#GoDeepATL was founded with the purpose of creating a safe and familiar space for dancing, imbibing, and some grown ass fun. 6 months in, it has not only fulfilled those roles, but revealed so much about myself and the community in which I function. While Atlanta is for sure a party city, it unfortunately still lacks a level of diversity within its nightlife offerings. There is what I'd describe as a comfortable level of segregation between crowds and tribes, not to mention the complete lack of appreciation shown by most venue owners for the safety and comfort of their patrons and promoters. I am proud to partner with a black owned establishment(@parlorden ), a visionary owner (@alphonzocross ) one of my childhood best friends (@thaddeusjeffries ) and a plethora of extremely talented DJs (shoutout all my alumni!) to provide an experience that can honestly be whatever you as a patron decides to make it. We welcome you regardless of your creed, background, or sociopolitical standing to a night of freedom. Djs, live music and cocktails Curations with @missadib Link in bio : Last year when I accepted the role of music director for parlor, I had no clue the world would really close. When it did I needed to activate myself, exercise organizing djs, while continuing to build relationships and scout talent. We ran scrimmage daily on twitch. Not understanding the platform, but knowing djs needed to stay active and people needed connection to GOOD anything, in this case music. Of course with the world “open”, some have found it unnecessary to continue to build, collaborate, and network on these platforms. Even though I struggle with a lot of things about twitch particularly, I have been streaming in some capacity for well over 12 years. I understand the idea of reaching people in different spaces and how it can aid in creating opportunities IRL. At the end of the day, I know what I want. I want a team of jedis, who understand why giving people an amazing experience, warrants amazing rewards. One that is filled with known, unknown and down right amazing music, food and drinks. All housed in a space that everyone has pride in being associated with. I want a team that sees the value in promoting each other, as well as the venue and it’s multi offerings. With the understanding that what you put in, you will surely get out. Just like my asking long ago to be able to employ djs as an extension of my legacy. I ask for people to not only understand their value but the value in further building a community, that exemplifies BETTER past, present and future #djbusiness, #hospitalitybusiness and #businees in general. Everyone wants to “do music”. Djing has become the easiest way to be associated with music and potentially SM popularity. Over the course of my experience as an INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR, I’ve learned a few things. Music is the last thing venue owners (normally) think about, that is unless the venue is musically themed. Performers (singers : musicians, djs, comedians, poets) are a risky investment. At this point we can be easily clumped as advertising. Anyone who has had interactions with owners may well know, they normally DON’T WANT (they could and should have budget) to pay for advertising. You not only have to be concerned with bringing ppl in, but making sure they BUY things. YES sales. You being cute, your musical selection and even your people (POSSIBLY COMING) doesn’t mean the venue will make money. Likes don’t mean people will show up and ultimately don’t mean coin funneled back out for your SERVICES. It’s why SOME of us have don many hats to make djing more valuable. I have heard some say promoting isn’t my job. Graphic design isn’t my job. Taking pics and streaming isn’t my job. Sound engineering isn’t my job. Selling drinks / food isn’t my job. I could go on. The one job (if you see it that way) you want to do may not happen, if you don’t at least consider what is NOW a requirement for brands. If you work for chains (Applebee’s), then there’s a bigger budget and draw anchored. If you work for smaller niche concepts, you have several things to consider, while you mindlessly don being a dj. There are far more moving parts than simply plugging in and playing. You are now partaking in #groupeconomics. Today’s brand lesson @abstonconsulting ... Your online presence can generate all kind of engagement. If it doesn’t lead to butts in seats, BUYING product (drinks and food) from the venue, it may mean less actual opps. Yes some of us may not care based on alternate streams of income (“real jobs”). For the driven, it doesn’t mean not to create content, ie podcasts, dj streams and such. It’s means being more innovative and involved in building in-house fan bases and collaborations. We to partner with other non dj brands. No different than table touches from resto staff, being friendly and accommodating is key. Making sure that people love your work, enough to come in asking / expecting you. This might be conflicting with my desire not to JUST play pop(ular) music. Djing can be like bartender and cooking. Where as mixology and being a chef is creating curations to provide an experience. This is could be the difference between simply playing songs and curating sounds.
