Tragically Hip releases stand-alone live album from Hollywood’s Roxy Theatre | National Entertainment
TORONTO – When the red recording light flashed on at Hollywood’s storied Roxy Theatre, the pressure was on the Tragically Hip to put on a good show, guitarist Paul Langlois recalls. It wasn’t long before those nerves receded into the background, said Langlois, as frontman Gord Downie punctuated the rollicking set list with ad libbed musings. The May 3, 1991 live performance will be released as a…

Van Gogh and Me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In his lifetime, Van Gogh managed to sell a single painting, having died in poverty. Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, one of the most important precursors of modern painting. The son of a Protestant pastor, he was born in 1853, in Groot-Zundert, and his career was permanently marked by great changes. Initially (1869-1876), Van Gogh worked in several branches of the Goupil Gallery, interrupting this activity to study Theology in Amsterdam. Soon, however, he abandoned his studies and decided to make a career as a secular preacher, which took him to Belgium, where he worked for two years, then changing his profession. In 1881, he attended the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts for a few months. Two years followed in Paris, during which he learned the basic techniques of watercolor and oil painting. Between 1886 and 1887, Van Gogh lived in Paris with his brother Theo, who supported him financially.
The decisive change in his life came in February 1888, when he moved to the south of France, where he lived and worked with Paul Gauguin. Many of his best-known paintings (Coffee at Night, The Bridge of Langlois, The Bridge of Arles and Cornfield with Cypresses) are the result of his work from that year. Self-Portrait with a Severed Ear (1889) indicates the latent tragedy that would later completely ruin his life.
Art and commerce dominated the jubilee year of the talented painter, who for much of his life struggled with enormous financial difficulties.
Van Gogh's works reach very high prices on the art market: An indian ink drawing by the Dutch painter was sold at auction for around 1,230,000. During his lifetime, however, this type of recognition was completely denied him. On July 27, 1890, he shot himself with a revolver; The resulting injuries were so severe that they caused his death two days later.

A goodbye
After almost 12 (!) years, it’s time for me to say goodbye to this blog. It will not be deleted though.
Here’s a (pretty rough and I’m sure not full) list of skaters featured here. They’re listed in alphabetical order by the first name (so “Ashley Wagner” is under “A” and not “W”). I know it’s not the correct way to do this thing but it was easier for me. Also, if you can’t find someone, try searching within the blog or just general Tumblr search.
Thank you for the company and bye!

A selection of recent work by Métis artist Jean Paul Langlois. Known for using ultra-saturated colours and pop culture motifs as a way of grappling with a sense of alienation from his own cultural backgrounds — both indigenous and settler — Langlois’s latest paintings mark a slight shift away from his previous focus on storytelling and family history.
As he shared with us:“I’ve been focused more on landscapes (I did a cross country plein air painting tour last fall). Interestingly enough, all kinds of stuff comes up when painting landscapes, there’s content and stories that I’m not even aware of until I’m done. In the words of Richard Mayhew, ‘Landscape has no space, no identity. It allows the painting to be about emotion.'”

