Toothless: comparison and art study
Tumblr media
There is something to be said for the Toothless's of the non-book HTTYD with each being different from each other. The Animated Toothless is iconic in it's design, a cat-like predator which takes only one look for the viewer to know that he is fast. The Live Action Toothless is still cat-like, and yet... too human-ish, like the eyes of HTTYD2 Hookfang. It is the unholy offspring of HTTYD3 Toothless and baby Godzilla. The Live Arena is spikier and bulkier, with a more reptilian and classical dragon appearance and yet is recognisable all the same.
Action Toothless is most bland in colours, with an incredibly unrealistic nearly pure black hue and lack of patterns. The Animated version fares better, with a faint blue hue (which is lacking in these images but real all the same) and patterns across his back and wings. Finally, the Arena Toothless. He has pink around his maw and toes, and though lacking in patterns continues the blue hue.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, both Arena and Action Toothless lack the exaggerated scales on their ear plates, instead having a more striped texture like a horn of some sort.
Neck wise, Action Toothless is the outlier, an 'S' curve to it whereas the other two- while still having a mammalian posture- are far more reptilian in their slant. For all three, they have exaggerated scales around the spines that begin only around the shoulder area.
For faces, Animated Toothless is certainly the most complex, a flat shape that slips into a slope at the bridge of the nose and a (mind you, flexible) beak shape at the end of the nostril. His spines begin at the "front" of his eye corners and ends at the end of them (please note the third eyebrow is also error, to which I apologize greatly). Arena Toothless has a rounded flat shape, bulging out at the bridge of the nose, and having a far more exaggerated shape and yet removing the beak element to it. He has the primary row of head spikes, starting from the start of the bridge of his nose and ending at his ear-plates. His secondary row of spines, hardest to see, starts at the front of his eyes and ends at the end of his slight head indent. The third row of spines start at the beginning slant of his brows and ends at his primary ear-plates. Action Toothless also loses the slight beak, instead having the shape but with lips. He has the least flat head and the most visible brows. His spikes begin between his eyes and ends at his first ear-plates. Action Toothless is the only of the free to have more than 4 protrusions to each side of his head.
Tumblr media
There is little to be said on head shape: Animated is somewhere between a U and a V depending on expression, vaguely snake-like; Action is a lot blunter and thicker, with more defined cheekbones and having a narrower top. The Arena is merely speculative, but likely is a oval of some kind with the same general shape.
It's fairly obvious that Action Toothless is attempting to appear less dangerous and much cuter. Such a head shape is poor for his aerodynamics, as his original head shape gave him the arrow/jet-like physics, but this lesser head shape will result only in creating more drag for the dragon who's main (if only) hunting tactic is to dive at speeds to break the sound barrier.
Tumblr media
Posture has previously been discussed for necks, but in terms of body shape they all follow the trend of a larger chest and thinner lower body (Do not ask what happened to Animated's tail. Please.) Arena has the thickest and shortest tail, held in a dinosaur position. His wings are small, curved with fin-like secondary wings. Action Toothless has a more sloped back, and a tail consistently held low to the ground. His wings are smallest, secondary wings mimicking that of the third movie with how they are nearly folded. Animated Toothless (only from the first movie as GOTNF does use a separate model) has the longest, thinnest tail that is usually either in contact from the ground or held up. His wings and secondary wings overlap each other slightly, with the thickest connecting skin to the body.
Tumblr media
Looking closer at the wings of the Toothlessi, it's perhaps equally surprising as not that the Animated's are the most realistic*. All the wings have connecting tissue between wing arms, creating a near flat point until fingers begin to diverge. Arena Toothless has a bulky shoulder joint, and two claws that disrupt the general shape. He has 4 wing fingers, at least 2 of which seems to be fairly straight, and a wavy texture to his webbing. Action Toothless has an oddly thin forearm, 5 wing fingers (which is most realistic as they are fingers- something that Hookfang's design tried to mimic but failed) with the primary being far, far shorter than the secondary, making his wings also appear significantly smaller than they truly are. Said wing fingers are also thick, though not pictured here. The Animated Toothless has 6 fingers, the primary being longest and surprisingly thick arms!
*Fun Fact: The Live Arena Plush has his wings and is actually capable of gliding! It is quite enjoyable.
