki and Miri were in the kitchen prepping the ingredients for their meal. Miri laughed about something Kazuki had said, which caused Rei to glance up at them. It’s not like what he saw was anything spectacular. It was just Kazuki stirring a pot of soup. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbow, exposing his forearms. He had a stain of something (probably the soup) on his apron. He had a big goofy grin on his face and was laughing along with Miri. And when he noticed Rei looking at them, his eyes lit up as he called out, “Oh hey, food’s almost done. So go wash your hands and get your butt at the table!” See? Nothing spectacular. These were all things that Rei had seen and heard nearly every single day. But for some reason, his stomach fluttered and his face felt hot.

The feeling came again the night before last. Rei was sitting on the couch, playing Morio Kart with Miri, while Kazuki folded laundry. When he was done, Kazuki sat down next to Rei close enough so that their knees were touching. “Hey, how ‘bout you guys let me play for once?”

“Whaaa! Kazu papa wants to play, too?? Yaay!! I wanna play with Kazu papa!” Miri was ecstatic.

“But there’s only two controllers…” Rei said matter-of-factly.

“Then gimme yours!” Kazuki reached over, placing his left hand on Rei’s thigh to steady himself and grabbed the controller from Rei using his right hand. “Here, show me which buttons to use.” Kazuki held out the controller and leaned in closer to Rei.

“Ah… well, X is the gas and Square is the brake. Right trigger is reverse and Circle is used to throw out banana peels and stuff to trip up the other racers.”

“Okay, I think I got it!” Kazuki exclaimed.

He did not get it. Kazuki was terrible at the game and came in dead last every single time. But whenever Rei would look over at Kazuki in the middle of a race, he saw how focused Kazuki was. He had this determined look in his eye that made him look incredibly serious, but it was offset by the fact that he also had his tongue sticking out. Rei thought, “Is that his concentration face?” and laughed to himself. That’s the moment he felt that strange tingling feeling again.

Then, it happened again this morning. Only this time, the feeling was much more intense. Rei was walking around the house gathering clothes for a load of laundry, and figured he should probably stop by Kazuki’s room to see if he had anything to add. The door was open, so Rei walked right in without even thinking. “Kazuki. I’m doing some laundry, got anything-,” Rei stopped mid-sentence, surprised to have found Kazuki wearing nothing but his boxers.

“Oh, hey! Perfect timing! On my way back from the daycare, some bus drove right through a puddle in the street, and it splattered all over my clothes! Ugh, they’re filthy now! Mind if I toss these in?” Kazuki placed the wad of dirty clothes in the basket that Rei was holding, doing so with a big smile on his face. Rei couldn’t stop himself from looking Kazuki up and down. He’d seen him shirtless countless times before but couldn’t recall a time when he’d seen him in his underwear. It was… interesting, to say the least. Rei then realized that he was feeling that strange tingling warmth again, and quickly turned around to walk away before Kazuki could see the redness in his face.

So as Rei lie there in his bed, thinking back on all the times he’d felt this feeling before, he realized there was a common trigger. It was Kazuki. No matter what was happening in those situations, Kazuki was always involved. And now, as he replayed each of those events in his mind over and over again, the feeling just kept getting stronger and stronger. His entire body felt like it was on fire, and his heart was about to beat out of his chest. “What the heck is this?!”

Having the type of upbringing that Rei had, he was unfortunately not very experienced in this department, so it took him longer than the average person to realize what was going on. But the moment he tried to shift his weight and roll over to his side, he felt a stiffness in between his legs and the subsequent pain from being pressed against the mattress. And it dawned on him. “…Oh.”

