"Watching Life Passing Me By" c.2002 acrylic on canvas. The title is the meaning. In 2002 I was 27, and since I'd had to drop out of college a second time in 1998 due to psychosis I was living at home with my parents, and as they had jobs and I didn't, I was keenly aware my whole life might be like this: unable to live on my own, no money, alone all day, watching everyone else I knew get married, have kids, etc. But not me. I painted an angel stuck in a hellscape because my only sin was being sick, but I felt condemned with my illness. In truth, I spent another 10-15 years like this. It was depressing and demoralizing and I still felt like a child who had to be watched over even at my 40th birthday in 2014. It's taken a long time to get out of that hell but I've been somewhat free since 40. I'm married, I moved to Canada from the U.S. and I'm always careful with my meds, because they do work. There is hope. No two people with schizophrenia are the same, and others have been able to do more at younger ages than I have. Others do worse. But it isn't hopeless. This is a great topic Ive been meaning to post about for my clients so Im going to share & build upon it a bit from how we look at it with the #neurologicallens thru #zhealth Agreed 100% that biomechanically the treadmill is a different gait pattern! I am going to further that specific point which will help the get to #neuro view The foot gets PULLED backwards by the treadmill unlike the ground It also promotes bouncing more than moving forward & back. In other words you are not getting that same horizontal acceleration as on ground. Pay attention if your going up & down or forward next time if you cant visualize this. So to that neurological lens. Visually you get peripheral movement when you are running outside. Take a quick sprint note how things keep #passingmeby #pharcyde On the treadmill your peripheral vision stays in place. So to your brain proprioceptive-wise this feels like running outside but it cant be cause you are constantly in the same place as is everything around you. #confusion Inner aka Vestibular system (tells you which way is up and which way you are going...think balance) says you are bouncing up & down constantly versus moving forward like normal running on earth #moreconfusion We have a TON of neurons as part of our #nervoussystem constantly working to tell us where we are in space and where we are going and when they dont align it adds confusion we refer to that as #sensorymismatch Thus most individuals when reassessing after the treadmill test poorly Great way to burn calories & it is so useful to be able to track all those stats but you have to trade things like your gait pattern when walking performance & pain levels for the treadmill so think twice! I can show you how to #assessandreassess so you know how this confusion may be affecting you!!