Tumblr media
All Toothless designs contain heavy scale coverage of both front and back legs, and spikes to the front. Interestingly, the Animated Toothless is the only one to be plantigrade rather than digitigrade, as well as appearing to have a slight webbing to his joint though this is equally as likely to be a meshing error. Both Action and Arena go for sharp claws atop paws rather than the flexible and dulled claw of the animated toothless, and thick plating to his rear legs. Both Arena and Animated appear to be stockier than the Live Action, which has lankier, thinner legs.
There is little else to be said between designs. For Hookfang, I brought my own most pressing issue, but Toothless? There is nothing to be said for his head has already been examined.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only real difference between Animated and Arena Hiccup is their shirt, otherwise a ditto. Action Hiccup differs in that he wears two shirts (see multiple sleeves), lacks a boob window and has a hood. Oh wait, no, the fur of his boots is also a different colour. With such a variation to the designs, it would simply take too long to compare everything and so I shall end on this:
Arena Toothless leans into being a powerful dragon, Animated Toothless leans into being elegant and the Action Toothless was bred into domestication over the time of Vikings to now.
There is such a lack of difference between the Hiccups there is nothing to be said- which seemingly most of the other teens do not follow in.

one time i was at a folk museum and got talking with an older lady folk artist (like late 60s/70s) who was doing bead weaving, and she told me that she's been working here for a while, but only started bead weaving recently, because they asked her "hey, do you know bead weaving? if yes, can you demonstrate it for the visitors?" and she was just like "yeah, of course i know how! no problem :)" and then went home and typed "bead weaving tutorial for beginners" into youtube.
i left that conversation with a lot of bead weaving tips, but the real lesson i learned was "lie to your employers, the skill can't be THAT hard to master." ❤️

Galois, a Super Local Currency
At the supermarket cash register.
When the cashier says, "Yes, that's 1,524 yen," how would you pay? In most cases, you would either hand over two 1,000 yen bills, or two 1,000 yen bills and a 24 yen bill. I definitely prefer two 1,000 yen bills. That way, you get 476 yen back in coins. Two 1,000 yen bills and a 24 yen bill gives you 500 yen back.
Obviously, right?
However, these two choices are very different. I once tried to calculate the cost of coins. As a result, small denomination coins are more expensive in terms of cost. A 500 yen coin costs 5.5 yen, and a 10 yen coin costs 3.6 yen. So, 50 10 yen coins are far more expensive than one 500 yen coin! ! You can see that the cost is much higher. When it comes to paper money, the cost is practically free. When a country's economy collapses, currency becomes "meaningless." But if you only consider the value of the currency as a commodity, small coins are the best, so…
In other words, I'm "saving small coins!!" Well, I'm sure there aren't any housewives who think like this.
Have you heard of the term "local currency" or "local currency"? In fact, I'm also planning to create one. A "local currency" mediated by coins. His name is "Galois." Galois is a French mathematician who is called a miracle man in the history of mathematics. He constructed a remarkable theory called "group theory," but was killed in a duel over a woman at the age of 20. He is a super genius who is called a miracle man in the history of mathematics. Although he left behind great achievements, he doesn't even have a unit of measurement, so I will make it a unit of measurement.
Prelude to the Galois Idea
"Ende's Testament" (Kawamura Atsunori + Group Gendai, NHK Publishing) is one of the most outstanding books published in recent years. I recommend reading this book first. The outline of "local currency = locally circulated currency" is clear. Ende is a famous fairy tale writer, Michael Ende, who is famous for "Momo" and "The Neverending Story." It is not widely known that he was thinking about currency in his later years. Hence the title of the book.
In this book, the economist Silvio Gesell is particularly noteworthy. He thought, "The value of everything decreases over time, but only money increases (interest is earned). This is strange!" and came up with the idea of "currency that decreases in value over time." This unusual idea was actually tried out by local governments in Germany and Austria, and was a great success. Since the value of money decreases if it is not used, people flocked to use the currency, and the Great Depression was overcome. However, the attempt was forced to be canceled due to interference from the central bank. This was the first example of "local currency = locally circulated currency." Currently, various attempts are being made around the world, including in Japan. The currency in this case will be a custom-made "imitation banknote" or computerized points. Some form of "central administrator" will be placed.