Rei honestly didn’t feel very surprised. He’d been living with Kazuki for years now, and already sort of knew that the feelings he had toward him were a bit complicated. He’d always felt close to him but was too embarrassed to really show it. But after Miri came along, the feelings he had for Kazuki only grew stronger. He considered Kazuki his partner and his family. He liked seeing him smile. He liked spending time with him. He liked how he started to show physical affection like hugs and the occasional kiss. He liked it all. So it was only a matter of time before Rei would crave even more from Kazuki. “I’m such an idiot for not realizing it sooner…”

Now Rei was definitely not falling asleep. Instead of lying there and continuing to let his thoughts run wild with Kazuki, he decided to get up and head to the kitchen for a glass of water. He paced back and forth in the kitchen for a few minutes, hoping to tire himself out a bit. But he unexpectedly found himself staring at Kazuki’s bedroom door. And his mind was flooded by various thoughts of what might happen if he were to go in there. “Maybe… we can just cuddle,” he whispered to himself. “Yeah, that might help me fall asleep.” But even his own words didn’t sound very convincing.

Standing outside of Kazuki’s bedroom door, Rei took a deep breath before gently knocking. Aware that Kazuki was probably asleep and didn’t hear the knock, he took the liberty of opening the door and walking into the room, carefully closing the door behind him. He tiptoed over to the bed and cast his gaze down on the sleeping Kazuki. “Pfft! His mouth is wide open.”

Rei stood there for a few minutes longer just admiring the sight before him – Kazuki was lying on his back, with one arm raised above his head and the other draped across his stomach. His mouth hung open as he quietly snored. The longer Rei stared, the more he could feel the blood rushing to his cheeks. Finally, he called out in a whisper, “Psst. Hey, Kazuki? Kazukiii. Wake up.”

Kazuki jerked his head, turning toward the quiet voice calling out to him. “Mmm-hm? Rei? What is it, what’s wrong?” He still had his eyes closed but sat up slightly as he spoke.

“I, uh… I can’t sleep.” That was an understatement…

“Hm, you wanna crawl in? C’mere.” Kazuki still had his eyes half shut, but scooted over and lifted the blankets, allowing plenty of room for Rei to climb into bed next to him.

Rei’s eyes widened in surprise; he wasn’t expecting this to be so easy! He carefully sat down on the bed, but before he could fully lie down, Kazuki wrapped his arm around Rei’s waist and pulled him close. Rei’s face was now nearly pressed against Kazuki’s chest.

“Wan’ me to rub your back?” Kazuki’s voice was low and groggy, and Rei could feel his hot breath on the top of his ear. This did not help Rei’s… current predicament.

“…Sure.”

Kazuki’s hand slowly wandered down to Rei’s lower back and he gently tugged at Rei’s shirt. “Here. Lift it up a bit.”

Rei did as he was told and pulled the bottom hem of the shirt up a few inches. His stomach and lower back were now exposed to the drafty air around them.

Kazuki’s fingertips began to lightly trace swirling patterns on Rei’s skin. He went up along Rei’s spine and gently rubbed around his shoulder blades before sliding back down to his lower back. “Hey, Rei,” Kazuki said in a hushed voice. “You’re really warm.”

Rei wondered if he could also hear how loud his heart was beating in the moment. “Sorry. Is it too hot?”

“No. I’m comfy.” Kazuki continued to delicately glide his fingertips across Rei’s back and side, every so often grazing his fingernails along Rei’s flesh. He then inched toward Rei’s stomach.

“Ah, Kazuki… that tickles.” Rei was starting to get goosebumps. Although it did tickle, it also felt insanely good. He didn’t want Kazuki to stop.

“Hmm oh yeah? How about here?” Kazuki’s fingertips were now tracing along Rei’s hip near the waistband of his pants.

Rei shuddered and pressed his face further into Kazuki’s chest to stifle the slight moan he made. He now had a hard time believing that Kazuki was still half asleep; he had to be doing this on purpose.

Kazuki definitely took notice of Rei’s reaction… and he was instantly on full alert. He continued to graze Rei’s lower stomach with his fingers as he leaned his head down and whispered into his ear, “Rei. Can I kiss you?”

Instead of using words to answer the question, Rei tilted his head up, reached his hand up to clasp the back of Kazuki’s neck, and pulled him close so that their lips pressed together. Kazuki let out a deep Hmmph, which made Rei even more desperate.