Famous Five Art Nostalgia #LC10 – Part 2
Introductory post
Introduction to ‘Les Cinq’
Part 1
Les Cinq se mettent en quatre – The Famous Five and the Pink Pearls
Original publication date: 1975 (France), 1987 (UK)
Tumblr media
(Cover art by Paul Gillon, 1995)
~~~~~~
Plot summary:
(Disclaimer: All provided translations are my own.)
When George’s cousins arrive to Kirrin Cottage for the Christmas holidays, they’re delighted to learn that Uncle Quentin and Aunt Fanny are bringing the entire family to a city in Southern France where Quentin will attend a scientific congress. They’ve been lent an apartment belonging to some of Fanny’s distant cousins, who have gone on a ski holiday.
Tumblr media
(Arrival to Kirrin Cottage! Hugs and kisses! 🥰)
After exploring the city for a few days, the Five accompany Aunt Fanny to an auction held after an old lady, Germaine Langlois, died without heirs and without leaving a will. Fanny spots a small armchair that she likes, but another buyer is also interested. Fanny finally wins the bid because of an incident that prevents her competitor from bidding higher. She also buys a small writing desk from the same auction. Fanny’s rival later offers to buy the armchair back from her at a higher price, which she refuses.
Tumblr media
(Before the auction)
Both the armchair and the writing desk are delivered the next day, and the buyer comes back again, raising the Five's suspicions about how much the armchair is really worth.
While cleaning the armchair, the children find a box containing a necklace of pink pearls hidden in the folds inside the backrest. The writing desk also contains a secret drawer in which Dick discovers a handwritten will from twenty years ago, in which Mrs Langlois bequeathed the pearl necklace to her friend Elise Cassain. Aunt Fanny suggests they contact a solicitor to find Mrs Cassain, but the Five are keen to investigate.
Tumblr media
(Cleaning the armchair leads to a surprising discovery)
When their initial search for Mrs Cassain in the phone book turns up no results, they decide to go to the address of the late Mrs Langlois to see if a neighbour can give them some information.
Tumblr media
(Initial investigations using the phonebook)
They travel through the city via the recently opened subway, where pets are required to be carried inside a basket, leading George to get creative with Timmy’s transportation (see below).
Tumblr media
(Subway travels)
The children obtain Mrs Cassain's address, but when they get there they learn that she has recently died of a lung congestion contracted at Mrs Langlois's funeral. They get the address of Mrs Cassain's daughter, Denise Landreux, with whom she had a family feud.
Tumblr media
(The caretaker at the Landreux’s is not particularly welcoming)
But then the children learn that the Landreux couple died in a car accident, along with their son-in-law. However, their daughter Arlette Trébor is still alive, as is her six-year-old daughter Mona. The Five get their address, but the mother and daughter aren’t home when the children knock on the door.
That night, George is awakened by Timmy and sees a burglar rummaging in the armchair; she thinks she recognises Ernest Pradier, Fanny's competitor at the auction.
Tumblr media
(A thief in the night!)
Pradier owns a souvenir shop and George, rather unwisely, decides to go there with Timmy to find out for sure. Timmy does indeed recognise Pradier as the burglar, but Pradier also recognises them from the auction – he follows the children to Arlette’s, where they’ve decided to try their luck again.
Tumblr media
(The Five are being followed…)
Arlette is delighted with her unexpected inheritance and goes to the Kirrins' flat to retrieve the pearl necklace the next day. Concerned about being followed, Arlette agrees to let the Five escort her to the bank to deposit the pearls. On the subway platform, a man grabs Arlette's handbag and tries to push her onto the tracks as a train is coming; Julian catches up with the thief and recovers the handbag, but the thief manages to escape. The pearls are deposited safely at the bank.
Tumblr media
(Close call!)
But the next day, Arlette phones the Five to say that she has just received a threatening letter demanding the pearls or else Mona will be kidnapped. Arlette gives in to the blackmail despite the Five’s objections. The children follow her discreetly from the bank and see her throwing the necklace box onto the seat of a car that takes off without the Five being able to make out the number. They obviously suspect Pradier.
Tumblr media
(The Five just missed the car where Arlette deposited the pearls 😕)
The children set up surveillance of the shop for three days to find out about Pradier's habits.
Tumblr media
(Surveillance)
Later on, while Julian distracts Pradier pretexting to buy a souvenir, George sneaks into the shop and hides until closing time so that she can spy on Pradier. She not only confirms the presence of the necklace in the shop’s safe, but also discovers that Pradier is a pearl smuggler.
(George sneaks into the shop while Julian is distracting Pradier)
A few days later, they see Pradier exchanging a package with another man in the park.
(Shady dealings in the park)
The next day, new objects have appeared in the shop window: rather hideous boxes covered with shells, the cheap kind of things you can find in a tourist shop. The Five see several customers buying them, but when Anne, disguised in a black wig, tries to buy one, Pradier says they are not for sale.
Tumblr media
(Anne is sent on an undercover mission!)
The children buy a similar looking box in a flea market and George, disguised as a young redheaded Englishman, manages to swap it for one of Pradier's.
(George’s own undercover mission)
After examining the box closely, the children discover that smuggled pearls are hidden under the shells and, armed with this information, they go to inform the police, who arrest Pradier the next day.
Tumblr media
(The boxes’ secret is uncovered!)
Tumblr media
(A forceful arrest!)
Regarding Mrs Langlois's pearl necklace, it turns out that Pradier had found out about its existence entirely by chance, by leafing through old letters sent to his grandmother, who was a friend of Mrs Langlois.