PS: The famous economist Keynes is said to have predicted that "Gesell will have a greater influence on future generations than Marx." (From "The Testament of Ende")
The idea of "Galois"
In the spring of 2003, my father developed Alzheimer's disease (a type of dementia). The Morishita family consists of three men: my father, me, and my younger brother. As two single sons, we had to take care of my father. At the time, I was unemployed, and my brother was a company employee. My brother submitted his resignation to the company, but was treated as a leave of absence.
So, the only income in "yen" was my father's pension. Compared to my brother who had sufficient financial means, I did not have that. Moreover, I could not go to work because I was caring for my father. It was a difficult situation because we were two men and had to look after my father all the time.
So what should I do about my income? -- was a difficult problem to overcome. I could somehow provide the goods I needed for daily life. But I had no free money!
So I decided that the only way to pay for the "actions" I did to care for my father was to convert them into points and receive the money from his pension. In other words, it seemed natural that my father should be paid for his "actions" as he worked as a staff member at a care facility. He was a private care worker.
However, I thought that his actions needed some other currency, not the yen that is the price of goods. Then I remembered the existence of "community currency" and decided to try it myself. This is how the idea for "Galois" came about.
The Way of Galois
Please read this while thinking about what I have written so far.
@It is based on the trust between several members.
@1 yen = 1 Galois @The basis is one-to-one transactions. @Use existing coins as a medium (means) for exchanging "actions". Then, reinterpret the meaning of the coin. For example, even if the economy is in turmoil and one radish costs 10,000 yen, you can still pay 100 Galois for the act of giving a radish. This is to avoid inflation and deflation.
@There is no interest.
@There is no central administrator. @Anyone can do it. @Model is a community before the commercialization of society.
@You can take advantage of the best of the yen's functions. For Galois settlement between remote parties, you can use the existing yen system, then convert it to Galois (coin).
@A community that can be completed with a minimum of 15 members can be created. It is desirable for people with various abilities and professions to gather. The reason for this is that the combination of 2 people taken from 15 people is 15C2=105 (I used the combination symbols taught in high school mathematics). More than 100 different transactions can be made.
@Reason for naming it "Galois": Since economics is a discipline centered around the concept of "exchange," it can be explained using the basics of Galois group theory (such as the idea of "commutativity").
Finally, Galois is a currency that has nothing to do with profit, and I am disclosing my ideas, not recruiting members.
Actually, there is an Arab proverb that says, "Penny coins save the day." Galois is the act of converting an action into a substance called a coin. This is based on Einstein's theorem of relativity, "energy = mass."
And with this blog, I am demanding a Nobel Prize in Economics. I think it's only natural that I should be presented with this thug prize. Hey, The University of Chicago (a second-rate university) controls the Nobel Prize in Economics.

A mutual acquaintance wants to try getting one of those fancy pens, got any suggestions for newcomers?
Absolutely!
Despite me always pining for the super pricy fancy pens, some of the best pens you can own imo are less than $20 USD off the bat, and while the "nicer" ones out there are. over that price, you don't really need that to get a really good first experience. I'll offer some super easy pens, some more intermediate pens, and some inks! This is going to be a long ride, so buckle up!
If you don't know where to start and are intimidated by bottled ink and instead want a pen that can write right away, I recommend the Pilot Varsity! You can get them at Michaels here in the US, and theyre slowly becoming more popular in retail shops like Walmart.
Tumblr media
Classic steel nib, not much flex because it's steel, but it writes pretty sturdily. I really like that it comes in different colors. They're disposable, so if you don't like them then you dont gotta keep 'em, and if you bust the nib by accident (we all have at least once), you aren't going to have to sell a kidney to replace it like you might need to with pricier pens.
If you want a pen you can put ink cartridges into, or just want a good workhorse of a pen, i HIGHLY recommend the Platinum Preppy. The one I own was $14 USD and came with a cartridge of water soluble black ink. For $4 USD, I got 4 cartridges of Platinum's Carbon Black ink, which is waterproof and smooth! Very versatile!
Tumblr media
I REALLY like this one. Ive never had the ink dry out even when i had tucked away for like a month, and if you ever want to use it with bottled ink, you can get a Platinum converter and use whatever fountain pen safe ink you dream of :] This pen only comes in F as far as I know (which is a western EF), but the chinese market has a version called the Platinum Meteor that comes in EF and has a cute shooting star on the nib :] Back when I started writing this I had lost mine for like a month but just found it and it wrote just fine the second i opened it up. The only thing I DISLIKE is that the converter cartridges are sold separately and you HAVE to buy platinum brand for this pen. I already have two bc of my other platinum pens, but. Yanno. Its still annoying to HAVE to do that.