Kazuki placed his hand on the small of Rei’s lower back and abruptly pulled him closer. By doing so, he could feel something solid pressing into his thigh and let out a quiet chuckle. Pulling out of the kiss, he said in a teasing voice, “Rei~, is this why you came in here?” As he said the words, he shifted his leg upward, nudging the hard bulge in Rei’s pants.

Rei jolted, letting a gasp escape from his lips. He looked up to see a sly grin on Kazuki’s face, which only added fuel to the fire that raged inside him. “So what if I did?” Rei then used one hand to pull Kazuki’s face back to his for another deep kiss, and used his other arm to prop himself up. He leaned into Kazuki, leading him to lie on his back as he swung one of his own legs over Kazuki’s waist, landing himself in a straddling position on top of Kazuki. He pulled away from the kiss but remained hovering only an inch or two from his face. “Is that a problem?” he asked, while staring deep into Kazuki’s eyes.

“Holy shit,” Kazuki thought to himself, as he stared back at the man sitting on top of him. Although it was dark in the bedroom, Kazuki could tell that Rei’s face was flushed red. He also felt the incredible warmth in his groin right where Rei was sitting, and knew that Rei would soon be able to feel just how excited he actually was about this turn of events. “I’m not complaining. I just hope you’re prepared,” Kazuki taunted.

“For what, exactly?”

“For the consequences of your actions. Rei, did you really expect me to hold myself back after you’ve climbed on top of me like this?” Kazuki reached for Rei’s upper thighs and gripped tightly, holding Rei in place as he thrusted his own lower half upward, pressing into Rei even more. Rei immediately reacted by dropping his head slightly and letting out a hushed moan, making Kazuki grin even wider.

Rei re-focused his gaze on Kazuki and hesitated for only a moment before finally giving his reply. “Like I’d expect anything less from you. So, come on, Kazuki.” Rei then leaned down, pressed his lips against Kazuki’s ear, and whispered, “Show me the consequences of my actions.”

Kind of also want to do a Kazuki sickfic because the idea of Rei running around, having absolutely zero skills to nursing someone back to health, let alone an adult (possibly his 👀👀👀 boyfriend) as it can be different that a child, and no idea on what to do because caring for sick Miri took 10 years off his life and now Kazuki!!!! Seems absolutely hilarious to me. And then Miri being sweet adorable little Miri trying to help take care of Papa-Kazu in her own way.

Kazuki also kind of seems like he would self isolate as well and convince everyone he’s fine because he doesn’t want them to worry or fret over him…. Possibly having someone care for him reminds him too much of his ex-wife and that hurts… brings up painful memories. Damn then you could have his fever spike too and he starts crying and getting REALLY emotional because he’s so out of it and Rei is just like omfg wtf do I do!?!?!?!

Rei actually getting emotional at one point when Kazuki passes out from fever and Rei breaks, asking Kazuki repeatedly, what should I do? Tell me what to do! Maybe Rei dragging Kazuki to the bathroom and throwing him in the tub (all a little rougher than he wanted but damn it- he’s freaked), soaking rags in the cool water to try and bring down Kazuki’s temperature. Miri helps and eventually Kazuki opens his eyes slowly, his voice hoarse, “R-Rei?” Rei almost throws himself at Kazuki when he heard his name, pulling him in a tight hug that alarms the other man (because Rei with emotions!?!?!) but he softens after a few and pats Rei’s shoulder weakly- Miri jumps up because she wants to be apart of the hug too!!!! Yeah idk lol 😂

Could you imagine, especially if the theory surrounding him collecting intel on Kazuki or working for the Boss and basically Kazuki is his target turns out to be right- because Rei would be like, I’m supposed to be collecting intel on this idiot! Not cradling him in my arms! Wtf!?!?!?! (Lol is this a Lance/Keith situation?)

Lol- the Boss sent me to collect intel on this guy/ put a hit on him and now we’re married with a kid… imagine the Boss just hearing this from one of his henchman during a debriefing of the KazuRei operation and shaking his head like wtf is my son doing!?!?!?!
