one of the things i find really interesting about this Ned Fulmer/Try Guys drama is the fact that the Try Guys as a business works by creating parasocial relationships with the audience, primarily by letting the audience into various aspects of their personal lives (i.e., Eugene coming out, Ned & Ariel’s kids, Keith’s marriage, Zach’s battle with an autoimmune condition). And now, they (Ned and Ariel specifically) are asking for the impossible, which is for people to not be invested in their private issues.

just got me thinking, you can’t be a public figure and have a private life, if your identity as a public figure is publicizing your private life.

You know, hearing about all the hate that Noah Schapp is getting for supporting Israel in this conflict, I really can’t help but think of just how fucked up the people who form these parasocial relationships with them are, and I also feel like people don’t understand that a “parasocial relationship” doesn’t have to be a good one.

If you’re waiting on the edge of your seat waiting for your favorite celebrity to come out with an opinion on something just so you can blast them on social media when their opinion is different from yours, that’s a parasocial relationship. If you’re harassing a celebrity for being “silent” on a very hotly debated geopolitical topic that they have no obligation to even be aware of, let alone form an educated opinion about—that’s a parasocial relationship.

You demand they speak, damn them if they don’t, and crucify them if they don’t agree with you.

And what’s worse is when you do this to child actors. Like if it wasn’t already unreasonable enough for you to demand a political hot take from an adult celebrity, now you’re targeting a child, and god forbid they don’t agree with you because then they become persona non grata before their career really even existed.

Like stop asking celebrities who have zero business giving an opinion on politics to give their opinion. It’s fucking stupid.

i didnt see this kind of push for every single creator/person to denounce a country during the beginning of the effective genocide of Ukranians.

CR has nothing to do with the conflict and frankly it’s OK not to have a strong public opinion! What happened to “I’m not well enough informed about X and so I’m going to stay out of a discussion?” I’d much rather they not engage than force them to make a statement because we believe we’re owed.

We don’t know them. And frankly, humans aren’t equipped to handle dealing with every of Earth’s tragedies (or the online fallout for any possible stance they could take)