Tumblr media
Similarly, the Kaküno is fantastic! all the above statements, but it has the added benefit of having a cute face on the nib as well as some cute collabs sometimes :] They're also about $14-$16 USD. They take Pilot cartridges in various colors, which are $3-$4 USD and Pilot converters.
I highly recommend the platinum preppy for the full fountain pen experience! It's not mega-expensive as pens go, so if you dont like it you havent sunk hundreds of dollars into a tool.
Lamy is having quality control issues that no one seems to want to contest because of their popularity, and the recent "no bro its totally the same color as the old popular one trust me" ink fiasco. TWSBI is another brand thats normally recommended and while theyre good pens, theyre shitheads as a company and like to use their muscle to bully both retailers and also smaller pen companies. I dont recommend either brand right now.
NOW, ONTO INK AND PAPER:
Your nib, paper, and ink are pretty important. fountain pens dont like rough paper, but they handle it better the larger they are (M, B). Dry inks will not always play nice in fine pens (Ef, F), and an EF pen will eat the shit out of rough paper and can get clogged. If you can get your hands on Rhodia paper to practice, good! If not most sketchbooks will tolerate F pens in my experience. Stillman and Birn are my workhorse sketchbooks and the pens work fine in all of their paper styles, but Hobby Lobby's sketchbooks also handle it well, as do BLICK's colorful leather sketchbooks. Don't Buy Moleskine. If you want to get really good ink effects (ie, you bought an ink with glitter or it has some cool effect like sheening or shading), tomoe river paper is hailed as the gold standard, but you can get similar effects on Rhodia or Clairfontaine paper, which afaik is easier to get ahold of overseas (cant speak for other countries on the US continent, but I will say I saw more clairfontaine in france than here on the us).
NOW FOR INK. my favorite part :] :
For both Waterproof and Black ink, i recommend Platinum's Carbon Black. I think it's pigment-based, unlike most dye-based inks, so it can be tough to clean out of your pen if it dries, but its noting a lil soap and water cant fix :3 It's benefit is that it comes in cartridges usable with platinum pens, so you dont need a whole bottle if you dont want one.
For color inks, I really like Pilot's Iroshizuku line. It is a WET ink and is not waterproof, but they come in cool bottles and pretty colors. I own Ajisai, Shinkai, and samples of Momiji, Murasaki Shikibu, Chikurin, Kosumosu, and Asagao. I use them both to sketch AND to color things and write. My workhorse non-waterproof color, the one i draw most in, is the Sailor Studio 343, but the sailor manyo line is also great! If you like and/or miss scented inks, De Atramentis has a line of them!
Be careful with inks that have glitter. I own the J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor and its glorious but if you leave it in your pen...thousands soaks hell attack. That being said if it would entice you, treat yourself to a fun and shiny ink! I have Colorverse Scorpii Glistening and its really pretty! Diamine has an excellent range that are easier on your pen but I dont have experience with them ngl.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD YOU BUY ANYTHING FROM NOODLERS. aside from having a shithead of a company leader, their inks are actually pretty volatile and can blow up both vintage and modern pens and im speaking from experience even though I used to use their eel bulletproof black and a waterproof blue one. I ended up using the blue ink to dye a cu chulainn wig darker for a wip alter cu cosplay. the last ink i bought, Tchaikovsky, also had a strange and suspicious stank about it.
Buying inks in bottles can be super expensive, but Goulet Pens sells 2ml samples that you can buy a shitload of and try them all out! I try to get new samples on the rare occasion when i need a new bottle of my favorites :> I'll probably buy a full bottle of Sailor Nekoyanagi, Pilot Iroshizuku Chikurin, or Diamine Writer's Blood next.
Tumblr media
I hope this helps! I had to edit it a few times over the course of the past few weeks bc i went on an entire tangent about bootleg pens I like and uh. realized thats both overly complicated for the base question/bootleg pens tend to need tweaking to work nice. that being said, i'll say it quickly: buying lil nibs from aliexpress has actually worked pretty well for me n my tswbi knockoff (lanbitou 3059) has a fude nib i got that's bent to allow brushlike strokes! but I donmt recommend it for a first pen bc it required some grease and a nib tweak upon purchase and dries p easily bc of the cap.

Paper Mario Badges Part 1
I spent a long time converting the Badges from Paper Mario 64 & Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door into items for D&D, and I thought I'd share. Since there's not really a Badge point system in D&D (unless you want to make that a homebrew thing? 3 Badge points per level with a cap of 30 points to spend. . .it could work. . .), and I didn't want them to take up attunement slots, there can only be 3 badges equipped at a time. DM discretion is obviously at play here, go nuts.
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Bump Attack Badge - Badge, rare
While equipped, if you land the first nonmagical melee or ranged attack on an enemy that has otherwise not been damaged, the hit is considered critical. If the attack roll is a natural 20 and meets or exceeds the target's AC, you can roll one extra damage dice in addition to the critical hit. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Charge Badge - Badge, very rare
While equipped, you can use an action to charge up power in your body. When you hit a target with your next melee attack, you can treat the hit like a critical success. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Charge Strike Badge - Badge, rare
While equipped, you have 3 charges, which replenish on a long rest. As an action, you can spend a charge to build up power for your next strike. You have advantage on the next unarmed melee attack made before the end of your next turn, and on a hit you add +2 to the damage roll.
Chill Out Badge - Badge, rare
While equipped, you cannot be surprised. Additionally, you do not provoke opportunity attacks when moving. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Close Call Badge - Badge, uncommon
While equipped, if you are targeted with an attack and the attack hits or you fail your saving throw for a damaging effect, you have a 10% chance of the attack missing or succeeding on the saving throw. Roll a d20. On a roll of 19 or 20, the attack misses or you succeed on the saving throw. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Damage Dodge Badge - Badge, uncommon
While equipped, you have +1 to all saving throws. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Deep Focus Badge - Badge, very rare
While equipped, you can use an action to pull arcane energy towards yourself, allowing you to regain a number of expended spell slots with a combined level of up to 5th. This ability recharges daily at dawn. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Defend Plus Badge - Badge, uncommon
While equipped, you have +1 to AC. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Dizzy Attack Badge - Badge, common
While equipped, you have 3 charges, which replenish on a long rest. When making an unarmed strike, on a hit you can spend a charge to force the target to make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the target becomes stunned until the beginning of your next turn. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Dizzy Stomp Badge - Badge, rare
While equipped, you have 3 charges. which replenish on a long rest. When making an unarmed strike, on a hit you can spend a charge to cast Confusion on the target with a DC of 15 or your spell save DC, whichever is higher. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Dodge Master Badge - Badge, uncommon
While equipped, you have advantage on Dexterity saving throws. Additionally, when you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you instead take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, and only half damage if you fail. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Double Dip Badge - Badge, rare
While equipped, you can take an extra action in combat. This ability recharges on a long rest. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Double Trouble Badge* - Badge, common
While equipped, you deal double the damage with weapon attacks. However, you also take double the damage when hit. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
*This is actually the Double Pain Badge, which purely makes you take double damage in Paper Mario: TTYD. Great for PM Danger Strats, useless for D&D, so I made it slightly more useful via double damage
Feeling Fine Badge - Badge, uncommon
When equipped, you are immune to the poisoning, paralyzed, and stunned conditions. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Fire Drive Badge - Badge, uncommon
While equipped, you have 3 charges, which replenish on a long rest. When you hit a target with a melee weapon attack using a hammer, you can spend a charge to blast a line of fire starting from the space the target occupies and extending in a straight line 15 feet behind it. The target and any creature in the line takes 2d8 fire damage. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Fire Shield Badge - Badge, uncommon
While equipped, you have resistance to fire damage and advantage on saving throws made to avoid effects that deal fire damage. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
First Strike Badge - Badge, uncommon
While equipped, you can choose to forgo rolling initiative to automatically go first in the initiative order. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Flower Drain Badge - Badge, uncommon
While equipped, you have a -1 penalty to damage rolls (to a minimum of 1 damage) made with weapon attacks, but on a hit you regain one used spell slot of 5th level or lower. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
Flower Finder Badge - Badge, uncommon
While equipped, when you defeat an enemy in combat, you have a 10% chance of regaining a spell slot of 3rd level or lower. Roll a d20. On a 19 or 20, you regain a spell slot of 3rd level or lower. You can only have three badges equipped at one time.
